Horrific 8.9 Quake, Tsunami Hit Japan
It's this bad:
The above via Andrew Sullivan, who has a bunch of links up. Japanese nuclear plants are on emergency footing. Tsunami waves will be hitting Hawaii any minute, and the west coast of the Americas a few hours later.

This is as horrible as the Friday Funnies.
Why is Sullivan blogging on this? Has he blamed Sarah Palin yet?
It's Global Warming's fault!
Were people able to evacuate before the tsunami?
It doesn't sound like it.
Based on this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi.....pd9-06.jpg I'd say no.

Awesome pictures.
I like the nitwit christer in the comments trying to get people to repent.
That top picture? There's no goddamned way I would be standing anywhere near that crack in the Earth.
It does have a sort of "mouth of hell" look about it.
Was walking through the busiest part of Shibuya, Tokyo when I got a serious case of vertigo, nearly fell over...and then chaos. Was pretty shocking to learn that the center was actually up North, yet still so strong.
Despite carrying video equipment, we just froze and let it happen to us. What do you do in such a situation?
Anyway, all is well back home. Lots of shit fell over, and the cats are still paranoid, but at least I'm not stuck downtown like the suburbanites!
It's hard to describe the feeling of helplessness you get when you're in the middle of an earthquake.
A few years back I was staying on the fourth floor of a hotel in Pasadena when a 5.something hit. I jumped out of bed, ran one way, ran the other, then realized I wasn't going anywhere. There isn't much you can do to improve your situation at that point.
How bad was Shibuya hit? Is it effected by the tsunami? My cousin works at Pink Cow there and haven't heard from her since tsunami hit - very worried!!
I don't know. That cute little girl named Mari from the 2009 flick Babies lives there and I'm getting worried!
Gojira?
You know it's bad when even the Japanese drop their phones and run.
Horrific 8.9 Quake, Tsunami Hit Japan
Goddammit! This was supposed to be our day!
Watching that vid above is heartbreaking - just imagine being that person. Watching the wave just sweep over the land, obliterating the fruits of your labors. Losing your home, your business, your livelihood - everything you own; your entire life - in mere seconds. All swept off the face of the earth.
I suck.
Tsunami waves will be hitting Hawaii any minute
Well, not so much so. I live a couple blocks from the beach, and damned if I was gonna stay up until 3 am for yet another bullshit false alarm that results in "tsunami" waves an inch or two high. We all went to bed, only to be kept up by the government Civil Defense a-holes setting off sirens and roaming around the residential area slightly closer to the beach and yelling at them through bullhorns to evacuate.
No one on my block evacuated, far as I could tell.
Another non-event.
