University of Michigan (Flint) economist Mark Perry has a interesting post at his Carpe Diem blog about a new Bureau of Labor Statistics study that finds that far more women than men are now earning bachelor's degrees. Perry notes the the BLS study…
…includes data on educational attainment at ages 23, 24, and 25 by gender from a longitudinal survey of 9,000 young men and women who were born between 1980 and 1984. For each of the three ages reported (23, 24, and 25) there is a significant gender gap favoring women for college degrees, and for the youngest cohort of 23-year-olds the gender disparity is huge: there are 165 women in the sample who have graduated from college at age 23 for every 100 of their male peers. (his emphasis) Also, at each age group there are more women currently enrolled in college than men (e.g. at age 23, 17.3% of women are enrolled in college vs. 16.8% of men), so there is really no chance that the college-degree gender gap will close in the future.

Just because men are increasingly feckless, that doesn't mean that there's any war being waged against them, right? On the other hand, Perry notes that the Obama White House created in 2009 a special panel to to encourage federal agencies to take "into account the needs of women and girls in the policies they draft, the programs they create, the legislation they support."
Last year the Pew Research Center issued a survey that found that American women are now more keen to climb the career ladder and bring down big salaries than the guys are:
Two-thirds (66%) of young women ages 18 to 34 rate career high on their list of life priorities, compared with 59% of young men. In 1997, 56% of young women and 58% of young men felt the same way.
Colleges have been enrolling lower percentages of males relative to females for a while now. The current ratio hovers around 60/40. So guys, even if you don't see how a college education will help you with your downsized career plans, given these new survey results you might want to consider enrolling as a way to acquire an MR degree.
Given these trends, the dating scene for guys who do go to college must be awesome.

More women than men were attending college even when I was an undergrad (1980 Freshman year - when some of the people studied were brn) - in fact, it was about 60/40 women/men at my school.
So
1) I don't believe this is new - maybe just more pronounced and
2) I wish I wasn't too old to sign up for a Mr. degree....I could be a kept man.
I went to school for accounting and it was almost all women. I work with a lot of very good looking women in the corporate world. I thinks it's funny because everyone pictures the typical accountant as the 1950's suit and tie geeky guy with the thick glasses and Clark Kent haircut. Nothing could be further from the truth.
And how! My wife is an accountant. Her friends at the firm include a cute and sunny Chinese girl, a cute little white girl, and a smoking hot Thai/Cambodian girl. My wife is black. We are all going to hit the bars tonight to celebrate the end of Tax Season. Those girls can hit it hard. Should be fun.
I'll try to get some pictures. Their firm is doing cocktails at 4:30 this afternoon. I'm meeting up with them @ 6:00PM. It will probably be a shit show by the time I get there.
Cheers, EDG! I am doing the same. Lots of women at my firm too, and yeah, nothing like 4/15 party to inspire some epic drunkenness. Here's to a return to normalcy for your wife, her pals, and me!
I work at our corporate HQ. Every single one of the 10 hottest women I've seen since I started working here were KPMG external auditors. Makes me happy I'm getting into that game, and angry I didn't major in it.
Didn't hate it. The engineering professors were generally cool. I did hate the pre-meds because they hated engineers. It has to do with blowing the Bell Curve in required classes like Physics and Calculus.
And Loyola had nothing on the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (CONDOM). There's just something about a repressed Catholic school girl.
Have you been back? Last time I was there I could barely recognize it from all of the new construction. From what I can tell, the university pretty much runs the student's lives now. I remember it being much more open before and not so structured.
Same here -- the Math department at my school might as well have had a "women need not apply" sign on the door. I don't think I saw a single woman who was a Math major at the school I went to.
Still, I liked having a social life outside of college -- it seems to me like the only social life most college students have is in the context of college.
Just remembered that one of the women was getting a double major, and the other was paying her way through college by working for a hotel, so neither one of them was a deadbeat.
Lucky bastards. When I went to school there were two guys for every girl.
At the school I went to (Embry Riddle Aeronautical University) I wish it were that high. Hell, we even an entry in the Urban Dictionary as a result of our shitty male/ female ratio: Riddle Vision.
I have one younger friend who is currently a female student there. She is legitimately hot, and also very forward and eager. I'm still not sure if I made the right call turning her down when she was 16.
You probably wouldn't want to now. Not without insisting on a cleacn STD test first. Chicks like that (the few that go to ERAU) usually end up getting passed around like currency. Even the ones that don't end up with harrems of guys following them around. Think about that South Park episode where Bebe's boobs started developing and all the guys devolved into apes when she was around and you're about half way there.
I know quite a few people from there who work for NASA or NASA contractors now. I think half my graduating class ended up with United Space Alliance. At least when they graduated, now most have probably moved on since the shuttle was retired.
Question about the college scene: how do the kids going today afford the Mustangs and high-end cars that I see when I drive by the campus? The cost of college is obscene compared to when I was going, and I sure as hell couldn't afford anything but an old beater when I was going.
Back in ought 8, I said that the stimulus should have been in form of debt credits to every American. They could be used to pay down (in order):
1. Student Loans (since Federally guaranteed and unbankruptable)
2. Mortgages (to help the banks)
3. Other consumer debts
4. Straight cash, if you were out of debt.
I still would have opposed it, but it would have actually, you know, done something useful.
That would have sucked. Everyone who was responsible enough to actually pay off their debts would be subsidizing dickheads who borrowed way more money than they should have.
Why Should I have to pay for some yuppie college brat's Mustang?
I have a fairly useless degree (BA in Liberal Arts with a focus in History), but I've been paying what little debt I came away with religiously. I'm ready to choke one of my friends who keeps posting on facebook about how student loan debt should be forgiven because it makes her sad.
I'm ready to choke one of my friends who keeps posting on facebook about how student loan debt should be forgiven because it makes her sad.
Mine got paid off last year (after paying off roughly $16K in the span of a year) and I have the same contempt for these kinds of people.
Ideally, student loans could be written off in bankruptcy and all colleges would be charged a surtax from their profits/endowment every year to help pay for the loss, so the banks wouldn't be the only ones taking it up the tailpipe.
My sis is a HS senior now, and my parents are stressing about how to pay for it. My dad keeps talking about him and my mom taking out loans, but I'm telling them to have her take them all because I think they'll be forgiven. He's like, "Well, I don't think they would be, although that would be nice." I'm like, "Well, it would be fucking terrible, but I think it's going to happen so just go for it."
I think they will have to be made dischargeable in bankruptcy at some point. Unless the Federal government feels like opening a bunch of debtors prisons up.
Whether they're made dischargeable in bankruptcy, totally forgiven, or neither, they already give you substantial breaks for bullshit activities like teaching in public school. More and more "loopholes" of that type will open up, if nothing else does happen.
Are there many fields where loan repayment is offered as part of an employment contract? That's pretty common in medicine if you're willing to work inner city, VA, or rural areas in particular.
Generally they offer, on top of a competitive salary, $X/year of loan repayment. Some of them are government programs, but I think more are just part of the cost of recruitment for practices and hospitals.
Currently those loopholes are for all the lefty type jobs that get paid like crap.
/Both my sisters are in fields where they can get student loan forgiveness/
Yeah, my sister is into bullshit like that so I think she will be fine. But I mostly just think my parents are too old to have to worry about paying for four years of partying for her.
No, see what happens is you eventually have kids, and/or get married, and then you file taxes and if you can't pay your loans, you get the EITC, which the government then takes away to pay the loans.
Speaking of the unreal world of academia: my wife and I have a friend who's getting her PhD at a fairly large state school. Their "bar" to advance past the first half of the program is that they have to write a viable grant application which will be reviewed by the faculty. Yup, they just want to know whether or not you can do your part to fill up the trough. I knew she was telling the truth and I still had a hard time believing it.
But remember, it's the white men who are out of touch with the real world, not the cool feminists who get jobs in the left wing hugbox we call academia.
I have a friend that's been sleeping with a lefty progressive the past few months. This women was so committed to the cause, she was doing the cold campaign calls and door knocks for Obama in WV.
She works for some local company, whose entire purpose (that I can gather), is to apply for grants and then disperse them to member business/organizations, in the name of local economic development. Consolidated rent-seeking I guess. Why wouldn't there be a market for that?
"I drove a Ford Granada. The heater didn't work and the latch on the passenger door was broken requiring me to tie the door shut with a piece of cord."
Ha!!!
I was just gonna say the same thing, except it was the drivers side door and on a Ford Escort EXP
I had a Ford as well, and only for the last two years of college. The first two years it was an hour and a half bus ride from the city where I lived to college -- and the same commute on the way back.
I went to a state school because they offered me a scholarship to cover tuition, then worked throughout high school and college until I had earned enough to buy my Corolla outright (though I did finance since they offered 0%). Before that I drove a '87 Oldsmobile, literally older than me.
Nah, I'm poli-sci and history. But I have some female friends in theater and they tell me that all the guys they work with are gay or at the very least 'fluid' in their sexuality (which I guess is a turnoff).
That being said, being very knowledgeable about literature and poetry gives me a definite appeal to girls who are into those things.
Its even better when your a misanthrope libertarian who hates politcal parties, therefore excluding you from a giant chunk of the work poli sci is actually valuable for.
But I have some female friends in theater and they tell me that all the guys they work with are gay or at the very least 'fluid' in their sexuality (which I guess is a turnoff).
Actually Eliot was quite repressed. he actually converted to Catholicism while the rest of the educated world was declaring God dead. Also he rode a bicycle.
If you traveled back in time to British India, it probably wouldn't be too hard to find some cheery daughter of a colonial policeman who's a big Kipling fan.
Take up the White Man's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.
Combo PG Wodehouse/Kipling reference to the poem "The Female of the Species is more Deadly than the Male." Bertie Wooster often uses initials for things, often in extended groups like this one.
Whether he meant it that way or not it was generally interpreted as an exhortation toward American colonialism in the Philippines (which did not go well for the Filipinos).
BTW I have to wonder why the Philippines and Haiti in the 20s are not the go-to examples for non-interventionists, instead of Iran in the 50s. They are much more obvious examples of failure in that respect, and involved much more direct US involvement than Iran did.
Probably because the Filipinos and Haitians didn't turn around and start threatening to nuke people.
You can pile up dead Filipino bodies a man high all over the place, but if they don't get nuclear armaments and start saber rattling at our interests, nobody will care.
Men can still make a pretty good living as an electrician or a plummer or some other skilled trade. Beyond that, trade schools are more geared toward male dominated fields like technology. Outside of nursing, women have to get a bachelors degree or they'll be waiting tables their whole lives.
I'm pretty sure they can also become electricians or plumbers,
That's silly, Nikki! Next you'll try to tell me that a man could competently take care of a young child, like changing diapers or bottle feeding without any zany mishaps!
I know that's impossible because daytime television commercials told me so.
"I'm pretty sure they can also become electricians or plumbers, but I don't know, I'm only a lady so I could be wrong."
Yeah, I'm sure those professions have 0.1% women because of the rape culture/glass ceiling/patriarchy and nothing at all with the fact that they're going to struggle to keep up physically.
Yeah, but you also don't see that many stay-at-home dads, and it's not like they can't do that. I'm not aware of your average plumbing or electrician job being that physically onerous that a fit woman couldn't do it. My UPS delivery person is a woman, and she is super tough and carries around heavy packages all day. They're mostly guys, but it's not like a woman can't do it.
And it is about socialization. Take a top-shelf white boy, to borrow a John-ism, send him to private prep schools but not college, and see how "able" he is to become a mechanic.
My experience is that most men really don't like their young children. I mean, yes, they love them, and they like them in the abstract, but they really don't want to be around them until they're a little older. Is that really socialization? Could be, but I doubt it.
I mean, yes, they love them, and they like them in the abstract, but they really don't want to be around them until they're a little older. Is that really socialization? Could be, but I doubt it.
I don't know; that's pretty much how I imagine I'd feel about young children too. And yeah, that's why I would never want to be a stay-at-home mom, if I was a mom.
My experience is that most men really don't like their young children. I mean, yes, they love them, and they like them in the abstract, but they really don't want to be around them until they're a little older.
THIS. There's nothing more terrifying to a man than being left alone with a very young child. They're annoying, attention whoreing little shitstains who speak some kind of strange half-English, half screeching language that only their mothers can understand and sound like finger nails on a chalkboard to men.
I don't know why you think women actually feel differently about this. Do they? Or has someone just told them that if they act like this they would be bad mothers?
"I don't know why you think women actually feel differently about this. Do they? Or has someone just told them that if they act like this they would be bad mothers?"
Conceded. Women no doubt have the same feelings. Nobody really likes children, I guess. But that doesn't mean it's to the same degree. I still say nature is playing a role in all this.
Dude, easy with the broad strokes. I stay at home alone with my 1 year old as often as fucking possible. If my wife could make as much or more than me, I'd be a stay at home dad in an instant.
True. However, being and electrician or a plumber can also be very grimey, dirty work involving basements, attics, crawlspaces, etc. not infrequently inhabited by all kinds of icky things that I will venture most women (and most men, frankly) would prefer to avoid. Not that women can't do these things...just that they'd probably prefer not to. Not that I know what women think...if I knew that, well, life would be different.
With the regulatory state the way it is, is it even possible to be an entrepreneur these days?
Well, let's put it this way. A couple of years ago, when Obama decided to fuck around with the industry, my mom threw her hands up and decided to retire.
You forgot that they could stay home and earn $93 dollars an hour on their computer. I didn't believe it until I saw my aunt's paycheck for the week of 4256$. Click here.
The entirety of HampersandR is actually a extensive mating ritual similar to the red-side garter snake or the pocupine http://science.discovery.com/l.....ituals.htm
We're all trying to win Nikki and IFH's favor by showing pretty plumage...
"That's the path my mother chose, and she had pretty good success with it."
She had good success with it? I don't think so. Did she build the roads she drove to work on did she? Would she have had any customers if the government hadn't created demand? And you know what, I'm sure there was a teacher somewhere who once taught her something! No, no. The credit "her" success belongs to me us...along with her children.
Yeah, they're called losers and their motto is "If you haven't done anything in life that you're proud of, just twist reality and logic into pretzels until you've convinced yourself successful people have you to thank. Whatever gives you another shot of self-esteem to get you through your day."
Yeah, but I also seem to rarely see female servers over, say mid-40s at those top restaurants. Do they move into management or is that where all the bitter old waitresses at diners come from?
I was a big fan of the show, though seasons behind, as I watched it all on DVD. Like most, I think the first few years were by far the best. My one great disappointment was no very-special-Blackadder episode.
The fact that Stephen Fry was guest starring on Bones at the same time that Hugh Laurie was on House, and they were on the same network, and no one at Fox was able to make a fucking call and get those two together for an episode, is one of the greatest network missed opportunities of all time.
Actually I think the more important factor is that it's all going to be with 18 - 24 year old girls meaning even your average 40-something will be in favor
Lifetime? Psssh! Just pay the minimum for 20 years and they wipe the slate clean. Everybody else will pay for it. Is that what everybody else exists for?
Also, making arguments in class against rape culture (even if you're just stating the obvious, like blacked out girls aren't asking to be raped) is a good way to increase your stock with the ladies.
Captain obvious stating the obvious here, but don't you all just love how, if these numbers were reversed, it would be taken as clear evidence of sexism in academia?
No other factors would need to be considered, just that women make up half the population and they aren't filling half the college slots. That could only be explained by sexism. This is explained by....
When I went to college in the mid-80's, they were all bragging about how they had achieved a 50/50 ratio by recruiting more women. I bet they aren't bragging any more.
It's an outrage, I tell you. I demand an entitlement designed to level the playing field. Males have just as much right to an education as females. We've been the second class citizens of academia for long enough.
Whenever males do better, the only possible explanation is gender roles, which are 100% socially constructed. Whenever females do better, the only possible explanation is innate female superiority. [/radfem]
Here is the problem. Unless you know that your odds of making it to the very top of the ladder are very good (meaning you are a good enough athlete to get a full scholarship with a reasonable chance of going pro at some point, or the combination of your academic skills and family connections points towards future CEO/national politician status) there is just no real payoff in getting a degree and even trying for the men anymore.
You're not going to get credit for trying, you won't get a fair playing field, if you do achieve some modicum of success as a result you'll just be condemned as a member of the patriarchy and if you don't you are a loser saddled with crushing debt that you could probably never work your way out of. Meanwhile as you are busting you ass you watch all the women around you spurn you for some slacker because he's such a "free spirit" and if you do meet one worth marrying she probably isn't interested because she makes more than you do.
So given that, it is not surprising that more men are opting to drop out, get a working class job and settle into a life of video games and porn rather than even try.
Sure, you can get a job that will eventually get you up to the top quartile if not top quintile of incomes assuming you actually work pretty hard for the 10 - 15 years it takes you to work your way through the ranks to those positions but your income was not the point.
The difference in lifestyle that you can support at $100,000 a year is not that much greater than what you can support at $60,000 a year, hell assuming a single person with no kids you're only looking at around an extra $15,000 - $18,000 a year in increased take home pay. Not only is the pay not really all that much better going to school and being "responsible" won't earn you any "social credit" or even help you get married/have a family because as has been noted, the women are more likely to have a degree than you and does not need your income.
So yeah, getting a real degree can earn you more money but unless your goal is money for it's own sake it doesn't really help men out very much anymore.
Sure it is, but the point I am making is that whatever your lifestyle, the marginal improvement in your lifestyle that you get with a salary of $100,000 a year is very small compared to what you achive on $50,000 a year, you don't start noticing significant gains in what you can afford to do for any given lifestyle until you cross into the $150,000 a year range.
That said all these numbers are based on a high cost of living area, really those should be reflected in income percentiles. Basically in America everyone from the ~65th through ~15th percentiles lives essentially similar lives for any given life situation. Higher incomes of course are better and will lead to marginal improvements across the board but you will live basically the same life. You don't start to add significantly new spending categories to your lifestyle until you start moving up past the ~15th percentile in income (~$130,000 a year currently). Problem is a college degree is no guarantee of ever reaching that wage level
$100,000 / year is definitely on the steep part of the marginal tax rate curve. All sorts of tax credits and deductions phase out at around $70,000-$80,000 (for instance, the student loan interest deduction), so not only is your tax bracket going up, your taxable income rises steadily as well. So your marginal tax rate is actually higher than the offical calculations.
And then you get this point where you want to shove as much income as possible into your 401(k) to lower your taxable income. So that reduces your take-home pay even more.
You are probably right. I'm thinking at least where I live you'd need about $120,000 / year to start really feeling comfortable.
I'm sure the actual number depends on exactly where you live but based on my experience yeah it is probably somewhere around there. Maybe a little less for those with no kids or those who live in lower cost of living areas, maybe a little more for those with above average numbers of kids or in more expensive areas.
I know for me with 4 kids in Massachusetts I need $120k a year to be at the point where I can both live in a middle class neighborhood and not be living paycheck to paycheck, when I was in Kentucky a year ago I could have achieved the same with about $95 a year.
To really feel comfortable however, I'm thinking closer to $140k a year (in Ma, for KY $115K)
Yeah. It depends on the housing prices, basically. If you want to stick to the rule that you shouldn't take on more than 3x your income in debt, you pretty much have to be making 1/3 of the average price of a decent middle class house annually.
If a decent house averages $400,000, minus the down payment, you probably need to be making around $120,000/year.
on the flipside, I know a woman who actively seeks out guys who are less successful than herself. She wants the control of the $$$ and the relationship.
Anecdotal experience with my wife's single friends - mostly MDs in their early 30s - is that "less-successful" guys tend to disappear once they find out the women are doctors. Dumbasses.
When I was at that age where I was supposed to be in college, but was instead enjoying the fun part of the "college experience" without the drudgery of actually taking classes, I discovered that many of my coworkers had useless degrees. Meanwhile the few who studied things engineering related managed to leave the restaurant shortly after graduation.
When I did go to the College of Science and Engineering at the local state university, I didn't see many women.
So while women are getting more degrees than men, are they useful degrees?
This one (super bitch) bartender was after a Masters in English with the intent of getting into some exclusive watering hole. She figured that her snobby attitude and education would make her good conversation for rich people. Little did she know that lawyers, doctors and CEOs as a general rule don't tip for shit. Joke's on her.
So while women are getting more degrees than men, are they useful degrees?
Agree and noted. A lot of girls essentially get vanity degrees in the liberal arts. They get enough of an education to be able to say witty and clever things at cocktail parties, land a husband, and become a housewife.
Y'know, I'd feel a lot more sore towards people who skip on their college debts, if I didn't know that most of their tuition went to administrator salaries. People, we, as taxpayers, won't be stuck with this bill. When the time comes, it will be really easy for a populist candidate to convince the American public to tell the former associate assistant dean of female advancement to pound sand instead of get a six figure pension.
It doesn't just go to administrator salaries. It also pays for salaries for tenured professors who don't do any work. Or barely do the minimum necessary to avoid having their tenure revolked.
I had one professor, an immigrant from France, which is probably where he got his work ethic, got tenure at 35 (which is young) and within a few years was barely showing up to teach his classes.
Tenure in American academia is the functional equivalent of being a mid-level bureaucratic functionary in France.
Oh please, that sounds like more class-war bullshit like the CEO pay crap. It's pretty obvious what they're doing...drum up discord with the administrators and you can convince sheep to nationalize the colleges.
My guess those administrator salaries are less than 1% of your tuition (google couldn't find hard data, which probably means I'm right that it's minimal). The real cost is probably the extravagant facilities. No matter where you go, every college you see is expanding their campus. Compare the buildings at any college to whatever is surrounding it and you'll see the disproportion manifesting itself.
I think that facilities are a big one. That's one of several reasons why I am never giving any more money to my school. They keep building all these unnecessary new buildings and replacing things that still work and yet they claim that there is nothing to do about tuition increasing 15-20% every year.
On top of that, the Labor Force Participation rate for men has dropped from over 90% in the early 20th century to around 63% today.
That means over 1/3 of adult men of working age are voluntarily choosing not to work. They are either on welfare, disability, living with their mothers, or staying at home to take care of the children for the bread-winner wife. I'm voting for mostly option 3. Man children living in their mom's basement playing Bioshock Infinite. (Ahem. You know who you are. Get a job!)
Is labor force participation rate really 'men of working age?' I thought it was men period, and the drop is the result of people retiring earlier and living longer. Not to mention more people going to college and not working for those 4 years.
there are 165 women in the sample who have graduated from college at age 23 for every 100 of their male peers.
That would be a 1.65 to 1 ratio of college graduates. Not that this translates to a good return on investment for the foolish women who bought into the myth that what makes a man is his career - hook, line and sinker. The unemployment rate of male college grads is lower than the rate for female college grads.
While I was in college, the faculties that were populated by more men than women where the ones that offered the engineering degrees: mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc. The ones with the most women were accounting, architecture and the humanities. Out of those, the most sought-after degrees by the labor market were: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering and accounting. So you can imagine there were plenty of hot young women (and others not so hot) that were either unemployed or underemployed, but with a college degree. And that was in Mexico. You can also imagine that with all that supply of college grads, the wages were very depressed. I knew many women wtih college degrees that ended up working as administrative assistants, including my future wife, because the labor market did not have a demand for literature majors or even invading armies of accountants.
More women than men were attending college even when I was an undergrad (1980 Freshman year - when some of the people studied were brn) - in fact, it was about 60/40 women/men at my school.
So
1) I don't believe this is new - maybe just more pronounced and

I've actually been thinking about going back for an economics degree. This story makes we want to even more:)
Pics or it didn't happen.
Those girls can hit it hard.
What HM said.
I'll try to get some pictures. Their firm is doing cocktails at 4:30 this afternoon. I'm meeting up with them @ 6:00PM. It will probably be a shit show by the time I get there.
Now I want to see the pics...
Oh yeah, accoutants definately know how to party. Our teambuilding events are total drunkfests.
In 1987, my school was hoping to get to 3:1 men to women, now they are over (slightly) 30% women, chasing down 2:1.
Given these trends, the dating scene for guys who do go to college must be awesome.
Lucky bastards. When I went to school there were two guys for every girl.
Engineer?
😉
Yes. But the ratio was for the entire undergraduate program. I don't even want to think about what it was in the engineering department.
I take it that your school body was the first to pioneer the concept of GUG?
It was Hopkins. They only went co-ed in the 70's. And admittedly, JHU was not a good draw for the wimmenz at the time.
You went to Hopkins too? Did you hate it as much as I did?
There was a reason girls came in from Loyola.
A fellow alumnus of The Johns says hi.
Hey, let's all meet up at Homewood and go throw a frisbee on The Beach and then go over to the Terror Room and get some terrible food.
What years were you guys there? I was '88 to '94.
Dude, I was there part of when you were there. I was technically pre-med though it was really just microbiology.
Have you been back? Last time I was there I could barely recognize it from all of the new construction. From what I can tell, the university pretty much runs the student's lives now. I remember it being much more open before and not so structured.
small world
I think Hopkins used to generate a lot of libertarian types. Now it seems to be a hotbed of PC politics.
Same here -- the Math department at my school might as well have had a "women need not apply" sign on the door. I don't think I saw a single woman who was a Math major at the school I went to.
Still, I liked having a social life outside of college -- it seems to me like the only social life most college students have is in the context of college.
66% female at my school. That being said, there were exactly two women in my graduating class for Physics.
Just remembered that one of the women was getting a double major, and the other was paying her way through college by working for a hotel, so neither one of them was a deadbeat.
The ratio is definitely tipped towards girls at my school.
Maybe now my recent dating excerpts make more sense?
there was one - maybe 7/10 - blond in my class of Computer Science geeks. Needless to say, she got a job quickly.
Oh, I certainly don't want her now. I'm just not sure if I should have caved when she was still in high school.
I had a friend that went there and works for NASA now.
Mommy and Daddy paid for the car. Student loans take care of the rest.
Debt. They live high on the hog until they have to enter the real world. Or hide out in the unreal world of academia forever.
There's going to be hell to pay when they have to figure out some way to pay for those things.
They'll keep voting for Democrats until something is finally worked out.
Leaving people like me and you to pick up the pieces.
Upper middle-class welfare -- hooray!
I think I could get behind a one time write down of student loans older than, say, 7 years, if it meant the end of federally guaranteed loans.
Same here, but "one time" is one of those phrases that tends to have an elastic meaning when used by government officials.
Back in ought 8, I said that the stimulus should have been in form of debt credits to every American. They could be used to pay down (in order):
1. Student Loans (since Federally guaranteed and unbankruptable)
2. Mortgages (to help the banks)
3. Other consumer debts
4. Straight cash, if you were out of debt.
I still would have opposed it, but it would have actually, you know, done something useful.
"Back in ought 8, I said that the stimulus should have been in form of debt credits to every American."
Except the idea was to go more in debt.
I doubt they'll be forgiven, but inflation combined with artificially low interest rates means the borrower wins in the long run.
Arent student loan rates still floating about 7%?
I've got just under 7%.
I think it's been holding steady at 6.5% for a while now.
Wait Nicole, how old are you?
I'm 29; we're far apart in age, obviously.
I don't know what rates are now; my small loan is locked in at less than 2% so I'm in no hurry to pay.
My sis is a HS senior now
Tell me more. [leer]
SugarFree, we don't need to know what nicole's sister thinks about anal.
Wait, I think I did that wrong.
Currently those loopholes are for all the lefty type jobs that get paid like crap.
/Both my sisters are in fields where they can get student loan forgiveness/
Are there many fields where loan repayment is offered as part of an employment contract? That's pretty common in medicine if you're willing to work inner city, VA, or rural areas in particular.
Generally they offer, on top of a competitive salary, $X/year of loan repayment. Some of them are government programs, but I think more are just part of the cost of recruitment for practices and hospitals.
in fact they made a whole TV show about it...
Booorrriiing.
No, see what happens is you eventually have kids, and/or get married, and then you file taxes and if you can't pay your loans, you get the EITC, which the government then takes away to pay the loans.
My daughter just went through this.
Fortunately only a few can hide out in academia forever. Unfortunately they are usually the worst of the bunch.
The Jezzies love to brag about how much their seemingly useless degree in X has helped them write grant applications for their job.
I just face palm.
I drove a Ford Granada. The heater didn't work and the latch on the passenger door was broken requiring me to tie the door shut with a piece of cord.
AND I WAS DAMN GLAD TO HAVE THAT!
And we had to walk uphill both ways!
I got my dad's 160K mile car - he drove 40k miles a year as part of his job. At least it was only four-five years old when I got it.
I'm 30 years old, full time employed software engineer, and I still drive a piece of shit '95 ford escort with 200K miles on it.
More important things for me to spend money on than my car I drive 15 mi to work and park in a garage.
I went to a state school because they offered me a scholarship to cover tuition, then worked throughout high school and college until I had earned enough to buy my Corolla outright (though I did finance since they offered 0%). Before that I drove a '87 Oldsmobile, literally older than me.
I still miss those extra-wide bench seats.
Given these trends, the dating scene for guys who do go to college must be awesome.
Just make sure to get notarized consent before any monkey business, or you're guilty of rape until proven innocent.
The way we're going, college educated men are going to be a valuable commodity, both in the workplace and the dating scene.
Finally my Philosophy/English degree will pay off.
You're wrong Hugh. Philosophy/English degrees NEVER pay off.
Damn, forgot the maniacal laughter.
Haha hahaha hahaha hahaha haha!
If there was ever a sure thing it's being a straight guy in a musical theater/drama program.
You chose... wisely.
Poli-sci history unite!
Its even better when your a misanthrope libertarian who hates politcal parties, therefore excluding you from a giant chunk of the work poli sci is actually valuable for.
Luckily I can sell my soul to Satan by applying for the Charles M. Koch Foundation's internship program if I need to find work.
I'm also looking into Cato, Reason, and the Leadership Institute.
I don't remember theater girls being the epitome of heteronormativity.
Doesn't bother me if they aren't.
No one polices masculinity more than women.
Well no, it won't, not if you keep shitting on TS Eliot.
TS Eliot shits on himself. Yeah, I said it!
Who is TS Eliot?
Given what I know about the sex lives of writers from that era, T.S. Eliot probably did shit on himself.
I'm almost certain James Joyce did.
Actually Eliot was quite repressed. he actually converted to Catholicism while the rest of the educated world was declaring God dead. Also he rode a bicycle.
he actually converted to Catholicism while the rest of the educated world was declaring God dead. Also he rode a bicycle.
So he was a hipster poet. I stand by my initial comment then.
Like him or loathe him, Eliot sure hated the Jews.
I think my favorite crazy ass writer from that period is Evelyn Waugh, if only for the following quote.
Someone asked him how he could be such an asshole when he was a Catholic. He said:
"You have no idea how much nastier I would be if I were not a Catholic. Without supernatural aid I would be barely even human."
Look, if you had complained about his conversion, we could have been friends.
Bullshit. Any Intro to Lit-dropout can quote the Wasteland or Prufrock.
Keep a collection of Edna St. Vincent Millay or Pablo Neruda on your table and watch the skirts hit the floor.
Pablo Neruda was a commie bastard, and is also tremendously overrated.
Fuck Pablo Neruda.
This.
Ah Millay, excellent choice.
Poe has no appeal for the fairer sex.
Are you kidding, my wife's favorite writer is Poe, In fact every Poe fan I know is female (and usually New Agey hippy pagans to boot)
Now Kipling, there is a writer that no woman in history has ever even liked forget loved.
Come on, I'm sure there are plenty of British ladies with a stiff upper lip and enormous knickers who appreciate Rudyard.
If you traveled back in time to British India, it probably wouldn't be too hard to find some cheery daughter of a colonial policeman who's a big Kipling fan.
Dude, I fucking love Kipling. And I do mean love. Proof!
He was SUCH A MENSCH!
Take up the White Man's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.
Plus he knew that the F of the S was more D than the M...
Plus he knew that the F of the S was more D than the M...
Huhwhat?? Can I get a femsplanation here?
Combo PG Wodehouse/Kipling reference to the poem "The Female of the Species is more Deadly than the Male." Bertie Wooster often uses initials for things, often in extended groups like this one.
I always read White Man's Burden as being semi-satirical.
It is.
Whether he meant it that way or not it was generally interpreted as an exhortation toward American colonialism in the Philippines (which did not go well for the Filipinos).
Sure.
1. It was like a hundred years ago man.
2. It means bashing Teddy and Woodrow.
3. Teddy and Woodrow didn't claim to be acting against the commies.
Rimbaud and Keats seemed to work okay.
Men can still make a pretty good living as an electrician or a plummer or some other skilled trade. Beyond that, trade schools are more geared toward male dominated fields like technology. Outside of nursing, women have to get a bachelors degree or they'll be waiting tables their whole lives.
Or, they could be entrepreneurs. That's the path my mother chose, and she had pretty good success with it.
I'm pretty sure they can also become electricians or plumbers, but I don't know, I'm only a lady so I could be wrong.
That's silly, Nikki! Next you'll try to tell me that a man could competently take care of a young child, like changing diapers or bottle feeding without any zany mishaps!
I know that's impossible because daytime television commercials told me so.
If by electrician you mean stay at home mom and by plumber you mean sexual object, then yes.
I didn't say anything about rape culture, patriarchy, or a glass ceiling. I just think women have more options than "BA, nursing, or waitress."
Obviously, but there are unquestionably more jobs that men tend to do which don't require a degree and in which you can earn a decent living.
You don't see many female mechanics or construction workers.
Re: stay at home dads...
My mom once said this to me: "Once you were a teenager you were almost human. Until then, not so much."
She wasn't exactly the nurturing type.
Whenever I've looked into making a hobby into a business, the cost of regulatory compliance made it not even worth further consideration.
And this is why I hate leftists.
You forgot that they could stay home and earn $93 dollars an hour on their computer. I didn't believe it until I saw my aunt's paycheck for the week of 4256$. Click here.
Should've spelled "aunt" as "ant" and "week" as "weak."
Would that have really helped me procreate?
Yes, yes, good. Remember, everything you do should be about procreation. Everything.
Everything we do IS about procreation, one way or another.
*barf*
There really are cretins out there who think like this.
Yeah, they're called losers and their motto is "If you haven't done anything in life that you're proud of, just twist reality and logic into pretzels until you've convinced yourself successful people have you to thank. Whatever gives you another shot of self-esteem to get you through your day."
they'll be waiting tables their whole lives.
Which isnt the worst paying job in the world if you are good enough to get into the top restaurants.
Yeah, but I also seem to rarely see female servers over, say mid-40s at those top restaurants. Do they move into management or is that where all the bitter old waitresses at diners come from?
So what would the reaction be were one to offer a male only scholarship, given this news?
Non-white males would get no news. White males would get UNCHECKED PRIVILEGE/PATRIARCHY/RAPE CULTURE!
I am the 18.7%!
And it's even a real degree, and followed by a master's in a real degree. Helloooooo, ladies.
So I saw this episode of House once, where this model turned out to be genetically male, despite appearing female.
And she fucked her dad.
Oh, right. Like it wasn't bad enough already.
That is actually one of the ~5 house episodes I have seen. I am confused by its relevance to the current topic...
I dunno, just rambling on in my old age, I guess.
It pisses me off to no end.
A lifetime of debt is a pretty steep price for 4 years of easy lays. Or is it?
If you are asking 18-year-old guys, the answer is "hell no!"
Actually I think the more important factor is that it's all going to be with 18 - 24 year old girls meaning even your average 40-something will be in favor
Depends how much sex you have over those 4 years. Hookers aren't cheap.
Lifetime?
Some budding male Ayn Rand needs to write an Atlas Shrugged where all the working men just say Eff It, Moochettes.
SMOKE BOMB!
When I went to college in the mid-80's, they were all bragging about how they had achieved a 50/50 ratio by recruiting more women. I bet they aren't bragging any more.
None of the shit you say has to be sane, true or rational. This is a democracy, just squeal louder than everybody else and you'll get what you want.
Duh, it's cause the men are too busy raping to study hard enough to get into college.
It's an outrage, I tell you. I demand an entitlement designed to level the playing field. Males have just as much right to an education as females. We've been the second class citizens of academia for long enough.
MEN UNITE!
I dunno -- man or woman, you can still do well for yourself in finance, accounting, or engineering if you can hack it.
If you're an average Joe and getting in debt to get a degree in Philosophy, then you're thoroughly boned.
It's nice to have that extra income when you start having kids, I can tell you that much.
You say that as if it's a bad thing.
on the flipside, I know a woman who actively seeks out guys who are less successful than herself.
If they have a job upon graduation, isn't it a useful degree? Who cares if it's the same waitress job they had before graduation?
This one (super bitch) bartender was after a Masters in English with the intent of getting into some exclusive watering hole. She figured that her snobby attitude and education would make her good conversation for rich people. Little did she know that lawyers, doctors and CEOs as a general rule don't tip for shit. Joke's on her.
You're a bartender?
'Um, I'm an upper class bartender.'
They need their own name to signify the pretension. Like barristas, but with booze. She's an artisinal beverage consultant.
"I'm not a bartender" *sneer* "I'm a professional mixologist."
Yup, they already have it.
CEOs, doctors, and lawyers make good husbands.
I never got the impression from her that she had much use for men other than the occasional romp.
Maybe she's not planning to marry for love. A nice divorce settlement will do.
Little did she know that lawyers, doctors and CEOs as a general rule don't tip for shit.
You don't get rich or stay rich by being a generous tipper.
Explosion at the finish line of the Boston Marathon about 10 minutes ago. Not sure about any other details right now.
Hmmm. true, but here's another chart ...

Even if you narrow it to 25-54, LFP is still declining from 97% to around 88% for men.
all these women graduates - but yet my department of twelve has one women in it. And the vice-presidents and the president are all males.
We're looking at a bunch of admin assistants here.
*runs from the hail of rocks*
What are you running from? Everyone knows girls can't throw.
a hail of silk panties?
That's something to run to, not from.
As a man I have no fear as there will always be big hairy spiders lurking in the dark places of the house that need killing.
