Don't Expect Much Debate Over Entitlements, France To Ban Homework, Cuba Makes It (a Little) Easier To Leave: P.M. Links
-
Mitt and Barry will likely chatter about the "fiscal cliff" tonight, but you're unlikely to hear much discussion about entitlements, which consumed $2.2 trillion of this year's $3.7 trillion federal budget, and are poised to swallow the whole works.
- Gary Johnson received the highest grade — a B — of any presidential candidate from the Secular Coalition. It's not total consciousness, but he's got that going for him, which is nice.
- France may ban school homework, because it's "unfair" that some kids get more help at home than others. Paging Harrison Bergeron …
- Cuba will eliminate requirements for exit visas, though it still maintains some restrictions, including tight controls on trained and educated people who might actually do well elsewhere.
- In Canada, some political speech now falls under the punishable "bullying" umbrella, including advocacy against abortions.
- Sanctions against Iran have reduced oil exports by one-third, which should make them compliant and reasonable any day now.
- Call it, "Away From Home Alone": More kids are migrating to the U.S. unaccompanied by adults to escape violence in Central America.

Gary Johnson received the highest grade ? a B ? of any presidential candidate from the Secular Coalition.
He would like to thank Jesus, whom he met on Everest, for this.
"I feel like I've been mauled by Jesus."
The only god worthy of worship by a libertarian is the almighty Aqua Buddha.
Shit, and all this time I thought it was Aqua Velva. Buddha damnit...
Fancy perfumes? Fancy bottles?
Well, in my defense it does kind of go with the monocle and tophat...
This part interested me:
"This Presidential Election Scorecard was produced by the Secular Coalition for America, which serves as the national lobby for atheists, agnostics, humanists and other nontheistic Americans."
Is anyone here a member of, or affiliated with, this organization? Or are they simply claiming to represent people who aren't members and seeing if they can get away with it?
I thought that was American Atheists. But that might've gone belly up when that crazy lady who founded it got killed for her buried gold.
"Or are they simply claiming to represent people who aren't members and seeing if they can get away with it?"
Isn't that what pretty much all advocacy/lobbying groups do?
Yes, if they can pull it off.
Sometimes a group has a substantial membership and can influence events that way.
Some groups take a shortcut around the whole membership thing and just try and make people believe they speak for their supposed constituents.
It's worth the gamble because reporters are so lazy a dog napping in the sunshine looks like a go-getter. They would rather assume some group which goes around issuing press releases is actually representative of a larger population, because that would mean the press releases just have to be recast as articles and the reporters can go back to covering cat videos and Presidential debates.
Or they can combine cat videos and presidential debates...that's an idea!
France may ban school homework, because it's "unfair" that some kids get more help at home than others.
Teaching kids that life is fair. You're on your way to the top, Frogs!
No no no no, France, the proper broken windows solution is to quarter government tutors in unsupportive homes and government antitutors in homes whose parents encourage education.
You know Bloomberg is pissed that he didn't think of this first.
Why don't they just keep them children 24/7 at school. Parents are so overrated anyways.
Parents can teach. Teachers can't parent. At least, not other people's kids.
To be fair, have you met some of the kids that teachers have to deal with?
Sure. But we're way past the time where the teachers aren't as much of the problem as the students.
Privatize education. Get the government completely out of it. Private institutions will allow teachers the power to deal with disruptive kids without all of the government-induced nonsense.
Well said.
See, at the school I'll be founding, cattle prods will be allowed under the very detailed and draconian contract each parent signs.
It's unfair that some kids can get ahead. We should all be at the same level because life is about being fair and we should all be equal in everything.
Fuck, they should just shoot themselves in the head and be done with it.
That's unreasonable. Instead, let's employ a Procrustean bed.
They have noticed something true: that parents are probably the biggest influence on educational outcomes. But the solution is just ridiculously backwards.
Getting rid of a lot of homework is probably a good idea. But this is not why.
Althouse has dug up a cached version of the Slate article in 08 where the staff gushed about why they were voting for Obama. Curiously Slate doesn't have the article online anymore. It is almost like it is embarrassing or something. Megan O'Rourke for the win
For his charisma, his cautiousness, and his cool. In a time of high stakes, we need someone who can sort out the best course of action without bridling in anger. A candidate who actually nods when his opponent makes a powerful counterargument?as Obama did several times during the last debate?is a rare bird. Of course, Obama is untested in many regards. My main concern about him is this: How will he deal with making an unpopular or tough decision? Can he keep his cool then without losing confidence in himself? I believe so, and that's why he has my vote.
http://althouse.blogspot.com/2.....n-his.html
This "rare bird" is flying into a picture window at speed.
Let's prepare it for dinner! Oh wait, already done.
"How will he deal with making an unpopular or tough decision?"
Easy, he just won't make any decisions.
Make sure it's not in Texas, that could be a violation of some migration treaty.
I look forward to seeing more of this dug up as the TEAM BLUE retards start to flee the sinking Obama campaign.
Especially if tonight's debate goes as badly for him as the last.
Tim Wu, whoever he is
Most of all, I like his obvious inner calm. It suggests that his decisions will come from somewhere other than expediency, anger, or fear. It's like electing Obi-Wan Kenobi as president.
I think we did hit peak retard in the fall of 08. We just didn't realize it and have now forgotten just how bad it was.
We were very critical of it at the time, too, John. The cult-like nature of it was mocked. Remember when reason posted the video of the schoolteacher and her kids singing to Obama? We went pretty nuts over that.
I am not saying "we" as in the people on this board. I mean "we" as in the country at large. No, even though a few of the more dim witted Reason staffers voted for the big BO, Reason nor its comentators for the most part did not participate in the retard storm that was 2008.
Tim Wu is the Ivy-Leaguer fuckwaffle who is behind the net neutrality cluster.
http://chronicle.com/article/C.....t-/126756/
Only the best and the brightest can save us from ourselves, you know.
My wife and I are friends with an actor and his wife, who live in LA. During '08, the husband bought, and put up in their entrance way, a large portrait of Obama.
Naturally, they quietly took it down last year. And I always remind them of it.
It sorta does feel like we're watching the Fonzie Jumping the Shark rerun over and over again.
Look, the modern term is Nuking The Fridge. Try and keep up, old chap.
Make me think they're putting William Perry in a microwave, and that would be messy.
That'd be one big ass microwave.
For this page to be true there would have to be a 4th Indiana Jones movie. They did great work making old Harrison Ford look like Indy again in that Youtube clip, though.
"Oh, and for the record, there was an episode of Happy Days where a guy literally jumped over a shark. And it was the best one!"
2008 was the nadir for the vast majority of Americans lifetime.
$15 trillion in lost wealth, 700k lost jobs per month, record negative GDP, housing implosion, two shitty wars, TARP and massive corporate bankruptcies.
Then in 2009 Obama was inaugurated.
"When I was inaugurated, this country was on the brink of a precipice. Since that time we have taken a giant step FORWARD!"
Winning
Old Israeli joke, but thank you.
And everything got even worse. And your point is?
Bullshit. Everything I listed has vastly improved.
Nothing has vastly improved. Employment hasn't vastly improved. Wealth hasn't vastly improved. The deficit hasn't improved. Our standing in the world hasn't improved. You are a lieing sack of shit shill.
You're an idiot.
Net wealth is up $12 trillion, stock market 40%, 5 million new jobs, GDP up into solidly positive territory, one less war, TARP loans repaid, and there are very few corporate bankruptcies compared to 2008.
Every thing you said in that post SHREEK is a lie including and and the. The Stock market is only up because inflation is up. The new jobs are mostly government jobs and don't cover the expansion in population. Fewer total people are working today than were in 2008. TARP hasn't been repaid. And we are at war in Libya, NW Pakistan and Yemen where we were not before.
God you are full of shit. Like some idiot on Fox News.
Government (including state and local) jobs account for the majority of jobs lost since 2009. There are 5 million more private sector jobs since summer 2009.
Every single big bank has repaid TARP. There is no war anywhere other than Afghanistan.
Really, just shut your dipshithole.
You're the fucking idiot. Stock market being up means squat since it is all paper wealth and assets are being diverted there becasue there is ZERO return on bonds. Housing hasn't recovered (and won't) which is where the vast majority of people with any wealth at were putting it. GDP is only up becasue of government expenditure (debt!! more debt!! I know you love that shit asshole!!) so it is acutally negative. Employment to population ratios have not budged so there are net fewer jobs since demographics add 1.8M new workers each year.
I hope you choke on you cool-aid, dickhead.
Fuck you.
The stock market is up due to record corporate earnings.
RECORD
CORPORATE
EARNINGS
Fine - nothing at all to do with nowhere else to park liquid assets? You go right on beleiveing that. And the rest, you retarded shit-for-brains asshat?
RECORD
NUMBER
OF DOLLARS
Fuck you.
No, fuck you, you Team Blue gloryhole.
Nothing you say has any credence. It's so easily refuted you should be embarrassed.
$15 trillion in lost wealth,
Most of which was phantom credit and never actually existed.
700k lost jobs per month,
Which continue to slide down as people leave the labor force, as the ever-declining LFP rate shows.
record negative GDP,
Which is currently being propped up with 8-12% deficit spending over the last 3.5 years.
housing implosion,
Bubbles always pop eventually--and Obama and the Fed are gunning pedal to the metal to reblow it again. Talk about not learning from history.
two shitty wars,
Which continues to be one shitty war and several drone strikes, not to mention supporting NATO in a war of choice where NATO wasn't even being attacked.
TARP and massive corporate bankruptcies.
Not only has TARP not been paid back, corporate bankruptcies continue apace AND cities are now starting to get in on the act.
You want to brag about Obama's credentials? I just shoved them up your ass.
The point is "a giant step FORWARD!"
off the precipice.
The Fortune 500 generated a total of $824.5 billion in earnings last year, up 16.4% over 2010. That beats the previous record of $785 billion, set in 2006 during a roaring economy. The 2011 profits are outsized based on two key historical metrics. They represent 7% of total sales, vs. an average of 5.14% over the 58-year history of the Fortune 500. Companies are also garnering exceptional returns on their capital. The 500 achieved a return-on-equity of 14.3%, far above the historical norm of 12%.

Shriek doesn't see why corporations are sitting on so much cash. It must be because the economy is so wonderful right?
I can't wait to cash in my bet with my Obamatard friend that the inauguration would be the high point of Obama's presidency and that he wouldn't keep any of his campaign promises.
How much was it for? Was it for his/her tears?
My dingbat neighbor bet me three bottles of Jack Daniels on the election. Two on the result and one on whether Romney would win independents. He was a total condescending douche when I told him I thought Romney was going to win. I didn't say anything good about Romney or start a political argument. I just said there is no way a President with Obama's record could win re-election. God I am going to enjoy collecting that bet.
You conservatives don't wager on Intrade and it is too bad for us.
So will they come and take the box you live in and your lap top on election day or do the debts you have run up on intrade not come due for a few days?
John, you and others here are awfully confident Romney will win. Polling has them close or Obama ahead a little.
John and the other conservatives are not rooted in reality.
For instance - the US sucks to them but there are record corporate earnings now set every quarter.
http://www.dailyfinance.com/20.....ng-profit/
John and the other conservatives are not rooted in reality.
Projecting, again. The guy who supports Obama then turns and claims that he supports Liberty? And accuses others of being out of touch with reality? Too. Fucking. Funny.
Any chance I can get some of that weed you are smoking? It must be awesome!
Is Obamahagiography.com available?
It appears untaken.
I thought that was nbc.com?
You need to do it pro. You owe it to future generations to document this idiocy.
I give it to the Reason Foundation. They can use the site to document the media's self-destruction over Obama. So that when they try to pretend it never happened. . . .
I think we should let Shriek write the introduction.
That's fair.
I would only say that it may be premature to say that O is finished. Let no idiocy from red team go unanticipated.
What, they're going to wreck the economy or make things worse in the Middle East?
well, no. I guess not. but maybe the idiocy I'm really thinking of is voters...like in Ohio.
Well, there are many of us capable of dumb decisions. I'm just hopeful that the dumbest decision is increasingly off the table. In favor of the less dumb decision. The smart decision is also off the table for most people.
A candidate who actually nods when his opponent makes a powerful counterargument...
Put into practice as president in the way he embraced Fox News.
Put into practice at the first debate, in which he forgot the up part of his nod.
Nice.
...including tight controls on trained and educated people who might actually do well elsewhere.
And here I thought everyone in the Socialist paradise was educated.
And had free healthcare.
...the best healthcare in the world!
and free! rac3rx, don't forget that!
OH YES, we can never forget this wonderful education and healthcare are all FREE!
Some assclown spouted this sentiment at my local bar last week. I reminded him that Cuba was a fascist dictatorship. For a moment, there was a flicker of light in his eyes. He agreed that fascist dictatorships were bad, at least.
For a moment, there was a flicker of light in his eyes
You fool! He was Goa'uld!
So the US can expect to receive more inmates from prisons and mental hospitals like during the Mariel boatlift in 1980?
Say hello to my little friend.
In Canada, some political speech now falls under the punishable "bullying" umbrella, including advocacy against abortions.
We are the Canadian Borg. Resistence would be impolite. Please lower your shields and kindly surrender your ship.
Or not, if you don't want to, eh.
Calling Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant!
Since they are not the targets I doubt they will get involved but their previous performance against the Canadian Human Rights Commission didn't end well for the government.
Mitt and Barry will likely chatter about the "fiscal cliff" tonight, but you're unlikely to hear much discussion about entitlements...
This is a town hall debate. The people want to know how you're going to make their minivans safer and their playgrounds drug-free.
No, they want to make sure the checks and other free stuff is going to keep coming.
Boxers, briefs, or magic underwear?
Gov. Romney, what's your favorite brand of beer?
"I don't drink, but apparently the president can't get enough Arrogant Bastard Ale. you are what you eat after all."
Near?
Hey I don't drink alcohol and I could answer this in a heartbeat.
Dos equis
Cause they got the best commercials
Course the jingles on the new MGD64 commercials are pretty catchy too.
As opposed to whatever fucking commercial has that line "you ever get deja, deja, deja vu?"
I don't even know the product, but I've heard that commercial so many fucking times in the last two weeks.
Some Samsung phone, it is making fun of the iPhone collective
How are the participants vetted? Is it like jury selection?
The moderator, Candy Whatsherface, will be picking the questions.
I meant who got into the room in the first place, but you're right, the key filter is the moderator. Did she used to date Obama or something?
Don't know her history, but she works for CNN. Odds of her being unbiased is slim.
"Slim" and "Candy" belong nowhere near each other. The better descriptor would be "remote." -))))
Gallup picks the 'undecideds', You know, the same Gallup that was being threatened by the D campaign for the way they do their polls.
I recently took a presidential poll, where I was asked who I was voting for:
1. Obama
2. Romney
3. Don't know/other
So, by the standards of this poll, I "don't know." Oh, I fucking know all right.
So, those of us who have decided we won't vote for Obamney or Robama could be selected for the "townhall" as an "undecided" voter?
Man, I'd love to ask, "Why won't you douchebags let Governor Johnson debate with you? Are you pussies?"
Excellent question.
Or, "Either candidate, please tell me why you're better at making decisions about my life than I am. Oh, and fuck you both in advance."
In Canada, some political speech now falls under the punishable "bullying" umbrella, including advocacy against abortions.
Again, Canada recognizes no freedom of speech.
They never really claimed to, did they?
They have a thingy in their charter thingy that says "peeps can say what they like" but then they have a rider thingy on the end of the first thingy that says, (to the effect) "unless it's gross, icky, or found unreasonable"
Which of course means that the second clause invalidates the first one.
You have freedom of speech! Until you don't!
Tony approves.
So does the entire left.
In charge, the right people are!
Use of the word "right" is considered politically offensive in Canada. Better watch out for mounties.
Yup, that's about it. And this fucking Amanda Todd bullshit will only serve to exacerbate. As a side note the intewebz vigilantes Anonymous outted the dude apparently, gave his name and address.
You can say anything you want in Canada unless the government says you can't.
Worry not, before I skedaddle, my Maritime Annihilation Project (sans PEI) has been green lit.
That should give them something to talk aboot.
Funny thing is, some of Neil Peart's lyrics could be misconstrued - this better not land him or the rest of Rush in jail.
Hmm which happens first, they go to jail over hate speech in lyrics written a decade ago or they finally get their due and get put into the Rock Hall of Fame?
Just say no to the RnR Hall of Shame Rush...they should rise above!
Let's offer them asylum, if so.
For being entered in the RockNRoll HofF, right?
Because who wants to spend any time in Cleveland, amirite!
I thought Rush was in charge of Canada. How could they go to jail?
Regardless of the weak protections of free speech in Canada as a whole, the article is about the paved-over hell Ontario, home to the greatest repository of weapons-grade stupid in North America. Whose premier just resigned after shutting down the legislature to avoid wearing a several-hundred-million political corruption scandal. Fuck Ontario.
Sanctions against Iran have reduced oil exports by one-third...
Which means now they don't need nuclear power, since they have all that extra crude to burn. It's simple logic.
No, this means we must attack now since more burning of oil means they are attacking us with Global Warming or Climate Change or whatever they call it today.
I believe it's "Climate Stagnation".
Mitt and Barry will likely chatter about the "fiscal cliff" tonight, but you're unlikely to hear much discussion about entitlements, which consumed $2.2 trillion of this year's $3.7 trillion federal budget, and are poised to swallow the whole works.
I stand by my prediction that Ombummer will go Full Metal Santa Claus with an army of Straw Elves and Good Ole Amiable Shit Flopney will match him entitlement by entitlement.
Thanks J.D. for focusing on this for at least a minute. As Eduard vH astutely pointed out in the "90 reasons" thread, the economy was not one of them, and this is the collective albatross that will sink it.
Gojira Jimbo is absolutely correct: People, including Middle Class (I still have yet to see a numerical definition of "Middle Class") voters will not give them up without a (quite possibly violent) fight, to say nothing about the Entitled Class, and most notably the Medical-Care-Is-Right-Crowd.
There is a silver lining to that. It is going to get to a point where all the government will be able to do is pay for medicare and social security. While it may not be perfect, considering all of the damage the government does, I think I might take that trade.
Think about it, no more drug war, a small national defense, no EPA, OSHA, DHS or much of anything else, in return for paying off the old people. Not a perfect trade, but a tempting one.
It seems more likely to me that Medicare and Social Security will become income-adjusted programs, than that it will become a bare-bones operation paying off the elderly.
Then you are saying that they will chose the bureaucrats over the old people? Possible, but that won't be easy.
A Guaranteed Favourable Outcome, even a shitty one, will trump old folks in the end, John. Never underestimate how easily Utilitarianism can be rationalized when people's standards of living are affected, and downwardly mobile will be fought kicking and screaming.
ObamneyCare is already slated to gut the Medicare portion of CMS, John, but does nothing to touch Medicaid. You won't be paying off the Golden Oldies that way. You're simply paying off the Rosseau Crowd to not go apeshit.
The rest of the spending you reference is not going the way of the dodo either, as those Alphabet Soup agencies you mention are firmly entrenched and for all intents and purposes operate independently of the original three branches of government. Name one agency, just one, that bit the dust.
I am talking about when they actually run out of money and we are Greece Groovus. It will only happen when we have no other choice.
$16 trillion in the hole, John? How much more Greece-y do you want to get?
We are not out of money until we can't print anymore. We are not there yet.
Technically, we can never run out of "money" if all we're doing is printing bank notes. We are, however, all out of actual wealth (the stuff that matters).
Investors still love our bonds. We are not Greece yet.
No they really don't. The fed is buying nearly all the bonds. Right now we are just printing money.
Bullshit. The Fed is buying MBS - not Treasuries.
They are also buying treasuries, dipshit.
Most of the treasuries are being bought up by the Fed last time I checked.
Bullshit. The Fed is buying MBS - not Treasuries.
You do know that they are currently our largest institutional debt-holder, right?
The only one that's larger is the SS Trust fund, and to cash out on that, the Treasury needs to sell its own bonds (aka, debt) to pay for them.
It's a lot more than $16T once you start adding in all the other debt that has to be paid from the same set of macreconomic activity.
Careful GM, if you agree with me you might catch the Racism! taint by association.
My taint is bulletproof, Jimbo. It will more than survive what Odessa, Donetsk, and Kiev can dish out. -))))
I'm told you keep it in a nuclear refrigerator. Care to comment?
States have already been cutting Medicare(aid?) and I haven't seen much fuss.
Plans to honor teenage Confederate spy in Arkansas raises controversy.
What, was he frozen in a glacier for 150 years?
I was wondering the same thing.
Oh, everyone was a teenager in the Civil War.
Oh, everyone was a teenager in the Civil War of Northern Aggression.
Oh, everyone was a teenager in the War to liberate the South.
"Controversy" because Pro-Confederacy = Wanting Slavery back. I learned this from Mark P'Tach... Uh, sorry, Potok, from the SPLC.
Not agreeing with the SPLC means that you are a hater, a racist and someone who wants to enslave people
Yeah, regardless of the cause there is something admirable about hanging rather than betraying your conscience.
I'm just glad to see that it was a White guy that was hanged in the Old South, for once.
I know why he's a history professor and not a mathematics professor.
FTA ""If you start talking about the 16-, 17- and 18-year-olds who were killed in battle, the number is infinite,"
I knew that the Civil War was bad- brother vs brother and all that- but I didn't realize that it killed an infinite number of 16, 17 and 18 year olds. There must have been a terrible overpopulation problem before the war.
and that is why one should reload before posting replies, so someone doesn't beat you to the same point by 20 minutes.
Good grief, but atheists are insecure.
Uh, how did you get that from the article TIT? Because we rate candidates? Religious groups do this all the time.
Also, the secular coalition doesn't speak for all atheists, and includes non-atheists...
BTW, nothing says insecurity like cringing in fear of the wrath of an angry god. Just sayin...
It's at least as stupid when religious groups do it.
Please name at least one concrete advantage that being an atheist has when it comes to job performance in any field which is not explicitly religious or anti-religious.
Not having delusions that a magic sky daddy will make your fuck ups work if you just believe in him hard enough?
That's not a concrete benefit in the professional world, nor is it an accurate generalized descriptor for religion and theistic beliefs.
Put another way, give me a concrete reason that I should care whether my doctor, banker, or Congressman is an atheist.
Because without the threat of Eternity in Hell, it is simply impossible for Man to be moral creatures. You want to go to an amoral doctor? Not me, bub.
???
I just blew your mind. Bang!!!
Please name at least one concrete advantage that being an atheist has when it comes to job performance in any field which is not explicitly religious or anti-religious.
If your point is that both sides get painted with an overly broad brush, I'll agree with you. Not all theists are fundamentalists who want to "teach the controversy" about intelligent design.
But if you asked me if I'd rather have an atheist or a Christian teach biology, without having any other information to go on, I'd pick the atheist. That doesn't mean that all Christians are bad biology teachers; it's just playing the odds.
I'm not sure where you're getting those "odds". That atheist biology teacher could just as well be a devoted Marxist-Leninist who believes in Lysenkoist evolution theory.
OK. Let's pick 100 atheist biology Ph. D.'s, and you give me a dollar for every one that believes in the modern evolutionary synthesis, and I'll give you a dollar for every one that believes in Lysenkoist evolution theory.
If the "odds" say it "could just as well be a devoted Marxist-Leninist" then you'll break even.
I would think that selection bias would take care of that problem -- most biology teachers (theist, atheist, whatever) are required to have taken a series of classes on biology. Those are classes that you simply can't pass without a working knowledge of the theory of evolution. In some cases, IDers who have such an academic background are more educated on the theory of evolution than their counterparts -- not because their own views are correct, but merely because being a dedicated adherent to those views in light of the evidence and applicability of evolution found in a variety of fields.
I am a Christian, but I'll agree in principle with what you're saying about the probability of an atheist being better educated on biology. I don't see that this is a distinction that should worry the person being educated or the person hiring someone to teach evolutionary biology: so long as the information being taught is accurate and the instruction is of good quality. I was taught evolutionary biology by an IDer in college, and wrote a paper on the subject in favor of evolutionary biology given the evidence available. (I got an A on the paper, just in case you were wondering.)
Which is worse?
Lilo endorsing Romney
or
Honey Boo Boo endorsing Obama.
Honey Boo Boo doesn't know what his wife is on about?
I think the real question is who did Yogi Bear endorse? You know it isn't Park Ranger Smith.
Don't that Obama poster look dusty?
Ordinarily, celeb endorsements mean nothing to me.
But when it's these two idiots, I point it out because it makes the respective TEAMs convulse in trying to defend how their candidate could still be worthy of respect when someone as stupid as Honey Boo Boo or Lilo gives the endorsement.
The picnic basket, of course. Yogi likes him some free swag as well.
You know, I thought he was smarter than the average bear.
He is. You'd think the park would alert visitors to the menace of a kleptomaniacal bear running loose wearing a fedora and a dickie with a clip-on.
It's the visitors who don't bring picnic baskets that have to worry.
True, notice that Yogi never shares with Boo Boo, and that little fella has to eat something [insert fridge logic]...
YOGI DEMANDS TRIBUTE
Wont follow that link. I try to remain as ignorant of the HBB phenom as humanely possible.
The worse news of the day:
Beyonce will perform at the Super Bowl
Why does the music for a football game has to be suck fucking pussyass lowest common denominator shit every year? Worst choice since the black Eyed Peas.
Also, as the richest Friends of Obama and Michelle, you just know Beyone is going to turn on them if they are kicked out of the White House when she realized Mooch expects her and Jay-Z to keep her up in the 1.4 billion dollar living expense life of which she has grown accustomed
football game has have to be suck
I have never heard of this Honey Boo Boo person until today. I see she's a fat white chick. I'm comfortable with that level of knowledge on this subject.
"Chick"? Isn't she like 5 years old?
All kinds of wrong, but fuck it, I'm not tangling with this shit window that crops every third word.
As long as Slash doesn't pop up to play SCOM with that 'get retarded' pop group again, it can't be the worst ever.
Because that's the time most people watch football. I don't like football, but I'll watch the Super Bowl.
Regardless of who's performing at half-time, I switch over to the Puppy Bowl.
Dude, I have been in a really shitty mood lately. Thanks for that. Puppies for the win!
From what I know of Beyonce, she might actually be an above average halftime performer.
The worst in all of Super Bowl history was either Aerosmith/*NSYNC or the Black Eyed Peas from a few years ago.
Should I as least look at one espisode of Honey Boo Boo so I understand what people are talking about or should I just be glad I don't know what people are talking about.
Don't do it.
Let it go, man...just let it go.
Very interesting article on Cracked today calling out Obama on the NDAA. The comments are hilarious, as to be expected.
http://www.cracked.com/blog/nd.....ing-about/
In reply to some Tonypitiful Obama apologizing:
Excellent.
I saw that the other day but didn't have the stomach to read the comments.
I think we can assume they alternate between "BUSH STARTED IT!" and "Romney would be worse!!"
My favorite comment:
Ha, I didn't see that one. That is good.
Dear Prudence: I love my girlfriend's 'naturalist' hairy body, except her chest hair.
Wasn't this covered in the morning links?
It was, but thinking about tit hair once today wasn't enough apparently. 😉
Ha! "Covered". I sees what you did there, Tonio.
I don't wake up early enough on the west coast to make the AM links so sometimes there is an overlap.
That's cool. I try to get all my shit done in the morning so I tend to miss them as well.
I hear the same thing from our youngest son on a weekly basis.
Why are you doing this? What kind of monster are you?
Are you talking to me or the guy who can't accept his woman for the natural beauty that she is?
Are there any other monsters here? Of course I'm talking to you. I also missed that from the AM links being a fellow west coaster and yet you still drag it into the light for me to see and be horrified by?
I'm not a monster, more of a high-functioning sociopath.
You and NutraSweet should meet up and attend therapy together. After you torture some small animals first.
"Sanctions against Iran have reduced oil exports by one-third, which should make them compliant and reasonable any day now."
As I said yesterday, this kind of thinking runs counter to the Iron Law - "You get more of what you reward and less of what you punish". Sanctions are punishment for Iran's nuclear program. Can you suggest an alternative? I mean I realize that there are some here that are fine with a nuclear Iran, so they oppose sanctions, but that doesn't change an Iron Law.
An invasion/occupation and thorough WMD material search would make Iraq look like a picnic and give Cheney his best war boner ever.
Iran has a smaller and worse Army than Iraq did. An invasion and destruction of their nuclear facilities would be easy. We just wouldn't and couldn't stay around to rebuild the country.
And invading and conquering Iraq was a picnic you demonic little retard. Trying to rebuild the country was the hard part. But we wouldn't need to bother with rebuilding Iran.
Re: John,
You're kidding, right?
Their standing army might be smaller than Iraq's in older and more innocent times, but remember that Revolutionary militias threw themselves to the guns, bombs and tanks of the Iraquis with total disregard for their own precious lives, during the Iraq-Iran conflict. You're talking about waging war against an army of several hundreds of thousands of Wolverines. Not a pretty prospect.
You're talking about waging war against an army of several hundreds of thousands of Wolverines. Not a pretty prospect.
For them but not for us. For the US it would be a question of bringing some more ammunition. That number means nothing. The US military is a full generation ahead of the Iranians. It would be like the German Army from World War II fighting M1 tanks. They would absolutely be obliterated in any kind of conventional battle.
The US heavy divisions would roll through Iran like crap though a goose just like they did against Iraq. All they could do is launch a guerrilla campaign, which is only effective if we stay around and try to rebuild the place.
An army that's willing to throw itself into our guns is not something we should be overly concerned about.
Re: Paul,
What's with this "we" business, Kimosabe? The problem is not one of ammunition but of will. Such a militia army will not simply give up. It's not up to me or you to be concerned - we ain't doing the fightin'! Soldiers will, and it is not like they're unconscious robots. Even if you think the army can massacre most of them, it is not like they will be fighting them in the plains of the Issus. The army will be fighting them in streets and alleys of cities before they can win.
"Give up" what? An insurgency will have a hard time gathering the resources and political capital to build a nuclear weapon, and would not be in a position to "give up" anything related to such a venture. If our goal were limited to punitive expedition or regime change without sticking around, then the insurgency becomes Someone Else's Problem.
Even if you think the army can massacre most of them, it is not like they will be fighting them in the plains of the Issus. The army will be fighting them in streets and alleys of cities before they can win.
They said the same thing about Iraq in '92. When America enters a war to defeat its enemies, it will do so-- especially when it comes to third-world shitholes. It's when we spend the next decade trying to nation-build that we run into problems. If you think we couldn't set Iran's nuclear ambitions back 25 years with a concentrated, deliberate military action, I think you'd be dead wrong.
Let the committed fight in the streets-- we'll be bombing their entire nuclear program from 50,000 feet, and what few troops we'd need on the ground would grind up whatever committed suicide squads come at them.
Only if we're stupid enough not to wage an air war.
Let's just hit the oil infrastructure and let the whole thing implode on itself.
I, for one, am not "fine" with a nuclear Iran. However, I realize the futility of trying to stop them from going nuclear. The only thing we can do is maintain an arsenal sufficient to glass any nation state who uses a nuke on us.
I think it will only make it easier for Iranian leaders to get support from the people now.
My whole point here is that it would seem that we need to jettison an discredited Iron Law.

MSNBC starting to go through the first stages of grief.
Please conjure the decency to leave when George W. Romney loses.
First stage of grief is denial. Even that hack Nate Silver has Romney's chances up to nearly 40%.
If you leave when George W. Obama wins.
Please conjure the decency to leave when George W. Romney loses.
Why? You've promised on a couple of occasions to leave if condition X or Y were met, and once met, here you come slithering back.
Your stupidity is cancer inducing, so either keep all your past promises to GTFO, or STFU about anyone else doing so.
Do you guys realize that you are responding to a shit stain?
They're not ready to write off Ohio, but it appears they're getting close. problem is, they can't. there's nowhere else for Obama to go to make that up. he'd have to run the table in every other toss up state
O PLZ O PLZ O PLZ O PLZ I am fucking sick of hearing nothing but election ads on TV and the radio here.
I think you're stuck. Obama can't bet on winning every other toss up. he's going to make his stand there.
It pleases me that you must bear this burden, while I am free of it.
Don't you live amongst liberals?
What does that even mean? Doesn't everyone? No place is 100% liberals or 100% conservatives, there's always a mix, even of it's slanted to one side or another. And why would "living amongst liberals" expose me to more election ads?
He's in Washington. That state is almost certainly going blue. Because of this, neither campaign is wasting money running lots of ads there.
The ads you can turn off, but you can't turn off your neighbours 🙂
Oh, I can turn my neighbors off too. I just show them a picture of Warty naked.
NAKED WARTY EVEN TURN OFF STEVE SMITH
PLZ O PLZ O PLZ O PLZ I am fucking sick of hearing nothing but election ads on TV and the radio here.
You watch tv... how quaint. I heard someone say something about the tv being all election ads, all the time. I was all like, "What is this tv of which you speak?"
To be fair, of course I have a TV, it's just not tuned to NBC, CBS ABC or Fox. It's tuned to HBO On Demand, Skinemax or Encore. Then I occasionally do a wild swing to MTV Jams, the History Channel or the Military Channel, then it's Demon's Souls after the little one goes to bed.
So you missed one of the greatest come-back games in NFL history last night? How sad for you because it's a blast watching Peyton Manning giving the count as he's pointing out what the defense is up to.
Missed it I did.
I don't much watch sports anymore. I hung up my sportsfan hat when George Carl was fired as SuperSonics' coach. Yeah, that long ago. If the sports industry depended on me to 'keep up', I'd still be asking about them Brooklyn Dodgers.
I think Indiana, Florida, NC and VA are already gone. Ohio would put Romney at 252 and give Obama no margin of error.
Apropos of everything, including the latest Big Bird nonsense, I present. . ."Obamana."
If he goes FULL RETARD in tonight's debate, he's probably toast.
I think he went full retard at birth. He's just been hiding it well.
You're about to lose your debate reaction boner, dude. There is no way anyone will declare Obama the loser tonight, no matter what his performance. I hope you enjoyed the last two weeks of the rending of garments and gnashing of teeth, because it's over. No more lamentations of the faithful.
You are right. Biden was a disaster and turned off women and independents and they crowed for a week about how great he was.
Tonight will most likely be a nonevent that won't change anyone's mind. But that won't stop the media from writing a week's worth of stories about how Obama got his mojo back. I would say the stories have already been written.
You're almost assuredly right, unless Obama really does something stupid, something they can't just groupthink away. And it's entirely possible that he will, such as being way too aggressive.
Stephanopoulos was the only one on the right page after the first debate, having the wits about him to claim it a draw. The other idiots were so shocked that couldn't help but wail in front of their audiences. It was a once in a lifetime shot.
(In fairness, I think Stephy never drank that Kool-Aid and knew full well what Obama's capabilities were, so he wasn't surprised.)
You're probably right, but Obama and his team have shown they can fuck up anything, so we'll just have to see what he does tonight. ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE. Except, it seems, for me to get a good corrosive gun in Borderlands.
If he goes FULL RETARD in tonight's debate, he's probably toast.
Hard to imagine. He's going to be primed to attack and be cantankerous. The Obama faithful will be happy about the style, even if he doesn't say a single intelligent and truthful thing. He merely need attack. The effectiveness of the attack doesn't bear on how the media will portray the debate.
I have to agree. The sequel just won't be as good.
They rarely are.
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
UK blocks the extradition of a hacker with Asperger's that hacked into US intelligence databases.
Well good for him since Uncle Sam was going to send him to a SuperMax prison.
Someone call Bruce Willis.
What does Asperger's have to do with any of it?
His defense is that his condition made him compulsively work to hack into the databases and that he had difficulty controlling his actions. Apparently the UK court bought it, hence they won't hand him over on human rights grounds.
http://legalinsurrection.com/2.....nst-obama/
Common peasantry joins with Kulaks against Obama. Just because Obama and everyone associated with him hates these people's guts doesn't mean they shouldn't be voting for him. What is the matter with Ohio?
We need the dues.
Ohio soup kitchen proprietor angered that Paul Ryan showed up, cleaned some dishes, and took a photo-op. No soup for you!
You know, we wouldn't care if Biden, Ryan, or anyone else showed up around here and washed some dishes. We can use all the help we can get.
Update: Antal, who describes himself as an independent, has voted in Democratic primaries for the past 17 years.
I've always suspected this about self-proclaimed "independents".
These people just hate the idea of anyone who's not a Democrat having human feelings/compassion. It's like they think they have a monopoly on doing good deeds.
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_.....t#comments
Oops. Apparently the scumbag who lied about being an independent also lied about Ryan cleaning dishes that were already clean. Also, this is apparently what the media outside of Reason has been going back and forth about all day. What serious, substantial people we have on TEAM RED and TEAM BLUE.
Why do Republicans insist on volunteering and give to charity? Don't they know if they were just Democrats, they wouldn't have to do any of that and they'd automatically be among the most morally upright people in the world?
Mitt and Barry will likely chatter about--
I'll be working late tonight, till past the start time of the debate. I've got a 52" TV on the wall in my office, but that shit will be tuned to The Weather Channel. No doubt some of the customer service people outside my office door - committed Dems, many of them - will be wanting me to turn the debate on (they did with the VP debate), but I'm going to put my foot down and say no. I simply can't bring myself to listen to these two clowns, especially when I have work to do.
Maybe one of the ESPN's will have a replay of of the Broncos-Chargers game.
the latest erosion of speech rights in canada is sad, but hardly unsurprising considering the slope they have been riding - a steady eroision of speech rights ... getting worse year over year.
thank god we have rule of law and a 1st amendment whereas they have parliamentary override and a craptastic protection for free speech
But, but...Canadian Health Care!!!! (Though I hear queues are getting longer and longer these days.)
Wow. A mountain community in Texas claims it is being terrorised by a 'naked caveman' who lives in the hills and harasses hikers and passers-by.
The man had apparently been living alone for 3 years and had supported himself by selling blood and recycling cans.
I mentioned this in another thread but yes STEVE SMITH has been found.
I am really disappointed in Texas. Why hasn't someone just shot this guy and no one seen a thing?
Re: John,
We only shoot at what we purport to eat.
STEVE SMITH NOT NAKED...STEVE PELT JUST THIN AFTER INDIAN SUMMER!
I had to dig through two years of archives just to understand this meme.
Uh oh... They're on to me...
I thought this might be White Injun gamboling about the plain.
No White Injun doesn't terrorize hikers. That's strictly a STEVE SMITH behavior.
There's a 3 page article on Politico posted yesterday about how several Libertarian U.S. senate candidates are poised to "spoil" the races for the GOP. 'cause Libertarian votes belong to Republicans, you see.
http://www.politico.com/news/s.....82379.html
Lefties who voted Nader have slowly retained their freedoms over the last twelve years. Some are even allowed visitation privileges with their families. They are not going to blow that all away by voting GayJay.
Next, they'll ban parenting, because it is unfair some kids get more love than others. There's a reason why so many couples in France have dogs and not kids.
They're confident nobody will want to leave paradise.
"You're a liar!" will soon enough be considered "bullying speech." Just one more step towards becoming a Banana Republic. I especially like the extra-protection for abortions, as if no discourse was cogent enough to argue for it; you need to silence the opposition. Neat, huh?
There are openings now for blockade runners. Good pay - let's get them some beer and wine.
What especially grating is the implication of anti-abortion advocacy being worse than pro-abortion advocacy. Nowadays, you're more likely to hear someone telling a pregnant person to get an abortion than not. I have a friend who actually witnessed a pregnant woman getting berated at a grocery store for saying she wasn't going to have an abortion, because she already had a kid and that's enough, of course. The idea that it's about freedom is BS.
Looks like the US is going to get deeper in Libya. I wonder how many of these guys will turn on the US troops like those in Iraq and Afghanistan?

"State Department official: Negotiations to extend U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan starting soon"
Gee, I thought the "primary objective" was killing OBL.
http://thecable.foreignpolicy......hanistan_s
Our primary objective was always installing that glorified drug-lord Karzai into power. If your 2 biggest rivals are Russia and China, Afghani bases come in quite handy.
We already have bases in Central Asia, though -- and as far as I know, we have no real interests in interior China or Russian Siberia.
In reality, it's the other way around -- we've made some major concessions to Russia on arms and military partnerships with eastern Europe (and to some extent, the Caucasus) in exchange for help with Iran and Afghanistan.

Waaaahhh! My phone bill! I don't know how to comparison shop! I need an iPhone, not any other kind of phone, so I don't have a choice and have a high bill! WAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
OBAMAPHONE!
Oh HM, that never gets old! -))))) I also noticed your recent uptick of the dispensation of karmic justice these days. Good show!
The cycle of karmic justice is related to my IBS flare-ups.
But, but bur The UK would give me a $20 phone subsidy! I want my damn free phone!
I really, really hate libertarians! They wont give me my obamaphone!
I have not met anybody who pays an $$80 phone bill other than the people that use 10GBs of 3Gs a month. I have an iPhone and my phone bill is $39..
The "I used to be a libertarian" thing gets old really fast.
When I see a comment like that, my instant thought is "no you didn't."

Libertarians the left's "two-minutes hate" to distract them frp, the utter suck of the last four years.
Let me repeat that,
"Libertarians: the left's "two-minutes hate" to distract them from the utter suck of the last four years."
I know. We've known that for about 3 and a half years now, but the ones who claim they "used to be a libertarian" are more galling than the regular pig-ignorant ones.
Actually, I don't doubt at least some of them.
It's been my experience that a number of young people who become libertarian don't really succeed in refining their knowledge.
As it happens, when they get out into the real world, their sort of infantile understanding of libertarianism doesn't hold up. When that happens, they abandon it completely, mistakenly assuming that libertarianism was just a childish phase they went through and that conservatism and liberalism are the "mature" ways of viewing the world.

So I gave the squeeze a key to my place so he could crash here while I was on vacation. I don't plan on asking for the key back, mainly because it's convenient for me when his work hours are weird.
Anyhoo - is it implied that he still needs to ask before he comes over, or do I need to explicitly stipulate this? My house is my escape lair, my sanctuary from the assholishness of the world. The unannounced pop-in is not in my vocabulary.
If he doesn't live there, he needs to ask before he comes over. I have to assume he knows that.
I would suggest, nicely, Dearest Kaptious One, an explicit, but fun and lighthearted, audible oral reinforcement would be a very good idea, human nature being what it is. He may know that already, as Epi points out, but since coming back from vacay/holiday, it may be wise to review said policy in lieu of the established comfort zone.
By this you mean a blowjob, right?
I should say that since I came home on Saturday he has asked to come over and hasn't just showed up in my living room, so he's not a lout or a cad or a bounder.

@Caleb Turberville, in response to a question you asked yesterday:
If the UK became a republic, Canada (and I would guess the other Commonwealth realms, depending on their constitutions) would retain the current Monarch or a surviving successor.
Also, since the UK parliament consists of the Monarch, House of Commons, and House of Lords with the reserve power in the Monarch it's not really possible for parliament to do away with the monarchy. There would have to be, in some sense, a revolution.
Awesome. Thanks for getting back to me on my incredibly esoteric question.
I did find out something about the Westminster Accords that the laws of succession are still soley decided on by the British Parliament. This comes with caveat that they must do so with the consent of the other Commonwealth monarchies, which, I presume, means their respective General Governors.
*Oops, or as the monarchists call them, Governor Generals. Whatever blows your hair back, I guess.
That may be outdated. IANACL but I think each country maintains its own succession laws under an agreement or treaty that they will be the same. In the case where one country made a unilateral change, they'd be on their own.
As an aside, since UK's constitution is AFAIK entirely unwritten, it would probably be far easier for them to get rid of the monarchy than Canada, where changes to the role of the monarchy require the consent of the House, Senate, and all provincial legislatures.
So Dinesh D'Souza was discovered having carnal relations with a woman not his wife.
