Meh.
Wow! Best thing from Bok in ages! Still not LOL, but maybe at least smile-quietly-to-oneself.
BTW, am I the only one creeped out by what seems to be a proliferation of online ads lately that invoke The One, as in "Obama wants you to..." (go back to school or whatever)?
Daddy Warbucks is a prick.
I'm going to start prefacing shit with "Obama wants me to..." and "Obama wants you to..." just to fuck with the liberals.
For example, "Obama wants me to kick this puppy."
It'll be fun!

Looks like we have a chick consensus. Can we get federal funding to make the rest of the world agree with us? 😉

Mind if I borrow it too?
Yawn.
I've noticed the "Obama wants..." template, too. Many of the Google news headlines begin with "Obama says...". That pattern's been going on for months.
Suki: Feel free. It's more fun if a lot of people do it 🙂
I'm going to start prefacing shit with "Obama wants me to..." and "Obama wants you to..."
I want you to.
This one got a sort of involuntary splurt from me. Me likey. Solid B.
This cartoon fills me with a vast and terrible indifference.
Passes the Marmaduke and Cathy tests, therefore it it better than average.
Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. There's been a whole lot of that around here lately. Quite disturbing, since I know the people here are smarter than that. For some reason they feel compelled to be stupid because the right wing is going so nuts, either you are stupid or you are liberal. Some people at Reason feel they simply have to be a little stupid otherwise they're just big government liberals.
It's a really bad false dichotomy that some of you really need to get over.
There are plenty of good reasons for kids to stay in school, and there are plenty of reasons for us to not subsidize private religious schools which force Jesus down the throats of their young students, being paid for by taxpayer dollars.
There's no hypocrisy or inconsistency there. I expect more critical thinking from Reason. If reason is going to go half-stupid to prove it's middle-ground nonpartisan, then I will sadly avoid Reason, though I've enjoyed the ride for the past several years.
Drink!
What were we talking about?
Obama wants me to privately school young Czech girls.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Xeones articulated my reaction better than I did.
Bruce,
Yeaaahhhh...I don't want to see your nightmares, guy.
Homer: They ruined all our best names like Bruce and Lance and Julian. Those were the toughest names we had! Now they're just...
John: Queer?
Homer: Yeah, and that's another thing! I resent you people using that
word. That's our word for making fun of you! We need it!
There are plenty of good reasons for kids to stay in school, and there are plenty of reasons for us to not subsidize private religious schools which force Jesus down the throats of their young students, being paid for by taxpayer dollars.
Right. Heaven forbid that a parent get to make that choice, and not you.
Meh. Not even a smirk, but at least you don't have to hunt for the punchline. Did The One say something about vouchers this week and I missed it? I thought health care swallowed up all the billable hours in DC.
Almost amusing
Good Point, but untimely
It's in color anyway
Grade: C-
Bruce,
Not all charter schools are religious, or even truly private. Here in Richmond, VA (shoutout to Suki!) Patrick Henry Charter School is a public charter school, but they're having trouble with the Richmond School Board because the building (an elementary school which they acquired from the city) is not ADA-compliant. Somehow the city school board can gloss over the lack of ADA compliance in their non-charter schools, and ignore the fact that they didn't bring the PH building up to ADA compliance when they owned it. Now that it's a charter school, the school board is holding them to a higher standard than they do with the non-charter public schools.
And I totally agree with you that not one dollar of public funds should go to religious schools, no matter how creatively that money is laundered through vouchers.
And some friendly advice, buddy: When you start defining your audience's needs, as in It's a really bad false dichotomy that some of you really need to get over, then you've lost your audience. Insulting your audience is also not good, ie "foolish," that is if your goal is effective communication.
Oh, and leave the Jesus-bashing behind. I don't want to fund madrassas, yeshivas, or whatever the *&^%$#@! hindus call their schools, either.
Happy Friday, All.
did we just travel back in time? this was an issue oh... say 5 months ago?
This cartoon fills me with a vast and terrible indifference.
The subject of this cartoon seems to fill me with a terrible government vas deferens.
did we just travel back in time?
Did The One say something about vouchers this week and I missed it?
It's about his stay-in-school speech to the kids (recent news) and his consistent position on vouchers.
blah - not funny - sorry guys, years of bad comics has still not lowered my expectations so low that this made me laugh.
As far as creepy Obama stuff - I think the tide is turning. he is failing at healthcare, and calling popular rappers names on twitter. he is about to jump the shark.
More to the point:
Zombieland - pro's and con's: talk amoungst yourselves....

Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
So intellectual inconsistency is the hallmark of a great mind?
Your comments demonstrate your awesomeness, Bruce.
It is exactly the ability to compromise his principles that makes a man noble.
Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
This quote is the hobgoblin of little minds.
How insightful! Foolishness is foolish!
After reading and thinking "nice one, drew blood", I thought "how will they complain about this one?"
Oh.
That's how.
Obama wants me to have a few shots of Jagermeister tonight.
Hahahaha! Both plates are exactly the same, except the room they are in seems to have changed color. Brilliant!
This cartoon fills me with a vast and terrible indifference.
The terrible ennui of Bok. He's dangerous, I tell you.
Lame.
I vote the Friday Funnies be permanently devoted to Lucy promising to let Charlie Brown kick the football.
Obama wants me to agree with P Brooks.
Obama wants me to call this cartoon racist!
(The teacher/administrator is a white guy and the student is not-white with disproportionate ears. [in case you needed me to spell it out] Terribly racist indeed.)
Ok. Now I feel like I am 12.
...
Obama wants me to feel like I am 12!
First of all, I'm surprised nobody realized that was an Emerson quote. Oh well.
And the point is that things that appear inconsistent on the surface are not necessarily inconsistent when you actually THINK about it for a minute.
Whether you're distinguishing something or making an exception, it doesn't necessarily mean you're a hypocrite.
In this specific case, the accusation of inconsistency is so bad it's laughable. If you take Bok's cartoon to its logical conclusion, anyone who opposes vouchers also must oppose children staying in school (or must support children dropping out of school), otherwise they are silly inconsistent hypocrites. That makes no sense.
I dislike Obama greatly for a variety of reasons, numero uno being he is the most spineless, ball-less president this nation has ever seen, and his audacity of compromise is an embarrassment to the presidency. He can't decide anything and he cares more about being liked by his enemies (who will NEVER like him) than getting anything done. So don't accuse me of being one of those libs who diefy Obama - I don't. I just have to point out the stupidity and silliness (in a non-funny way) of this particular cartoon.
Also, don't confuse the motives of the people here who oppose obama for the same reason they opposed bush (i.e. massive spending and increase in government power) with the blatantly racist motives of the teabaggers, Glenn Becks, Bill O'Reillys, and Rush Limbaughs. They hate Obama because he's a stinking nigger. People here don't like Obama because of his big-government programs, etc. Just because you're not a racist don't presume most people yelling in the streets with guns about "getting their country back" are also not racists.
Bruce,
Sorry no one was impressed by your quoting the most oft quoted Emerson quote ever. Also, your logical conclusion is completely flawed. Some A are B =/= all B are A. It is logical, however, to make fun of Obama for saying stay in school and get a good education after taking away some kids in D.C.'s best shot at it.
then I will sadly avoid Reason
Yay.
The cartoon still wasn't funny.
And your last post was so ridiculous I'm going to just assume it was a spoof.
nobody realized that was an Emerson quote
Whatever gave you that idea?
Whatever gave you that idea?
Two years of community college.

Really? You know this for a fact? You know what's in the heart of the tea party protesters? You know what's in the heart of Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh (who have also hated every single democrat to sit in the office of President, not just Obama)? You know what's in the heart of all these people?
Get this straight you pompous windbag, you know shit. I can't stand O'Reilly and Limbaugh, and only occasionally find Beck amusing. However, your arrogance in assuming that you know jack shit about those people is astounding...except for the fact that your side has been saying it, so it must be true, right?
As someone who used to be a liberal not all that long ago, I'm so glad I got a brain instead.
On a meta level I'm pretty sure thats what the Friday "Funnies" are already devoted to.
I can only imagine how proud Emerson would have been knowing that over a century later the most widely known part of his legacy is a quote that is invariably used to justify not making any goddamn sense with an appeal to his intellectual authority.
Bruce wrote: "If you take Bok's cartoon to its logical conclusion, anyone who opposes vouchers also must oppose children staying in school (or must support children dropping out of school), otherwise they are silly inconsistent hypocrites. That makes no sense."
Where I come from, we call that a straw man.
Unless the second sentence was in reference to the first, that is. In that case, I agree completely.
Too blank man, you could have thrown a lot more in there. The man was obviously wounded in some war, maybe Iraq or Afghanistan, so there should be like a recruiter in the background looking at the boy and saying to himself "Yes boy, stay in public school so that your only option will be the military!" Then someone else should be taking a picture of the scene, and it will show him at walmart getting the film developed and the walmart person calls the police and is like 'yeah I have this kiddy porn picture' and it's bc the kid is at juuuust the right height for naughty shit to go down, and the walmart guy is like 'well I had to go to the police, a crime might have occurred!' And maybe somebody in the background could be waving a confederate flag, saying 'Sure, go to public school kid, you'll be worshipping Lincoln in no time! They won't teach you what I know in those gov't approved textbooks!' And Ron Paul somewhere, he is like, "I think the kid deserves a good education" and then reason writers are like "Ron Paul is lying bc he is racist, he wrote newsletters" and then somebody else is like "YOU FUCKING COSMOTARIANS!" Get on that Chip.
My only point is that if you take the Bible straight, as I'm sure many of Reasons readers do, you will see a lot of the Old Testament stuff as absolutely insane. Even some cursory knowledge of Hebrew and doing some mathematics and logic will tell you that you really won't get the full deal by just doing regular skill english reading for those books. In other words, there's more to the books of the Bible than most will ever grasp.

It's just that he, like many types of religionists, seems to take it literally, take it straight...the Bible's books were not written by straight laced divinity students in 3 piece suits who white wash religious beliefs as if God made them with clothes on...the Bible's books were written by people with very different mindsets.
is good
