D.C.-Area Reasonoids: Come Hear Radley Balko Speak on SWAT Teams on Capitol Hill

Reason Senior Editor Radley Balko will speak about SWAT teams on a panel this Thursday at "New Directions DC: A Public Health and Safety Approach to Drug Policy," a conference on Capitol Hill sponsored by the Drug Policy Alliance.

The event is open to the public.

I'm sure it will be a balanced treatment of the issue that includes some coverage of the lives SWAT teams have saved, the release of hostages they've secured, and the great risks the men and women who serve on them take.

During a friend of mine's trial for rape/murder, all they ever talked about was how much that "poor girl" suffered. Eck. I remember one time, he had helped an old, near-blind lady across the street... sure, afterwards he kicked her in the shin and stole her purse, but he *did* help. Why woudln't anyone bring that sort of thing up?... all rape this, murder that... just ridiculous, unfair, and unbalanced.

I don't know why it would, Max, since none of those purported benefits have anything to do with the use of SWAT teams to conduct no-knock drug raids.

You might as well expect a MADD conference on drunk driving to include a session on the good works ambulance drivers do. Hey, its all people driving vehicles, right?
