Sam Smith writes:

The Senate has defunded ACORN due to the misbehavior of a few of its staff. If the Senate had applied the same principle to Wall Street, there never would have been a bailout.

A policy that could get majority support. (Remebering that it took two votes to get TARP passed.)

Hey, this could be a fun game:

If the Senate had applied the same principle to _____________, there never would have been ___________.

  4. Johnny Longtorso   16 years ago

Thus showing the racism of the GOP controlled Congress. What, the Dems are in charge!?!?!?

If the Senate had applied the same principle to Wall Street, there never would have been a bailout.

And if your uncle had tits he'd be your aunt.

  6. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

I have a feeling the defunding is about more than a few bad apples at ACORN.

  7. Xeones   16 years ago

If the Senate had applied the same principle to _____________, there never would have been ___________.

drunken vehicular manslaughter; Ted Kennedy's career

God bless ACORN, out there registering 13 million new voters. They're doing God's work in some of the toughest neighborhoods in America.

  12. Naga Sadow   16 years ago

Even in his absence, joe is threadwinner.

  13. Pink Cosmotarian   16 years ago

    "Raaaaacist!"

  14. Wendell Stamps   16 years ago

I actually had some thoughts on that... ACORN needs to engage in Operation Meth Nazi.

    Oi!

  15. J sub D   16 years ago

    >And if your uncle had tits he'd be your aunt.

The phrase is "If your aunt had balls, she'd be your uncle". Many portly uncles possess tits. I've seen C cups in the locker room for chrissakes.

Classic joe is like old MTV; you forget all the great hits they used to play.

  17. Mike M.   16 years ago

I have a feeling the defunding is about more than a few bad apples at ACORN.

The videos were definitely the straw that broke the camel's back, but yeah, there's a hell of a lot more going on with ACORN than a few rogue employees.

ACORN is just one of a number of organizations that the Rathke brothers and movers and shakers in the democratic party are using to funnel taxpayer money back and forth to each other. It's part of a giant shell game.

  18. Naga Sadow   16 years ago

    *makes retching noise*

Thanks for the image J sub D.

  19. T-Bag   16 years ago

ACORN is a scam organization. Voter fraud convistions, illegally lobbying government with taxpayer money and now consulting for pimps of underage illegals.

    Shut the fucker down.

  20. Your Favorite Queer   16 years ago

"And if your uncle had tits he'd be your aunt."

    Not necessarily.

Classic joe is like old MTV; you forget all the great hits they used to play.

You mean Joe just lip synched recordings and used camera tricks and special effects to try to make it look original?

  22. John   16 years ago

If Joe were still around, I think I would take that comment put up by suger free and post it in response to every Joe comment with the tag "Shut the Fuck Up Joe". Just lonewackoize the bastard.

  23. Abdul   16 years ago

I kind of agree with Joe. When Jesus took five loaves and two fish and fed 5,000 people, people called it God's work.

ACORN took a half dozen actual voters and turned them into 13 million voter registrations, and do people call it a miracle? No, they call it fraud.

  24. John   16 years ago

It is not so much that he defended ACORN. Lots of liberals do. It is the way he defended them. He couldn't just say they are an organization with flaws that still does a lot of good work. Nope, not Joe. He had to put in the "doing God's work part". Joe could never admit flaws with his own side.

  25. Jesse Walker   16 years ago

ACORN took a half dozen actual voters and turned them into 13 million voter registrations, and do people call it a miracle? No, they call it fraud.

I feel another Wall Street comparison coming on...

  26. Attorney   16 years ago

I heard the head of ACORN say on NPR this morning that government support accounts for only 2% of its budget. So, what's the big deal then*?

*From the ACORN supporters' POV, I mean.

  27. Frank   16 years ago

The phrase is "If your aunt had balls, she'd be your uncle". Many portly uncles possess tits. I've seen C cups in the locker room for chrissakes.

    It's a mansiere!

  28. T-Bag   16 years ago

ACORN is overtly racist. For years I have watched them register voters in our central business district. They would only approach black people. White or Asian, they just walk by those people. And the things I would hear them saying!

ACORN employee: Are you registered to vote?
    Person on street: Yes.
ACORN employee: It's a good idea to register again just to be safe.

Fact: If anything is even slightly amiss on the new registration form, the voter gets booted from the voting rolls and only learns of it when they show up to vote.

  30. Enjoy Every Sandwich   16 years ago

Or maybe the lesson is that the feds shouldn't be funding organizations in the first place.

  31. Xeones   16 years ago

Shut the fuck up forever, joe from Lowell.

  32. Rich   16 years ago

If the Senate had applied the same principle to _____________, there never would have been ___________.

    the Senate; the Senate

    Say "Uncle/Aunt"!

  33. P Brooks   16 years ago

But who will stand up for the rights of the oppressed investment bankers, then?

  34. mitch   16 years ago

I am a little surprised at how quickly the Democrats have caved on Van Jones and now on ACORN. Why don't they fight for their friends? They fought for Clinton when his perjury was beyond doubt. Their weakness will only lose them the loyalty of their supporters and make their foes more confident in their attacks.

For the record, I am glad that Obama and the Congressional Democrats act weak, but I don't really understand why they do.

  35. joe   16 years ago

As libertarians shouldn't you be supportive of an organization that helps prostitutes and pimps evade taxes?

  36. $   16 years ago

Classic joe is like old MTV; you forget all the great hits they used to play.

You also forget that it was all REO Speedwagon all the time for years, and you were right to repress that memory.

  37. John   16 years ago

"I am a little surprised at how quickly the Democrats have caved on Van Jones and now on ACORN. Why don't they fight for their friends? They fought for Clinton when his perjury was beyond doubt. Their weakness will only lose them the loyalty of their supporters and make their foes more confident in their attacks."

But Clinton was white. Van Jones is black. And ACORN is a predominantly black organization. Could it be that Democrats are more likly to throw their black allies under the bus? Could it be, I don't know, RACISM????

  38. Rich   16 years ago

Could it be that Democrats are more likly to throw their black allies under the bus? Could it be, I don't know, RACISM????

Only if it's under the back of the bus.

  39. derp   16 years ago

Oh god, Rich, I laughed out loud.

  40. Joette   16 years ago

When I saw the first video, I was willing to accept the "few bad apples" argument. Then I saw the second one, and all the ones that have followed. What I see now is a systemic problem, and the diagnosis isn't good -- for them.

I sincerely hope there are more videos. This is the best entertainment I've had in years. I particularly liked the former madam and self-confessed murderess from San Bernardino, who now says "Aw, I was just funnin'!" If she was, she's missed her calling; why settle for a minimum wage job as an ACORN front-desker when you could be a STAHR!

  41. Kool   16 years ago

If the Senate had applied the same principle to _____________, there never would have been ___________.

    Harry J. Anslinger/The Drug War?
    Randolph Hearst/The Drug War?
    Prosecuting Attys/The Drug War?

  42. Kool   16 years ago

Oh, and fucking classic Joe revisit, NutraSweet. Well played.

  43. Paul   16 years ago

I heard the head of ACORN say on NPR this morning that government support accounts for only 2% of its budget. So, what's the big deal then*?

The other 98% of their budget comes from working girls.

  44. creech   16 years ago

All the players at ACORN have probably already incorporated a new organization or two and will soon be getting tax money. Nothing kills this brand of rent-seeking vampire in a corrupt, two party system.

  45. SugarFree   16 years ago

Thanks, Kool. Mining the archives is always rewarding.

  46. John   16 years ago

No one on here says more nasty things about Jon Stewart than me. But I have to admit, this is pretty damned funny.

"Where were the real reporters on this story? Where the hell were you?! You know who broke this story? These two!!!! You're telling me two kids from the cast of "High School Musical 3" can break this story with a video camera and their grandmothers chinchilla coat and you got NUTHIN'?!!!

I'm a fake journalist and I'm embarrassed these guys scooped me!"

  47. JB   16 years ago

"the misbehavior of a few of its staff"

    Sam Smith is a liar.

He can't possibly know this. From what we have seen, the misbehavior at ACORN is widespread and systemic.

  48. TrickyVic   16 years ago

If the standard is using lies to get taxpayer dollars, Congress is way ahead of ACORN.

  49. vault_dog4   16 years ago

Yeah, aren't libertarians against the wretched tax codes and generally supportive of legalizing prostitution?

I mean, boo on the voter fraud of course, but using the government's own language to protect a capitalist pig entrepreneur seems like a win-win to me in libertarian world.

    JMO

  50. Joette   16 years ago

"I mean, boo on the voter fraud of course, but using the government's own language to protect a capitalist pig entrepreneur seems like a win-win to me in libertarian world."

Leaving aside the hypothetical underaged hookers, if prostitution were legal...then there would be no story here. But it's not and ACORN workers are giving instructions on breaking the law, defrauding the government (which means the taxpayer), and in general displaying an apalling lack of ethics.

  51. John   16 years ago

"I mean, boo on the voter fraud of course, but using the government's own language to protect a capitalist pig entrepreneur seems like a win-win to me in libertarian world.

    JMO"

You might have a point if they weren't trying to start a brothel for underage Central American girls. It is the child sex part that gets them.

  52. Abdul   16 years ago

It is the child sex part that gets them.

Ehh, even in libertopia, tax fraud would be illegal. Sure, we'd have lower taxes, but we'd still need some source of revenue to pay our one policeman.

  53. R C Dean   16 years ago

And today, released the San Diego tapes were released.

When I saw they had been to San Fran, I figured there had to be more shoes to drop. I mean, if you're on the West Coast, why not visit a few more offices?

And their strategy of releasing a new tape every few days - genius. It gives the story a new cycle, and makes all the previous foomfarawing from ACORN execs look idiotic at best.

  54. John   16 years ago

It is brilliant RC. God only knows how many they have. Those two college kids are national hereos.

  55. aelhues   16 years ago

It's been reasonably clear for at least a few years that acorn was a corrupt, and severely partisan organization, to anyone who spent a bit of time looking. It's amazing that these two have been able to bring attention to it.

What baffles and disgusts me is that someone at some point decided that Acorn needed to be funded by taxpayers. And don't give me any crap about how it's the governments duty to get people to vote. Their housing initiatives may have some validity, but only if their help is accurate, within the law.

  56. TrickyVic   16 years ago

If only we could cut funding to every agency that lies for taxpayer dollars.

    Why stop at ACORN?

  57. The Libertarian Guy   16 years ago

This MIGHT stop a FEW dollars from being tossed into the Acorn Salad, but it'll take a lot more to shut the spigot off for good.

And that ain't likely to happen, unfortunately.

  58. Naima   16 years ago

Those ACORN tapes look like throwaway Dave Chapelle skits. Why is every one taking that mess so seriously. Pimps and hoes don't even dress like that in real life.
