I actually think the color is the one clever element here. You have the grim and dour puritans of prohibition drawn in black and white and the real person (I still give Obama the benefit of the doubt on that one) in color, showing the contrast between the prohibitionist schemes and ideas and the reality of their targets. Since I picked up on that fairly quickly, I'm hoping that Henry Payne intended it and didn't merely stumble upon it.

In some ways I think this is one of the more clever Friday Funnies in a while. Is it funny? Not really. But it is mildly amusing and thought-provoking with the idea of prohibition peddlers who think that the president of the U.S. smokes because of ads an needs to be coddled like a school child. It gets pretty close to their mindset that sees the public as mindless drones at the mercies of devious advertisements (themselves excepted, of course). In that respect, it might annoy someone who sees prohibitionists as just in it For The Children? and, if they ask why they are annoyed, it might make them think (heaven forfend!) about it.

So this one I give passing marks to. It's at least amusing (and thus passes the Marmaduke and Cathy tests) and has some substance outside the amusement factor.

The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face fines of more than $1,000.

The details were unveiled Thursday in a health care overhaul bill supported by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

At their heart, all the bills would require insurance companies to sell coverage to any applicant, without charging higher premiums for pre-existing medical conditions.

Another difference from auto insurance: if you have 7 DWIs on your record, very few insurance companies are going to take you on.

My only point is that if you take the Bible straight, as I'm sure many of Reasons readers do, you will see a lot of the Old Testament stuff as absolutely insane. Even some cursory knowledge of Hebrew and doing some mathematics and logic will tell you that you really won't get the full deal by just doing regular skill english reading for those books. In other words, there's more to the books of the Bible than most will ever grasp. I'm not concerned that Mr. Crumb will go to hell or anything crazy like that! It's just that he, like many types of religionists, seems to take it literally, take it straight...the Bible's books were not written by straight laced divinity students in 3 piece suits who white wash religious beliefs as if God made them with clothes on...the Bible's books were written by people with very different mindsets...
