US Developer Outsourced His Work to China to Get Paid to Watch Cat Videos Instead

Verizon's IT department caught him after discovering a live connection with China

As a dad and a geek I would love to find more time to spend time with my kids, find more time to paint my new wargaming army, or prepare for my role-playing campaign. But a former US developer working for Verizon found a way to have his cake and eat it too. He did this by outsourcing his development work to a firm in China for roughly one-fifth of what he was being paid here in the US.

It wasn't until the IT security department did an audit on their VPN network and discovered a live connection from Shenyang, China. This led to an investigation that uncovered that Bob (identity withheld) was pulling down a six-figure income for gaming the system with little to no oversight.
