Headline roughly translated:

Bolivian President Evo Morales says that GMOs (genetically modified crops and animals) are responsible for homosexuality and baldness

The headline kinda says it all.

When you consider that this clown and all the rest of Chavez's buddies are taking over South America with the cheer leading and support of the American left and now the Administration, the story is not so much silly as it is sad.

Chavez's buddies are taking over South America

      They are?

      1. John   15 years ago

They have Bolivia, Venezuela and a sympathetic clown running Brazil. And are doing everything they can to undermine Columbia. Yes they are.

        1. Tulpa   15 years ago

Considering their rampant eminent domain abuse, Columbia deserves to be undermined. Colombia, on the other hand, is undermined by nothing more than our idiotic international drug war.

...and the Democrats running the US, right? You guys are really fighting the good fight against oppressive liberals who don't shrink from giving you health insurance and not torturing anyone.

Where's my free health insurance, bitch?

And assassinations are much more benevolent than torture, that's correct. When was the closing date for Guantanamo btw?

I made the mistake of flipping over to the local college station yesterday afternoon while Democracy Now! was on. The host spent quite a long while fellating Evo Morales for hosting some sort of environmental summit there right now, and for formenting some violence against a Japanese-owned mine. The host informed me that mines causes cancer or something.

"Bolivian President Evo Morales says that GMOs (genetically modified crops and animals) are responsible for homosexuality and baldness"

In related news, American President Barak Obama says that private enterprise (rather than government largess) is responsible for rising costs in the healthcare industry.

I guess politicians tell noble lies in every language.

  17. Ken Shultz   15 years ago

I really don't see this as any crazier than Colin Powell wavin' around phony photos of mobile WMD labs.

Politicians tell lies to try to make people do what they think is best for them. George Bush did it. Barak Obama does it all the time. Al Gore made whole movies of the stuff.

This is what noble lies look like from a distance, when they're directed at peasant farmers and the like, and I guess that looks funny to us.

But chances are you've fallen for something like this yourself somewhere along the line. I'd bet on it.

    1. John   15 years ago

Of course only Colin Powell thought that. Not the entire intelligence community and most of the rest of the world. And it is not like the previous administration didn't say exactly the same thing repeatedly. It is also not like Hussain didn't claim to have such weapons, repeatedly and had used such weapons in the past. All of those dead kurds just had heart attacks or maybe were victims of an industrial accident or something.

      yep no difference there.

      1. Ken Shultz   15 years ago

So you fell for one too? Because your reasons were good? I'd point to the illustrious career of John Bolton, but that wasn't my point, John.

It's been noted since at least Plato that people are easier to govern when they believe what their leaders tell them, regardless of whether it's true.

I suspect Morales really does think the people of Ecuador will be better off if they eat local, non-GMO produce. And whether one leader's lies are more believable than another is beside the point.

Our Presidents have been doing this kind of thing since at least Roosevelt and the adoption of radio. We should never think we're immune.

Barak Obama tells a whopper like this every day. It's easier to see it for what it is when it's directed at peasants, but we are not immune. You fell for one too?

        Don't get fooled again!

        1. John   15 years ago

Ken if you think that the question of Hussain having WMDs was as easily settled in 2002 as the question of GM foods causing homosexuality, you are just being stupid.

You normally post very rational things on here. But like many people on here, you let your anger over Iraq completely overwhelm your intelligence and rationality. You sound like some crazy homeless man living in a dumpster on this topic.

          Sorry, but you do.

          1. Ken Shultz   15 years ago

I can't believe you're makin' me bring out the big link again!

            Posted 9/6/2003 8:10 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nearly seven in 10 Americans believe it is likely that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, says a poll out almost two years after the terrorists' strike against this country.

Sixty-nine percent in a Washington Post poll published Saturday said they believe it is likely the Iraqi leader was personally involved in the attacks carried out by al-Qaeda. A majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents believe it's likely Saddam was involved."

            http://www.usatoday.com/news/w.....iraq_x.htm

That's from months after we invaded Iraq.

You tell me that believing genetically modified crops causes whatever is dumber than believing that Saddam Hussein was somehow responsible for the anthrax attack, and I respond that they're both lies, and they're both being told for the same reasons.

You understand that my point isn't trying to trick people into thinking that GOP politicians lie, unlike the Democrats' politicians, right? Because they're all liars, John, even the ones you believed in.

Don't ever believe anybody just because of what religion or political party they belong to, and certainly don't believe them just because they're telling you something you want to hear or agree with. Never believe anybody because you're afraid, and especially considering the persistence of noble lies--universally--never believe anybody just because they're in a position of authority.

You laugh, but how can you prove this isn't true? It's called "Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone". How is that not a GMO???

With all those hormone and antibiotics being pumped into our food supply, who knows what kinds of effects those might have on human sexuality (or hair growth!)? It's already causing early puberty! http://www.sustainabletable.org/issues/hormones/

And you kind of have to forgive the homophobia, given that Boliva is such a poor country which has been dominated by the patriarchal Catholic dogma and western 'machismo' that's been shoved down the indigenous population's throat. Primitive tribal cultures are naturally much less inhibited about sex. Our sick Judeo-Christian culture simply teaches people to be ashamed of their bodies!

The Bolivian indegenous people are rising up against their corporate capitalist oppressors and resoring a true communal society, based on indigenous principles of community and cooperation, and you have to nitpick their leader for not being specific about the GMOs he's talking about!

    1. heller   15 years ago

It is a GMO. I myself underwent Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone treatment when I was younger. I am neither bald nor homosexual. I have no health problems.

      "It's already causing early puberty!"

Well if you are actually injecting growth hormone into your body, that's basically what it's designed to do. Eating a plant that already consumed the hormone? No, that won't affect you. There's no reason scientifically to think that would have any negative side affects, plus they're is no evidence to suggest these side effects.

Reading the rest of your post, I'm inclined to think you are a troll. So I won't even start to reply to such drivel.

      1. Organic Girl   15 years ago

Eating a plant that already consumed the hormone?

Yeah, um, cows aren't plants, Einstein. We're eating cattle that's been pumped up with all sorts of hormones and antibiotics and Goddess knows what else.

Remember Mad Cow disease? There's just no way to predict what sort of things all these artificial practicies will do. it's not natural for cows to eat meat protein, and it's not natural for cows to give milk every day, or be injected with hormones and live in stalls where they are fed on corn instead of grass.

Who knows? I can't prove that whatever genes they've spliced into the corn won't recombine with the rBGH and turn into hormone transferring frankenstein viruses. Horizontal gene transfer! Anything can happen!

        1. Ray Pew   15 years ago

Yeah, um, cows aren't plants, Einstein. We're eating cattle that's been pumped up with all sorts of hormones and antibiotics and Goddess knows what else.

And the residual levels of such hormones are negligible. Plus the hormones that are used for livestock are not orally active, they must be injected to bypass hepatic deactivation.

Remember Mad Cow disease? There's just no way to predict what sort of things all these artificial practicies will do. it's not natural for cows to eat meat protein, and it's not natural for cows to give milk every day, or be injected with hormones and live in stalls where they are fed on corn instead of grass.

Prions are not unnatural. Read up on kuru. Diseases are natural. What man attempts to do is minimize the risk of transmission.

And the "natural" argument is simplistic nonsense. Houses aren't natural.

Who knows? I can't prove that whatever genes they've spliced into the corn won't recombine with the rBGH and turn into hormone transferring frankenstein viruses. Horizontal gene transfer! Anything can happen!

By your "anything can happen" argument, then it is just as likely that such horrendous problems could occur under natural circumstances. Which no one believes, but somehow we are supposed to believe that "anything can happen" only when man does something.

        2. Zeb   15 years ago

Anything can happen with or without artificial genetic modification. Do you think that there is something magically benign about random mutation?

        3. GILMORE   15 years ago

Why is anyone taking the "rainbow gathering" person seriously?

And RBGH is a hormone, not a GMO, you twit. (arrg! doing it myself).

You might as well refer to every menopausal woman as "genetically modified" for taking estrogen.

          1. Organic Girl   15 years ago

Oh? WTF does the "recombinant" in "recombinant bovine growth hormone" stand for?

It's produced by inserting cow genes into bacteria genomes to make cow hormones. So the bacteria that produce it are GMOs. And who knows, one of those bacteriums might escape and become a super-bug. Jeremy Rifkin warned about this stuff way back in the 80s.

            1. Ray Pew   15 years ago

Oh? WTF does the "recombinant" in "recombinant bovine growth hormone" stand for?

It describes the PROCESS of how the hormone is produced. The genes are not inserted into the cows. The cows are injected with the GH that was produced by a biopharmaceutical process (as opposed to extraction from bovine pituitaries).

It's produced by inserting cow genes into bacteria genomes to make cow hormones. So the bacteria that produce it are GMOs. And who knows, one of those bacteriums might escape and become a super-bug. Jeremy Rifkin warned about this stuff way back in the 80s.

Do you realize how many GMO's are produced every day by university students working on their advanced degrees or by industry? This process has become so easy that even advanved high school students can do it.

              1. Organic Girl   15 years ago

  23. Andrew Sullivan   15 years ago

  24. Paul   15 years ago

Wait, won't this cause the Western liberal head to explode? On the one hand, you've got a revolutionary socialist leader of a South American country railing against GMO's. That's end-to-end Vashon Island win.

But on the other, he's clearly homophobic and believes it's an abberation... caused by GM foods.

    1. Rethuglican Jesus   15 years ago

Organic girl solved this problem for us up thread. It's okay for them to be homophobic because they are just some stupid third world peasants who have been brainwashed by the Catholic church. Liberals only hate the moral failings of white people because minorities by definition are either too stupid or too oppressed to know better.
