Brickbat: That Will Make You Go Blind
In the United Kingdom, the Royal National Institute of Blind People reports that more than half of the nation's National Health Service trusts are restricting cataract surgery. The institute says the trusts have imposed tougher standards for offering the surgery, standards that could force patients to wait until their vision has seriously deteriorated before getting surgery.

But at least that blindness is free.
Seems to be quite a lot of blindness in the US as well, the kind surgery cant fix.
I just had a brilliant idea for a new tax.
You didn't build those cataracts.
Anyone know if it's because they want to make sure as few people as possible see the unsanitary conditions of their hospitals?
I see the UK's Braille teachers' union is advising the NHS now.
"restricting ... surgery", "force patients to wait"
Coming soon to a neighborhood near you!
Thanks Barry!
I laughed... and I feel shitty for it.
The previous patients weren't sufficiently appreciative of their new sight.
Fucking ingrates. We'll show them.
It's not rationing, it's Top. Men. deciding when surgery is actually needed in order to maximize resource allocation.
I had a prof a couple years ago who had that surgery. He was out for maybe a long weekend. And he didn't have to go blind. Just one week straining to read papers behind thick lenses, the next week no more glasses. Obviously, he didn't spend enough time on medical leave/disability.
"It's not rationing, it's Top. Men. deciding when surgery is actually needed in order to maximize resource allocation."
I detect sarcasm and derision here, because it is a given that such a system is inherently disfunctional. Captain zero says exactly this, and nearly with the same words, in earnest. More evidence that the man and his supporters are morons.
Five minutes on google in 2008 would have told anyone what they needed to know about the guy. I am pretty pissed at anyone who voted for the POS, and even more pissed at Bush and co. for precipitating his election.
I haven't been around at all this week because I've been taking the bar exam so I thought Captain Zero was some new progressive troll. Took me awhile to realize he's been trolling the nation for four years.
How do you think you did on the exam?
You know what else will make you go blind?
methanol?
gollywagging?
Pokin' at yer eyes with a sharp stick?
Killing your father then sleeping with your mother?
A classy classic literature reference!! The general level of the discussion went up 5%. Plus, no Tony yet!!
Jenkem?
Those are five excellent responses. Where is Mary? This would be great material for another movie on libertarian humor. But then again, I don't think she wants to make ya'll look good.
Hitler?
This is just a right-wingnuts meme - the is no place "United Kingdom."
Now there is a wonderful unicorn and fairyland of "Sweden" that is a socialist utopia.
Exactly! A republican talking point.
(fingers in ears) la-la-la-la, I can't hear you.
That's all very interesting, but let's talk about Romney's tax returns some more.
So now we have Blind Panels. Sigh.
