A.M. Links: NYC Wants a Post-Sandy Bailout, Morsi Has Obama Quite Annoyed, Gun Sales Rise as Crime Plummets
-
Having already taken in $9.2 billion from private insurerers and FEMA to pay for Sandy damage, New York City wants the feds to cough up another $9.8 billion. Because taxpayers in Iowa and Arizona should definitely pick up the tab for the city's mess.
- Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's seizure of vast power in his country apparently has the Obama administration concerned. Watch your step, Morsi, or drones will take out wedding receptions and picnics all over the place.
- The online prediction market Intrade is pulling out of the U.S. because regulators have left it no path for functioning legally.
- The first two prison sentences have been handed down in the Fast and Furious gun-running debacle — and no, they weren't given to Justice Department officials or BATF agents,
- Bradley Manning, the source of a treasure trove of American documents published by WikiLeaks, will speak publicly in court for the first time since his arrest.
- As gun ownership has risen in Virginia, the crime rate has dropped. One wonders if there is a connection.
- California SEIU member Mariam Noujaim spent $18K of her own money to finally gain access to her union's books. She's due to get a peek today.

The first two prison sentences have been handed down in the Fast and Furious gun-running debacle...
Scandal = resolved.

Not sure who Julianne Hough is, but I wouldn't kick her out of bed.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvs.....crest.html
Julianne Hough
I knew who she was but I guess I can see how not everyone would.
I didn't say I was interested in who she is.
She was one of the "pro" dancers on Dancing with the Stars when it started, and then she turned country singer.
or better yet, what Ted S said.
Ironically, becoming more famous than some of the "Stars".
I thought Seacrest is gay?
Oh god. It's starting.
Can't be bothered to wait for the video to download. What was the point, exactly?
If gay marriage isn't legalized, gay men will start poaching our girlfriends. The video then goes on to state why they will have absolutely no trouble doing so.
And this is supposed to be humor why, exactly?
Because most hu-mans find it life-affirming observe the destruction of facsimiles of their opponents, made of straw.
There was an amusing response by "straight men" begging gay men to go through with it because they didn't want to actually marry their girlfriends anyway.
Yeah, now that I think about it, you all can do the work and we can been kept around as stallions.
been s/b "be"
Awww, Ted thinks it's actually supposed to be a funny ha-ha joke.
IMHO, it's worth it to wait. Well done and amusing. The point, however, is that gays that are infinitely better husbands for girls.
And they're better typists, too.
Mmmm, gurl, dat azz.

It better not be the sparkly variety.
I don't worry about modern vampires, they are too busy being moody teenagers to bite anyone.
FTFY.
Outlaw close talking!
They saw what happened to those scientists in Italy, and figured you might as well warn for everything!
Wouldn't want to create the false impression that there is no vampire threat at all.
What a backward place. I mean, what century are they living in, seriously? Who still mills their own flour?
Hipsters?
Ahem. Cough. Scratch. Looks away.
Kindly turn your head when you cough.
Lets leave the turn-your-head-and-coughery to Groovus, MD.
Charlize Theron cut off all her hair!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvs.....-Town.html
I guess she's an Indianapolis Colts fan too.
I get the solidarity and all, but damn, bald women just don't do it for me, even with cheerleader bodies. Girls with boy haircuts are a waste too. Nice hair can be one of the most alluring features of a woman, especially if she isn't the curviest specimen.
Better this than the pink ribbon bullies.
Hair is a really important factor for me.
She is not aging well for a former 10.

Buttplug is just wrong about everything, isn't he?
You're not allowed to criticize an African-American lady's hair.
Ooh, I see what you did there!
Liz Hurley's still got it!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvs.....onour.html
Liz Hurley still has Charlize Theron's hair?!?
No, that's probably in the possession of a... uh... collector.
Hey! That...collector...is a well-meaning chap! Always quiet, keeps to himself, keeps his lawn mowed, never any trouble...
You have a lawn in the UKR? Do tell.
Groovus' new home
I thought he was trading medical services for rooming privileges at the Ukranian School for Wayward Girls.
I guess he needs lot of room for all the hot Ukranian wimmins he keeps talking about.
I went to L'viv and a nearby military training area in 2003 - there were plenty of whiplash inducing, hot UKR wimmins around!
Real Life OO-Krah-ee-an Vimminz
To be fair, wimminz here are either spectacular or piteously butt ugly. There is no happy medium or in-between. Most are pretty spectacular.

So L'viv-ly, I had to post it twice. Damn Moose and Sqvirrel!
Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out, they leave the West behind...

The online prediction market Intrade is pulling out of the U.S. because regulators have left it no path for functioning legally.
Shriek will have to find someplace else to waste his money.
They were stepping on the CFTC's area of oil and gold futures trading.
This really pisses me off. Rather than drop those areas they decided to just say fuck off to US clients.
There is more to this I am sure.
Yes, The Anointed One nuked a market and you're going to find a way to blame the market.
Statist apologist issues apologies. News at 11.
The dispute goes back to 2005.
http://www.marketwatch.com/sto.....2012-11-26
Nice try though.
This is a philosophical difference. Intrade did not think they were in the futures market.
Behold, the call of the Wild Shriek!
BOOOOOSH! BOOOOOSH!
If the President wanted to reign in his CFTC, he could have done so. Sorry The Anointed One let you down.
The futures market is a form of mathematical prognostication, with a payout if you are correct.
How is that different from what Intrade is doing, you imbecile?
In futures markets you can trade on margin, and you can require delivery of the underlying commodity.
Those are pretty major differences, IMO.
Fair enough. -)
Which means they did it today. Just now. And yet, you refuse to hold the Chief Executive accountable.
Why are you guys arguing with someone who is utterly bonkers and has only the most tenuous connection with reality?
You do realize that nothing you say will ever make it through his reality distortion field. It's a complete waste of time.
You have to argue the argument, not the "man".
You have to argue the argument, not the "man".
Uh, you kind of are arguing the man since you're bringing up shrike's prior record of support of BO. Not that he doesn't deserve it.
To a certain extent it does require trying to hold an arguer consistent with his previous positions.
C'mon, Randian - it is not like O! can tell the DoJ what to do or not.
So I take it you side with MF Global against its traders.
MF Global should not be pestered with regulations either.
I have not the slightest idea who MF Global is, but if they were participants in out-and-out fraud, that's not a regulatory issue, it's a criminal one.
InTrade was making honest money. Can you say the same thing about this MF place? I suspect you cannot.
MFG invested client capital in Euro-bonds and could not pay its trades. They were incompetent but honest.
BTW, I side with Intrade. Should Obama step in on such an issue for a tiny Irish company in light of all the failed investment banks? Probably from the LP POV only.
That will all come out in the court documents, I guess.
Regardless, InTrade hadn't lost any money, so your red herring is, well, a red herring.
President Obama killed a market, and you continue to worship at his shrine.
Neeedz moar christfag! and Record. Corporate. Profitsses.
Should Obama step in on such an issue for a tiny Irish company in light of all the failed investment banks?
The tiny Irish company you were treating as Nostradamus reborn all summer long?
Yeah, BO doesn't have time to step in to keep his underlings from crushing an innocent party. He might have to only play 9 holes today if he bothers with that.
MF Global should not be pestered with regulations either.
Apparently, it wasn't. Your point?
We missed you in the California thread, yesterday, Shriek. The "classical liberal" electorate in California thinks you should need to government's permission to wash bird shit off of a rock.
Neeedz moar christfag! and Record. Corporate. Profitsses.
This really pisses me off. Rather than drop those areas they decided to just say fuck off to US clients.
Yes, it is all their fault.
TL;DR - STOP RESISTING!
Not everyone is as talented at bending to the government's arbitrary rules as you are. You should teach a class on kneeling to your betters. Nobody genuflects correctly these days.
Indeed. The Catholics and Muslims really are slacking these days.
No coincidence that both stressed the need to kneel.
Neeedz moar christfag! and Record. Corporate. Profitsses.
Why do you hate freedom?
He said, while derpsplaining that Obama should do nothing to correct the wrongs His Own Executive Branch inflicted:
So the real question is why do YOU hate freedom?
Apparently shrike only cares about *big* businesses that get hit with regulatory threats. Small businesses can go pound sand.
I'll wait while you dig up a citation proving your accusation. Until then...
Neeedz moar Christfag! and Record. Corporate. Profitsses.
As gun ownership has risen in Virginia, the crime rate has dropped. One wonders if there is a connection.
Yeah, soft on crime Virginia needs to criminalize that gun ownership. State prisons don't fill themselves.
State prisons don't fill themselves.
Think of those hard workin' prison guards and their union, feedin' their families! They're workin' in some of America's roughest neighbourhoods, doin' God's work!
/joe
Windows, gentlemen, must be broken. Holes must be dug and filled.
Nuke Chicago. Think of the stimulus value!
We should also hit LA and NYC while we're at it. The unemployment rate would drop to like 2%.
Always with the nukes for Chicago - sure, I live upwind, but could we not just have another Great Chicago Fire instead? You know, pure cleansing fire?
Do union by-laws allow them to guard empty cells?
Also, if they are prison guards, couldn't they like guard it from invasion instead of escape? I bet that would require lots of new training programs and conferences. Probably in Vegas and Hawaii!
Three felonies a day, man!
State prisons don't fill themselves.
They sure don't. Thanks to the police unions refusal to sign-off on sentient prisons.
That's what I'm looking forward to the most about the singularity.
The online prediction market Intrade is pulling out of the U.S. because regulators have left it no path for functioning legally.
And the U.S. will remind Intrade that pulling out does not always keep you out of trouble.
Hopefully the Irish will remind us that they're really good at the kind of war that we suck at fighting.
A drinking war?
Well it does involve lots of cocktails.
You mean those crafty wars of subterfuge usually involving a carefully placed surprise that goes "BOOM!"?
Even there, frankly, they're more Wile E. Coyote than anything else.
ACME is an Irish company????
Have you seen the stuff they sell? It must be either Irish or Russian.
You mean like this?
The Irish are good at something?
Could have fooled, well everyone.
Careful, they may have their national rugby team beat you with whisky bottles and sacks of potatoes.
Actually the one thing the Celts (all of em, Irish, Scots, Welsh, Bretons, etc.) were really good at was war.
The downside to it was that they liked it so much they couldn't stop from fighting with each other long enough to deal with their enemies.
The Scots good at war, sure. They held off English conquest for centuries and were eventually defeated through land and title grants to the clan chieftains. Basically, they were bought out.
But the Irish? It took how many years for Cromwell to invade, occupy, and subdue Ireland? The Easter Rising was crushed in a week. The war for independence was militarily a wash and was only successful strategically because the British were war weary and spent from WWI, and because the British public had little enthusiasm for maintaining Ireland as it was considered by most to be a vampire welfare state anyway.
Though my previous post was mostly in jest.
And the U.S. will remind Intrade that pulling out does not always keep you out of trouble.
They don't have sex ed in Ireland?
Ireland's heavily Catholic.
California SEIU member Mariam Noujaim spent $18K of her own money to finally gain access to her union's books.
Will she have trouble turning the pages with broken kneecaps? Let's watch.
She shouldn't. You don't need your kneecaps to turn a page.
I won't be convinced of that until Bob Seger weighs in.
I don't think they'll use silver bullets.
No, they'll use heavy objects...like, say, a rock.
Pete Seeger?
I'd like to know what Bob Seger thinks myself.
It appears he thinks selling his music for commercials is easier than working for a living.
Well, wouldn't you?
Seems sound.
Works for that pseudo-paedophile Pete Townsend. He even sells his music for teevee themes. Seems to make a solid buck doing it, too.
Well, to be fair, his fists are rather busy.
A friend of mine, a card carrying TEAM BLUE cheerleader, worked for the SEIU a couple years ago and was blown away by just how corrupt the place is.
Even after being canned for finding even more corrupt behavior, her TEAM membership remains in good standing. The corruption and mendacity is just a massive coincidence.
My mom was a social worker for a bit (sociology degree from Women's College of the UNC in the late 50s), and left it to be a freaking secretary because she said she could only count on one hand all the people she dealt with who were honestly down-on-their-luck and not simply milking the system for handouts.
Given all that, I think it's telling that her most hated job ever was actually a short stint she had doing administrative work at the National Education Association HQ in DC. She said she has never in her life dealt with such despicable, nasty people.
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's seizure of vast power in his country apparently has the Obama administration concerned.
Is there an aspect of the Arab Spring that they were even close to being ahead of?
Reason doesn't exactly sit in a great place to be too critical. Holy smokea, did some of the contributors here say some unbelievably stupid shit before everything hit the fan (like everyone with a brain knew was going to happen).
Maybe, but it's obvious to anyone that the Egyptian military actually runs the country. When they didn't step in to stop the protestors last year, Mubarak was finished, and they'll allow Morsi to stay in power only as long as it's convenient for them.
Wild over-optimism? Self congratulations?
they excelled in those.
Yesterdays presser was lulzy. Jay Carney absolutely would not say that the administration was critical of Morsi, had condemned his seizure of power, nope, just that they were "concerned".
Morsi sized up the weak sisters at the administration perfectly. He did them a bogus favor by "brokering" a "cease-fire" in Gaza, and bought himself a get out of jail free card for seizing absolute power.
Fuck it. This is what the American people want, so this is what they get.
And Good and Hard(tm), they will get.
The American people would have to have a vague inkling of Middle Eastern history to get the shit that goes on there, and they can't even be bothered to learn their own.
All you need to know about the Middle East can be gleaned from reading The Jewish War.
Short version: it's always been a madhouse.
RomneyWouldHaveDoneItToo!?
But Romney would have done it too. Or something.
So cynical, RC. I like that in a person.
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's seizure of vast power in his country apparently has the Obama administration concerned.
How much is it going to cost the American taxpayer to get him to ease up? Or to arm the next Arab Spring?
If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
Hasn't stopped your average legislator, and those motherfuckers know we're broke...
So they spend and simply don't ask.
"But we have CHECKS left in the register!"
Next Arab Spring? No-no-no, this is the Arab Winter of Discontent.

All summer in a day.
Or rocket summer.
Today is Choose Your Own Bradbury Reference Day.
Morsi's seizure of vast power in his country apparently has the Obama administration concerned.
Oh, allow me:
1) "STYLE SWIPER!!"
2) "Come on, Mohammed, we agreed to do it *together*!"
Dear Miriam -
I think it's Proverbs for Paranoids #5:
If they can get you asking the wrong question, it doesn't matter what the answers are.
You can't expect NYC to shift resources from vital programs like Stop and Frisk or rent control enforcement to esoteric stuff like flood remediation. That would be crazy.
Of course not, Brooksie. Don't be silly. Think of the food deserts, "health concerns" like sodee pop, and other Concern Scourges that clearly take precedence.
There are unions to think of here, you heartless monster. Teachers, Police and Firemen(tm) gotta eat too!
What do people believe that the money should have gone to flood gates and improved infrastructure. Surely you jest.
Because taxpayers in Iowa and Arizona should definitely pick up the tab for the city's mess.
The Big Apple will totally kick in the next time a tornado or whatever they have in flyover country destroys sparcely populated regions.
Not sure what Arizona gets, but Iowa does get to grow lots of corn thanks to New Yorkers.
New Yorkers don't drive.
Or drink soda. Nevermind then, still early!
But they do like to tell other people how to do both. Very forcefully.
And Charlie don't surf.
Get Low acoustic cover. You might want to use headphones...
Do all coffee shops have the same fucking decor? Is it a government regulation or something?
Don't give them any ideas.
I'm sure it's a required course for your interior decorator license.
Good music for those who don't like metal
I always think of classical as the metal of the era.
Aaaah, so you're that high-school music teacher.
I am sure that high-school music teacher would have loved THIS
I prefer the Gene Tierney version. At least she's nice to look at.
Damit Ted S., I almost choked on my coffee. Luckily it went through my nose.
That looked like an amalgam of the worst stereotypes about metal.
Is This better?
You're in the Temple of Set, aren't you?
You're in the Temple of Set, aren't you?
No, I had to actually look it up. But I am a huge fan of Maat.
Metal is a self-parodying genre, so the worst stereotypes are also the best archetypes. Sheesh.
So metal was the first ironic music genre?
Oh ho ho. I kill me.
Right on! Bach FTW!
Classical metal

A onetime fee might be cheaper than an ongoing tax exemption or something.
The cruise ships still lose. They have to go to Houston.

That's been a freaking disaster from the word go.
OT: I (bought and) read Tucille's book High Desert BBQ this weekend and liked it. Fun characters and fast moving story...but why so many chapters? 😉
So you have a reasonable place to stop while reading it on the toilet?
hah! kindles are decidedly less, um, suited to the porcelain reading room than paper though.
Ding!! I love books with short chapters just for this reason, And also reading in the bathtub.
Reading in the bathtub is one of the great joys of life. Of course to do it properly as the water cools, you need to be adept at turning the hot water on and off with your toes so as not to interrupt the reading.
I really think there is some sort of optimum chapter size.
Too short or too long really screws up the flow.
Ask for a government grant to fund a study.

Stephen Roach was on Bloomberg this morning. He said explicitly Bernanke's holding interest rates at zero has obscured the cost of risk, and rates should rise.
Stephen Roach has my endorsement for Treasury Secretary.

Oh god. Please tell me a psychotically rampaging Wesley Crusher features heavily in the rest of that piece?
Seriously, I used to TRY and make people ill with my writing, and I can't even come CLOSE to what that's done to me.
Well once I did, but it was a girl, and they're easy to make sick. Except Rachel Maddow, who has the constitution of a superhero. /Swoon

Kinky.
I thought your slashfic was disgusting. Wait... Did you write this and submit it?
No. I admit to being jealous. This is a fever dream of delusional supposition and cult of personality worship... Rimbaud meets L. Ron Hubbard.
Have they done one of these for Ryan Gosling? Because that by definition will have to be the worst.
Also... what is up with lesbians dating women who look like men, but with vaginas? Does not compute for me.
Domestic violence is more fun when you have a chance at winning the fight.
Fair point. Don't lesbians have an insanely high rate of domestic violence?
I don't know about insanely high, but it is high. Anecdotally, all the lesbians I know drink a LOT. So I can only imagine the drunken rage fights that happen between two people of similar size.
Anecdotally, this has been my observation as well.
And dyke fights are entertaining. It's like a drunken frat girl fight between girls who know how to throw a proper punch.
Should have been sorority girl, but I think y'all get the point.
What the hell?
The FBI goes into a house and opens fire. Does not elaborate as to why they were there or what their warrant was for.
Nobody in the house even owns a weapon yet they somehow used the "she's got a gun" defense and apparently will get away with it.

Followed by, "she could be a mass murdering ninja".
And "she could be a flesh eating zombie".

Well played, Randian. Well played.

Maybe he could help that business by repealing the ridiculous Mattel's Law.
Well, they say "stick with what you know."
Campaigning has always been more his thing than, y'know, actually governing.
Elizabeth Hasselbeck waxes eloquently about something:
'I think it's disgusting, first of all. But also, it seems like verbal rape to me. And I think at some point there's gotta be a point where Twitter should ban anyone who writes anything forever on there and you should identify yourself.'
That's "verbal rape"? Saying you're going to fart on someone while they go down on you?
What the fuck is the controversy? It was two children making stupid jokes on Twitter.
It's because Chris Brown and whoever the woman is are, uh, "role models" or something.
California SEIU member Mariam Noujaim spent $18K of her own money to finally gain access to her union's books.
She should have just bribed one of the accountants in the treasurer's office.
World's Funniest Human doesn't go to the gym any longer but she wants you to know she was brave back when she did go to the gym. Because fat.
I was kidding about the pining for a Lindy West exposition about being the brave little choo-choo. You have my aneurism on your head now.
I thought a commenter there was going to successfully use Jezebel's own privilege arguments against her:
But then the would-be hero takes a turn for heel:
That's been tried on them before. Just as non-white people can't be racist; fat people can't be judgmental about looks. If you really pin them down, they'll mumble something about everyone being different and everyone should be accepted, but they will talk about thin women like they are dogs that should be put down most of the time.
If you really pin them down...
then you are a bigger person than they are.
This is true. I've been thin all my life and never NEVER dared to make a comment about fat peoples' weight to them, but they have no shame about endlessly commenting on my weight. For the record, fat cows need to shut the fuck up.
Can someone just give her a sitcom so it can fail miserably and Jezebel can be mystified by that fact?
I think Melissa McCarthy already has the "Unfunny Landwhale" niche taken care of.
King County, WA taxpayers will be forced to pay an additional $1.4M in a settlement because their Sheriff's Dept engaged in a deliberate coverup to keep evidence away from plaintiffs as well as federal investigators in an excessive force complaint/case that came after officers smashed an innocent man's head into a concrete wall and gave him permanent brain damage. Taxpayers had previously been forced to pay the man's family $10M already.
No officers were ever charged in the incident.
Lights the Dunphy signal
But, but, but...people are more free in Washington.* He told us so.
*Of course, that means cops are also more free to cover up their criminal activities when they should be criminally prosecuted but instead end up having the taxpayers pay for their malfeasance.
Washington state is a shithole where there are two different forms of justice that are wholly dependent on what your job is. It's worse than California in many respects.
The king's men have always been held to a different standard than the peasants.
I start to get outraged over these taxpayer funded settlements, but it seems like the taxpayers in those places never really give a shit.
Well, if they complain, they'll get a beatdown courtesy of the cops consequence-free. That's a pretty good reason to pay up and keep their mouths shut.
But according to Dunphy, Washington has all kinds of constitutional protections and good cops. I just don't know who to believe...
Your own eyes is a good starting point.
Well, according to dunphy he's also doing more for libertarianism than the rest of us are.
Study: Women Porn Stars have higher self esteem and are more religious than other women.
http://houston.cbslocal.com/20.....her-women/
Screaming, "Oh God!" While faking an orgasm counts as praying, right?
Wait, wait, wait....wait. They're faking?
I get the self esteem part. They're hot, make good money, and know that tons of guys want them. The more religious seems odd.
Probably helps with the self esteem too. Feeling right spiritually probably helps compensate for the guilt about being a whore by another name (NTTAWWT).
Actually, a hell of a lot of them are straight up whores too. More than a few got their start as prostitutes, and some see porn as a form of advertising, turning them from $200/hour hookers into $5,000/night hookers. Others moonlight as hookers/strippers.
More than a few have retired into whoredom once they were no longer thin, young, or attractive enough to get mainstream porn deals.
Self-defeating, hypocritical religiosity never amazes me.
Whores don't have self-esteem? Maybe you should tell that to Maggie McNeill.
I'm confused as to where exactly this semi-question came from. I wasn't commenting on self-esteem, I was commenting on the fact that many porn stars are more than just whores by proxy.
I suppose it depends on the whore.
milf porn isn't mainstream?
Still requires thin and attractive.
You don't get out much.
Or acutally the opposite of that.
Hey, Jesus was a friend to prostitutes. Also, tax collectors, sadly.
Religious, in the this context, would imply consistency. As in, "She religiously has sex with Thor Cockhammer* in the series Tales from Behind the Hard Catalogue.
*I have it on good authority that this is SugarFree's stage name. The Naughty Librarian thing is a front.
Worshiping me is all the religion whose dirty girls need.
The more religious seems odd.
That would explain the "Oh God! Oh God!"
Wasn't ancient Egypt's religion a sex cult?
Babylon. Ishtar had temple hookers.
This seems, um, appropriate. AUDIO & VIDEO NSFW.
The study also found that women working in porn tried more drugs, had their first sexual experience at a younger age and had more sexual partners than those in the sample group.
All 3 points are "duh", but was there really even a need to mention the bolded one?
Maybe someone thought porn stars usually just made a ton of films with the same partner over and over again?
"The study was conducted by Rresearchers [sic] from Texas Woman's University, Shippensburg University and Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation."
That last institution seems to be linked to the industry being investigated.
Anyway, what does the study mean by "religion" and "spirituality"? And when they say porn stars don't have more sexual partners than non-porn stars, are they factoring in the sex partners they have in front of the camera?
Wait, the study said they had *more* sex partners? Well, gosh, I thought they were trying to correct *all* the negative stereotypes of porn stars.
Plus the extra drug use could be linked to some religion - like Rastafarianism for instance.
You distract yourself with the pancake batter
Gurgle gurgle gurgle.
Sheriff's Dept engaged in a deliberate coverup to keep evidence away from plaintiffs as well as federal investigators
The ONLY appropriate response to this is criminal prosecution of every public official who participated.
But Brooksie, they weren't specifically trained NOT to coverup their criminal behavior. Therefore...retraining!!!!
Something actually insightful and worthwhile from Gawker:
Hating Chris Brown Isn't Racist Until You Make It Racist
Luckily this logic does not apply to Obama.
All Chris Brown gets from me is pity that he can't rise above. Kanye, however, if hating him is wrong then I just can't even.
Watch What Warren Buffett Does, Not What He Says
Yeah, we tore this up yesterday. Buffett is always talking his book. And he is a notable investor in tax-free muni bonds, so his blather about how no investor considers after-tax return is so much weapons-grade bullshit.
Noted? As in barely at all?
Berkshire is stuffed with blue chip companies.
He's been exiting the muni bond market, but he has invested heavily in it in the past. There is no reason to buy a muni bond unless you are looking at after-tax return, which he is now telling us no investor would ever do. Well, except him, apparently.
What, no christfag!! or Recod. Corporate. Profitsses?? Lazy troll is lazy.
And it's way past time for some reporter to make his bones by ambushing Buffet on his bullshit.
Except that we don't have reporters anymore, we have neutered poodles calling themselves journalists.
You attack Buffett, you're not getting a job with any media outlet except Fox News in the future.
On a forum last night, I ran into another wonderful instance of internet liberals saying "racism means a societal level system that disadvantages a group". Apparently if you say that racism means treating someone different because of their race you are "simplifying a complex concept to it's dictionary definition".... Because using words with their dictionary definition is a stretch, isn't it, Obama?
In "his" column, Buffett referred to the securities business in the fifties and sixties, but he failed to mention how much of the business was comprised of explicit tax shelters.
If capital gains rates were going to go from 15% to 39%, then yeah, I'd take that into consideration. Not to mention the effect that uncertainty about taxes might have on the investment itself or the fact that with higher taxes, there won't be as much money to invest in the first place.
Its simple math. If your after-tax return is reduced by 25%, your going to require less risk because your return is less.
They were splooging all over Buffett on the Today show this morning. What a despicable man.
Even a 2% reduction can make the difference, if the investment is on the risk/reward borderline, or it's a very safe investment with a relatively low return.
And dont forget situations where a gain can push you just over some line that causes a significant tax increase. Like AMT limits, or the 2M bbl limit for brewers.
That latter one is expecially harsh, as the federal excise tax on the 1,999,999th barrel and the 2,000,001st barrel is $18. The tax on the 2,000,000th barrel is $660,018.
Wow. You've got to have a serious pent-up demand to cross that threshold.
Yep, see Yuengling and Ohio.
They exploded across Ohio like the buckeyes were some porn starlet (mixing threads here).
Guess what line they crossed in the process?
Totally worth it to them, though. We love that stuff here.
Totally worth it to them, though. We love that stuff here.
Showing, once again, that Buckeyes have no taste.
Went from just short of 2 million to like 2.3?
Here are some numbers for Yuengling, last 5 years:
2007 1,715,000 bbls
2008 1,800,000
2009 2,026,000
2010 2,153,784
2011 2,523,000
That looks like they foolishly snuck across the line in 09 and 10, before exploding in 11 in Ohio.
But, that is total self-reported number, and, Im sure, includes untaxed bbls, so I bet the taxed bbls were just below 2M in those two years.
Then, they couldnt avoid it anymore and made the big push into Ohio in 2011.
Another approaching the line, Boston Beer/Sam Adams:
2007 1,758,000
2008 1,877,000
2009 1,871,000
2010 1,984,000
2011 2,096,000
Same applies to them, I bet they were under 2M in taxable bbls in 2011. Boston Beer Co has been lobbying hard to get the law changed (as has Yuengling), the Senators from PA and MA are on board with raising that limit to 6M.
Because they are national, I dont know if they have any way to leap up a few 100k in a single year. I guess I could look at their quarterly financials to see how this year is going, since they are a public company.
Ignore that chart for Boston Beer Co.
That is beer only, when you include other malt beverages (which for tax purposes, are the same), they were over 2.4M for 2011, up from 2.1M in 2010.
Thats a lot of Twisted Tea.
Boston Beer makes Twisted Tea? Never knew that.
What would make some of the barrels untaxable?
Boston Beer makes Twisted Tea?
They arent proud of it.
What would make some of the barrels untaxable?
Export would be the biggest reason.
Also for use as supplies on vessels/aircraft. Not sure on the details of that one exactly.
It has never come up on any of the 4-5 tours I've done of their Boston brewery.
It has never come up on any of the 4-5 tours I've done of their Boston brewery.
From their wikipedia page:
The Boston Beer Company also produces Twisted Tea hard iced tea and HardCore hard apple cider, which are intentionally separate from the Samuel Adams brand.
Probably a smart business decision.
Mumsie loves that stuff.
How did we get mass distribution of Yuengling in North Carolina a decade before Ohio did? Not bad for an adjunct lager, but I can't drink any company's lite product unless it's in a shandy these days.
How did we get mass distribution of Yuengling in North Carolina a decade before Ohio did?
They have a brewery in Florida in addition to the one in PA. I think that is the answer for anyone in the south.
they'll mumble something about everyone being different and everyone should be accepted
But you can hardly be blamed if you wouldn't want your sister to marry one.
you are "simplifying a complex concept to it's dictionary definition"
Definitions are intrinsically paternalistic!
I even said that we can talk about systematic advantages or whether something like affirmative action is a good thing or not, but don't say it's not racist. It is. It's treating people differently based on their race.
Teens pick wrong house to rob
I'm generally in favor of people who break into houses getting shot, but I think this guy went too far. But it is good for people to see that if you do shit like that, you might end up dead.
I concur entirely. The Daily Fail article states upfront that the kids broke into a man's house and then promptly forgot that fact for the rest of the article. Probably because of guns.
Well, duh. Only the king's men are important enough to be allowed to arm and defend themselves.
Probably because the kid was shot when he was no longer a threat? Murder tends to make people forget about breaking and entering.
Probably because the kid was shot when he was no longer a threat?
Yeah! Who does this guy think he is? A cop?
but I think this guy went too far
Executing them is too far? You don't say.
I like his style.
His presentation could use a little work, though.
He needs a little coaching up on how to present a statement.
He should have done it Gangnam Style!
The man's bloodthirstiness disturbs me.
I think that the state is well within their rights to charge him.
The man's bloodthirstiness disturbs me.
Bingo.
Evidently, part of getting your H&R man card is cheering the execution of incapacitated teenagers.
To be completely fair, this guy did go over the line with his anchor shots.
However, you break into somebody's house, I'm not going to complain if you wind up dead. The full story hints at something other than a couple of All-American teenagers out on a lark. The shooter had been burglarized eight (8!) times, etc. The odds that these two hadn't robbed him before strike me as pretty low.
And the U.S. will remind Intrade that pulling out does not always keep you out of trouble.
That's why we have judges and juries and trials and stuff, rather than summary execution.
Meant to quote The full story hints at something other than a couple of All-American teenagers out on a lark.
RC, I don't have any problem with castle doctrine. And I agree, that anyone breaking into someone's house shouldn't be surprised if they end up dead. And I RTFA'd, so I'm aware of the scenario in operation.
That said, the first 1 or 2 placed shots in any situation, even here, is easily claimed as self-defense. If they're clearly armed (and it's not clear if these 2 were), go to town and put them down. But, once they're down and no longer any kind of threat, that pretty much ends it. Anything after that is pretty much murder.
This guy went way beyond even that standard and should be hung by his balls in the town square.
What amazes me is all the people in here who are against the death penalty for convicted murderers, but think it's a good thing for some burglars to get shot.
As I see it, the death penalty is state-sanctioned revenge (studies have shown that the deterrent effect is negligible), and shooting a burlar is defense of one's property.
Big difference
The only person guaranteed to be deterred by the death penalty is the person being executed.
Which is the point.
There are some crimes sufficiently heinous that justice demands the death of the criminal.
The online prediction market Intrade is pulling out of the U.S. because regulators have left it no path for functioning legally.
The thug-state sociopaths continue their buttinski war against on-line gambling.
Why the fuck not? When a natural disaster occurs in Iowa, they will be happy to have the help from much richer states like New York.
The net flow of "disaster relief" money has to be from flyover country to the coasts, especially the east and gulf coasts.
Much better if the heightened risk of living on the coasts was funded through insurance. That way, people could evaluate the risk, and the people taking the risk could fund it themselves.
Shorter Tony: might makes right.
I suppose that two wrongs make a right in your book?
The natural disasters that occur in flyover country are waaaaaaaaaaay less expensive than those that occur on the coasts. The 1993 floods in the Midwest were the most expensive natural disaster ever in that region, and caused $21B in damage. NYC is matching that all by itself.
Let's call it even for the subsidy of flyover states by the rich coastal states for everything else.
How bout we end the subsidies going both ways by lowering spending and cutting taxes.
How about we stop worrying and realize the world is a complex place?
Shorter Tony: might makes right.
Amazing how the complexity disappears when we're talking about someone who wants the govt to pay for her contraceptives. Then it's a matter of libertarians/conservatives forcing her to get pregnant if they don't support it.
Fuck off, sock puppet.
'Two And A Half Men' Star Angus T. Jones Calls Show 'Filth'
"If you watch 'Two and a Half Men,' please stop watching 'Two and a Half Men.' I'm on 'Two and a Half Men' and I don't want to be on it."

Sounds to me like he's doing the flip-side of the Charlie Sheen bit. Good luck with that.
He has better taste than most of America. Now get your ass over to Community to replace Pierce for Season 5.
He started work on the show when he was a minor. There's always the risk that if you hire a child for your lowbrow sex comedy, then as he matures he'll decide it's gross.
Tell that to all of the Huffpotards.
Not one of them on the message boards recognizes that he started shooting for the poopy show at age 9 or 10.
Facts never get in the way of emotions.
Maybe he's trying to avoid the Jake Lloyd/Emmanuel Lewis club.
They were splooging all over Buffett on the Today show this morning.
They said he was coming up when I flipped over to Morning Joke. I didn't have the stomach to watch.
He has plenty of money. Now, he wants love; from the Right People.
Yeah, sickening. All this admiration for the #1 capitalist in the USA.
Except he wasn't on as a capitalist. He was on as a tax policy guru.
And no question, Warren knows how to make money off of the tax code. They weren't asking him about that, though. They were too busy giving him big dewy eyes and having him validate the idea that rich people (in Warren's case, given his liberal use of tax shelters, other rich people) should pay more taxes.
He only has standing as a tax policy expert due to his success as a capitalist.
Tens of thousands attend Woodstock for capitalists in Omaha every year.
I am sure Buffett would prefer a balanced budget without raising tax revenue. He actually wants a flatter tax where even the Forbes 400 pays the rate the middle class does.
He should be a GOP icon for that.
He actually wants a flatter tax
Odd, I haven't seen him calling for 30% tax rates for people making less than $20,000 a year. Or decrying the fact that 47% of the population doesn't pay any income tax.
Or maybe you don't know what a flat tax is.
I said "flatter".
I am for a completely flat tax by the way - after a $25,000 exemption for everyone.
Fair for all.
So, you don't know what a flat tax is. Thx for the confirmation.
Sure I do. You don't.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_tax
You don't.
I am sure Buffett would prefer a balanced budget without raising tax revenue.
Why are you so sure of this?
Why don't I recall America's Kindly Uncle Buffett vociferously pushing for spending cuts or entitlement reform, rather than higher taxes (on other people)? I see no reason to believe he cares about a balanced budget at all. In fact, given the opportunities for rent-seeking and arbitrage that chronic deficits present, I'd be willing to be he wants no such thing.
I am sure Buffett would prefer a balanced budget without raising tax revenue.
Actually, he doesn't (from an article cited by you a few months ago):
Why can't he be more like Donald Trump and vomit out platitudes, nonsense, and weird CT and get on TV all the time?
Wait, he's not like that?
In his op-ed, he implies that any person with money to invest will invest it all in the first thing that comes along with a rate of return higher than a bank savings account. He doesn't mention risk, opportunity cost, etc, which apparently exist only in Grover Norquist's imagination.
The man is a skilled manipulator of public opinion. How in the world that literal-vulture capitalist became popular is beyond me.
He said, and says, the Right Things to the Right People. He is no different than some Hollyweird Star who laments Third-World poverty, but does little to actually alleviate it, particularly with their own money.
It's the genial, self-deprecating, Grandpa-ish exterior that permits this. He's like the Dominick Dunne of the financial world.
He did a full takedown of Grover. Of course he could not get into risk factors on a fictitious investment opportunity.
Every capital gains investment opportunity has an element of risk, and he was completely ignoring that as a factor in deciding whether to invest. He was presenting the investment decision as only having to do with ROR and nothing else.
And didn't he ignore the fact that you'd compare the ROR with other investment possibilities?
Yes, opportunity cost was also ignored.
Though in this case that is probably less relevant since most investments would be taxed equally at the higher rate (govt bonds being a major exception).
When a natural disaster occurs in Iowa, they will be happy to have the help from much richer states like New York.
Cash accounting is so twentieth century. A big chunk of that money comes from the Federal Reserve.
A big chunk of that money comes from the Federal Reserve.
Woo hoo! Free money! Value created out of thin air! Magic!
#1 capitalist in the USA.
You keep using that word....
I forget that only Republicans can be capitalists.
No one said that.
well, the tiny little voices in Shreeeks' head did.
There is an old Damon Runyon story about big time gamblers taking the train to Florida. Gambler A maneuvers Gambler B into a bet about the over/under on how many white horses they will see along the route. Which makes for a nice crazy bet, except he has arranged to "seed" a few fields with white horses to skew the anticipated outcome.
Warren Buffett is a lot like Gambler A. He ties to restrict his "bets" to events with skewed outcomes.
Brooksie, are you seriously suggesting that he only invests his money in ventures where the confidence interval of a successful payout is high? Certainly irresponsible of him, right that. I guess such fiscal prudence absolves him of paying his Fair Share.
And he's taking into account the tax benefits when calculating that confidence interval? He must be some sort of alien considering these factors that no human would.
The problem is that Buffett uses his wealth and connections to slant the playing field in his favor, so that such profitable investments are more likely to fall into his lap. The man's fortune came from depending on the side effects of the estate tax.
Why is it that nobody ever points to Buffett when they are boo-hooing about evul speculators, paper-shufflers, and various other forms of the dreaded "financial engineering" vampirism?
He targets democrats for his affectations, and they are just that (democrats) because they are easily manipulated?
They do on far lefty boards.
There Obama is a right-wing sellout for not pumping Single-Payer and foisting a market-based private insurer system on them instead.
And Beffett is a greedy Ayn Rand type.
And there are right wing blogs where George Bush is ripped for being a liberal who didn't kill enough Moooslims... so I guess you can't complain about Fox News anymore.
Fox News is on TV 24/7. Far left blogs are not.
And the media outlets blowing smoke up Buffet's ass are on 24/7 too.
Yes, even CNBC fawns over him.
Again, he is #1 at making money. Better than some dumb jock spewing nonsense anytime.
Maybe you should insist on him releasing his tax returns before your tongue goes all the way in to his fundament.
Actually, I'd argue he's long-term destroying value. The companies I am personally familiar with have gone to shit in terms of product quality since Berkshire Hathaway bought them. They offshored production, cut corners, and generally destroyed the brand. But BH will simply sell them off when that happens, right? Buffet's full of crap, just like you.
ROMNEY DID IT TOO!!!!!!
Name a couple. I call your bullshit.
He told the Woodstock capitalists he is investing $3 billion this year in his companies (capital equipment).
Justin and Nocona. They've pumped the advertising budget, off shored production, and are turning out crap I won't buy. Which is a damn shame, because my old (pre-BH) Noconas are my favorite pair of boots.
Funny, I provide examples and you disappear.
A shoe company offshores? C'mon, they all do that.
BH is into big game like IBM, Burlington Northern, Wells Fargo, etc
MSNBC.
Leftist.
Comrades! Join me to build shit shovel AK for defense of motherland!
I teared up a little. That is a goddamn 'Murcan, right there.
Awesome.
And it shoots really pretty well.
My favorite part of the instructions:
Then I riveted a whole bunch more shit
build shit shovel AK
NICE
He told the Woodstock capitalists he is investing $3 billion this year in his companies (capital equipment).
And the tax effects of those purchases are completely irrelevant to the decision, right?
Hmm...might there have been a political motive to delay Manning's trial until after the election? Nope, nothing to see here.
