Libyan officials said Wednesday that U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens was among four Americans killed in an attack by Muslim protesters on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi the previous evening.

"I do condemn the cowardly act of attacking the US consulate and the killing of Mr Stevens and the other diplomats," Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur said on his Twitter account. "Amb. Stevens was a friend of Libya and we are shocked at the attacks on the U.S. consulate."

Over CNN what passes for the commentariat is posting deep thoughts like “it’s time to declare war on Islam.” (paraphrasing, but that’s the substance of one comment.)

What could that possibly mean that isn’t horrific ? Do people think before they type ?

Why are they mad at us? As far as I know the U.S. was never legally involved in the conflict there. If there was some criminal involvement, we should probably just extradite the person or persons responsible at the highest levels of government to the extremist parts of the country.

The following comments by Christiane and Rubin Amanpour are probably worse than anything posted on the comments at CNN:

“”There is obviously freedom of expression in this country. There is also a 100-year-old law by the United States Supreme Court which says you can’t cry fire in a crowded theater,” said Amanpour. “So, now one has to figure out the extremists in this country and the extremists out there who are using this and whipping up hatred.”

“What’s happening here is deliberate provocation at a transitional time,’ Amanpour continued.”

And then the kicker:
“We know there are limits to free speech, the classic being you can’t yell fire in a movie theater,” said Rubin. “So figuring out how hateful speech is treated by our government, so people around the world don’t see, in an unsophisticated way, something coming out in America and thinking ‘well the U.S. government could have stopped that’ when we can’t stop that.”

Yep, that’s what we need the US Department of True Speak, who’s mission is to stop out Hate Speech.
