Sonia Sotomayor: "Left-wing in theory, right-wing in practice"
That's the verdict of David Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, who claims "we can learn all we need about Sotomayor's politics and perspective by examining her decisions in sports." After examining Sotomayor's votes in the 1995 baseball lockout case and in a 2004 case dealing with the NFL's draft-eligibility rules, Zirin has his doubts about her left-wing credentials:
In both, Sotomayor makes strong statements for union rights—that the baseball owners are challenging collective bargaining and that the NFL players' union has the right to restrict who plays. In both cases she is faithfully serving the interests of money and power. Sotomayor is a Yankees fan, which should just be a dead giveaway. Left-wing in theory, right-wing in practice—no wonder she clicked so smoothly with the current administration.

"Sotomayor is a Yankees fan, which should just be a dead giveaway."
I have noticed this Yankee Red Sox dicotomy. Leftists who are casual baseball fans tend to be Red Sox fans. It is kind of fitting since the Red Sox are complete frauds. The Red Sox claim to be the little team that could out there competing against he evil empire Yankees. The reality is of course entirely different. The Red Sox have a huge market. They own their own TV station. Rape their loyal fan base for every dollar possible and have made going to Fenway a province of the rich. They are owned by billionaires who could buy and sell the Steingbriners out of petty cash. And they buy just as many high priced free agents from small market teams as the Yankees ever did.
But leftists still love them and are convinced that rooting for the Red Sox, as opposed to say Pittsburgh or Kansas City, is rooting for the little guy. It really fits though. Lefty groups like the Sierra Club and ACLU are huge well funded mainstream organizations but still convince themselves that they are the little guy even when they are fighting some small business owner in Duluth or a small town school district in Texas.
I'm stunned to learn that the Nation has a sports editor.
Soooo, "right-wing" for The Nation places her somewhere to the left of Henry Waxman?
"Soooo, "right-wing" for The Nation places her somewhere to the left of Henry Waxman?"
Pretty much.
What would it mean if she were a Mets fan?
Well. In any case she's not the crazy hard-left gay-abortioning moonbat that some people are saying she is for some reason.
"What would it mean if she were a Mets fan?"
She enjoyed losing? Had a thing for self inflicted torment?
KT,
She is not a moonbat. She is a wise latina. That is a superior race in case you haven't heard.
She enjoyed losing? Had a thing for self inflicted torment?
Wouldn't that indicate libertarian tendencies, then?
BA DUM DUM
Just pray that Condoleeza Rice never becomes POTUS. Browns fans are far too unbalanced and nihilistic to be trusted with nukes.
She is not a moonbat. She is a wise latina. That is a superior race in case you haven't heard.
Jesus Christ, everybody is five years old. What the fuck am I reading this site for.
"Just pray that Condoleeza Rice never becomes POTUS. Browns fans are far too unbalanced and nihilistic to be trusted with nukes."
Yeah. The Browns were the first team to take large numbers of black players. As a result, they have a huge following among black people who grew up in the 50s and early 60s. As if slavery and Jim Crow were not enough, we had to turn black people in to Browns fans. America really does hate black people.
Jesus Christ, everybody is five years old. What the fuck am I reading this site for.
KT, who wins in a fight: a wise latina zombie or a shark? THINK CAREFULLY.
"Jesus Christ, everybody is five years old. What the fuck am I reading this site for."
I think you read it because you have such an open mind and great sense of humor.
John,
Mangini. FUCKING MANGINI. God, I hate my team.
What the fuck am I reading this site for.
Is this a trick question?
What the hell does sports have to do with real world politics? Especially sports unions? This is like arguing how she will vote based on her decisions while elementary school hall monitor.
For that matter, Epi, is it a question?
Skwisgaar Skwigelf: That's interesting. You said, "I would likes to ask a question." That's a statements.
Toki Wartooth: What...is...the difference?
Skwisgaar Skwigelf: That's...a great question.
There is no consensus as to whether Sotomayor is a rightish lefty, or an 'X of center' whatever. Everybody agrees, however, that she is a condescending lightweight.
"Left-wing in theory, right-wing in practic"
What's the difference?
sports editor for The Nation
WTF?
Warty,
I am a Chiefs fan, which is just like being a Browns fan only with a better stadium and good barbeque. We both suffered through the inhuman torture that is having Marty Schottenheimer as your coach. And we both wake up every morning with the knowledge that the Arizona Cardinals and the Seahawks have been to more Super Bowls since the merger than our teams have. UGH!!!
What the fuck am I reading this site for.
Grammar lessons?
For that matter, Epi, is it a question?
Spare me the amateur philosophy pontifications, you Metalocalypse-watching meathead.
(channeling KT)
KT, who wins in a fight: a wise latina zombie or a shark? THINK CAREFULLY.
The shark would most likely not destroy the wise Latina zombie's head, and would die of severe internal bleeding as it is eaten form the inside, but the zombie would be digested prior to the shark decaying, so it's a draw. Unless sharks can become zombies, of course.
Thread challenge: who can insult Warty in the most vicious, ego-destroying way? This is just for fun, kids, so...make them really, really mean.
I just saw something about the Secret Service throwing a reporter off of Air Force One. I don't really care about the reasons, but the picture is a hoot.
I'm sure they carried her out and tossed her somewhere with empathy.
In both cases she is faithfully serving the interests of money and power.
Since when is that "right-wing in practice"? Lefties aren't opposed to the exercise of power in principle; they just care about who exercises power (the State or, in these cases, the union).
As for serving the interests of money, well, I don't see anybody but rich people on both sides of these cases; whoever won, it was going to be money. Generally speaking, serving the interests of power, as lefties will, means you are serving a monied interest as well; there is no such thing as a powerful constituency that is also poor.
Note: the above my no means should be taken to mean that righties don't also serve the monied and powerful. I'm merely trying to prick the lefty pretension that only righties do.
"What the fuck am I reading this site for.

: who can insult Warty in the most vicious, ego-destroying way?
Hey Warty, you just agreed to stay for a PhD, you pile of shit. Moron.
"I'm merely trying to prick the lefty pretension that only righties do."
This is one of those issues that is like police beating up protesters. The first reaction of righties is usually, good, those hippie protesters deserved what they got. Then they change their mind when they hear it was abortion protesters who got beat up. Lefties think about police beating abortion protesters and don't seem to believe in all that "police restraint" stuff anymore.
Exactly how was her decision on the firefighters reverse discrimination case "right-wing in practive"?
"This is like arguing how she will vote based on her decisions while elementary school hall monitor."
I heard that when she was the elementary school hall monitor, she'd block the lavatory enterenvce so the little white boys would have to pee their pants.
"Exactly how was her decision on the firefighters reverse discrimination case 'right-wing in practice'?"
The article which you quote was a sports article, dealing with her sports decisions.
Warty is a one man circular ego firing squad!
Wow, that doesn't even make any sense.
"I heard that when she was the elementary school hall monitor, she'd block the lavatory entrance so the little white boys would have to pee their pants."
They couldn't go to the bathroom until they were three years out of high school.
"This is one of those issues that is like police beating up protesters. The first reaction of righties is usually, good, those hippie protesters deserved what they got. Then they change their mind when they hear it was abortion protesters who got beat up. Lefties think about police beating abortion protesters and don't seem to believe in all that "police restraint" stuff anymore."
Shouldn't the action depend at least in part on the actions of the protestors. I have walked through the middle of the national right to life march in Washington or whatever it is. And you could not ask for a more peaceful bunch. In contrast the roving band of scum that go around to G7 meetings are outright dangerous. It seems to me that the police beating up a bunch of thugs who are breaking windows and throwing bricks is a little different than beating up a bunch of old ladies and nuns. But I guess you would see the former and think "yeah the right is just like the left"
The worst part, Epi, is that no one but me bothered to insult me.
...Wait, I think I just did it again.
"The article which you quote was a sports article, dealing with her sports decisions."
I wasn't quoting the sports article.
I was making the point that some guy at The Nation picking a sports case she judged doesn't prove that she's "right-wing in practice".
So she's a crappy pick and a fucking Yankees fan. Can we libertarians get nothing to go in our favor?
Pro,
You really aren't a Red Sox fan are you? If you are, I have to commend you for being so articulate for a retarded person.
The worst part, Epi, is that no one but me bothered to insult me.
My plan worked perfectly. The only thing I didn't anticipate is the possibility that, like Spock, you have no ego to bruise.
I'm a Tigers fan. It looks as if this season's shaping up to be a good one.
"Thread challenge: who can insult Warty in the most vicious, ego-destroying way? This is just for fun, kids, so...make them really, really mean."
For years and years, Warty had dreamed of fucking the elephant in the city zoo. In fact, he went to the zoo daily just so he could beg and plead with the elephant to let him fuck her.
Finally, after years of badgering, the elephant relented, so Warty, drunk with animal lust, began to mount her. And as luck would have it, the very moment he pressed his micro-tool into her, a coconut fell from one of the elephant exhibit's trees, hitting the elephant square in the head.
"Ouch!" yelled the elephant. To which Warty replied, "Suffer. Bitch."
"Shouldn't the action depend at least in part on the actions of the protesters."
No doubt. But we have to frankly admit that neither right nor left are immune from things turning ugly, even when they start with peaceful intent. As for those without any such intent, we again have to realize that violence doesn't have any politics.
Besides, my point was based on somebody who reads a headline and has a reaction before they even read the story.
Fair enough Lamar. But when was the last time a right wing protest turned violent? I can't remember one to be honest. Maybe I am just forgetting. But it seems like it is the left that is always getting violent and breaking shit at these things.
"This is one of those issues that is like police beating up protesters. The first reaction of righties is usually, good, those hippie protesters deserved what they got. John,
Of course not. I've been a Braves fan since I was a wee lad, and I've been a Rays fan since the team's inception. As a Rays fan, of course, I have all the more reason to despise both the Sox and the Yankees.
I will give the Sox one thing, though. Fenway is a nice park. Second in my experience only to Wrigley, which is an awesome place to watch baseball. And a convenient location for mocking the hapless Cubs.
"I wasn't quoting the sports article."
Perhaps I am wrong in thinking that the "left wing in theory, right wing in practice" quote was from a sports article.
"As a Rays fan, of course, I have all the more reason to despise both the Sox and the Yankees."
Funny, but I always am thankful that George S. installed his B team in Tampa. Now that the B team done all growed up, I'm still OK with the Yanks.
"[citation needed]"
[Pointing to nuts while striking a pseudo-Hustler pose.]
gun grabbing...I guess that is left wing, but it is definitely a hitler move...so isn't that right wing? When will the media stop pigeonholing every idea as "left" or "right"? It is a mental prison that must be destroyed.
If americans can really only think in one dimension, then please use "totalitarian" vs "freedom"...I guess we need one sylabble words. Any suggestions?
"I will give the Sox one thing, though. Fenway is a nice park. Second in my experience only to Wrigley, which is an awesome place to watch baseball. And a convenient location for mocking the hapless Cubs."
My wife is from Boston. Fenway is really neat.
And I am a lover of all things old. That said, I think if I lived in Boston I would support tearing the place down and building a larger more accessable park. It is so small and the demand is so high, average people just can't afford to go to games there. Actually, if I owned the Marlins I woudl build a big nice park in Foxboro and move there. There are so many people in Boston who can't afford to go to Red Sox games, the Red Sox wouldn't notice.
A place like Atlanta with a big accessable park is so much better to be a baseball fan than Boston. Actually, if you like baseball, Atlanta is a great city to live in. They have a great park, a generally good team, and the tickets are plentiful and cheap.
Steinbrenner has lived in Tampa for decades and has done all sorts of nice things for the area, so I'm good with him. His team can go to the Hell of Ten Thousand Bean Balls, however.
If Boston tears down Fenway, then the city will no longer have a purpose for existing.
"Fair enough Lamar. But when was the last time a right wing protest turned violent? I can't remember one to be honest. Maybe I am just forgetting. But it seems like it is the left that is always getting violent and breaking shit at these things."
I've got a whole slew of unsupported theories. For example, conservatives are individualists more than liberals. Our violence comes from loners like Eric Rudolph, whereas the liberals have their groupthink and like to wreak havoc in numbers. Or, conservatives simply don't protest as much because they have a deference to authority, or are older, or have to go to work, or have a family, etc. I just don't know.
She is not a moonbat. She is a wise latina. That is a superior race in case you haven't heard.
Too bad she's not a hot latina, like the chicas on the subway. Grrrr!
"If Boston tears down Fenway, then the city will no longer have a purpose for existing."
That already ended when they tore down Boston Garden. What I never got about Fenway and Wrigley Field for that matter is how they can be so "historic" when all that ever happened there was the home team losing. Hell, more important football stuff happened at Wrigley than baseball stuff. A place like the old Yankee Stadium (tear), of Lambeau Field the Notre Dame stadium where people actually won a few things is what is historic. Fenway and Wrigley are just historic because they are the last of their kind, which is valuable I guess.
"If Boston tears down Fenway, then the city will no longer have a purpose for existing."
I usually don't root against teams. I'm probably the lone Real Madrid fan who rooted for Barcelona in the Champions League final. That said, I root against all Boston teams. And Ben Affleck.
I just realized that Real Madrid is sort of the soccer version of the Yankees.
"I just realized that Real Madrid is sort of the soccer version of the Yankees."
That or the Dodgers. I think Man U is more like the Yankees of soccer.
Lamar - maybe. Barca, Real, ManU all have that yankees thing going on.
John - Marty was coach of the Browns for many years, so your parallel gets even stronger!
As a Cubbies fan, Wrigley is okay. Two weeks ago we were sitting in front of the White Sox fans' belief of the typical game goer. They talked the whole time. Didn't know the score. Didn't pay attention, etc. grumble.
"For example, conservatives are individualists more than liberals. "
yup. like the religious ones. Nothing smacks of individuality than organized religion...

"Lamar - maybe. Barca, Real, ManU all have that yankees thing going on."
Barca is a little different, owing to their semi-open opposition to Franco, refusal to wear corporate branding, etc. They are the Red Sox, IMHO.
I was so glad to see Christiano Ronaldo get stuffed like a goddam pillowcase.
you are a bad, bad man, Mr. Moose 🙂
"That said, I root against all Boston teams. And Ben Affleck."
I rooted against the Celtics for nearly fifty years. Hated their guts. However, when they picked up Garnett, I prayed every night that they'd win the championship. And G-d heard those prayers.
Here's some of that "right-wing in practice": SS was a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that, while presented as mainstream, in 1994 gave an award to someone who, years before, had made eliminationist remarks. See the link for my extensive summary and coverage of them. And, email that link to your friends and ask them to contact their Senators.
P.S. Any replies to this comment will most likely consist of ad homs, as libertarians concede my points and show their childish, anti-intellectual nature.

"yup. like the religious ones. Nothing smacks of individuality [more] than organized religion..."
I dunno. There are a lot of people in the U.S. and a lot of different faiths and different denominations within those faiths. It isn't a monolithic Catholic church like in some places.
Lone Wolf: you're prolly right about the ad homs.
From my point of view, many of your opinions are off the freakin wall, it doesn't surprise me that there are people (including me) who do respond that way
but the "i just blogged my way across america." series from all those years ago was not greeted as such.
Lamar - yes, there are. but the general organized religion. It's pretty socialist, i think. Talking about sports is more fun, anyways.
Lamar - there may be many types of religious groups, but they're all fundamentally about joining a group of people who think and believe approximately the same way that you do, which is the opposite of individualism.
possible exception: Unitarian Universalism, which I understand is often more like a debating society of philosophy than a religion
"Barca is a little different, owing to their semi-open opposition to Franco, refusal to wear corporate branding, etc. They are the Red Sox, IMHO."
How can you associate the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate with anything noble?
It is appalling how people confuse the Red Sox with the Celtics. The Celtics were a model organization when it counted. They were the first pro team to start five black players and the first pro team to hire a black coach. Red Auerbach did as much for black athletes as any one in the last 50 years.
The Red Sox in contrast were owned by a racist bastard and fought integration until the last dog died. Yet, the Red Sox are always portrayed as some kind of noble team. And that idiot Spike Lee called the Celtics a symbol of white supremacy. There is no justice in history.
I just missed Old Comiskey Park when I moved to Chicago in 1993. The new one sucks. It's a mall.
My first game at Wrigley was extra great for me, because (1) they were playing the Braves, (2) the Braves kicked ass, (3) I laughed and laughed because the Braves had Greg Maddux and the Cubs didn't, and (4) Bill Cosby threw out the first pitch.
"I just missed Old Comiskey Park when I moved to Chicago in 1993. The new one sucks. It's a mall."
I am told it smelled like a urinal and most of the seats were behind posts. I still would love to have seen it though.

when they remodeled it in 2003 or so, it got much better.

It's the fan-base I dislike.
"Know who I haven't seen around in awhile?
DONDEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
And where's that fucker HEB?
VM,
In 1995. Do they still have vertical seating?
John,
About that tradition thing. Sure, winning beats losing, but the (good) old parks had character. I thoroughly enjoyed watching games at Fenway and at Wrigley, even though I wasn't a fan of the home team in either instance.
I don't like the Celtics, either. Then again, I was a Lakers fan back in the 70s and 80s. Of course, I turned my back on the NBA many years ago.
I have noticed this Yankee Red Sox dicotomy. Leftists who are casual baseball fans tend to be Red Sox fans.
I use to think only leftist obsessed and worried about the political meaning of rooting for a specific team, but I've been proven wrong.

I blame it on the Weekly Standard. They have a knack for taking left wing vices and reshaping them to something uniquely their own. Love you like an ugly brother, John, but I had to point it out.
Pro Lib-
Why did you turn your back on the NBA?
She is a wise latina.
It is a shame that Obama instead of finding a 'wise Latina'(barf), could not have found a wise ass black woman straight out of a 70's sitcom to nominate. I nominate Shirley from What's Happenin', if the actress is still alive.
If our legal system is going the way of a joke, better to have fun than to pretend it still has the same vestige of seriousness it did at our nation's founding.
John-3:50
My thoughts exactly.
Moreover, Red Sox fans tend to be parochial-they are not interested in watching/following Kansas City or Pittsburgh. Its a New England thing. Same for Pats and Celtics fans. Like right now, WEEI (Boston) is talking about the Red Sox and no discussion about the NBA conference finals. It drives me nuts.
alan-6:31
It applies to anarcho-free enterprise-individualists as well.
John and Pro Lib-
Coors Field is so much nicer than either Fenway or Wrigley.

How about this:
I think that, when the left wing kicks you in the nuts, they say they do it to be fair. When the right wing kicks you in the nuts, they say they do it to be good. What I say is, kick them both in the nuts, and vote for Ron Paul.
'Lamar - there may be many types of religious groups, but they're all fundamentally about joining a group of people who think and believe approximately the same way that you do, which is the opposite of individualism.

I have hung around both Unitarian and Catholic congregations. Guess which type of congregation tends to be made up, not only predominantly, but almost exclusively affluent white people who belong to the Democratic Party and who think arms are for hugging, and which type of congregation tends to be made up of a mix of people of different income levels, opinions, and races - white, asian, black?

I've been to both. They both suck. The old one had character, but it's fair to say it sucked more.
There are worse things than malls.
John - haha, that's right, my Birds (as I like to call the Cardinals) got all the way to the Super Bowl! Bidwell must have finally returned the indian artifacts that he had dug up or something.
Pro - my girl and I are thinking about moving to Cape Coral once I get my bachelor's degree finally wrapped up (in my late 30's). 🙂 I'm gonna hafta start rooting for the Rays, the Bucs, and the Lightning, even though I've been a life-long west-coaster, western conference, national league kinda guy. At least the Bucs are (now) in the NFC...

And to think The Nation was once a libertarian magazine back in the day.

Shirley Hemphill is dead.
If we're going for diversity I say an erudite ladyboy over a wise latina.
TallDave, the upper deck blows. At least at Old Comiskey you could sit upstairs and see the game not feel like you were going to die every time you got up to take a piss.
Come on, I think y'all are missing the odd fact of a Nation writer realizing that unions can be on the side of power, privilege, and money. Of course, in the writer's view that somehow magically makes them "right-wing," but, again, it is the Nation
It's not hard to imagine right wing unions at all: think police unions. They routinely fight left wing things like civilian review boards.
MNG-
False left/right paradigm. How about police unions bad and civilian review boards good?
MNG, in fact, IMHO, you can stamp my previous post with the impramatur of absolutism.
proglib - not as bad, but still pretty terrifying!
Ask High# - that's his team 🙂
Tempest in a taco shell.
LM
I'm a huge advocate of civilian review boards. I just wanted to note that unions in general are supported by the left as are civilian review boards, which tend to be opposed by people who identify as right, and that police unions oppose them. In fact, police unions take quite a few positions that would more often than not be found by those identifying with "the right" than as found by those calling themselves "left." For one thing, they often endorse GOP candidates...So that's why I gave police unions as an excellent example of a union that tends to be right wing...
Here is a case in which Sotomayer has a shitload of explaining to do:

Really? In Virginia near me they always endorse the Democrats. They did so in Durham, NC, they did so in Ithaca. The prison guards' and the cops' unions endorse Democrats in California statewide elections as well.
It's probably true that police unions are more willing to endorse whomever looks like they're definitely going to win in various areas, though, than other unions.
In general, MNG, any union of a group that already has power and privilege will fight for power and privilege. It's what they do. Teachers' unions prioritize their existing privileges and power structure over helping kids. Unions of particularly skilled and qualified workers, like airline pilots', probably even contribute to inequality.
In many of these cases, this makes them no less likely to endorse Democrats, and for Democrats to work on their behalf.
John
What are you talking about? The FOP endorsed Jerry Kilgore over Tim Kaine last time around (look it up). And I can bet you money the FOP will also endorse McDonnell for Governor (they did so in his Atty General run). (I live in Md not too far from Virginia, I lived in Va. for over two decades, my folks still live in the Commonwealth, and the WaPo I read covers the Va elections as much as our Md ones, so I'm pretty up on Va politics fyi, though as a qualifier I must admit that I famously predicted Obama had no chance to win the state here on H&R...)
Of course she's right wing -- she's a Hispanic national socialist.
Fair enough Lamar. But when was the last time a right wing protest turned violent?
Wow...blinders much.
Just for chuckles: Seems like a violent protest in Kansas has been in the headlines. I am thinking the protester was more right than left wing.
