Swiss Reject Polanski Bail

Roman Polanski lost his first bid to win his freedom Tuesday as the Swiss Justice Ministry rejected an appeal by the director to be immediately released from prison, an official said.

"We continue to be of the opinion that there is a high risk of flight," said ministry spokesman Folco Galli, explaining the decision.

Polanski's plea deal is a cheap technicality that does not alter the nature of the crime, merely the aspects thereof to which the system will turn a blind eye in exchange for chalking one up in the 'W' column.

I didn't follow any of the Polanski stupidity until now, but I gotta chime in. As a percentage, the number of willingly sexually active 13 year old girls was probably as high in the 1870s as in the 1970s, which is to say that there was no shortage of them.

Unless Polanski tied the girl down and forced the alcohol and drugs into her, she knew what she was taking. And unless the girl was a virgin, she probably knew what was going to happen when she did.

While Polanski may have "raped" her because by law she was too young to give consent, in real life I'll bet she knew EXACTLY what she was doing.

According to the victim's testimony, she was uncomfortable with the situation, said no repeatedly, and asked to leave, but was too afraid to fight back forcibly.
