Early Returns Have Scotland Staying with UK

Big cities haven't reported out yet

Early returns from voting across Scotland show those against independence from the United Kingdom holding a narrow lead.

Six of the first eight of Scotland's 32 districts to report voted to remain part of the U.K.., with the No side holding a slim 51%-49% margin.

The big cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen have yet to report.

Got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand this will make a certain glaswegan I know very sad and that makes me very happy. It probably also helps the markets a bit. On the other hand a Scotland forced to face fiscal reality would be a beautiful thing to see, as well as a generation of Conservative majority in the UK. Not that the Tories are all that great, but they're a damn sight better than the socialists. And with a consistent majority they may actually move a bit back to their roots.

I'm not convinced the Scots would do other than continue borrowing to keep the supply of free shit moving, and I think it's a good bet that financial houses would keep loaning under the 'too big to fail' theory.
They may not be able to print drachmas, but the gov'ts of the loaners can...

I'm skeptical of that. I know the UK is a different place and all, but in the US, the Republicans having a majority for 6 years didn't exactly result in free markets, prosperity, and liberty. If anything, it seems like the opposite (failure or being the opposition) causes a relative jump towards the party roots.

Actually, the last thing anyone should want is for the Tories to move a back to their roots.

The Tories roots are landed aristocratic privilege and empire. This meant high tariffs which kept agricultural prices high.

It as the Liberals who favored free trade and free enterprise. It would be nice to see the LibDems go back to their roots.

It would also be nice to see the Tories go back to the good parts of Thatcherism.

And so we are staying in the UK. That's the best I think. Really only the Glasgow region said Yes. Edinburgh / Aberdeen areas were more like 60/40.

Cameron's speech this morning was really interesting. He made a lot of concessions. Basically Scotland got "devo max" without voting on it.

But he also worked in an idea of creating a system of English votes for English laws. Which means he will still make a play for an English system that will be free of the influence of the rUK and therefore much more market oriented. So that ought to make some Reasonoids I've been reading quite happy.
