Don't Expect Big Tax Cuts from Romney, Most Americans Get Goodies from the Feds, Athens Is Off the Vacation List: P.M. Links
-
Don't expect big tax cuts if I win, Romney tells America, in a clever effort to deter anybody from voting for him. In related news, Obama opens up his lead in Ohio and Florida and is up by six nationally.
- Ninety-six percent of Americans have received assistance from the federal government at some point in their life, say two social scientists. So, dependency must be a good thing, right?
- The head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago wants even more monetary easing. Because … the Fed has been too stingy?
- A Brazilian court ordered the arrest of a Google executive after the Internet company refused to take down videos critical of a mayoral candidate. International borders are good.
- Fire bombs. Tear gas. Yes, it's Athens.
- You know that life without parole may be a bit of a harsh penalty for youthful offenders when Newt Gingrich comes out against it.
- Protesters pepper-sprayed during an Occupy protest at UC Davis last fall will each get thirty grand in a settlement with the University of California. Hmmm …

If only Santorum was Brazilian.
I read this first as "If only Santorum had a Brazilian" and had to spend a few minutes waiting for the room to stop spinning and my brain to stop combusting. So screw you for that FoE.
Actually, as I was typing that I was trying to figure a way to tie waxing into the joke. But alas I had Pantsfan and gaijin breathing down my neck for first so I dropped that thought process. I'm glad your brain picked it up for me.
Your excuses are even weaker than your jokes.
But at least they're first.
or are they?
Unless you count Tuccille. And no one counts Tuccille.
Whoccille?
But at least they're first.
Not this morning, sucka

crap...even in preview I was first. It must have been the question mark? er, !
you're first at being third
You fools. It's only impressive to be first if you actually read the links and comment on one of them and still make first. HEAR MY WORDS AS FIRST OF THE THREAD.
I bow in fealty and humility to lord fist
You bow before this false idol? Fool! He is a charlatan and a philatelist!
But first at it.
He's a stamp collector?
Yes. Isn't he disgusting?
My grandpa said he danced the Charlatan when he was a kid.
It's only impressive to be first if you don't mention being first.

Tycoon offers $63-million to any man who marries lesbian daughter
http://www.theglobeandmail.com.....le4569747/
Where was this guy 2 years ago?
From her picture, were I a single man I'd be willing to give it the old college try.
I'd even let her date any woman she chooses. No problem with me.
For $63 large, she could look like rosie o'donnell.
Hell, she could even be rosie o'donnell!
You're standards are way too low.
I'd marry Rosie O'fatty. I'd spend about 20 million on therapy and keep the rest.
I wonder how he arrived at that particular figure?
I'm guessing its an artifact of the exchange rates.
$63,000,000 converts to HK$488,527,200. So that makes it even more of a mystery.
Well, he *is* Chinese.
It's probably auspicious.
Which is within 2.3% of being a round half a billion in HK$. I would say it is an exchange rate artifact, plus the rounding of the $63M itself.
I have a feeling that it will end up like this.
I see from TFA that someone's already come up with my first thought which was to set up a deal to sham a marriage and split the money.
I see from TFA that...
Man pepper-sprays gay-bashing 14-year-old: heroic or just wrong?
http://www.theglobeandmail.com.....le4538511/
Halifax resident Christopher Whittle, 39, told the CBC, he used pepper spray on a 14-year-old girl after she harassed his boyfriend for weeks about being gay
So, imagine i'm *not* gay, and i'm being 'taunted' by a 14yr old..."heroic"?
Or are you just a touchy douche?
It's not heroic, it's assault and battery.
However, I'm not losing any sleep over a 14 yr old bitch getting a lesson in karmic retribution.
Actually, since it's Canada it isn't just assault and battery. It's possession of a dangerous weapon (pepper spray) as well.
What's with thin skinned adults attacking children?
Some children just need attackin'
Sure, but that's why you hire some other teenager to do your dirty work.
Fair enough.
Sampson, is that you?
Their skin is thinner from all of the money shots they receive from their gay boyfriends.
Hmm...that explains women too.
You, sir, are a genius!
Yeah, but pepper spray. Would it not been more appropriate to strip her pants down and spank her bare fourteen year old bottom like you would in the old days?
Dude, what the fuck? Are you some sort of high school principal or something?
Paper spray is a cruel form of punishment. Corporal punishment is the old fashioned way to instill values in the children, HM.
How many papered sprayed youths do you know eventually turn up running away from their Texas homes and working Berlin SM clubs, not very many. Probably none. But if you were to go to one and ask how many were spanked as children I bet most would say they were. What are you trying to do, deplete Germany of its greatest resource?
Nah the paper sprayed girls stay at home in our local clubs.
The important thing to remember with young ladies, you have to do one or the other, pepper (sorry for leading you astray) spray them or spank them, otherwise the girls turn into this when they reach adulthood.
For 63 million, I'd hit it. Or not. Whichever she prefers, so long as I get the money.
I may not be the most attractive mate for a lesbian, but I'm willing to split the check with her if she'll marry me, and we can divorce after a year so she can marry her girlfriend. No skin off my back.
Don't expect big tax cuts if I win, Romney tells America, in a clever effort to deter anybody from voting for him.
Refreshing honesty or overt stupidity? You decide.
Both!
That rug really tied the room together.
People in New Jersey can be stupid

...Obama opens up his lead in Ohio and Florida and is up by six nationally.
With zero percent of the precincts reporting, Tuccille is calling it for Obama.
PigBoy was spitting out bits of Oxycontin while berating these polls on my drive home today.
It was very entertaining.
The new wingnut excuse is "oversampling" Dems by the polls. They remain detached from reality.
Look! It's Shiny!
So you think that the Dem turnout is going to be higher than in 2008, and the Repub turnout lower?
Because that's what the D v R sampling adjustments are based on. Many of them range from D+8 to D+11. The historical average is around D+4. 2010 was D+0. If I recall, the Dem "wave" of 2008 was d+8.
Rasmussen's current data shows R+3 or 4, BTW.
There's no "right" answer to this, of course, as we are trying to predict turnout. But the sampling adjustments used in many of these polls strike me as absurd. I don't know if we've had a D+10 in the last thirty years.
I dunno. If you're complaining about polling samples, you're losing. In 2004, it was, "Polls miss people with cell phones, they're undercounting the youth vote who will help Kerry win". I believe the average of all polls is D+5, which is not crazy.
Wait...Kerry won in 2004? That explains a lot.
Here's the thing: in 2008, at the height of Obamamania, he got D+8. If you think enthusiasm for him is that high in 2012, you're just wrong. You could argue its D+5 or D+3. Even in a huge GOP year like 2010, It's D+1 sometimes. This isn't an exact science, don't get me wrong.
But if you put it at D+8 or above, you are making the argument that there is more enthusiasm and support of Barack Obame then there was in 2008. Anyone who thinks that is true is badly delusional. If he does win reelection, it will be close. Equaling or bettering his 2008 mark is just not going to happen.
You're not factoring in the fact that no one likes Romney.
McCain is a war hero and had a mavericky VP with lots of sex appeal and Christianny hick charm built in.
McCain turned a lot of independent voters off. I'm not sure the independents hate him. He is the quintessential milquetoaste candidate the moderate center loves. He may be putting many to sleep but that's another matter.
Yeah, a lot of people hate his guts with a passion, but they're all pretty much diehard Obama supporters anyway. We're talking about the non-partisan independents (and no, that's not redundant).
Wait a minute: so now you're saying Palin helped McCain?
Polls at this date are bullshit, and news touting Obama's forthcoming victory are nothing more than the media getting served up fresh party propaganda... "If you project strength, you ARE strong! Imagineer it!"
Of course it's nonsense. The media is hardly going to trumpet the fact that the president is in trouble. If they did that, coupled with the economic and international situation, there might be a landslide the other way. Which would mean, in their eyes, a mandate for evil Republican values.
Media bias, the last refuge of the loser.
Who, me? I'm voting for Johnson, so my candidate actually has lost already.
I'll have a beer with you as we bemoan our loss.
You mean that "conservative bias" all the liberals claim the media has, because the big media outlets are supposedly owned by conservatives?
if this election is D+10 or some nonsense there will be no republican party when this is over. they'll lose every competitive house race in a wave of biblical proportions. it's ridiculous. you'd have R house members fleeing from Romney. and D's would be begging Obama to swing by.
Oh, I highly doubt it will be D+8. There's also no chance it will be D+11 or R+4 (which is what Rasmussen's showing). That's why the aggregation is valuable-ish. Average out the outliers over time and they'll balance out (which I believe they are at around D+5). The ones that get the attention are the outliers because it's a lot more exciting to say, "Obama leads Romney by 10 points" or "Romney pulls into a tie" than the ones that say, "Obama by 2-3 points, basically the same as the last 3 months". So the perception is the ones with the skewed sample rather than the ones that cluster around the middle.
Some of these polls stink, but it sounds to me like a lot butthurt cons/GOP partisans are preparing for 2 possibilities:
1) Romney wins: HA YOUR POLLS SUCK
2) Romney loses: You bastards and your crappy polls made our candidate look bad and lose! WAH.
I used to think nobody could blow this but it looks like Romney is about to do just that. 4 more years.
T-Paw dropped out way too early. He has all the bland, inoffensive strengths of Romney, lacked the crazy of the rest of the primary field and lacks the major weaknesses that Romney has in the general (e.g. there's no Pawlenty-care). Had he not panicked and dropped out so early and made it out of the primary, he'd be smoking Obama.
He must have gnashed his teeth to the root.
The governor who had affair with the Argentinian should be kicking himself too. That was NOT a career killer he could have gotten over it!
To be fair to Sanford, as someone who visited Argentina this year, I can understand how one would give in to the temptation of Argentinian women
It makes perfect sense that the coalition that Obama put together in 2008 has only grown in size and enthusiasm.
I'm sure all those unemployed independents are still pulling for him.
I know one thing--that's total bullshit for Florida. We lean fairly significantly to the right in national elections, and the circumstances that got Florida to vote for Obama last time don't exist at all this time.
And those circumstances were...?
Pissed off at Bushness and the economic downturn, wanting some sort of change.
Now, we're pissed off at Obamaness (which is largely just Bush+) and the prolonged economic downturn, and we want some sort of change.
What part of Florida do you live in?
Do you live near the beach? Do you have a couch?
Based on my prognostication which is based on counting Obama yard signs while driving through my subdivision on my way to get onto I-4 in the morning, is that Florida will go Romney on a roughly Bush v Gore count. Mind you, Seminole County might well be the most Republican County in Florida.
I was surprised in 08 at the number of Obama signs. This year there's one (in front of the house of one of the three families on my street that I know to contain Democrats)
On the other hand there is a Romney/Ryan sign in front of at least one house that had an Obama sign in 08.
Someone needs to market an "All politicians are lying scumbags-2012"-sign. I'd totally buy a house with a yard just to put it up.
I didn't know you lived in the greater Orlando area. I feel your pain (although Orange county, which will be about 72% Obama I'm sure)
I didn't know you were in Greater Taintsville either.
Beside you, me, and BakedPenguin, how many more are there?
Isaac, I moved to Pinellas county.
Oh, OK. How long have you been gone?
I won't comment on how thw race will go nationally, though, except that I think the margin will be much narrower.
Of course, the margin was too narrow in 08 for BO to have claimed any kind of mandate for radical change but he went ahead and tried anyway.
Intrade now has Obama 76 vs Romney 24 reflecting the fact that Obama leads in every swing state except North Carolina. He only needs Ohio and Virginia to win.
Again - Rasmussen does not factor in 'cell phone only' voters.
http://www.outsidethebeltway.c.....a-leading/
There is simply no route to victory for Romney barring some October surprise and with a scandal free Obama administration that is unlikely.
(Solyndra and F/F are only scandals to the right-wing fanatics)
Shiny!
(Solyndra and F/F are only scandals to the right-wing fanatics)
You're retarded.
(Solyndra and F/F are only scandals to the right-wing fanatics)
Right, because left-wing fanatics don't give a shit about wasting other people's money.
No way in hell Rasmussen's ID spread is right--Republican ID has never been higher than Dem in modern history. Might as well chuck that poll out (though it has had an occasional good election day).
The standard methodology is to ask for party ID (not registration) during polling, meaning all those other polls that show a big spread are simply reporting the data, not arbitrarily picking a large Dem advantage. It doesn't, in fact, show a large surge in potential Dem turnout. It shows a large drop in GOP ID.
So Shiny!
Your tears will be a nice addition to my post-election-day cocktail.
Actually, Tony, post-election day, you'll be more like this.
Jus' sayin'
Are you sure? I have no reason to believe Obama's losing.
Sure, if you read the bullshit media "polls". But if you use the scientific method and academic rigor to construct a statistical model then you'll see that Romney is predicted to win by a landslide.
A rigorous scientific statistical model with a sample size of 8 whole elections!
That model doesn't include personal favorability, which seems to be the single biggest factor that's tanking Romney's campaign.
Considering there have been only 56 elections, I'd say 14 percent is a fair amount.
Of course, Tony, you're the man stupid enough to wonder why the doctor doesn't take all of your blood when you have a blood test.
Even 56 elections wouldn't be enough to develop a science of presidential election prediction.
I think personal favorability is all-important, but it's just a hunch.
It's 8 data points. 8. If someone at my office puffed up an 8 data point model like that, I'd kick them out of my office.
And some different guys built a different statistical model that predicted a different result.
Both of these model survive like those gambling letters that purport to predict the outcome of a football game. If enough people are predicting coin tosses, someone will look really good at predicting coin tosses even if it's sheer luck. Especially since 5 of the 8 elections in that time period were predictable blowouts, only 3 would really matter. Not saying that Moody's model is better than CU's, but one of them is going to maintain a perfect record even if the model is just a midget flipping a coin in a box.
You SF'ed the link, bro.

Fire bombs. Tear gas. Yes, it's Athens.
I'm beginning to wonder if many of Greece's austerity measures are being negated by what they spend on crowd control.
I'm beginning to wonder if the media people who are calling people protesting about getting less government handouts "anarchists" are retarded.
Yes
The anarchist brand deserves to be saddled with Greek teat-sucklers.
There is no anarchist brand, you philatelist.
You need a new word. Like nongovermentitty.
Sorry, nongovernmentitty.
You said "titty". Huh huh.
I thought you'd like that part. Assarchy is also available.
Pshaw. Like anarchists could have a brand. Come on, Fist, you know better than that.
Fucking. Reloading.
Yeah, like, corporations have brands and other corporationny stuff.
No, the media are just calling them what they call themselves. It is merely that people who call themselves "anarchists" are retarded.
What austerity measures?
There has to be some cutting back going on. I mean, they're not getting firebombed for no reason, right?
So they're cutting back on citizens?
"for a firebombing mob called Reason..."

Ecclestone: New Jersey GP in doubt.

That's OK. You couldn't have paid me to go to that.
I'm going to try for Montreal next year, if not Austin. But, by gum, I wouldn't have fucking New Jersey as my debut F1 GP.
F1 has a history of great US street circuits.
Dallas, Phoenix, Vegas, Detroit.
I'm fine with street circuits, but New Jersey? Screw that.
I want to see one in Pittsburgh. F1 cars should definitely go airborne.
I miss the Denver GP. It was fun while it lasted.

Shout out to darius. I had to be away from the computer for awhile so I couldn't respond to your defense of the odious Edward Said.
So...tell us why Said's "Orientalist/Occidentalist" critique is correct and not merely a way to intellectually mau-mau any non-Arab, non-Muslim who expresses an opinion on the region.
Extra points if you're able to support Said without bringing up "THE JOOOZ!1!"
Not darius, and by no means saying I agree with everything Said had to say, but I do think there has definitely always been a bias in Western views of Eastern culture, all the way back to Ancient Greek interpretations of the Persian Empire
A BRITISH toddler has become the first person in the world to be born with an extra strand in his DNA, in a condition so rare doctors don't even know its name.
Hopefully it means he's Green Lantern, and not Superman. Superman is a doofus.
Can't be Green Lantern, that's accessory-induced superheroism. Superman fits the bill better. Cyclops even better.
Maybe we're responding to imminent zombie attacks by evolving mutants. That'd be cool.
"I don't care for jewelry on men."
And even that is tied to that re-charger thingy.

The hell he is.
Dude, Superman is a complete doofus. He has super strength and retard smarts. Fighting a lava monster? Better try to punch it or something, because he certainly wouldn't use his freeze breath. Fighting an ice monster? If only he has laser beam eyes to melt it... oh wait he does! Too bad he'll just try to punch it or something.
He's got total recall and defeats Luthor all of the time.
Nah, he was touched by Vorlons.
So, technically he's not human.
Yeah, well, neither is Warty.
No, he's British.

I enjoyed that book. Greg Bear is all right.
I did too, and I agree.
The last third of that book sucked.
I believe that what's happening here is that someone is creating a small group of people immune to all standard viruses that can infect humans, in preparation for the deliberate release of the superflu.
I see you've as well have read Wool, Fluffy. Well, it's not exactly the same, but the superflu part is.
Actually, no. I read a short story a few years back where a detective investigating a rape discovered that the rapist DNA wasn't DNA. And this led to discovering that there was a conspiracy to have a parallel race of people who wouldn't be vulnerable to diseases that would wipe out the rest of us.
Can't remember the author or name.
NO! IT'S ALL SEMEN!!!
Greg Egan wrote that story. I forget the title.
Fascinating. I hope they keep him alive to see what he...becomes.
Undercover work like this, dunphy?
Don't expect big tax cuts if I win, Romney tells America, in a clever effort to deter anybody from voting for him.
But everybody he knows- important, patriotic people like Eli Broad and Warren Buffett WANT to pay higher taxes.
Don't you get it?
Bad wedding photos
I forwarded this to my fiancee who has been worrying about our flakey photographers. That should calm her down.
There is reason they take about 10,000 pictures...
from the ninth picture (cake cutting):
The pictures of the evening do, which hosted 120 guests, were taken without flash because one of the photographers complained about being epileptic.
Then why are you a photographer???
No shit! How is this the line of work you've gotten into? You think some of the seizures early on would've been a discouragement. Or, it's a bullshit excuse for not using a flash.
I can't believe the photogs went out of business from irrate customers demanding refunds.

Apparently, AIDS researchers should be immune to criticism when they use studies with piss-poor methodology.
Bonus sentence from article linked:
Now guess who they're talking about. Muslim terrorists? White supremisists?
Hey, guys, it's about circumcision!
Now, I don't know about you, but I believe that, being as he was the greatest and most compassionate President ever, Abraham Lincoln would have been a strong opponent of circumcision, don't you agree?
I heard Lincoln was, in fact, an aardvark.
I'm sort of curious about how this comes up in a conversation.
Yeah, but I heard that Washington used to fuck the shit out of bears.
Asshole. Now you've done it.
I find it very humorous. Kinda like that SPLC that said that said that men not getting married in or before their 30s was indicative of them being in a "possibly violent hate group". The rhetoric the lefties are using has overtaken that of the social conservatives.

Athens is indeed a mess but don't let this deter you from visiting the Greek islands. They're as peaceful, safe, and happy as ever. There are fewer people there wholly dependent on Uncle Sugar (or Theo Zaccharis, as it were). I've been to Rodos, Kalymnos, and Crete three times in the past four years visiting family, and aside from communist party propaganda everything is great.
The trouble with Greece... is that it's full of Greeks.

Nobody likes Romney. There is not enough Obama hate to overcome that fact. Of course, it's possible Romney could be polling even or above if he had simply refrained from campaigning.
Pat yourself on the back, T o n y. I think you might have said something with which most people here will agree.

Nobody likes Romney
really? Because everyone is overwhelmed with bursting love for the Gitmo-keeping, war-starting, economy-fucking, drone-asassinating, crony-handout-giving, drug-war perpetuating Obama?
There's just so much to love
Nobody's perfect.
Tony w/spaces, you are the worst sockpuppet ever.
And watch, when Tony's bullshit is challenged by reality, he'll disappear in a poof of smoke, only to reappear in a different thread to peddle the same bullshit over and over; never acknowledging any counter-argument to his nonsense.
DO IT ROCKAPELLA!
Did you just say TONY would disappear into a poof?
[shakes head]
Homophobic racist other-er.
I should be in this Poof!
My argument for Obama has always been and will remain "he's better than the alternative."
I happen to think he's better than we should have expected, but that's immaterial.
I don't see a viable third option so if my issue is foreign policy and civil liberties I'm gonna go with the guy who's not surrounded by Bushie neocons thank you.
And again, he puts his fingers in his ears and goes "la-la-la!"
And when enough people counter his lies with fact, he'll disappear and pop back in on another thread like nothing happened.
I see the assertions, now what's the argument? That I should vote for Romney?
Yep, just like everyone else here.
Do you only think in binary?
Is that a yes or no question?
Nope, but our politics happens to be binary. I don't like that aspect of it, and would much prefer a system in which real libertarians, among other factions, could have real political influence. That's just not the system we have.
Bushie neocons
You mean Barry stopped evangelizing democracy at gunpoint to the peasants in Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen or FSM-knows where else he's drone striking civilians.
Nope, just in a less expensive and incompetent manner.
Ladies and gentlemen, Tony w/spaces; sockpuppet; Team Blue whore; an existence completely lacking in irony.
The "Bush also got reelected" theory.
Bush did it too!
Instead you'll take the guy who is worse than a Bushie neocon. TEAM
Bullshit nonsense.
That is essence of every post you make Toney, stripped of any pretence or diatribe.
"Obama is worse than the guy who started the Iraq war based on lies" is mendacious crap I hear from all sides of politics, but it's still stupefyingly dishonest crap.
My argument for Obama has always been and will remain "he's better than the alternative."
That's a stirring argument. "Sure my guy is a tyrannical fuckwad, but he's better than Romney."
Tony w/spaces, you are the worst sockpuppet ever.
Welcome to America.
You really are a salty whore for the brand, aren't you?
Slap a donkey on murder and malfeasance, Tony w/spaces, the worst sockpuppet ever, is there.
Yeah, Bush 43 was the perfect GOP candidate.
He loves Jesus and faked clearing brush on his pretend Texas ranch.
Vapid and perfect.
And said he would get us into fewer wars and roll back abuses against civil liberties.
People keep falling for that shit, incredibly.
Ok, so Mitt's campaign is imploding, he can't stop saying stupid shit, and he has said all along that the most important thing is beating Obama...why doesn't he drop out and endorse Johnson?
Romney may not liberate a human being or, through inaction, allow a Libertarian to come to power.
why doesn't he drop out and endorse Johnson?
A bold stratagem, to be sure.

Vegas wasn't even a "street course". It was an autocross course in a parking lot.
