A.M. Links: Trolling the Newest Tool in Counterterrorism, Drone Strike Victims' Families Sue U.S., Voter Fraud Alleged in Philadelphia
-
The State Department's newest counterterrorism project, "Viral Peace," aims to troll extremists on the internet to discourage others from being radicalized. The project's seed money budget is in the thousands of dollars.
- Family members of three Americans killed in drone strikes in Yemen filed a federal lawsuit against top officials at the CIA and the Pentagon, including Leon Panetta.
- John McCain strongly condemned political attacks against Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton. Michele Bachmann has led a charge questioning whether Abedin is influencing State Department policy in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, because she is Muslim? "These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit. And they need to stop now," McCain said.
- Justice Antonin Scalia denied a falling out with Chief Justice John Roberts over last month's ObamaCare ruling.
- The lone Republican on Philadelphia's elections commission alleges a wide range of voter fraud in May's primary election, including "[p]eople voting twice, voting by non-citizens who are not eligible to vote, to people voting who are not registered to vote, to people voting in parties other than their own," in a report released yesterday.
- Kim Jung Un was given the title of marshall, the highest rank in the army, after he sacked the army chief in a move to consolidate power. Though the new Kim speaks in public much more often than his dead father, no reforms are expected and North Korea remains a totalitarian hell-hole.
- There are bronies in the military.

Watch out, guys. Mrs. Kravitz is a state department plant.
I was thinking TELLMOFF or Terry, but YMMV.
TELLMOFF is almost certainly an *ATF* agent provocateur.
So was Terry, with his "libertarian militia".
One line from NYPD spy Richard Rosenthal's book on his infiltration of the JDL still stands out in my mind:
"If the NYPD infiltration of the JDL was like a seduction, the ATF's attempt could be characterized as attempted forcible rape."
BTW, I highly recommend this book. It's absolutely riveting.
Wait, so these assholes pestering us here are getting paid by the State Department?
Oooh, I'd call my congressman if I thought he gave a shit.
Maybe I should start a similar program! I'm a thousandaire!
Please deposit...fifty....cents...to continue...
Please someone explain to me why Bronies exist. Really.
Proof that God exists and that s/he is fucking with us. That's all I can come up with.
Useful in the military - let them lead the attacks, the enemy will die laughing. The Germans were awed by Scottish bagpipers leading their regiments into battle....just before their Maxims mowed them down.
Operation "Get Behind the Darkies Bronies"
Because you have to try even harder to get attention now-a-days.
That makes some sense. So it's like a frat boy version of hipsters, just sadder.
I, for one, can't wait to see what the hipsters retaliate with.
I'm betting on "Brobies". Dudes who like Barbies. It's the only thing that immediately comes to mind that might be gayer.
"Ironic hats and beards and emulations of working class lifestyle are no longer getting us noticed. Gentlemen, what should we do?"
"Uh, actually be working class?"
"Kill him."
You obviously don't believe in the power of friendship.
I imagine Chesty Puller had friends too, but I just don't see him as a brony kind of guy.
Chesty Puller would not be able to process the phenomena of bronies. To him, it would be like they were from outer space or something. He'd probably just shoot them.
Not near as much as I believe in the power of airstrikes.
I am more of an arty support guy myself.
King of Battle is nice, but the Combat Arm of Decision is where it's at!
CAVALRY, BY GOD!
I didn't know what a Brony was until I saw this and Googled it.
I hate you.
Could be worse. You could be the parent of one of those "things".
Look into the abyss and despair
I blame "bath salts".
I tip my hat to you for posting a high-quality 'Can't Be Unseen' that isn't some horrendous fatty that sarcasmic occasionaly taunts John with.
When I get home I'm going to troll the shit out of that asshat's tumblr. He should be mocked as viciously as humanly possible by all.
Hey! Maybe you can get the State Department to PAY you to troll there!
Bonus!
Holy...
"Very nice wallpaper yes? It was mine for awhile, until I heard somepony else was using it. So I might as wel share it with the world."
WTF do they need a name?
You're not alone
I gotta say, if they're even slightly right, I'll be glad to have something 10% watchable when my daughter gets old enough to monopolize the TV.
We have given away our hearts we have given away all our dollar-denominated assets including our hearts we like regular anarchy we like rational derangement we we we so excided we say contradiction is the fluid in which we are suspended we turn and return and turning is the form contradiction takes when we are drifting we turn round and round in the night we are citizens of the turn we are tropolitan and in the city of the turn in the moving contradiction we haven't really eaten or slept in a couple of days and the men are beautiful and the women are beautiful and we remember that we meant to come here and never leave we meant this over and over but it meant something else
No more meth for you
I don't know either, but my 10-year-old daughter and her friends mock them viciously.
Because sometimes after a hard day dealing with the shittiness of the adult world you just want to sit down and revel in the power of love and friendship.
Also, Fluttershy.
After a hard day of dealing with adult world shittiness I wanna sit down and revel in the power of beer and bourbon, not cartoons about magical horses.
"By drinking heavily and banging newlyweds?"
"Apparently that's my grieving process!"
No one going to touch an Archer quote?

Perhaps I should make you all watch my movie, Terms of Enrampagement again.
I thought it was Casablumpkin?
Not with those giant man hands, no.
Truckasaurus!
Here's the best scene from the movie.
That's when you go take out your hatred and aggression on killing dragons. What kind of Dovakiin are you, anyway? 😛
FUS...?
So-called "Bronies," adult men who are fans of the TV show "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic," have apparently been around at least since 2010
WTF? I've never heard of "bronies" until today, and I'm wishing I could go back to not knowing about them. A little bit of me just died.
Please someone explain to me why Bronies exist. Really.
So the FBI could more easily track sexual predators based on their torrent downloads.

I went to a college with a guy who ended up becoming a brony. He also claims to be a "libertarian socialist" because he "supports policies which actually work". My takeaway is a certain number of humans suffer from terrible brain damage.
I'm a Libertarian Communist: I believe everyone should be free of the all powerful state. wut?
Both believe in the withering away of the state?

That's not what Dunphy said!
He meant competently investigated.
Goddamnit Sarcasmic, stop being such a bigot.
Dunphy misspoke - he was distracted by pig pen banter of the latest Good Shoot.
Someone should open a cop bar and call it the "Pig Pen".
Yeah, you can serve shots from a holster and call them "Good Shooters".
Gary Johnson Helps Narrow Obama's Lead in New Mexico
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....-john-fund
with most supporters of Ron Paul deciding to go with Mitt Romney in order to eject President Obama from the White House.
Not surprising. It's those damn Socons again!
The Republicans will never come around on civil rights. The Democrats might. But only if they lose an election or two because some principled Democrats voted for people like Johnson.
Why would they bother, they'll win without changing any of their platforms. People are that lazy and dumb.
Say what now?
That is just it. If the war and civil rights are such a fierce moral imperative, how the hell can any Democrat not vote for Johnson? Who is Greenwald endorsing? If he doesn't endorse Johnson, he is just saying he cares more about leftist welfare than he does about civil rights. In short, he loses any credibility on the issue. I don't care how much chin scratching whining he has done over the last three years.
All liberals care more about the welfare state than anything else. The left gives lip service to civil rights just like the right gives lip service to limited govt. Then you watch what each side does and figure out that neither means it.
I heard it said once that the Republicans pay lip service to economic issues so that they can regulate what they truly care about: social issues. Conversely, Democrats pay lip service to social issue so they can control economic ones.
In short, DOOOOOOM.
randian,
you ever get the feeling that these public pronouncements are orchestrated between the parties? It's like "you say this, I'll say that, and we both get something that we want."
To be fair, Democrats never really wanted to be the party of civil rights. They just saw an impossibly tempting void when Republicans went after the redneck vote. Before that, it was the trail of tears, slavery, the CSA, the KKK, Jim Crow, eugenics, Japanese concentration camps, nuclear war, vietnam, etc. Where they weren't suppressing votes with literacy tests and poll taxes, they were stealing elections with machine politics and outright fraud.
This whole "democrats are better on civil liberties" thing is sort of an unplanned 4-decade detour that seems to be ending. If the libertarians and Ron Paul types can rein in or drive out the fundies and neocons, maybe we can bring things back to normal.
Ron Paul's congressional district base are fundies. If you drive them out you lose. Not realizing this is a terrible blindspot in some libertarian quarters.
How did that "liberaltarian fusion" work out again?
"Ron Paul's congressional district base are fundies"
Fair enough, there are libertarian fundies, but I suppose I meant the statist asshole faction.
All liberals care more about the welfare state than anything else.
When there isn't enough money to fund their crony capitalism projects and the welfare state, we will find out which they value more.
Civil rights aren't even in the running.
Tribalism usually trumps thinking, unfortunately.
Yup
The left tends to lump together civil and "economic" rights (I feel so very wrong for saying economic rights). To them, welfare and haebeus corpus are of equal importance.
I lump them together too.
All rights are civil rights. I dont see a need for an economic axis and a social axis.
Economic rights are civil rights.
Which the left doesn't really believe in at all. To them rights means free shit from the government. With the corollary that if the government isn't providing it, then it's denying your rights.
See Healthcare is a right as an example. And Birth control is a right as a specific case.
I actually do think that access to healthcare is a right. But that means that government should not be involved at all in my healthcare decisions. Which is exactly the opposite of what lefties mean by that phrase.
I can see Greenwald endorsing someone other than Obama (Johnson, or the Green candidate). He had a great article a while back castigating liberals for not endorsing Paul in greater numbers, for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
It's the others that will never do be anything but Democrat--Yglesias, Klein, et al.
I don't take the others seriously enough to even consider them. I despise Greenwald. But I do take him seriously enough to see if he actually has any principles.
It would be vastly more likely that he'd endorse the Green, whoever it is, than Johnson.
Endorsing Green is fine. You can be a socialist and still care something about other civil rights that are not economic. But if he doesn't endorse someone besides Obama, he will reveal himself to be nothing more than a hack.
If he doesn't endorse Johnson, he is just saying he cares more about leftist welfare than he does about civil rights. In short, he loses any credibility on the issue. I don't care how much chin scratching whining he has done over the last three years.
Exactly,
It's not like his individual vote means shit anyway.
Democrats can say nice things about the few civil liberties they care about all day, but when they keep pushing for fewer and fewer limits on government power, you can see that they aren't serious, by and large. Of course, there are some exceptions who see where we're heading.
The Republicans will never come around on civil rights.
Um, what? The GOP was the civil rights party before 9/11.
The Patriot Act was largely composed of the Clinton DOJ's wish list that they couldn't get past the GOP Congress in the late 90s.
with most supporters of Ron Paul deciding to go with Mitt Romney in order to eject President Obama from the White House.
Well, there's your problem.

John McCain strongly condemned political attacks against Huma Abedin...
On top of everything else, Abedin has to endure having McCain as an advocate?
does McCain realize he lives in DC where everyone has an agenda and everything beyond "good morning" can be characterized as a political attack? And why would it seem unusual that a Muslim might have sympathy toward other Islamic groups. No one has an issue making that connection between Jews and Israel.
Anti-semite! Rhoemite!
Not a bad point, except for Lady Wild-Eyes is trying to roust Muslims, whereas everyone wants pro-Israel-minded bureaucrats in the State Department.
As a side note, Huma's kinda hot.
No one has an issue making that connection between Jews and Israel.
Are you kidding me?
We're not talking about idle messageboard banter here.
Bachmann demanded congressional hearings.
If any congressman held up a chart showing family relationships between White House aides and members of pro-Israeli groups or Israeli citizens, and demanded hearings and started mailing out subpoenas to random Jews, they would be cuts to ribbons.
Ribbons.
We wouldn't be reading about McCain "shaming" someone in the press. There would be resignation demands and the House leadership would be scheduling a censure vote.
Sure. But they would have an honored place in academia and on the left. See Walt Mersheimer as an example.
How is that relevant?
It is relevant because antisemitism is a hell of a lot more accepted than people want to admit.
I thought you believed in guilt by association.
resignations over this? Come on. There aren't resignations over bona fide crimes that committed by govt folks (see: Rangel, C.; Holder, E., et al).
Isn't Huma married to Anthony Weiner?
If she's a muslim double agent, she has made the ultimate sacrifice for her faith.
if Anthony and Huma can get past Twitter, why can't Bibi and Hamas get past a few rockets?
There is a bad missile joke somewhere in there, but someone else can make it.
He was always her beard. Huma was reputed to be Hilary's lover for years. She totally plays on the other team. That is why he was out trolling on twitter.
Huma was reputed to be Hilary's lover for years.
Wow, that an even more ultimate sacrifice.
She is definitely a woman who wants to get ahead. But cute lesbians love ugly women. I can't figure it out.
But cute lesbians love ugly women. I can't figure it out.
Is that sarcasmic bait?
The 'ugly woman' is the proxy for a man.
it's just a shortage of other cute lesbians. When the cute ones cannot find an attractive partner, they shoot for some bigger than looks - power.
I will never forget the time a lesbian friend invited my girlfriend and I out on her (lesbian friend's) birthday. We were in some famous lesbian bar on Capitol Hill where 90% of the women dressed like thugged out dudes. The only good looking chicks were the bartenders and the chick at the door.
Hot lesbians are mostly fiction.
I've often gotten really mean looks from butch lesbians when they see me check out their 'lipstick' girlfriend. Of course they never do anything about it... biology being biology, not many woman have the upper body strength to contest men.
Hot lesbians are mostly fiction.
They're definitely the exception to the rule. I've seen and met some cute lesbians, but you start digging a little and more often than not they were simply FUCK YOU DAD types or fag hags with a queer fetish as opposed to legitimate lesbians.
Lesbians transmogrify. They start out as the cute lipstick lesbos of your Penthouse Letters dreams and slowly bulk and flatulate into hairy imitation men with detachable penii.
It's a frightening process to watch.
You realize she and Weiner have a natural-born child, right?
James Thompson has a daughter, so what? And did not Jim McCreavy ("I am a gay Amerrican") have more than one kid too?
And a "beard" is a woman who thespianizes to protect a gay man.
The other way is a merkin, I guess?
'Huma was reputed to be Hilary's lover for years.'
The rumor I'd always heard was Markie Post, from 'Night Court'.

Justice Antonin Scalia denied a falling out with Chief Justice John Roberts over last month's ObamaCare ruling.
Unfortunately for Scalia, all that matters is how Roberts defines their relationship.
Roberts: Scalia can choose to be my friend or not. If he doesn't want to go to the mall with me, though, he will be subject to a penaltax.

Back in the day (late 18th/early 19th century), they had reports of 20 kilo lobsters not being uncommon. Indentured servants could not be fed lobster more than 3 times a week.
I recall these facts from a Smithsonian exhibit 10 years ago. Whether or not I have a meeting today, I can't tell you without checking outlook. But I can remember useless lobster facts from a museum trip a decade ago. If only there were a way to monetize this without going on television...
Indentured servants could not be fed lobster more than 3 times a week.
I've heard that as well in many different variations, and from what I can tell it's an urban legend.
Take it up with the Smithsonian, not me.
More seriously, given the period, I would bet the identures were worded in such a way that you had to provide mutton or beef a certain number of days of the week. I'm guessing lobster wasn't specifically mentioned.
If it's an urban legend, it's been one for a loooooong time on multiple continents.
Look it up. Seriously.
I've failed to find anything other than anecdotal evidence.
History is generally based on anecdotal evidence, you know.
Supposedly there was actual legislation on the subject, so a written record should exist.
Supposedly it was a judicial ruling:
In one Massachusetts town, a group of indentured servants became so upset at their lobster-heavy diet that they took their masters to court and won a judgment protecting them from having to eat it more than three times a week.
Or a contract stipulation:
Prior to this time, lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts and the Canadian Maritimes, and servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week.
I wouldn't say this is necessarily an urban legend but it reeks of oft-repeated anecdote. That doesn't mean it is not true.
Yup. I mean, that what I've always heard.
Oh, wait. Are you saying the indentured servant thing is an urban legend, or the idea that lobster was so abundant that it was despised poor people food is an urban legend?
Because I thought we were talking about the latter.
Are you saying the indentured servant thing is an urban legend, or the idea that lobster was so abundant that it was despised poor people food is an urban legend?

Why President Obama's reelection is no sure thing ? in 2 charts
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....ss_the-fix
I don't see where Obama is getting such good swipes. What Bain? All that does is remind the country that Romney once had a real job and Obama never has had one.
Meanwhile Obama keeps saying one stupid thing after another. First it was "the private sector is doing fine" and now it is "you didn't build that". I am not seeing this brilliant campaign that the media is seeing.
I don't see where Obama is getting such good swipes.
What do you mean, the two biggest issues facing America today are:
1) Who employed Mitt Romney 13 years ago.
2) What's in Mitt's 1995 tax return.
Well he did fund The Dark Knight Rises specifically to attack Romney. That's why his fundraising numbers have looked so low: secretly funneling money to Christopher Nolan.
Salon.com says that The Dark Knight Rises is a Tea Party screed.
I don't know who to believe!
One of the reasons the Nolan trilogy is so good is that it is politically ambiguous. The goons at Salon are probably pissed off that Batman didn't deliver some post hoc faggot screed about the evils of wealth.
I don't see where Obama is getting such good swipes.
that has far more to do with you not working at WaPo and, therefore, not being invested in the outcome than it does with your political vision.
Go back to your previous comments about things Obama could do in broad daylight and get away with. WaPo would be on the front line of the enabling committee.
No kidding. All of these so-called "swipes" are making me like Romney a little bit more (emphasis on little).
"He had a job with responsibilities!"
"He made a buck!"
"He tried to reduce his tax burden!"
"He had a diverse investment portfolio!"
"Other people valued his input!"
I fucking hated Romney during the primaries. But Obama's deranged socialist attacks are forcing me to defend him (that Romney for the grammatically challenged leftards).
Not that I'm going to vote for him, but still.
Screw you Ed, you stole my Bronies story!
Family members of three Americans killed in drone strikes in Yemen filed a federal lawsuit
It's going to be hard to argue against documentation that no one is allowed to see that proves these family members were enemy combatants.
Then they'll have to with a wrongful-death civil suit, with its lower burden of proof.
*go*, even
Yeah, but they'll have to prove their dearly departed weren't terrorists to prove it was wrongful. Good luck with that one.
It doesn't matter anyway. That drone has very limited personal assets.
They could put a lien on its Predator missiles?
I'm way out of my depths here, but is there a scenario where the government can't just say "trust us" and hide behind state secrets?
Only if a non-Democrat is pulling the trigger.
is there a scenario where the government can't just say "trust us" and hide behind state secrets?
"Trust us, there is not."
This is why requiring voter ID is racist.
Report: Only 17 lawmakers disclose tax return
http://www.politico.com/news/s.....78706.html
John Kerry, who is richer than Romney, never disclosed his. Of course Kerry made his money the old fashioned way, he married it.
False as to the tax returns. Here's Byron York at National Review analyzing Kerry's tax returns back in 2004, as part of which he specifically states, "In addition to his 2003 returns, Kerry also released federal tax returns from the years 1999 to 2002 yesterday."
http://old.nationalreview.com/.....140841.asp
Because his real wealth was mostly hidden:
Did Kerry release his tax returns going back 10 years like Obama is demanding Romney do?
Off the top of my head, I don't know. But your statement was that Kerry "never disclosed his tax returns," not Kerry "never disclosed ten years worth of tax returns."
I'll add that, per York's column, Kerry released four years of returns, which is twice as many as Romney's released.
But much more meaningless since he never released his wife's and she was the one with all of the money.
The tax return thing is and always has been stupid. I actively discourage anyone disclosing their wealth to anyone who does not need to know.
amen. Romney's rich. Is there someone who does not know that already? Mitt should stick to his guns, tell the Obama camp to fuck itself, and keep repeating that a release does not end anything, it just becomes the new flashpoint for the next round of stupidity.
The remainder didn't respond to McClatchy's request.

Amirite guys? Or is it only bad when money goes to someone other than Obama.
You are obviously racist.
Therefore your point is invalid not because of its content, but because it comes from a racist source.
I thought Morgan Freeman was mad at him or something.
Freeman said Obama isn't the first black president.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.c.....ent-345661
Though you can bet that Freeman won't be voting for that cracker Romney.
please. Every time a supporter claims to be mad at Obama for something, it is becoming a hint that the individual is about to cut a check.
From the North Korea link:
The North suffered a famine in the 1990s, when Kim Jong-un's father ruled, and its economy was devastated by the collapse of the Soviet Union, a major backer. It has been almost completely isolated by international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programmes.
That's some Obama-level excuse-making there. Kudos.
Yeah. It's all the fault of the West (as per usual).
The online news was from Pakistan, so it's not surprising.
If you have a famine that kills 20% of your country, you didn't starve them on your own. That took roads for empty grain trucks, collective farms where seeds were dumped in rivers, party commissars running dairies where they were more interested in slogans than milk.

I hope Jong-un whacks a few more generals and they overthrow him.
At least they don't have a trade deficit.
Is anyone else fascinated that North Korea seems like what would happen if a cult took over a country.
And are there any good books/movies about the experience of defector's? Because it must be so weird for them to enter the modern world.
"nothing to envy" by Barbara Demick is very good.
Acquariums of pyongyang is written by a defector, but suffers a bit from translation. IMO, Koreans tend to value a literary style that is too grandiose for western tastes. The subject matter, however, is intriguing regardless of the style.
Christopher Hitchens described NoKo as what would happen if someone approached 1984 as a "how-to" manual.
Hell, there's a game / talk show with them.
I haven't read this book Escape from Camp 14, but the Atlantic article makes it sound fascinating. Horrible, but fascinating.
Cultwise, though, the one that looks most interesting to me (and that I actually want to read) is The Cleanest Race.
I don't see the excuse.
The excuse is implied because that is the entire paragraph, leading me to conclude that these are the primary factors in North Korea's current awful state. Also, the outside events listed are not given any additional context that their government exacerbated them. It's like saying that I'm destitute because the slap bracelet market went belly up. While true, it's a far less accurate picture than saying I stupidly put all of my money into slap bracelets.

The lone Republican on Philadelphia's elections commission alleges a wide range of voter fraud in May's primary election...
It seems to be pretty common knowledge, at least among the election runners I've talked to, that Filthadelphia elections are pretty bad. Apparently they strongly resisted the Commonwealth's attempt to centralize registration for a reason, and it wasn't for the reason that Harrisburg fucks up everything it does, either.
Harrisburg is 4 months behind processing gun registrations, so I have to carry my record of sale with me everywhere I go. Otherwise, when any cop who stops me runs the serial number and gets "unregistered", things will go badly.

Is that Sara Jessica Parker in Dirty Dancing?
*shudders*
mmmm, good imagery. Despite Restoras' hating.
SJP looks like a horse, or an old shoe. I can't tell which.
How about an old horseshoe?
That was just stupid. People love animals, generally (see, e.g., outrage over cop-shoots-dog).
This scans as mockery or an attack on the horse, or on people who have horses/pets. Just stupid.
Rove: Obama Gets Down and Dirty
The president's campaign puts out a steady stream of smears against Mitt Romney, including an insinuation that he committed a felony in an SEC filing.
http://online.wsj.com/article/.....on_LEADTop
"You might be an economic illiterate if you believe that roads create business success instead of the other way around." - Rand Paul
Once you get past the Foxworthian wording, that's great.
Understood it I did
you know, Jeff could start a whole new "you might be..." tour just by using Obamaisms.
And Foxworthy's would be the only job created or saved by Obama.
"If you think there are 57 states..."
Don't you know, all you have to do to make places like Burkino Faso wealthy is to build some roads, provide minimum wages and provide free doctors, the place will be wealthy in no time !
I have never been a fan of Rand's philosophy or her novels. But I have always maintained she was a great observer of politics and society and one hell of a futurist. Really better than Orwell. Rand, unlike Orwell, never fell for the Top Men fallacy of socialism. And someone posted this quote for Atlas Shrugged that really proves the point.
"He didn't invent iron ore and blast furnaces, did he?"
"Who?"
"Rearden. He didn't invent smelting and chemistry and air compression. He couldn't have invented his Metal but for thousands and thousands of other people. His Metal! Why does he think it's his? Why does he think it's his invention? Everybody uses the work of everybody else. Nobody ever invents anything."
She said, puzzled, "But the iron ore and all those other things were there all the time. Why didn't anybody else make that Metal, but Mr. Rearden did?"
http://pointsandfigures.com/20.....s-reality/
AS has a lot of great moments that resonate today, like Rand was predicting the future.
The problem is that they're maybe 5% of the book and the other 95% is badly written crap.
Personally, I think if you just track down the John Galt radio address and read that, you get the gist of it.
I think that Francisco's money speech is the best part of the book.
Same here.
I'll have to re-read that part. Any idea what chapter?
I'm not sure where it is in the book, but here's a link to it.
http://capitalismmagazine.com/.....ey-speech/
I think it's the best part, too, along with the conversation Dagny has with the former Twentieth Century Motor Company employee--unlike a lot of AS, the d'Anconia's speech is an excellent distillation on the role of money in society, and Rand didn't waste pages upon pages making the same point over and over, like the Galt speech.
And d'Anconia's money speech.
Goddammit.
The prose isn't really that bad.
It's just that she wrote from a sensibility that essentially denied the entire history of 20th century literary fashion.
Nobody complains about the prose or characterization in Candide.
"Man, the characters in Candide are cardboard cutouts! Why don't we get more inside their minds, like Updike characters?"
That is a fair point. The problem is that her philosophy was kind of warmed over Nietzschean romanticism. And she was never as much fun to read as Nietzsche.
as much fun to read as Nietzsche
I'm gonna file that under 'sentences I never thought I'd hear'.
Nietzsche is very fun to read. Read the anagrams in Beyond Good and Evil sometime. They are great.
Apples and oranges. His aphorisms (ahem) are fun to read, sure. But try to get through more than one book of Also Sprach Zarathustra.
Someone needs to Princess Bride that thing.
The scum in power are doing an increasingly good job of trying to sound like Atlas Shrugged villains, certainly.
But I don't think Orwell was really a Top Man sort of socialist. Wasn't he a supporter of one of the anarchist-type socialist factions in Spain? And it's hard to read 1984 and Animal Farm as supporting Top Men.
And, as much as it pains me, Orwell's socialism came from the very interesting place of Down and Out in Pairs and London.
Still, let me say this: Orwell's nonfiction (such as Road to Catalonia) is much better than his fiction.
He died a socialist. Orwell honestly believed that socialism was the right way. You just had to get the right people in charge. It is hard to read 1984 and square it with Orwell's committed socialism. But he really did believe in Top Men running things.
Nah I think if you read his essays from the island he gets that it will never work, but he still supports it.
He gets that it will never work but still supports it. Once again, you can't square his support of socialism with the rest of this writings. I think at heart he still supported it because somewhere in his English school boy soul he believed the right top men really could be found.
Well, his writings are some of the most effective anti-socialist writings out there, so I forgive him.
Interesting. Certainly the English do/did love to beleive that their public schools and universities produced Top Men. So why not have them running things - since they were already?
I think Orwell and a lot of British socialists were heavily influenced by the class system of that country and World War 1. Whenever I watch those British period dramas- the Downton Abbey's and the Upstairs Downstairs- that deal with the World War 1 and its aftermath period, I go, "Yeah, I get why they supported the Labour Party"
One of the best things I've read on the other side of this is Parade's End, which, since it's about a million pages long (and by F.M. Ford), far fewer people will ever read than will read anything by Orwell. But it's well worth it. The main character is an incredibly interesting figure: he is a Top Man (in all senses of the term), but he's a Tory who sees both the insurmountability of socialist calculation problems and the fact that other than him, there really aren't any actual Top Men. (That is to say, he is a powerful and important member of the landed gentry who has a very good conscience and realizes that he is virtually alone among the elite, and that the country is fairly doomed.)
It's also among the best things I've ever read about WWI.
It is hard to read 1984 and square it with Orwell's committed socialism.
It is easy to do that, particularly if you don't read The Road To Serfdom beforehand.
He flat out said both that he hated communism, supported democratic socialism and that democratic socialism would never work (implying it would trend towards authoritarianism).
Well the 20th Century certainly bore that out.
There's the well-known Zeno Paradox, which goes like this: In order for me to walk across the street, first I have to walk halfway across the street. And in order for me to walk halfway across the street, I have to walk a quarter of the way across the street. And before I walk a quarter of the way across the street, I have to walk an eighth of the way across the street, and so on to infinity. So obviously I can never walk across the street.
The Obama paradox: In order for you to build that business, somebody else had to build a business that sold you things to build that business. And somebody had to build a business to sell that business things to build that business before you could build your business, and somebody had to build a business to sell that business things, and so on. So pay the fuck up before I throw you in prison.
This is a winner!
It's funny that the "you didn't build it" line came from an asshole who is rumored to be very petty regarding receiving credit for the smallest political ideas discussed at the White House. also, it's pretty brazen to talk shit like that after receiving the Nobel for absolutely nothing.
It's funny that the "you didn't build it" line came from an asshole who is rumored to be very petty regarding receiving credit for the smallest political ideas discussed at the White House.
I've got the Steve Jobs bio on audiobook, and it mentions this same thing. Apparently, people would come to Jobs with ideas, and he'd initially dismiss them as stupid or unworkable. Then, in board meetings weeks later, he'd repeat the same idea and pawn it off as his own.
I think the basic point, which you illustrated, is that people with massive egos are loath to give anyone else credit for their own ideas and accomplishments, because the egotist sees it as diminishing themselves by comparison.
Kim Jung Un was given the title of marshall, the highest rank in the army, after he sacked the army chief in a move to consolidate power.
"Could you say Marshal instead of Light of the Sun? It's just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I'd appreciate it."
Nice.

Romney and Obama in a dead heat among registered voters. And this after Obama has outspent Romney 4-1 in that last few months.
I can't really see anything changing for Obama at this point.
Obama's been stuck in the 44-46% range all year long. Add in a 4-5% Bradley effect and maybe the country as a whole isn't a dumb as I think.
If the economy suddenly improves/deteriorates, you'll see his numbers correlate positively.
Look for deterioration.
And after the economy is completely trashed and BO makes rhetorical blunder after rhetorical blunder...
You can spin it either way. I'm floored by the apparent fact that half of the US thinks BO deserves another term. There is no explanation other than that they're idiots, sorry.
There is no explanation other than that they're idiots, sorry.
Why do you think there is another explanation?
OK, you could convince me with "they're amoral fuckwits." too.
maybe next they'll start bitching because Romney's lack of spending is hurting Obama.. then they'll force the cheaper spender to spend more... Money! It's not fair!!
The Vietnamese clearly programmed McCain to be an Islamofacist deep infiltrator. The unequivocal proof? Right before that speech he got a call from someone telling him to play a game of backgammon.
I thought his trigger word was teabag.
This is a ridiculously fucked-up local story. Some poor dipshit went to a pig's 4th of July party last year, and the pig thought he stole something, so the pig followed him home and executed him.
The pig was let off the hook by a grand jury, of course, but at least now the pig's partner just got acquitted of dereliction of duty for not helping in the execution. So that's good, maybe, I guess?
That is the most fucked up thing I have ever read.
This is why "Shall Not Be Infringed" is in the mutha-fuckin' Constitution.
what? i go to party, officer thinks i stole something, comes to my home and shoots me. and a 2nd officer is faulted for not helping?
Lesson learned: if you're invited to a pig's Independence Day party, politely decline.
It just might save your life.
Seriously. Treat them just like you would a Mafia capo. Be polite, be nice, but never have anything to do with them.
Oh, okay then. Murder away!
Yup. Just like that guy who armed himself before answering his door at one thirty in the morning deserved to be executed.
Dunphy said so.
Apparently a cop can actually get fired for calling someone 'monday', though.
Well, to be fair, he was a 'moron' and 'idiot' as well. So, well, why wouldn't you empty your magazine at someome like that?
You missed Gojira and I come *this* close to getting dunphy to admit he busts people for drug possession.
You missed Gojira and I come *this* close to getting dunphy to admit he busts people for drug possession.
Like any cop, I'm sure that he busts anyone who doesn't show sufficient respect. Even if he has to make shit up.
And, like any cop, if he likes you (meaning you worship the uniform) he'll find a way to go easy on you.
Cops are cops.
I liked the part about how you can tell a good cop by all the times he harasses people for what turns out to be no good reason.
Yes, apparently if you perform 10,000 Terry stops and none of them result in a charged crime, you're doing your job correctly. Who knew that failure = success?
I thought the second comment was spot-on:
Well, duh, because cops aren't Little People. What would be the purpose in being a police officer if you had to act like Little People?
I wasn't aware it was illegal to go to someone's house and confront them about a suspected theft.
Stupid, perhaps, but not illegal.
In Ohio, a self-defense claim is invalid if you do anything to initiate the situation or fail to retreat.
anything to initiate the situation
That would be unusual; usually the exception is if you initiate the altercation itself.
If someone comes to your door selling vacuum cleaners and you try to kill them, they do still have a right to self-defense.
Tulpa, you have outdone yourself in the art of strawman-building with that one. It's a modern art masterpiece.
How does "anything to initiate the situation" apply to what Cranska is said to have done, but not to the vacuum cleaner salesman?
It's not a strawman if you're quoting what someone says.
The only thing keeping me from breaking my fist against the wall is picturing, as vividly as I can, smashing that fuck's face with a brick until there's nothing left but a puddle of bloody goo.
Fucking animal.
Here's a link to a story with acutal details of the shooting. If the officer is telling the truth it sounds legit. Which is a big if, of course, but not ipso facto absurd.
I don't see the part where he tried to retreat from the situation HE STARTED at SOMEBODY ELSE'S HOME.
How does one start a situation?
And yes, there aren't details and he could be lying.

Yes, that was me. I got the new edition of The Baffler in the mail this week. The above is the Deep Thought of the Left.
"The lone Republican on Philadelphia's elections commission alleges a wide range of voter fraud in May's primary election"
Or as it's known to the locals, "democracy."
It's Philadelphia and you're a Democrat. You're going to win with or without voter fraud.
Philadelphia politicians don't cheat to win. they cheat for the love of the Game.
They're just running up the score at this point.
It turns out that the asshole who yelled a racial slur at Boston Red Sox player Carl Crawford recently at a minor league rehab game in Manchester, NH was an off-duty Massachusetts cop.
Before I read this story I had no idea that the word "Monday" could be used as a racial epithet.
Sports fans can be so classy. Gald it was a cop, though - I'm sure he didn't mean it.
I've never heard that term either. This makes Garfield mighty racist.
The word can be used as a derogatory term for blacks, and is often associated with Mondays being one of the least-liked days of the week.
HyR, you've earned your keep today.
Wait, is *that* racist?
So we've reached a point where everything associated with something that a lot of people don't really like is racist? Seriously, whoever thinks up this shit has to have some deep rooted race issues to project this on everyone.
You've never been to Boston, have you? I can assure you, it's a bona-fide slur.
This is too confusing for an old dude. Why can't people just call a spade a spade?
"Monday, Monday, can't trust that day ...."
"Tell me why...
I don't like Mondays..."
[At a Sunday game]
"Hey, tomorrow!"
Kill any citizen at will, but call someone 'Monday'? That shit will get you fired. We truly live in a fucking asylum.
New England is wildly racist. Look at the difference in treatment between Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkolis. Both players quit on the Red Sox because they were angry at management only to turn back into all stars right after they forced the trade. Yet, Boston hated Ramirez and still loves Youkolis. The only difference between the two, other than the fact that Ramirez did a hell of a lot more for the Red Sox, is one is black and one is white.
The best part of Youkolis getting traded was Obama getting booed at the Boston Symphony or Opera or whatever the hell it was.
I am a Yankee fan and dislike the Red Sox. But there are plenty of Red Sox players I respect and like. I love Jacoby Ellsbury. I like Manny. Roids or not, he was the best right handed hitter since DiMaggio. That guy was awesome. But I have always hated Youkolis. What a joyless red ass whiny bastard that guy his.
I have always liked Manny on top of being a great hitter he's like a 12 year old out there.
I loved Manny. Biggest mistake in Yankee history was signing Bernie Williams instead of Manny. Manny grew up in the Bronx. He wanted to come to the Yankees. Change that signing and the Yankees win at least two more World Series and the Red Sox are going on 100 years without a title.
I love ya man, but leave the sports tribalism behind. Free yourself. I understand it isn't easy but you can do it if you try.
We are hard wired to be tribal Restoras. You have to indulge it some way. And sports is about as harmless as anything.
Biggest mistake in Yankee history was signing Bernie Williams instead of Manny.
That didn't even happen; Bernie signed two years before Manny hit the market. The Yankees signed Mussina instead of Ramirez which, in the context of the team, was absolutely the right move. The mid 2000's Yanks were beyond terrible at run prevention; adding Manny and subtracting Moose would have only made things worse (and I say this as a fellow Yankee fan that's also an unabashed Manny lover). Hell, they even got a reasonable facsimile (Sheffield) and were still unable to get over the hump.
I find it weird that, despite playing in the sports hype capital of America, Bernie Williams might be the most criminally underrated player of his era. From '96 - '03 there's basically a 1 win per season difference between Bernie and Manny, and Bernie was probably better in the playoffs thanks to his passable defense.
Bernie was great. But he went downhill fast. the last contract was a mistake.
The last 3 years of his big contract weren't pretty, but that was the brass's fault for sticking him in CF instead of moving him to right or DH, making his inability to play defense practically outweigh the fact that he was still an effective, though no longer great, hitter.
They had to keep the DH spot open for all of the worthless fat guys they kept signing in hopes of replacing Tino Martinez. It is no coincidence that they stopped winning championships when Martinez retired and won one when they finally signed a good defensive first baseman. First base is really an underrated defensive position. You can't just put some fat guy out there who walks a lot and appeals to money ball degenerates.
First base is really an underrated defensive position.
As a Colorado Rockies fan, I can say with confidence that having Todd Helton at the position has probably saved that team from a Cleveland Spiders-type of fate during most of his career.
You can't just put some fat guy out there who walks a lot and appeals to money ball degenerates.
Hey, I resemble that remark!
I actually agree, though; taking a cursory look at the last 20 Series winners I would say that the only ones employing outright butchers are the Phillies, White Sox, and Braves. I also have memories of Johnny Helmet turning an otherwise above average Mets infield into an error-proof machine. Run prevention is important even, and I'm the glad the Yankees now acknowledge this for 7.5/9 positions on the field.
"the best right handed hitter since DiMaggio."
Ever heard of Willie Mays, or Hank Aaron? Let alone Frank Thomas, Mark McGwire, Dick Allen, or Frank Robinson?
David Ortiz is the most beloved player in the history of the franchise. More than Fisk. More than Ted Williams (who was actually disliked for most of his career).
The fans tend to hate players who are assholes (Mo Vaughn, Williams), flakes and headcases (Ramirez), and don't perform on big contracts (Daisuke, Lackey, Crawford so far).
But Ortiz looks like Shrek. They don't consider him a black person. I think Red Sox fans are just losers. If Yourkilis had pulled that whinny act with the Yankees, Yankee fans would have destroyed him. I lost a lot of respect for Red Sox fans when they sucked up to him last weekend.
Jeez, now you are just being a douche.
I hate Youkilis. That shaved Sasquatch looking ugly bastard. He looks like a squirrel died fucking his throat. He never once smiled playing the game. I just can't stand him.
I guess that's fine. I can't stand A-Rod.
I don't like A-Rod either. My father and I refer to him as worthless. And he really is. Why the Steinbreners threw all of that money at him is beyond me.
I swear, if I were a major league pitcher I'd throw at that smug face of his with my best heat, every goddam time.
A-Rod still has a chance to finish his career as the all-time home run leader.
It's bizarre. He's basically Babe Ruth or Willie Mays by the numbers, but you watch him play every day and it's like he has no impact.
In 1920, Babe Ruth hit more home runs than any other team (besides the Yankees, obviously) in the American League and all but one other team in major league baseball. Rodriguez -- or Bonds, for that matter -- isn't even in the same league as Ruth as a home run hitter, totals be damned.
Forget home runs Nightelf. Look at Ruth's OPS sometime. He had multiple seasons where his OPS was over 1.2. To put that in perspective, Willie Mays never had a season of 1.2 OPS.
Mays never had a season of 1.1 OPS
Oh, it's insane, I just used homeruns because Fluffy mentioned all-time home run leader.
Babe Ruth lapped the frickin' field as far as I am concerned.
In 1920, Babe Ruth hit more home runs than any other team
And he did it without the benefit of "juice", too.
The only player that approached Ruth levels IRT home run ability was Ken Griffey, Jr. Unfortunately, injuries kept him from shattering Hank Aaron's record.*
*Barry Bonds wouldn't have kept pace with Junior.
The thing about Youk is that he's extremely intense, and is a bad sport.
When a guy like that is playing well, he's the Best Playah Evah.
He shouted "Fuck!" every time he made an out. Every time. And meant it. The rage at every out was palpable. I expected shit to be destroyed in the dugout after every groundout.
And when times are good, you look at that guy and say, "Look at the focus! The determination! The hustle! The intensity!"
But when the team is .500 and the manager doesn't like him, you say, "Man, he's a cancer. He's bringing the team down. He's got to go."
He didn't change. The team circumstances changed.
I had always known that Youkolis was known as a real shit to other players. You are right his act was okay on a winning team.
Here is my question. Last year when the Red Sox were pissing away their season on beer and chicken, where the hell was Youk? He had been on the championship teams. He had credibility to stand up. He never did. I think he is just a selfish turd bag.
Wow John, you'd think Youk was a liberal the way you're going after him.
He's widely considered to be the "snitch" that leaked the story to the media. That's why there was clubhouse friction between him and Beckett. It's also part of the reason that Sox fans still like him: management sided with guys who didn't want to play against him.
No true racist!
No, Boston is wildly racist. Boston is part of New England, but New England is more than Boston.
Oh look! More stupid memes!
That's not the only difference.
Yuklis hustled. Manny dialed it in.
Youklis had passion. Manny didn't seem to care.
I'm sure if you looked hard enough, you could find a handful of Massholes who hated Manny because he was black. But they would be a rarity.
Yuklis hustled
He didn't hustle after Valentine hurt his delicate feelings. He flat out quit and stopped hustling until he got a trade.
For God's sake will someone please spell his name correctly?
Y-O-U-K-I-L-I-S
I'm having Cal Ripkin and Greg Maddox flashbacks from the 90s.
Youkilis is the Mommar Gadafi (Quadafi, Qaddafi, Ghadafi, whatever) of Major League Baseball.
At least Youk, for the most part, showed up to play every day. I think that's why Red Sox fan like him more than Manny - he is percieved to be a grinder and a working man, whereas Manny, as awesome a hitter as he was, was a complete flake.
But he stopped being that when he decided he wanted out.
Maybe. But if the new boss doesn't like you, you probably realize your days are numbered. Given the make-up of the line-up, and the performance of Middlebrooks, he may have seen the writing on the all and purposely dogged it. Or, he may have been stressed/distracted about the possibility of being traded and couldn't focus like he had before. I don't know - I'm not a professional ball player so it's all just speculation. Personally, I'm happy to have watched him (and Manny) play and make great contributions over the years.
I should hate Manny considering that he was such a Yankee killer all of those years. But I can't help but love the guy. He had such a beautiful swing. You just had to enjoy watching him play the game.
Or maybe he was too busy banging Tom Brady's sister to care about Baseball anymore, but now that he's out of town he's got his focus back since he doesn't see her quite as often.
Youk is as dumb as a thought. You don't bang Tom Brady's sister. You bang Tom Brady's sister in law.
Unless he's already grooming his future kids for professional sports.
The core of his intensity was his bad sportsmanship.
That was the thing.
The kid in little league who is the worst sport is also the kid who is playing his guts out. Because he's completely pissed at every out and every loss.
But when the kid gets mad at his manager, look out.
Valentine insulted him. Valentine's statement was actually kind of absurd, to anyone who follows the team even distantly.
So Valentine became the object of the bad sportsmanship.
The fans didn't turn against Youkilis because they hate Valentine more. They look at what happened and say, "That bum Valentine cut the legs out from under the hardest worker the team had!"
Yeah, I could have seen the "physically" part of the comment, since Youk was underperforming. But "mentally"? You've got a bunch of pitchers still on the team that got so fat off of fried chicken they couldn't hold onto a double digit game lead over a month. One of them hasn't taken ownership of that and even bitched about someone "snitching" on him. If you're going to start calling out your players for not trying, maybe start with that guy!
The only difference between the two, other than the fact that Ramirez did a hell of a lot more for the Red Sox, is one is black and one is white.
Kevin Youkilis is black??
Now that line from Office Space makes way more sense: "Got a case of the Mondays?"
I never heard of it, either. And I would have thought I knew every ethnic slur there was.
My defense would be that I heard somebody use it once in a bar and thought it meant "asshole".
"Monday" is in the Racial Slur Database. No information on the history of it. I've never heard it either.
Well, that's because you are an ill-bred Sunday.
"Before I read this story I had no idea that the word 'Monday' could be used as a racial epithet."
That's probably because you're unfamiliar with the Racial Slur Database. Never get caught out again with an unfamiliar slur!

and SugarFree beats me to it.
I'm kind of surprised by how many there are for whites. And yet we're the only people who are capable of racism.
I see "Canadian" is on there as well.
They really do keep track of everything these days.
It wasn't fair for Tuesday to get all the fun.
It turns out that the asshole who yelled a racial slur at Boston Red Sox player Carl Crawford recently at a minor league rehab game in Manchester, NH was an off-duty Massachusetts cop.
And nothing else happened. Thank God that racist cop got to go home safely to his family.
cop angle aside, every time I read about a genuinely race-based incident - not the ginned up type - can't help but notice the location. It is usually one of those states not called southern. While we have our share of idiots, the south holds no exclusivity on boorishness.
In the South, blacks and whites historically intermingled far more than here in the North.
We had race riots in the 1980's when the state desegregated public housing.
The difference between racism in the south and the north can be summed up this way.
In the south a white person would never invite a black man to a babr-b-que but wouldn't think twice about hiring him.
In the north a white person would never hire a black man but wouldn't think twice about inviting him to a clambake.
The racism is still there in both places but in the south it is easier for blacks and whites to work side by side, they just don't socialize. In the north they can socialize but they do not trust each other enough to work together.
Obviously this is somewhat changing as racism becomes less and less of a force in our culture but you can still see remnants of it if you look.
I attend Fisher Cats games quite often. He's lucky I wasn't there with my daughter, because I would have kicked his ass into next Monday and you'd be reading about me in the papers.

Huh. I agree with wholeheartedly Prudie's comments (for once). This wife sounds like a mental case. Run, dude! Run fast and far!
Six years ago, when we were in our early 20s and had just fallen in love, after a night of partying and drinking, he woke me up in the middle of the night and started to have sex with me. I was dozing and still drunk and, yes, I took my panties off myself. But when I realized that it was not OK for him to make advances on me in my state, I pushed him away and ran out. He later felt so bad he wanted turn himself in for rape.
Dear Prudence
Well you can only drink so much. You can only screw so much. Who other than Mormon couples doesn't have drunken half conscious sex once in a while?
You know, I have been married for 30 years, and I can honestly say I have never, ever required my husband to ask for my specific, spoken consent. One of the reasons I got married was because I trust my partner enough to give a blanket consent, including drunken/ mostly-asleep sex. I am seriously boggled that there are committed couples that apparently revolve their sex life around consent issues.
It shows a massive lack of intamacy and understanding. If you don't know your spouse well enough to just understand when they really want to do it and when they really do want to just go to bed, you really don't know them at any deep level. That is really sad when you think about it.
No, the fucked-up part is that she did want to do it, but then she remembered her Feminism 101 lesson that consent can never be given when drunk, and she got drier than a desert. It's no different than the Catholic schoolgirl only letting you put the tip in before she thinks of the nuns beating her for lust and makes you pull out.
That is really fucked up. Feminists have so screwed two generations of women now.
the part about "took my panties off myself" sounds a lot like consent but I'm just a man. More amazing is we are asked to believe that in her groggy, half-drunk half-asleep state, this woman was able to formulate thoughts about how her husband should not be making advances on her in her state. WTF?
If that's rape, then I'm charging my wife with theft for stealing the covers on all the other nights.
Awesome
How will Jezebel respond to this? You know they will.
They will say her being drunk invalidates her consent.
HL, you could simplify that so much more easily: They will say he is wrong because he is a man.
Hell, her being female invalidates her consent, as all heteronormative sex is rape given the vast power dichotomy between the patriarchy and feminist sensibilities.
I accept your answer as it is the most obtuse.
Thank you. Can I haz wimmen's studies grant?
Even sober, her consent is vitiated by the dominance of the patriarchy.

The State Department's newest counterterrorism project, "Viral Peace," aims to troll extremists on the internet to discourage others from being radicalized.
This explains a lot. We're onto you, Mary. Although I doubt it's working here.
Also, "Viral Peace"? Who the fuck comes up with this shit? I think they could do better with a random word generator to come up with names for operations. Maybe anon-bot has some spare clock cycles it could loan out to them.
Maybe they could sugarfree all their bomb making links?

Holy fucking shit Salon showed a bit of self awareness in a paragraph:
Aaron Sorkin is why people hate liberals. He's a smug, condescending know-it-all who isn't as smart as he thinks he is. His feints toward open-mindedness are transparently phony, he mistakes his opinion for common sense, and he's preachy. Sorkin has spent years fueling the delusional self-regard of well-educated liberals. He might be more responsible than anyone else for the anti-democratic "everyone would agree with us if they weren't all so stupid" attitude of the contemporary progressive movement. And age is not improving him.
http://www.salon.com/2012/07/1.....frivolity/
Wow. I bet there is some massive pearl clutching going on in the comments.
and the comments section turns, predictably, into 1) a session of defending Sorkin against all charges and 2) dragging Rush into the discussion as the conservative ballast to bombast.
It always comes back to Limbaugh with those people doesn't it? He really is Goldstein to them.
everyone would agree with us if they weren't all so stupid
Libertarians have that same attitude, only we're right to have it. The liberals are delusional.
Also, we generally don't espouse how great democracy is. To us, it is a means to an end, not an end.
Most of us are well aware democracy is kind of a shitty system, but like old Winston C. noted, it's the best one we've got.
I really don't. Like most everyone else, my experiences and background have much more to do with my beliefs than any innate intelligence I have or lack.
Now maybe those experiences and background have something to do with whatever intelligence I have or lack, but that's not really the same thing.

Game over. We lost.
Americans are equally likely to say it is extremely or very important to have federal government programs that address the health risks associated with obesity (57%) and smoking (55%), despite their higher level of concern about obesity. Slightly fewer say programs addressing excessive alcohol consumption are extremely or very important (48%).
because backing away from the table and getting a little exercise is simply too much to ask of the average American. The game is lost when people believe that self-inflicted outcomes like health problems from things like smoking or being overweight can only be solved with govt.
And that is why there will be no revolution where libertarians come out the winners.
Off to Mars....
I literally think this (not Mars, but space colonization in general) is humanity's only hope for liberty.
A bit OT, but The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton hits on this. It's a big soap opera type of work, but a central part is humanity heading out and colonizing worlds how they want while telling other people to bugger off.
If I can remember to, I'll have to check it out.
If so many people are so concerned about obesity, why the hell are so many of them fat? How about healing thyself first?
If so many people are so concerned about obesity, why the hell are so many of them fat? How about healing thyself first?
heal thyself is not a viable option in the realm of Big Nanny. If govt cannot cause you to lose weight, it cannot be done.
Yeah...I don't think this is so much about "Help me, Obi-wan; you're my only hope" so much as it's a "there oughta be a law", or "Well, if I'm on the hook for medical bills, some one is gonna, By God, remove risks!"...maybe also a bit of, "THEY need help, and it's not like I have the authority to just go in make them do what they should-but the gov't. can!"
Not that any of it is proper, but I think that's the motivation for this.
It's always easier to have Big Brother fix shit you don't like than it is to try to effect change yourself. Wouldn't want to fail, now.
Goes back to my point that we have become so pathetic we don't even bother to live by our own principles when we are scolding. Cotton Mather was a moral scold, but no one ever caught him in a wife swapping ring. No one ever saw Carrie Nation taking a drink or William Jennings Bryan speculating on gold. For all of their faults, the scolds of the past at least took their own medicine. Now they don't even do that.
See, here's why they are hypocrites. They want to force other people onto healthy lifestyles if they have to pay for their medical bills, but they would flip their shit if insurance companies did the same thing.
We lost until Mr. and Mrs. America realize that the laws don't say "everyone except Mr. and Mrs. America must eat healthy and exercise daily and stop drinking and smoking." When the foot comes down on their neck they might have a change of heart.
Nope. They'll just shrug and say "oh well, this is the price we pay for civilization" or some such horse shit.

if anyone thinks that hemp will present any tax revenue it will need to be sold in some retail product format that cannot be usurped in the home.
The existence of homebrewing is why neither the Feds nor the state make any money off of beer.
Stupid statement.
Rough estimate, the Feds collect about $1.7B in beer excise tax each year.
Double my estimate, that is roughly what ABI paid.
So, about $3.5B total.
And this one. These people really exist, huh?
So much for "grow your own". God I hate the "tax it, regulate it" crowd.
A fundmental observation: Most Americans are lazy. Grow your own or a buy a pack of jays down at the Quickie Mart? I know which way I'm betting the average lumpy prole will go. Quikcie Mart, et al, are gonna make bank.
Yep. It would be similar to homebrew beer. Not uncommon, but still a hobbyist thing. The vast majority would use store bought.
Those numbers are probably optimistic, since in practice recreational marijuana is grown from more expensive transplanted clones rather than from seeds
Maybe as measured in dollars. I'd bet most marijuana by weight is grown outdoors. If weed was legal much of it would be grown by amateurs for personal consumption (assuming that was legal too). It is much more like cultivating tomatoes than tobacco or tea.
They'd likely treat it like beer in that you'd be free to produce up to an arbitrary amount per year as long as you didn't sell it, because of taxes.
You can sell tomatoes at a farm stand only because they're not taxed $250/lb, as marijuana likely would be.
A week's worth of weed for the heaviest consumer is a lot smaller and lighter than a case or 2 of beer.Government is greedy. If legal I could see a tax of more like $10 a gram.
You could actually tax marijuana at a pretty high rate and still be competitive against the black market.
Only if there was a shit-ton of enforcement to suppress that black market. I suppose you could tax seeds and cloned starter plants. Growing the shit is too easy and the market wouldn't be all high potency anyways.
Not necessarily. People have gardens and brew their own beer. Yet there seems to no shortage of demand for vegetables and beer. Most people are going to be willing to pay a premium to avoid dealing with pot head dealers or the hassle of growing the stuff yourself.
While people give away their homebrewed beer or take it to parties, its just not sold. There is no point, with a legal market and the hammer of the Feds that would come down on you so hard if you were caught selling it.
Im sure there is some black market for beer, but it is tiny.
The reason is, beer is cheap. It pot was as cheap as suggested above, there would be no reason for a black market, even after an excise tax is added. You could grow your own, but that is work. Most people would just buy it.
Both making beer and growing vegetables is, as far as I have been informed, much more difficult than growing marijuana.
*are* Jesus I cannot even write any more.
I think growing good marijuana, as opposed to headache inducing ditch weed, is actually more difficult than ordinary gardening. The legal stuff would have be of high quality. But I still think most people would pay a decent tax in return for buying something from a known source and known quantity.
I think growing good marijuana, as opposed to headache inducing ditch weed, is actually more difficult than ordinary gardening.
It's no more difficult than catnip.
Making beer isnt very hard.
Like anything, you get better at it with experience, but my first batch was VERY drinkable.
Not hard at all.
Making beer is easy. Seriously.
If you can boil water and wash dishes, you can make beer.
