Brickbat: That's Scary

Police in Stevenage, England, ordered James Creighton to take down or cover up the Halloween decorations outside his home. They said one resident had complained that the collection of fake skeletons and dismembered bodies frightened children. Creighton says he's decorated his home to raise money to fight cancer for the past three years and has never had a complaint before.

But how the hell much money could he possibly raise with Halloween decorations that would do anything at all for cancer research or treatment of cancer patients?

$500,000 I'd reckon would be maybe a year of intense treatment for a cancer patient.

i have to say though, i'm pretty tired of things being for cancer. Freedom does not have to have a tax-exempt charity as its beneficiary to be good. I hate it when the good guys fall into this logic trap. This guys should be left alone...period.

It's like the NFL during "October-Breast". Watching football is perfectly valid on its own. It doesnt need to raise my awareness of anything else.

I reject the premise that the only legitimate pursuits are for charitable purposes.

That's kind of the way I feel about the covering up of nudity, especially children's, even when there's no state power involved. I find it creepy that people would consider it offensive. Covering it up implies a sexiness that I either don't think is there to begin with or am sad that people would be sorry about.

Creighton could point out that the dismembered bodies represent the result of CANCER and exhibit fright over the blatant INSENSITIVITY and LACK OF COMPASSION of the complaining resident.
