City Forcibly Cuts Down Hockey Fan's 'Playoff Lawn'

Frank Miller, of Park Ridge, Illinois, is a huge fan of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team, which recently skated its way into the Stanley Cup finals. As NBC Chicago reported,
Just like the players don't shave during the playoffs, Miller decided not to cut the lawn in front of his Park Ridge home.
To make sure people understood the gesture, he put up a sign saying:
PLAYOFF LAWN
Won't cut until Hawks win the Cup!
You know what happens next!
"I was watching the playoffs one night with my son and hear a lawn mower going off, and I come outside, 'What are you doing?' The guy was cutting my lawn with a giant industrial-sized mower, and he said that the city had come and paid him to cut my lawn," Miller said.
As Tweeted at me by beloved sports aficionado Steve Smith, who adds: "Now this is big gub'mint run amok…."

STEVE SMITH VOW TO SHAVE SASQUATCH FUR EVERY DAY TIL CUBS WIN WORLD SERIES.
Obligatory.
I'd like to pick on Chicago busybodies, but this would probably happen her in Boston too. Why the hell do people think they can dictate what someone else's house looks like?
That's Park Ridge busybodies, thank you!
Same town that doesn't allow such things as newspaper boxes. Town founded by a bunch of "aesthetes" decades ago.
Home town of Hillary Clinton I believe. I grew up in the city only a few miles from there.
I'll do you one better. I grew up in Park Ridge. Hillary was a Goldwater Republican back when she lived there.
Bottom line. He broke that city's most sacred commandment.
Thou shall not lower thy neighbor's property value.
It fucking happens everywhere.
I had the city mow my lawn in Lexington fucking Kentucky (I had moved to a small town about 25 miles away and hadn't had the opportunity to mow the lawn at the old house when spring rolled around). I was then sent a bill for the "service" I was provided.
Why the hell do people think they can dictate what someone else's house looks like?
Because fuck you that's why.
I've made the same argument with regards to smoking bans in private businesses that when people claim they have a right to a smoke-free environment, what they're really claiming is that they have the right to boss other people around and tell them what to do with their private property. You'd be amazed by how many people think they're virtuous for wanting to boss people into doing the "right" thing. (Actually, H&R commenters probably wouldn't be amazed.)
I wonder if I let my front lawn die a bit more if the city will come in and replace it for me...
At your expense. And they'll charge you sports stadium prices for the goods and services.
COOK COUNTY- CITY OF CHICAGO

Frank Miller and Steve Smith in one article? Let the memes commence!
STEVE SMITH NOT LIKE RAPE IN SIN CITY! STEVE SMITH HATE NOIR!
This is why I live in the fucking country.
This, this, a 1000x this.
There is a guy locally that won in court over not mowing his lawn. He also has a piece of property that the village wouldn't let him put in a doughnut shop even though there is a gas station at the same intersection. In protest he has decorated the property with a large assortment of used toilets as flower pots.
So, if I understand this story right, if you generally let yourself go, the Park Ridge officials will swing in and take up the slack. I'm not sure I see the problem here. Guy should let his car payment, house repairs and housecleaning go.
The salient point is not to get noticed by STEVE SMITH.
They will send him a bill, and put a lien on his house for it if he doesn't pay.
Damn, he got a free mow out of the deal? I usually have to pay forty bucks!
I can guarantee you that this was not a free mow job. I'd bet a trillion dollar coin that he was sent a bill.
Teehee, mow job
/middle schooler
STEVE SMITH RAPE LAWN INTO SUBSERVIENCE!
NICE HOUSE MAKE STEVE SMITH THINK OF STOPPING RAPE AND PUTTING DOWN ROOTS.
STEVE SMITH COULD GET JOB WITH COOK COUNTY AS CONSULTANT. THEIR RAPE OF TAXPAYER IS CLUMSY AND WASTEFUL. STEVE SMITH NEVER WASTE ANY TASTY PARTS OF HIKERS.
Say what you will about Chicago, but I actually think we're too busy with large-scale nanny-stating to worry about people's lawns. Park Ridge (a suburb just north of O'Hare), on the other hand...
Why do people voluntarily live in Illinois?
Some of us are chained here by family, work, etc.
ILLINOIS NAZIS!!! STEVE SMITH RAPE ILLINOIS NAZIS!!!!
YOU KNOW STEVE SMITH JUST WANT HENRY GIBSON. REST OF NAZIS NOT SO GOOD AS HENRY GIBSON.
...he said that the city had come and paid him to cut my lawn," Miller said.
And I'm sure the city sent out for competitive bids, and passed the savings on to the homeowner.
The city charged me $75 when they did this to me in 2008.
After that I decided to hire a mowing service to come every 2 weeks so that I might not run afoul again (I wasn't living in the house at the time), and they charged me $40 per cut. And that was a good job, not the 1/2 ass shit the city did just to get my lawn back below whatever arbitrary limit they set as the maximum height.
I would be tempted to do this again and let the grass grow around very large chunks of concrete.
"Get off my lawn!"
(Do I have to do everything around here?)
I am disappoint at the lack of Frank Miller references.
Sometimes man you jsut have to roll with it.
