France Preparing for Long Haul in Mali

Leaders previously promised conflict would last just weeks

French ministers had pledged their intervention to prop up Mali'sembattled government would be short, lasting only "a matter of weeks".

Officials indicated however that France was already planning to triple the size of its military deployment - from around 800 troops to more than 2,500 - after just a few days of fighting.
