Liberland Is Either a Libertarian Paradise or It Doesn't Exist
On the Croatian Serbian border a libertarian utopia takes hold. Or not.

In a stretch of no man's land between Serbia and Croatia, a great libertarian experiment is taking hold. Or not.
On April 13, 2015, 31-year-old Czech politician Vít Jedli?ka announced the founding of The Free Republic of Liberland, a sovereign state with no taxes, no standing army, and all civil services provided on a voluntarist basis. It has a website, a flag, 4.3 square miles of land, a president (Jedli?ka), seven citizens, and hundreds of people signing up for citizenship. You can apply to become a Liberlandian yourself here.
But Jedli?ka, a regional party leader with the Czech Free Citizens Party, is still living in the Czech Republic. No journalists have been permitted to enter Liberland, which is on land controlled by Croatia, (though Croatia doesn't claim the territory as part of the country); the Croatian border patrol has been turning all press away.
"Jedli?ka has a history of outspoken anti-EU activism, so a lot of Europeans have assumed this is an unusually committed stunt," writes Russell Brandom at The Verge. Thousands have applied online for citizenship, but "it's not clear what that actually means." And "since the country aims for minimal government, it's hard to tell if it's not doing anything because it's so libertarian or because it simply doesn't exist."
Brandom notes that "America was once a made-up country, too," adding:
Maybe all countries are fake, and the only borders are the ones in our hearts.
Awww. But touching and possibly true as that may be, it doesn't much matter when your neighboring countries (you know, the ones with border guards and militaries) do believe in borders. Still I, for one, am wishing these crazy kids luck (and signing up online for citizenship, just in case).

In an interview with Czech publication Parliament List, Jedli?ka said the goal with Liberland is to find out "the minimum amount of taxes and regulation" needed to make society work. Jedli?ka was motivated by Jeremiah Heaton, a Virginia man who claimed a remote patch of land between Egypt and Sudan (and claimed by neither) in 2014 so his 7-year-old daughter Emily could be a princess.
Liberland's website describes it as a "constitutional republic with elements of direct democracy." Jedli?ka said Liberland will launch it's own kryptom?ny (crypto-currency) and hold its own elections within half a year. "Parliament will be strictly limited by the Constitution," he added, and politicians cannot "indebt the country" or introduce or raise taxes. Restrictions on citizenship for now are no Communists, Nazis, or people who refuse to respect the motto "live and let live."

Restrictions on citizenship for now are....
You know who else restricted citizenship.....
Laura Poitras?
The Senate and People of Rome?
Uh, that's spelled SPQR.
Fine... ""Senatus Populusque Romanus"
Happy, Quirite?
I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? Someone was good to me by sharing this link with me, so now i am hoping i could help someone else out there by sharing this link... Try it, you won't regret it!......

Obama?
So no one from D.C. then.
Not even Catoites? Would you deny Tom Palmer!??
Apparently not an open borders person.
What about nihilists?
Nah, ethos-less, Donny.
Liar! I hate you ENB! But god damn it I respect you.
! Link actually included now.

I'm a little worried about how the U.S. government would react to someone who just randomly claims dual citizenship.
Double tap tax?
You mean, you are not sure in which country they would drone strike you?
No fly list.
You can't claim dual citizenship. There is no such thing as far as the US government is concerned. You can however, be a citizen of more than one country. None of those countries will recognize your other citizenships.
Oddly, the US government (partially?) disagrees:
Dual citizenship is a way of getting your US citizenship while maintaining all the responsibilities and privileges of your current citizenship. In essence, dual citizenship allows you to be a citizen of two countries. Although the United States government allows dual citizenship, however, not all countries permit US dual citizenship.
http://www.us-immigration.com/.....-none-dual citizenship
I've been told by people who work in immigration that the US government does not recognize dual citizenship. So unless your renounce, I don't see any advantage of even telling the US that you are a citizen of another country. It won't change anything.
I think every one of those 5 points on that page are 100% BS. I wouldn't even bother telling them about another citizenship.
Ah.... I see. This is directed at immigrants.
Dual citizenship is a way of getting your US citizenship...
Well, it's BS. The US cannot take away or grant you citizenship in another country. In effect, dual citizenship does not exist.
From the horse's mouth.
Hyperion is basically correct, from what I understand.
a sovereign state with no taxes, no standing army, and all civil services provided on a voluntarist basis
Hopefully every single citizen is armed with military hardware or they'll be overrun in two seconds.
First they need actual people. Or maybe not. Maybe the first citizens will all be cows. That should make the marriage debate interesting.
Your first goal is to have an arsenal of nuclear tipped ballistic missiles, pointed straight at DC, Moscow, and Bejjing. Without which you will last no time at all.
Pretty much.
But that is also all you need in our MAD world.
There are approximately 200 countries without those.
If it is so bad the Croats won't even occupy it, I don't think you have to worry about being overrun. Sound more like "Moosylvania"...
Some country would overrun it for no reason other than to tax the people living there.
Only two could right now - Croatia and Serbia. Croatia sounds like they could care less, and the Serbs got shoved over the Donau, so...
I just never underestimate the greed of people who wield violence without consequence.
That is a very safe bet to make, true.
Don't tempt ze Germans. It's only a few hours from Berlin by tank.
Just like Lichtenstein and Singapore.
Singapore has a hell of a military, while Liechtenstein has geographical security. Liberland has neither.
Which stands in contrast to the "all micro-states will have weak puny militaries" theory.
What is Lichtenstein's geographic security? It's got some mountains? Something tells me the great imperialist powers of Switzerland or Austria could handle them just fine. Yet they don't.
Which stands in contrast to the "all micro-states will have weak puny militaries" theory.
OK.... I'm not sure where I made that argument except in reference to the article stating that Liberland would have no standing army.
What is Lichtenstein's geographic security? It's got some mountains?
Yeah. Believe it or not, that is actually a big deal. It's kinda difficult to occupy an area when you can't roll in any armor and have to ferry in everything by air.
Something tells me the great imperialist powers of Switzerland or Austria could handle them just fine.
Imperialist powers? Sure. Whatever.
You've that argument about every other time you and I debate the merits of microstates and stateless societies.
Believe it or not, a division or two of mountain troops with minimal air capabilities could easily take Lichtenstein, likely without any shots being fired. The terrain is not something that Lichtenstein stakes it's independence upon. Good relations, free(ish) trade and public perception are the guarantors of sovereignty for a country like Lichtenstein.
That one seems to have whoooshed surprisingly far above your head for a guy with 'sarcasm' in his name.
You've that argument about every other time you and I debate the merits of microstates and stateless societies.
No, I haven't, because I've never talked about "merit." You have talked of merit while consistently misunderstanding my argument that some sort of government is inevitable to mean I want or like a gang of armed men with the last word in violence using that power to steal under the guise of taxation. Saying that some sort of government is inevitable is not the same as saying it is good and wonderful. It is simply recognizing reality.
That one seems to have whoooshed surprisingly far above your head for a guy with 'sarcasm' in his name.
I've never thought of you as particularly sarcastic. My bad.
Air?
I took the bus.
Air?
I took the bus.
Actually, I only invaded Lichtenstein once.
They need to hold these type of trade shows there, but where anyone could come in with some cash crypto-currency and walk away with a few tanks, SAMs, etc.
The international exhibition of armament, military equipment and ammunition
People visit stands at Eurosatory, the largest international land and air-land defence and security exhibition in Europe
Costa Rica has no army and they haven't been overrun.
They have....by tourists!
Let's not forget Iceland. The trick is not to have anything anyone would want to steal.
Needs a different name. I always liked Free Haven. It also looks kind of flat and boring. Needs more mountains.
I have the name. But I shall not speak of it. Lest some of you usurpers be stealin it and trying to usurp my title of Supreme Overlord of ....
Name should be Robonia. A country I didn't make up.
The country slogan should be "Men really love it when you glob it on!".
OT: one of the more odd political stories this year. New Zealand PM apologizes for pulling hair:
http://tinyurl.com/mcdyxwu
In fairness, this is New Zealand and it's awfully hard to have sex with the prettier members of your sheep flock without pulling a little bit of hair.
Please, a little respect. It's already ANZAC Day in NZ (100th Anniversary, no less).
That's what cliffs are for. You corner them, and you get push-back. Win win.
I like my sheep waxed.
Brazilian-waxed, or turtle-shell-waxed?
Two, TWO Hat Tips I'm now owed... ahahahaha.
Get in line.
I heard that hat tips are guaranteed in Liberland in their Bill of Rights.
"America was once a made-up country"
K.I.S.S. and make up.
The Daily Show takes down anti-GMO activists!
Wow. Just wow.
I reject your attempt to make me sign up for Hulu.
You can watch for free. They throw up an ad. It's one of the best takedowns of any kind I've seen, highly recommended.
It's decent. If I were doing it, I would fly the anti-GMO people to the field of a 3rd world farmer that just lost his crops in a drought and ask them to explain why GMO drought-resistant crops would have been even worse. Or have them explain to a bunch of blind children suffering from vitamin A deficiency why golden rice is bad. They need to be exposed not just as idiots, but as idiots advocating for poverty, starvation, disease, and death.
So, a libertarian revolution?
#libertarianmoment

*starts loading weapons*
So there are no taxes, but he thinks a minimum of taxes are necessary, and Parliament can't introduce or raise taxes? Does that mean it's up to his discretion going forward?
It sounds like it is voluntary contribution.
Voluntary contributions.
Yeah, well...I'm gonna move there and build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the park!
Maybe all countries are fake, and the only borders are the ones in our hearts.
I know he was being a smartass, but this is true.
Well you sure have crossed the border into my heart.
80's soundtrack "awwwww".
That better be In Your Eyes.
Shock the Monkey
I laughed, HP, I laughed.
Uh, that's not metaphorical by the way. He actually perforated one of your ventricles. You should probably get to a hospital immediately.
"Oh, excuse me for being alive in the '90s and having two ears connected to a heart."
Governments don't live together, people live together. With governments you don't always get a fair word.
Damn you, Serious. You promised me these men would be decently treated.
They were. They were decently fed and then they were decently shot.
This is really cute. I would suggest that we all sign up and move there. But it would be a real shame when we were attacked by one of the neighboring governments and all of the Reason commentariat died at one time. The world would be left much worse off without us.
I'm not sure I want to meet all of you in person.
"Then you'd better straighten up and fly right."
/TPTB
We might reach critical libertarian mass resulting in an implosion of snark and bitterness.
We could all just create avatars and live in a virtual libertopia.
Second life was the most bizarre thing I ever put on a computer. Never again.
Something like this?
You wouldn't want to meet Tony, Tulpa, Dunphy and Amsoc in person??
I can't figure out how it can be that an area between two countries, especially two countries that aren't on excellent terms, can remain unclaimed by one (or both) of them. Normally land adjacent to countries is treated like candy adjacent to toddlers.
Maybe it's tainted with anthrax?
It is shite land. Nothing there except, maybe, UXO.
Don't countries often squabble over pointless bits of land?
They usually have resources near, or some sort of "strategic value".
Serbia might someday want to press for it back....symbolism and all that.

Or, the squirrelz could want it for their own nefarious reasons.
I can't figure out how it can be that an area between two countries, especially two countries that aren't on excellent terms, can remain unclaimed by one (or both) of them.
Maybe if one of them claims it, it will lead to a shooting war? Better to leave it as is than that. But it says that the Croatian border patrol is turning people away, so they at least have nominal control.
It's on their side of the river, so unless you float down from Hungary, the Croats are the only way in.
It's complicated, like everything in that area is. But not too complicated. I read an explanation a few days ago (I forgot where) which essentially goes like this:
The Serbian/Croatian border was designated to be the Danube River by, I believe, the Austrian Empire back in the day. The Western Powers after WWI and then Yugoslavia essentially reaffirmed that border.
The problem is that rivers have a way of shifting over time and the people designating this border (of course) did not take that into account. The Danube has shifted in multiple places along the border, generally in Serbia's favor (because God historically smiles on the Serbs, right?). Serbia, of course, wants the border to continue being the middle of the Danube; Croatia, of course, wants the it to be the historical line.
Liberland is a strip formerly on the Serbian side of the Danube that's now on the Croatian side. Croatia refuses to apply its sovereignty to the land and insists it is actually Serbian land because it is is concerned annexing the land will undermine its argument regarding the border. Serbia claims it is Croatian land to support its argument re: the border. So Liberland is claimed by neither but both insist it should be part of the other.
The KY border with Ohio, Indiana and Illinois is the north shore of the Ohio river in 1792.
So there are parts of KY north of the river and Indiana (et al) owns some parts of the river. Which is why riverboat casinos exist. Before Indiana allowed them to dock permanently, KY threatened to seize them if they drifted across the border by accident while cruising.
Thanks for the explanation, bassjoe. Makes sense.
Maybe all countries are fake, and the only borders are the ones in our hearts.
"Maybe"?
Then why would liberland not let in communists?
Border control IS thought control.
What's wrong with letting in communists anyway? Liberland should be fine letting in say a million african muslims or a million Marxists. It's the intentions that matter. liberland was intended as libertarian. Immigrants will respect that, which is why borders are fake and unethical.
At extreme ranges, most things turn inside-out. The boundary between a free society and 3rd world hellholes should not be porous, even if that is the NAP calculus you come up with. Basically you are doing the equivalent of applying Newtonian physics to a Relativistic problem.
Yes clearly the solution is to send armed thugs to imprison families, women and children for the heinous crime of seeking employment in a free market. As we all know, human rights are based on the geographic location of an individual's mother's vagina at the time of that individuals birth. To think otherwise is to invite a needlessly arbitrary and amoral standard.
Sounds awesome. It's been making the rounds in European news. Too bad it's so damn tiny.

"Jedli?ka has a history of outspoken anti-EU activism, so a lot of Europeans have assumed this is an unusually committed stunt," writes Russell Brandom at The Verge
I think his anti-EU stance bears some expanding upon:

"we have already had one [southern European] country approach us officially"
Greece wants to hide money there?!
Greece has money?
Loan money they have not blown yet, yes?
Actually, Greece is probably LOOKING for a loan, and since everyone knows libertarians are all monocle-wearing 1%ers...
Oooh, Liberland gets to practice usury!!!!!
"Servant, fetch me my traveling monocle and top hat, at once!"
Liberland will have a government of "10 to 20 members and a police force, but will not have an army, operating an open-border policy".
10 to 20 government officials and a police force governing... 4.3 sq. mi.? Fuck that.
Meh. If they're willing to keep it at that, I don't see a problem Remember, you can fit a lot of people onto 4.3 sq. mi.
" no Communists, Nazis, or people who refuse to respect the motto "live and let live."
Even liberland can't end redundancy.
No bureaucrats, CPS agents, politicians. Sounds nice.
It does sound like a hoax to me.
Nice flag, idiots. Who puts a tree above the sky?
Odin?
Score one for Xeones!
Dang, I just realized I have been very close to there - Kaposv?r, Hungary and the airfield at Tasz?r. IF I ONLY KNEW BACK THEN!!!
a sovereign state with no taxes, no standing army, and all civil services provided on a voluntarist basis
The draft constitution allows them to steal as much in taxes as 50.0%+1 of the citizenry votes for, so I'm thinking this could turn into California in short order.
If even one Californian is thinking of moving there, Liberland is already insolvent.
Well, I'd say one of the European nations is going to have to invade it. Otherwise they'll be able to buy the rest of Europe in 30 years (the people operating in voluntary cooperation, of course; their government wouldn't have the money).
I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I've been doing,

Hey, this could be the basis of the Liberland economy!
If my libertarian utopia can't be absurdist and possibly nonexistent, I don't want it!
And they won't have to worry about defending themselves should really mean guys want to take over and kill them because those other really tough guys who have enough foresight to arm themselves will take care of this little Eutopia.
Google pay 97$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12k for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

In fairness, sovereignty over those islands seems to also mean access to oil...
I don't think either side really cared before then.
