  • This guy again.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments today in King v. Burwell to determine whether the Affordable Care Act allowed for subsidies to exchanges run by the federal government or just the states. Justice John Roberts, who played a crucial role in upholding the challenge to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, said little to indicate which way he was leaning.

  • The Department of Justice has released a 100-page report documenting all sorts of abusive police behavior in Ferguson, Missouri. As expected, they have also determined that there was no evidence that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Brown did anything wrong when he shot and killed Michael Brown.
  • The trial for Dzokhar Tsarnaev for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing finally began today. His lead attorney acknowledged in her opening statement that Tsarnaev did indeed carry out the bombing with his brother, Tamerlan, but is angling for mercy by arguing that Dzokhar was under Tamerlan's influence.
  • The White House says Hillary Clinton's use of private e-mail to do all of her communication as secretary of state was in violation of "very specific guidance" on carrying out official business. She also thwarted records requests.
  • New York City will add two Muslim holidays to its public school calendars, giving more than a million kids Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha off to reflect on how awesome it is to not have to go to school.
  • Potential presidential candidate Ben Carson is getting some attention for saying that homosexuality must be a choice because some people go into prison straight, but come out gay. It totally happened on Oz.

I say we boycott Hit & Run until this comment doesn't look weird. WHO'S WITH ME?

    1. Somalian Road Corporation   10 years ago

Yeah, that'll probably work out as well as the "students going on strike to protest their own debts" hilarity that was on my Facebook earlier this week.

      1. Andrew S.   10 years ago

        Wait, what?

        1. Somalian Road Corporation   10 years ago

          Yes, precisely.

Basically, put yourself heavily in debt getting an economically worthless Marxist grievance studies degree and then cry about it online because your job prospects look dim... because you can produce nothing of value and your resume looks like a ticking HR complaint/lawsuit timebomb waiting to happen.

          1. RBS   10 years ago

Especially if your resume includes shutting down a philanthropy event.

          2. MJGreen   10 years ago

At what are they striking? Are they employed? If so, it's pretty stupid to strike against the 'low-paying' job because it doesn't pay enough to cover your mistakes. Starbucks didn't make you take out that loan.

And if they're not employed, then it's just Wednesday.

            1. Somalian Road Corporation   10 years ago

From their classes--that's why it's so hysterical.

To paraphrase, "what if they gave a strike and nobody noticed or cared?"

              1. MJGreen   10 years ago

                That... but...

I guess they have the right idea. At least they've taken the first step to solving their problem. Now they just need to stop writing a check to those classes.

                1. Root Boy   10 years ago

so its #strike kind of strike?

                2. JWatts   10 years ago

"I guess they have the right idea. At least they've taken the first step to solving their problem."

No, no, no. That's not resolving the root cause of the issue. It's merely attacking the symptom which will just lead to an unresolved cycle of attacking yet another symptom again and again in the future.

The root cause is they're fucking entitled & lazy.

              2. Mickey Rat   10 years ago

So it is like paying for a Starbucks latte and then rrfusing to drink it to protest it being overpriced. Just brilliant.

          3. LynchPin1477   10 years ago

It's not as bad as active students going on "strike" (i.e., not attending the classes they are paying for) to protest a miniscule tuition raise (I'm looking at you dirty Quebecois, Rufus).

      2. RBS   10 years ago

Those kids were totally forced to take on those debts!

Speaking of cop block...the anti-cop block.

        1. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

Here's a question. If the cops have no legal duty to 'serve and protect' why then do we make heroes of them and why are their salaries paid by taxpayers. If they pick and choose where they will serve and protect, why should we pay for it? Privatize them if this is how it is.

        2. Andrew S.   10 years ago

That's parody, right? IT'S PARODY, RIGHT?

Dammit, I was doing pretty well today, but now I'm angry again.

          1. Root Boy   10 years ago

Getting angry at dipshit cops is the new normal. It's surprising when you read an article anywhere about cops and they didn't shot the dog, flashbang the baby, kill the crazy guy or boot stomp the motorist.

      1. I like the White House throwing Hillary under the bus. It'd be even more delicious if Obama came out and said it.

      2. Still, it's funny that the White House is saying one of its employees was breaking the law for four years. "Hey... yeah! She was using a private email address! I guess we never noticed."

Blaming every violation of civil rights on institutional racism, even by offenders whose ethnicity is little different from the victim, is a perfectly reasonable accusation.

But suggesting that power differentials between civilians and authority inherently promulgate a lawless culture among the enforcers, one that exacerbates racial tensions and provides cover for malicious behavior? You're committing identity erasure or some such bullshit.

New York City will add two Muslim holidays to its public school calendars, giving more than a million kids Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha off to reflect on how awesome it is to not have to go to school.

Oh boy. Some morons are going to have a shit fit over this.

    1. John   10 years ago

Are the schools closed for Good Friday? If not, why not? They are closed for Easter, but that is a Sunday. They are closed for Christmas but actually mentioning the word is one of few things that might get a NYC teacher fired.

Christmas is a national holiday and not a specifically religious one anyway. These in contrast are strictly religious holidays. It is like if they closed school for Ash Wednesday. I can't see that happening.

      1. Irish   10 years ago

John, I got two weeks off for Christmas when I was in public school.

I think the Muslims can have two days. And your claim regarding Christmas being a 'national holiday' doesn't help your point. A Christian holiday is actually given far greater preference than these two Muslim holidays given that people get off work for it.

        1. John Titor   10 years ago

Unless we go back to calling it Saturnalia and bring back the Roman-style debauchery. I could go for that.

          1. Catatafish   10 years ago

            (nods aggressively at Titor's proposal)

        2. John   10 years ago

Yes it does help my point. Christmas isn't a religious holiday for most people. So getting it off is not a recognition of a religion. And the two weeks are not given in recognition of Christmas. it is called SEMESTER BREAK. If Christmas was in March, do you think you would get two weeks off for it? NO.

          1. goneGalt   10 years ago

Not sayng it's right or wrong... But here in deep blue CT the public schools have Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah , and Good Friday off.

If the Hindus and Buddists start kvetching, the kids will never have to attend class.

            1. goneGalt   10 years ago

I must be on "time delayed" Internet. Didn't see the other posts even with refresh.

          2. Dweebston   10 years ago

No, but we'd get the day off. Eve too, probably.

      2. HeteroPatriarch   10 years ago

My office is closed for Good Friday. Not that it's relevant to anything, I'm just stoked. Now if only I can talk them into Spring Break...

      3. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

I want them closed for Clean Monday!

    2. RBS   10 years ago

You mean the people who constantly complain about the separation of church and state?

      1. John   10 years ago

Unless you count Christmas, which is a national secular holiday in addition to being a religious one, name one other religious based holiday where they close the schools? A good number of private universities close for the Jewish High Holy days but the public schools don't. So why are we closing for the Muslim ones?

        1. Mad Scientist   10 years ago

For the sake of "inclusion" and "diversity" and "tolerance" and...

        2. Irish   10 years ago

          http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/04/.....-holidays/

Apparently in New York they also get off Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

"And Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha join other religious holidays already on New York's public school calendar. In addition to holidays like Easter that always fall on a weekend, students already have Christian holidays such as Good Friday and Christmas off, as well as the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur."

So in New York Christians actually do get Good Friday off. Seems like Muslim kids getting two holidays shouldn't be a big deal.

          1. John   10 years ago

Most school districts don't give Good Friday off. But if NYC does, than fair enough.

            1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

You get MLK Day off? Granted, NH was one of the last holdouts, but still, I get New Year's and that's it until spring break.

              1. Raven Nation   10 years ago

Yep, and the way our calendar works now it can be bad because it's the Monday of the second week of classes. So, if you decide to teach a Monday night class, you get them the first week and then two weeks later. I'm actually teaching a grad seminar this semester so it worked out well: I gave them twice the normal amount of reading.

                1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

Are you at a public institution or private? I'm at a private one, so that may be the difference.

                  1. Raven Nation   10 years ago

Public, so I assume it would be blasphemous to not take it. My first job was at a private school and, if you taught summer, July 4 was considered a class day.

          4. The Last American Hero   10 years ago

If a muslim kid takes off Good Friday or Rosh Hashanah is he considered a blasphemer?

        4. Rhywun   10 years ago

I got Jewish holidays off in public college 20 years ago. We got Good Friday off in public schools 25+ years ago. All of this in upstate NY.

Now in the real world, I might as well get all the Hindu holidays off because no one's around to do any work on those days...

          1. Trigger Warning   10 years ago

I'm down for any holiday that involves eating. The other ones, not so much.

        5. thom   10 years ago

Isn't spring break usually based around Easter? I've lived in pretty lefty places my whole life and they all seem to give good Friday through the day after Easter off as the spring break.

          1. Andrew S.   10 years ago

Depends on when Easter is. When Easter is in early April, it is for a lot of schools. When it's later, not so much.

(My kid's school has Good Friday as a holiday. The prior week is Spring Break.)

On the one hand you've got a brilliant former neurosurgeon who has an inspiring life story that puts the lie to the need for the welfare state and identity politics. On the other you have a pretty aggressive Bible-thumper that makes idiotic comments about TEH GAYZ and doesn't seem to do so well on the whole form-a-logic-based-and-cogent-argument thing (even when he's right).

        So there's that.

You know, people say this, but I've not heard anything come out the man's mouth that would lead me to believe he was brilliant. It's utterly shocking to me that he was a doctor, much less a surgeon, much less a brain surgeon. Everything I've ever heard him say was dumb in one way or another.

A FORMER Libyan army colonel living in exile in the United States has been adopted by the American intelligence services in the fight to overthrow the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gadaffi, Western diplomats in the capital Tripoli believe.

Speculation about the mysterious Colonel Khalifa Haftar coincides with an uprising in the city of Ajdabiya, on Libya's east coast, close to strategic oil installations. A spokesman for the Movement for Change, led by Haftar, claimed on a Saudi satellite television station recently that the group had been behind the insurgency. (1996)

The kind of 'Iraq War' that US was trying to avoid = now taking shape

Iran-backed Shiite Militias are capturing former Sunni cities where ISIS has receded.

*Note = this is not the US-trained "Iraqi Army" that we are funding/arming/using as proxies to theoretically retake Mosul.

these are the shiite militias from Karbala/Najaf/Basra, the Badr/Sadr brigades... the de facto power in Southern Iraq.

Basically, the outlines of a sunni-shia civil war are getting starker. You've got Obama claiming that negotiating a 'nuclear deal' with Iran is like way important and stuff... but meanwhile, we're using our military to enable them to enlarge their territorial control of Iraq.

Something tells me that US/Iran negotiations aren't entirely about their nuclear capacity, and have a hell of a lot to do with brokering some kind of "You guarantee stability *here*, and we'll guarantee stability *here*, and that way we keep the crazy sunnis on one side, and the crazy shiites on the other"....

I'm not suggesting Iran will rule directly over arab-shiite regions.

I'm just saying that different regions of Iraq will "align" with different neighbors

They seem happy enough now allowing iran to help them fight their Sunni 'countrymen'; long term partnership seems inevitable.

I think the kurds might end up (ironically?) best friends with the Turks.

Western iraq? Who knows. Its dirt poor and pissed off. No one wants them except ISIS. Jordan has enough refugees as it is.

2.8 million year old jawbone found in Ethiopia might be earliest example of human

Scientists have unearthed the jawbone of what they claim is one of the very first humans.

The 2.8 million-year-old specimen is 400,000 years older than researchers thought that our kind first emerged.

The discovery in Ethiopia suggests climate change spurred the transition from tree dweller to upright walker.

The head of the research team told BBC News that the find gives the first insight into "the most important transitions in human evolution".

Prof Brian Villmoare of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas said the discovery makes a clear link between an iconic 3.2 million-year-old hominin (human-like primate) discovered in the same area in 1974, called "Lucy".

Could Lucy's kind - which belonged to the species Australopithecus afarensis - have evolved into the very first primitive humans?

"That's what we are arguing," said Prof Villmoare.

But the fossil record between the time period when Lucy and her kin were alive and the emergence of Homo erectus (with its relatively large brain and humanlike body proportions) two million years ago is sparse.

The 2.8 million-year-old lower jawbone was found in the Ledi-Geraru research area, Afar Regional State, by Ethiopian student Chalachew Seyoum. He told BBC News that he was "stunned" when he saw the fossil.

    1. Suthenboy   10 years ago

What is stunning are the broad brush assumptions these guys make from such scant evidence.

They find a three million year old tooth fragment and before you know it they have the guy's family portrait and daily schedule including what he had for his last meal.

    2. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

Curiously, the jawbone was still in the middle of an anecdote about how the human race used to be so much better and how modern humans - "youngsters" - have ruined everything.

      3. John   10 years ago

But Yglesias is vague as to how that will happen. While he's careful to say that past democratic collapses ? such as the Honduran constitutional crisis of 2009 ? aren't necessarily models for what will happen here, he does seem to presume some kind of crisis. At some point, an impasse between the executive and legislature will create a state of exception, a point at which disaster cannot be averted through normal legal channels.

That is nothing but fantasy porn the little bastard is having about Obama making himself dictator. This crisis will be resolved in two years when his sorry ass leaves office and put someone in there who will do something besides tell the country to fuck off. It is another example of how everything these people say is a lie. The situation is going to be resolved by turning the Presidency over to the same party that controls Congress and two years and he is terrified of that happening. So he pretends resolution is not possible.

Still don't understand this silly debate about whether homosexuality is a choice. For most, it is not (my sister is gay and it was obvious from an early age). But even if it is a choice, so what? If a guy chooses to get it on with another guy for any reason, why does that matter to the government? Why should they be treated any differently? There's a lot I like and admire about Ben Carson, but his idiotic religion has poisoned an otherwise great mind. Pity...

    1. John   10 years ago

Because if it is a choice, I am free to discriminate against you for it like I am free to discriminate against you over any other choice you make. And it is still a choice. Just because you have a particular preference doesn't mean you can't choose not follow it for whatever reason. Our genes do not compel us to do things. They only make some things seem more desirable than others.

      1. Andrew S.   10 years ago

Even given that, I wouldn't consider it a choice. I have no desire to be with a man. Ever. There's zero attraction there. Same thing to be said in reverse for a gay man. That they could technically "choose" to ignore their desires and go with a heterosexual lifestyle is pretty silly.

        1. Antilles   10 years ago

Yeah, don't think I could 'perform' with another man. I was horny as hell after Air Force boot camp, but the thought of hooking up with one of my fellow Airmen was never an option. But who knows what years of prison does to you? Guys who have sex in prison only do so because women aren't available, or to show their dominance. And I'm sure they all go back to women the moment they're released.

        2. John   10 years ago

People choose a life of celibate all of the time. No one says you have to follow through on your urges. If you did, how could we hold pedophiles criminally and morally responsible for their actions? Indeed, that is the defense they give "I can't help it but I am only sexually attracted to children". I have no doubt they are. That, however, doesn't mean they can't choose not to act on that. Same thing with any other sexual desire. You can't choose if you desire it, but you always can choose if you act on it.

And so you don't think I am equating homosexuality with real deviance like pedophilia, I can't help but desire to bang every attractive young woman I see. If one of them ever offers me the chance to do so, I would choose not to because I am married. I am not a slave to my desires and am responsible for my actions.

          1. Bill Dalasio   10 years ago

But, if that's the case, the choice they have isn't to be gay or not. It's whether to be celibate or not.

            1. Antilles   10 years ago

You're far wiser than your namesake...

          2. cavalier973   10 years ago

There are two things that clearly differentiate the human species from animals. One, we use cutlery. Two, we're capable of controlling our sexual urges. Now, you might be an exception, but don't drag me down into your private Hell.

      2. Antilles   10 years ago

These same people also like to say that homosexuals should be treated differently because they represent such a small percentage of Americans. Following that logic, we should also discriminate against Jewish people since religion is a choice and there aren't that many of them anyway. Again, silly religions diminish otherwise great minds.

Agree with the idea that it is wrong to discriminate based on religion, but OK to discriminate against gays (if you believe that is a choice).

      3. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

Hold on a second. If you can discriminate against people for choices they make, why can't you discriminate on the basis of religion? That is a choice after all.

Actually I think people have the right to discriminate however much they want and for any reason. There are a lot of stupid reasons to discriminate, but let the knuckleheads self exile themselves if they want.

        1. Antilles   10 years ago

Yes, in an ideal world we should have the right to discriminate against anyone we want for any reason. But we don't live in that world. And I find it downright baffling that some choices (like religion) are respected while others (who we choose to have sex with) are scorned. I despise double standards and wish people could be more logical and consistent with their beliefs.

        2. MJGreen   10 years ago

Precisely. Your genes don't compel you to rest on the Sabbath or abstain from non-kosher meat (or refuse service to a gay wedding). If you can freely inhibit your sexual preferences, you can do the same with religious preferences.

      4. lap83   10 years ago

I agree with John, except I'd argue that progressives probably don't think it can be a choice because choice only applies to women who are considering having an abortion.

    2. Doctor Whom   10 years ago

People who say that homosexuality is a choice clam up when I mention the issue of whether religion is a choice.

I don't think it should matter whether sexual orientation is a choice, but in the reality in which we live now, there are these two little things called the equal-protection clause and the sympathies of the voters.

      1. SIV   10 years ago

Why would they "clam up"? I don't know any religious person who doesn't think their faith involves choice. Why would Christians evangelize if not for the hope people choose it.

        1. Antilles   10 years ago

Because these same religious people justify their aversion to gays by claiming (falsely) that the homosexual lifestyle is a choice and therefore doesn't deserve the same types of protection that other groups receive. So, what's to stop us from doing the same to people who choose the 'wrong' religion?

Talk about a childish idiot. "I was a piece of shit as a young man, and I'm a piece of shit now, therefore libertarian ideology is discredited."

      1. RBS   10 years ago

        no life experience

This describes every progressive I have ever met. I dated one who thought her private high school was diverse because there was one black kid.

      2. John Titor   10 years ago

"Almost all humanity used to live this way, and we called it feudalism. Many people want to go back to that sort of system, this time under the label of libertarian or "the untrammeled free market."

Yep, feudalism was 'free market'. Not the local political elites assuming that they had a right to the labour and partial ownership of the people on their lands.

        1. BiMonSciFiCon   10 years ago

To equate libertarianism with feudalism is to understand neither.

          1. John Titor   10 years ago

Libertarians are simultaneously degenerate anarchists who are only out for themselves and absolute control freaks that wish to keep everyone in a state of poverty. They really need to pick one and stick with it.

          2. Bill Dalasio   10 years ago

But, there were really rich people under feudalism. And there would be really rich people under libertarianism. Don't you see? They're exactly the same!!

      3. thom   10 years ago

He has it backwards. The more life experience I get under my belt, the more libertarian I become. I can't even fathom how it could be any other way.

    5. Jordan   10 years ago

One can dismiss the core of near-sociopathic libertarian ideas with one simple question: What kind of society maximizes freedom while providing the best outcomes for the greatest number of human beings? You cannot start with the assumption that a Russian novel writer from the '50s is a genius, so therefore all ideas about government and society must fit between the pages of "Atlas Shrugged."

      Sounds legit.

      1. Warty   10 years ago

I love when people profess to have been libertarians and proceed to decry a lazy strawman version of Objectivism. Maybe if he'd read a little more of the texts he's claiming to disprove...

Optimist. Few people ever see themselves as the villain. To do so requires a level of self-awareness of which not many are capable.

They'll agree their action would be wrong if someone else did it. And then they'll give you song and verse, the moral of the story being that it was okay for them to do something they knew was wrong.

          2. JWatts   10 years ago

I'm always amused at the very idea that diversity is just being within sight of a different type of person.

      2. BiMonSciFiCon   10 years ago

What kind of society maximizes freedom while providing the best outcomes for the greatest number of human beings?

A free one. It's worked every time it's been tried. The shit they want has failed every time. And we're the naive ones.

        1. John Titor   10 years ago

None of them ever seem to define what 'best outcomes' equate to either. I get that it's just a vague call for utilitarianism, but you can argue that a 'best outcome' would be steady employment by someone who provides for all of your basic needs. It'd still be a form of slavery.

What. Canada and Europe are among the freest places on Earth, they're just shitty compared to my ideal world.

I also like that their view of Europe is based on mindless stereotypes untethered from reality. Switzerland, Ireland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Poland and Luxemburg all have very low tax rates and minimal government intervention.

Poland's economic growth in particular has been ridiculous - http://www.paiz.gov.pl/_img/_pictures/17173.jpg

Not surprisingly, those countries are some of the fastest growing in Europe. I actually know about Europe though, unlike the Euro-fantasia the average Salonista lives in.

These people can inhabit an intellectual fantasy because, either way, the cause of bureaucratic socialism is prevailing. It's especially hilarious that he takes the example of a dirt poor country where the government basically exists to rob the populace and thinks this is libertarian. As usual, the comments lack any kind of self awareness and make the original article look brilliant by comparison:

Also, just FYI, there is a trolling contest I found on a website where the goal is to send in a fake article to a ludicrous website and get them to publish it. So if you read anything from Salon that seems even more insane than usual in the coming months, it could very well be my doing.

Anyone have themes I could touch on for my article? I'm thinking libertarianism somehow related to gentrification.

      1. Antilles   10 years ago

This sounds like a dangerous experiment. You know that no matter how crazy some ideas are there will be people who glom onto them and try to impose them. Extremists have enough insane ideas. We don't need clever trollers to give them any more. Just an opinion...

        1. Irish   10 years ago

Sure, but I'm not giving them new opinions. I'm just going to write the craziest article I can on an opinion they already have.

I'm thinking about writing an article opposed to gentrification which works in the phrase 'good segregation' or 'separate but equal.'

          1. Antilles   10 years ago

Still, as an intelligent and persuasive writer (which I know you are) you solidify their silly beliefs further. And is there any way to let the marks know they've been duped? You could make up all sorts of awesome quotes from the gay couples about how ashamed they are that their kid is cis-hetero (or whatever they are calling it). Maybe you could also claim that one couple is suing to force the insurance companies to reimburse them for the costs of this therapy under Obamacare?

She starts off with this zinger: "I'm gay. And I want my kid to be gay, too."

But she ends up saying she'll support her 6 yo daughter's choices, though she doesn't like that her daughter had a crush on a boy.

"My friend wrote back with a slew of helpful advice, ending with a punch to my gut: "Bet it wouldn't bother you so much if her crush was on a girl."

"She was right. I'm a slightly overbearing pro-gay gay mom. But I'm going to support my daughter, whatever choices she makes."

The leftist objection to gentrification has always baffled me. When whites fled the inner cities for the suburbs, it was called 'white flight' and was bad. Now that they're returning and spending their money to improve the inner cities, it's called gentrification and is...bad. Bottom line: everything white people do is bad!

        1. Dweebston   10 years ago

The left is terribly possessive of their grievance groups, and anything that compromises their political patronage (especially any form of upward mobility) must be condemned as white imperialism or whatever.

The campus rape epidemic is the byproduct of conservative families bringing up children in the stultifying clime of social and spiritual repression. Conservatism, and especially religious conservatism, produces boys who believe women belong to men and girls who believe women should not speak out to protect themselves. Gays commit less rape (I'm guessing), and conservatives hate gays, so conservatism causes rape. Throw in some conflated stats and implicate religious or conservative student groups.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure this is crazy enough to parody Salon.

Wreckage of Japanese battleship found in the Pacific

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen says that he and a team of researchers have located the wreckage of the Japanese battleship Musashi, more than 70 years after it was sunk during World War II.

If confirmed as the Musashi, the find would complete eight years of searching by Allen's team, who have outfitted the billionaire's yacht, M/Y Octopus, with high-tech equipment to map undersea topography. A statement released by Allen's publicity agency Edelman early Wednesday said the wreckage had been located Sunday by a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) outfitted with a high-definition camera.

"Since my youth, I have been fascinated with World War II history, inspired by my father's service in the U.S. Army," Allen said.

Allen tweeted out two pictures of the wreckage, which was located in the Sibuyan Sea off the central Philippines, less than a mile below the surface.

Completed in 1942, Musashi was one of the heaviest warships ever constructed, weighing in at just under 73,000 tons and armed with nine 18-inch main guns. It was sunk on Oct. 24, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf after being repeatedly torpedoed and bombed by U.S. forces

Daniel von Bargen, actor best known for his roles in 'Seinfeld' and 'Malcolm in the Middle' is dead

Colleagues of Daniel von Bargen are mourning the death of the actor, who died over the weekend after a long illness, Cincinnati's WLWT 5 reports. He was 64.

"We are learning of this event at the same time as the rest of the industry and are deeply saddened to hear of Daniel's loss," his voice-over agents at Access Talent say in a statement released to PEOPLE on Wednesday.

Von Bargen ? who was perhaps best known for playing Kruger on Seinfeld and Commandant Edwin Spangler on Malcolm in the Middle ? was reportedly a diabetic and had been hospitalized in 2012 after a failed suicide attempt.

"For the past five years, he had been grappling with health issues that precluded his active pursuit of work," von Bargen's former agents say of the actor, who also had a lengthy r?sum? of film work including roles in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Super Troopers.

      Fuck that shit.

Officials said Thursday that von Bargen told the 911 dispatcher he was supposed to go to a hospital that day to have some toes amputated because of diabetes complications and had already had one leg amputated.

      FUCK THAT SHIT.

He said he was feeling depressed before he shot himself.

Understandable. But for everyone's sake, get a shotgun and a hacksaw and do it properly.

      1. Jordan   10 years ago

A shotgun and a hacksaw? I think one of those is redundant.

        1. SIV   10 years ago

It's to shorten the barrel so you can still reach the trigger when it's pointed at your head. Plus the added incentive to do it right and avoid facing an NFA charge for a SBS.

          1. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

I don't know. I think it might be safer to saw off your head and put it a safe distance away from yourself so you can shoot it with your unaltered shotgun.

Your plan to saw the barrel off could get you in hot water with the ATF. Better safe than sorry.

House committee to subpoena e-mails from Clinton's personal account

  32. Enough About Palin   10 years ago

    This bitch is done.

Revealed: Clinton's office was warned over private email use

State Department technology experts expressed security concerns that then?Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was using a private email service rather than the government's fortified and monitored system, but those fears fell on deaf ears, a current employee on the department's cybersecurity team told Al Jazeera America on Tuesday.

The employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job, said it was well known that Clinton's emails were at greater risk of being hacked, intercepted or monitored, but the warnings were ignored.

"We tried," the employee said. "We told people in her office that it wasn't a good idea. They were so uninterested that I doubt the secretary was ever informed."

    http://america.aljazeera.com/a.....l-use.html

    1. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

That and the willingness for the White House today to throw her under the bus. I was shocked that they didn't at least just do the "no comment" deal.

To go out and explicitly say that she was violating their policy was pretty fucking amazing.

      1. tarran   10 years ago

Obama's gang stabbing Hillary Clinton in the back?!? Who could have seen that coming?

        1. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

I bet it also shocked you that the gang stabbing was as subtle as a sledge hammer too.

There really is some bad blood between the Obamas and the Clintons. Normally I would have expected a public "no comment" and then privately blabbed the dirt to the media as an "unnamed source".

It almost makes me wish that Hilary does get elected so I can watch her get her revenge on the Obamas. "I'm vetoing funding for the Obama library and also slashing their secret service detail."

          1. Dweebston   10 years ago

I don't know, I'm more inclined to side with whoever suggested earlier that the party is airing dirty laundry well ahead of the primaries. Some stern words by the president's office, some light remonstrations in the otherwise sympathetic press, and before long even mentioning the emails will be as pass? as they desperately wanted Benghazi to become. What difference, at this point, etc.

Assuming there's nothing particularly notable in those emails, of course. Could be the president is distancing himself from a timebomb. I rather doubt it, though.

        2. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

Odd, since Clinton's 2016 campaign staff is made up of the former Obama frat boy club campaign.

I'd like to see the GOP to run a strongly female/strongly non-white campaign against her.

    2. Antilles   10 years ago

Nope. Rules don't apply to the elites. This will be long forgotten (and buried by the media) by the time the election rolls around. Besides, the Republican challenger wants to devour America's children.

    3. Sevo   10 years ago

"We tried," the employee said. "We told people in her office that it wasn't a good idea. They were so uninterested that I doubt the secretary was ever informed."

      I see the defense already.
She didn't know a thing about it. Those email address thingys are just too hard for an old hag like that.

      1. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

I wish some intrepid reporter would really start digging. I'm really curious who it is that ran that mail server for her.

I think the hag and her minions really are dumb enough to think they know enough to run their own mail server and not get hacked.

I think the over/under on all her e-mails being archived somewhere in Russia or China is about 99%.

        1. Dweebston   10 years ago

Any reporter on the left who goes after Clinton would be drummed out of her line of work before long.

Any reporter on the right would be marginalized as usual.

        2. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

I mean what are the chances that Craig Livingstone is a competent mail admin?

        3. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

I wish some intrepid reporter would really start digging. I'm really curious who it is that ran that mail server for her.

It's McAfee on the front end, so it's not Google? probably an actual Exchange server.

    4. GILMORE   10 years ago

I think its notable that David Petraeus was basically threatened with 10 years of jail time for "using classified information in insecure channels"...

....while clinton can just go "Rules are for Little People". She ran the fucking state dept communications from a server in *her house*?...

that's not 'incompetence' - that's actively trying to avoid oversight.

      1. Antilles   10 years ago

Did she conduct official business in those Emails? The press is not entitled to sift through every detail of the lives of officials serving the public. They aren't evil for wanting privacy.

The press cannot sustain its high privileges in America if it is not worthy of them. One way it proves itself unworthy is by tarring officials as evil for not being totally available to fill the daily news hole.

We, the people, do not exist to serve the press. The press exists to serve the operation of the republic. When its operation becomes counterproductive to that purpose, it must be restrained. "

Must Reazon put links to social media on their mobile feed? It takes up 25% of the screen - wasted space.

And while I'm at it, why does Reazon refresh every time I rotate my iPhone, wasting time and annoying me?

Reezon is becoming too much bother for the trouble. Particularly when Warty's misadventures are available elsewhere.
