A.M. Links: America Almost Nuked the Moon, Majority Oppose Healthcare Guarantee, Sons of Dosed Scientist Sue the CIA
-
The United States once planned to nuke the moon, just to show the Soviet bloc that we could. Don't mess with America, we crazy.
- In an important shift in public opinion, a majority of Americans now say the government should not guarantee healthcare for all, according to Gallup.
- Syria's embattled government has found support in Latin America. You guessed it: The governments of Venezuela and Cuba.
- The owners of a dog shot to death by police while it was restrained by an animal control officer will sue the trigger-happy constabulary. A neighbor captured the incident on video.
- The sons of Frank Olson, a scientist who fell to his death after being dosed with LSD in 1953 during one of the CIA's weirder Cold War excesses, are suing the agency and accusing it of murder.
- Two winning Powerball tickets were sold for the record $579.9 million jackpot, one in Missouri and the other in Arizona. There's no IRS agent standing on my chest, so it wasn't me.
- French feminists are all a-Twitter (cuz that's where everybody sounds off these days) after former First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy questioned the relevance of feminism in the modern world.

That’s a man, baby!
Blin!!!! I was this close!
I think you mean blyad’, not blin.
I was trying to be polite, Theodore. -))
Polite? H&R?? Have you wound up in some alternate universe???
Civil and on-topic, biotches!
Everything in the MLs is on-topic, and anything short of goatse pics is considered civil.
And beaten out by such a lame joke, tovarisch.
Didn’t I recently see a quote from her that a woman’s place was in one of her homes?

Because he lied by ommition by failing to mention she was cuffed when he electricuted her, he was found to have acted ‘within policy’.
Notice how his buddies do absolutely nothing.
Electrocution involves death. No death, she was just shocked, not electrocuted.
I did not know that.
I believe the word you are looking for is “assaulted”.

I wonder what kind of Nazi memorabilia her family has.
Just a couple of lamps.
And hand-crafted, artisan soaps.
Samantha Fox was not a dog.
Redd Foxx, on the other hand, wasn’t particularly good-looking.
And man, he was quite the dog!

High earners! Tax rape them!
They’re both red states, the money will probably be used to unfairly buy elections in the future.
It certainly worked in the last election.
I love bursting bubbles when people dream about the lottery and giving it away to all of their family and friends by explaining the gift tax to them.
I always wondered if you could claim the giftees were partial owners of the ticket from the beginning and only get taxed up front?
Nope
Nope:

I have replied twice now, but they keep marking it as spam.
Short answer: no

If you set up the structure before claiming it, yes.
Or, if everyone can keep their story straight. Which is admittedly a long shot.
Yeah, there’s the rub right there.
The key is to have just one person do it and not notify the beneficiaries of the trust until after you claim. Then just one person has to keep the story straight.
I thought it was a negotiable document until signed, though. So if I set up a family trust or corporation after and sign as the officer of the company, how is that different than if I were to find the winner on the street a week after the drawing and sign my name to it? I’m not the purchaser, nor do I have to prove any interest in the purchase. I’m the redeemer and the ticket with my signature is enough, right?
I don’t know if lottery tickets are analogous to negotiable instruments in all legal aspects, though.
But I suspect you’re more right than not.
That is why you claim it as a trust.
Not necessarily. The key is having winning plans in writing beforehand.
Before what, though. If you have the winning ticket, can you set up a trust before you claim the prize?
How will you fund the trust?
You can initially “fund” a trust with five dollars, if you want.
You can initially “fund” a trust with five dollars, if you want.
Then how do you get your $250 Mil in there?
You would put a clause in there that all after-acquired property belongs to the trust.
I guess there could be wrangling as to whether it’s the ticket or the actual cash that is after-acquired, though.
In writing before you win. I was trying to link to tax court decisions where the splitting by the winner with family was considered a gift because of a lack of evidence supporting their was a prior agreement to do so.
There* I am so ashamed
So you have to set up the trust before the drawing, or before you claim the prize?
IANAL but the ticket is fully transferable until it is signed.
Smart winners routinely claim as a trust to preserve anonymity. I assumed you could avoid gift taxes this way as well.
Of course, this is all a stupid discussion to begin with, as there should be no estate tax, but I digress.
You’re all a bunch of unAmerican tax avoiders! Paying taxes is the greatest duty an American has!
USA! USA! USA!
IANAL = I ANAL
Just noticed that.
I would just spend it on my dream of being a super villain. Pay Warty and STEVE SMITH a fortune to cruise Northern Virginian suburbs stuffed with government workers in a rape van. Buy out churches, temples and mosque and have the new clerics teach from A Stranger in a Strange Land.
Seriously, I hope both of them are morons who constantly claim the highest earners don’t pay their fair share. Welcome to a higher tax bracket bitches.
Rationalize, of course.
What would you expect from a PhD student in English lit?
To ask me whether I want to Biggie Size my meal.
ZING!
She actually has a very good job now, if you consider a tenure track position at a good university a good job. She’s the 1% in terms of graduating PhD students getting the job they trained for while getting their PhD.
Most PhDs I know have a shitty adjunct job that pays dick and has no security.
Ha! Ha! That’s awesome!
Ha! Reminds me of a conversation I had with a left-wing lesbian friend of my then-wife, while East Germany was falling apart but before the Wall came down. She opined that East Germany had the right to prevent people from leaving, because the government had paid for their education.
Me: “So did your parents pay for your education?”
She: “Yes.”
Me: “Then do they have the right to tell you where you can live?”
She: [crickets]

Beware of Iran’s navy!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new…..oming.html
So they have a tiny, turquoise submarine, a hovercraft of some sort and a seaplane?
This is baffling…
They are so tiny that they can only be used on short range trips.
The gulf is quite shallow.
I would think the paint job would make the sub visible even while submerged.
These subs are a pretty good way to bottle up the straits: mass produce em and send them on suicide missions against carrier groups transiting the straits, and disperse them along the coast on both sides of the straits to make them hard to bomb.
It’s possible the paint job is to make the prototypes easy to find while they are testing them (I figure there is a 33% chance that one of those subs will kill its crew a la the CSS Hunley) and once they enter active service they’ll camoflage them better.
Our ASW is evolved to take out Russian attack and boomer subs. I doubt these little toy subs have much survivability.
They don’t have to be survivable. It appears they only carry one torpedo externally.
Send ten of them out at night, have them bottom on batteries till the carrier group shows up, and have them fire their torpedos and scoot.
They will almost certainly get off five shots, and that’s all they need to mission kill a carrier. Do it in the straits, and you can then bombard the disabled carrier with shore artillery until it sinks.
The Japanese used similar subs in the Pearl Harbor attack. All but one of the crews was killed, but they did penetrate the harbor and there is photographic evidence that three of them got their torpedoes off and scored some hits that were at the time mistaken for bombs.
It’s at this point that I should point out that the Iranian navy’s strategy is very much like the Germans in WW II or the Argentine Navy’s in the Falklands war.
The Iranian Navy cannot take the U.S. Navy in a straight fight, especially since the U.S. sank most of their surface fleet in 1986, costing the Iranian’s their professional officer corps (those who survived the purge of the 1979 revolution that is). The Iranians have rebuilt some deep-water capability but it’s only a handful of ships.
Sea supremacy being out of their grasp, they have turned to sea denial. Their first attempts, their minelaying campaigns during the Iran Iraq war, did have a chilling effect on Iraqi shipping during the war. The Iranians have tried to improve upon this by purchasing old Soviet diesel/electric subs and experimenting with shore launched anti-ship missiles that could kill stuff attempting to transit the straits of Hormuz.
ASW in shallow water sucks, especially close to the shore, but a few Russian subs could be easily hunted down and killed. A large force of small subs, on the other hand, will be very hard to kill completely, and are perfect for sea denial in the gulf.
So you’re proposing that Iran just uses the zerg strategy?
Iranian Navy….Zerg rush!
Indeed – I am sure the USN is in grave danger… of laughing themselves to the point of injury.
What does Iran’s navy do with its Village People recruits?

Sally grew up to be an Obamatron?

Worst name I have ever seen given to a kid was by the couple I used to live next to in Cincinnati. She was of Irish decent and wanted their son to have an Irish name but he didn’t like any of the common ones so they settled on the name of the Celtic language. Now that would be bad enough but no, they had to mess with it even further by changing the spelling to…
Gaylick
And no, I am not kidding, that was seriously his name and the parents were clueless that this name choice could come back to haunt them around 3rd grade.
Gaylick is genius! That’s going into my collection of insane names.
Friends of a friend have named their children:
Kick Racer
Tex Danger
Ruby Blue
Minty Moon
Ruby Blue isn’t too bad, if you held a gun to my head and made me choose.
Future porn star.
More so than Minty Moon? She freshens your breath.
Minty Moon! She freshens your breath. Now freshen hers.
November Rain is my all time favorite among my friends, although making my son’s middle name Danger is appealing.
I know a guy who named his first son Archer and his second son Gunner. I was kind of wickedly hoping they’d have a third and go with Angler or Trapper.
I’m sorry, giving a kid that name should be considered a form of child abuse. By now he’s in 8th grade and either the biggest bully in school or comitted suicide from all the bullying he’s recieved.
Let’s not forget the best named celebrity Dick Trickle.
Man, why not call him Gael? At least that sounds kind of awesome.
There used to be a woman in Cincinnati, not young, named (if I have the spelling correct) Tondelaya Lipschitz. I came across her in the phone book, and she turned out to be a friend of a friend.
Dick.

Seriously, not too good and not too bad. She’s absolutely miserable. Can’t hardly walk or move around anymore. She reminds me of a Cornish Cross chicken that’s 10 months old. A little late, assholes.
American People: Derp!
Sadly, when they all start getting free goodies the opinion will shift back.
The bill comes due at the same time….should be interesting to watch.
How can there be a bill for free goodies?
Bill might be the wrong word … did we agree on ‘penaltax”?
But they’re free! Nobody has to pay for them!
Many bills will come before the goodies, in the form of all the layoffs and reductions in hours that are already starting.
How about when they get fined, oops I mean taxed when they don’t buy insurance?
When they have to start waiting a few extra weeks to get those goodies, that might take a little of the shine off.
Few WEEKS? HA! You folks have no idea what’s coming down the pike…
I think this is the correct answer. They will bitch, but insist instead the government must do something do speed up their weekly prostate exams.

Why don’t you just name it ‘Operation Wang-Chung’?

They did see it; that’s why they changed their mind.

OK, maybe a little bit crazy. But if it would have averted a war or nuclear strike on earth, totally worth it.

California Finds Economic Gloom Starting to Lift
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11…..gence.html
articles like this give the impression that just the appearance of the tax hike initiative on a ballot spurred the economy all by itself. CA’s rebound, such as it is, likely has to do with no other direction being possible and businesses deciding to do business with elections done.
Of course when those new taxes hit, let us just observe if rainbows and unicorns spring up everywhere in CA. I suspect not.
I sort of get the feeling that all these ‘recovery’ stories are like Pravda: a campaign to convince us of the truth by repeating it, reality be damned. I don’t see how you look at fundamentals and conclude ‘recovery’.
Of course. When Republicans are in charge, 5% unemployment is a tragedy. When Democrats are, 8% is a recovery and shows that everything is going as planned.
With all of the businesses that have pulled out of CA in the last 2-3 years, there’s bound to be some room for small fish to grow bigger.
Economists call it a “dead cat bounce”.

Wouldn’t “with” be a better preposition there? I’m sure the student was an enthusiastic participant.

I’m sure everyone is going to remember this in 2016.
Everyone knows Goldwater Republicans worship the rise of the One Party State.
# 2 or 3 “most libertarian-leaning” US Senator.
Absurd. DeMint became a Senator in 2005 thus missed all the Big Gov votes in Bush’s first term. You can bet he would have been a loyal Compassionate Conservative had he been there.
Why do you think he ran? DeMint has spent his career targeting establishment-friendly big government GOP Senators and Senate candidates.
I would like to point out, again, that shrike is encouraging DeMint to run because he thinks it will help Democrats win.
Which is strange behavior for a Goldwater Republican, to be sure.
No. I want libertarians to produce sane candidates so that they become large enough to wield power like in a parliamentary system. Only 10-15% of Congress is needed to do that.
Supporting a guy who wants to homo-test school teachers is not the way to do that.
Sure you do…which is why you’re encouraging Democrats to win elections.
Your secret plan all makes sense now.
To be fair, Shrike claims to have voted for Johnson. Also, to be fair, those folks around here who prefer Team Red over Team Blue look just as foolish as Shrike does preferring Team Blue over Team Red.
DeMint forgot to submit that homo-testing-teachers bill before the US Senate.

You and Restoras need help. Without any other outside input, the girl in that photo is hot.
Sure, but the girl in the photo is imaginary. You may as well pine after a hentai character. If that girl showed up on your doorstep without all the photoshopping you’d probably say she has the wrong address.
Linds looks great in the Paparazzi pics where they are trying to make her look bad. Most train-wreck former-child stars are lucky to get one shot at Playboy. Lindsey Lohan can do fashion-mag spreads with famous photographers anytime she needs cash. Hell, that is her major source of income as she is uninsurable on feature films.
If she showed up at my doorstep, I’d split my booze with her and definitely let her crash on the couch. Just for the safety of the other drivers out there.

She’s no IFH, but BEHOLD! Real life UKR physician!
(Uploaded with permission, and yes, I will work with this woman beginning next week. Envy me.)

Why would anyone be jealous that you work with a 6 1/2?
Barbara Stanwyck is TCM’s Star of the Month for December. Ladies They Talk About is running on December 20.
I got to watch most of an episode of The Big Valley in the dentist’s chair on Tuesday. Bruce Dern played an evil bounty hunter. Most expensive TV show I ever watched.
I like Miss Stanwyck in Double Indemnity and Night Nurse
Meh. Just a publicity stunt for “Liz & Dick”.
She’s got the second part down pat.
Well, it looks like I’m going to break my rule about not voluntarily dealing with cops when I can avoid it. I got a total scam letter – You win $250k, here’s a $3700 check, don’t tell anyone because this letter has your sekret numbers! Don’t cash the check until you’ve paid the “taxes” by two separate Money Grams, each of which is just slightly below UK1000 – by US Mail. And I hate the fuck out of someone who will try to scam people. Hopefully, I can set the Feds on them without blowback.
You’ll be lucky if they file a report.
Yup. I got, “thanks for telling us. we’ll call you if anything turns up.”
Me:”So… do you want the letter and the check?”
Them:”Hold on to it, but we’ve got what we need over the phone for right now.”
When I am God-Emperor, things will be different. Breaking fraud will be the promotion path in my peace officer corps.
Just as I expected. No report was filed. No notes were taken. In twenty minutes you could call back and they will have completely forgotten your previous call.
They don’t care.
Hope you don’t own a dog.
We had a scammer call somebody at the hospital, claiming to be from the FBI and doing an investigation. Their phone number checked out as being in downtown DC, but the whole thing smelled hinky.
I called ’em back, told ’em they’d have to deal with me. They said they would check out my bona fides, and never called back.
I declined to call the feds on them. I figured it was pointless.
It is pointless.
My ex was being scammed by “Detective Smith of the FBI”, and the real FBI was quite bored as they took down the information. Actually, I got the distinct impression that the duty agent was actually pretending to take down information while “uh huh”ing me. They clearly didn’t give a shit, and who can blame them, more work for no pay-off.
Actually, I got the distinct impression that the duty agent was actually pretending to take down information while “uh huh”ing me.
That’s been my experience with law enforcement. They don’t give a shit unless there’s something they can legally steal.
Deposit the check in an enemy’s bank account.
If the Police need your bank account number to investigate it may be one of those fake police departments.
In links news – hopefully this wasn’t posted last night – NHL player arrested for dressing as teletubby, and blowing a .30 BAC.
That is choice. Please God let him have been carrying Tinky-Winky’s handbag too
Police say the 20-year-old Grand Rapids Griffins center from St. Catharines, Ontario, was wearing the costume of a purple Teletubby known as Tinky Winky during the stop.
Insert SLD about the iniquity of the 21-year-old drinking age.
SLD s/b “DUI is a victimless crime”, IMO.
Agreed.
Let he who is without sin Tinky the first Winky.
This article should have had the mug shot, assuming it’s of the guy still in costume.
lol, that jsut sounds silly dude. I mean like seriously.

The quality of many incoming teachers is such that they conspire with an insider to cheat their way to a certification.
When incoming “teachers” require greasing the wheels just to get a job, it should be a sign that our educational system is not in need of yet more teachers. If the population needed more teachers, we wouldn’t have to be forced to accept education college fluffs who cheated their way in.
Normally you don’t see that kind of hustle in a guidance counselor.
I have dated, over the last 4-5 years, several graduates of the FSU Ed school who claimed to have done well. I was appalled at their lack of education. I mean, being generous, perhaps their program focused entirely on pedegoguery, because it sure didn’t include literature, history, math, or science.
Ed majors are well-meaning half the time but dumb almost always.
But what would the college experience have been without well meaning but dumb girls?
“pedagoguery”: is that a cross between pedagogy and demagoguery?
I liked it.
Dammit, Ted, I’m an engineer not a spelling major!
Are you saying that women who date you are dumb? Maybe the school isn’t the reason…
The smart ones don’t tend to stay in Tallahassee. If I weren’t chained to an underwater house, I would probably follow them.
The vast majority of College of Ed classes are pedagogy and administrative. Where I did my undergrad, an education major didn’t need but 4 upper level classes in their field. English Ed majors only needed 4 English lit classes, math ed only needed 4 upper level math classes, etc. Majors in the fields proper, math, english, etc needed 12 upper level classes in their field to graduate.
How universities aren’t downright embarrassed by their colleges of ed is downright disgusting. It is by far the fluff program at every university.
Money makers. Their graduates are going to be union members, they don’t have to be good at anything, they just have to show up.
We are embarrassed, but they rake in lots of govt grant money so we keep them around.
Some states require high school teachers to do a major in the field they are going to teach. We tried that a while back and gave up because no one who can actually complete a math major wants to teach, and nobody who wants to teach can complete a math major (with a few exceptions, who usually don’t stay in teaching long).
Did anyone mention Moynihan’s epic re-smackdown of Oliver Stone and his BFF commie professor yet?

Jesus! This is so sad.
North korea…. what an awesome place.
Were their really 300 comments and no one linked to the Mr. Show skit about blowing up the moon?
pathetic.
Id do it myself, but then you’d never learn…

We’re spending all this money, millions of dollars, to blow up the moon, when there are so many things here on Earth to blow up … Mount Everest, the North Pole, et cetera. We’re earthlings, let’s blow up Earth things!
Researchers can predict if college freshman intend to become sexually active based solely on content they post to Facebook.
In a study to be published January in the Journal of Sex Research, the team led by assistant professor Megan Moreno from the University of Wisconsin?Madison found that sexual references and revealing photographs posted to Facebook by 18-year-old college freshmen were not associated with the students’ sexual experience. However, the sexual content was associated with an increased likelihood of initiating sexual activity.
It’s a good thing we have these researchers around. Hopefully they’ll publish a list so parents can properly monitor and worry.
Wait, I can infer from the fact that someone is a college freshman that they either currently are or intend to become sexually active at some point in the very near future, like as soon as they can find someone who’ll say yes/ask them (depending on their personal level of initiative/aggression)
Can someone give me a few hundred grand for my results now?
he was found to have acted ‘within policy’.Notice how his buddies do absolutely nothing.
