Shikha Dalmia on the Big Showdown Between India and the U.S.
India and America are facing their biggest diplomatic crisis since India tested a nuclear bomb two decades ago. But this time it is over nothing so explosive. It is about how America, thanks to New York Prosecutor Preet Bharara, also of Indian origin, humiliated an Indian diplomat for allegedly underpaying her Indian housekeeper.
Although Indians' national pride is disturbingly tied to how their government officials are treated abroad, notes Dalmia, the way Bharara conducted himself shows that he is less concerned about foreign housekeepers and more concerned about his own moral fanaticism.
