yea, go ahead and bash on social security. it is still working and your buddies are not. sharing the wealth is what our country was founded on.

  2.   16 years ago

Well, that didn’t take very long.

Kinda like what your partner says…” Man, that was fast”

For theirs and our sake learn to have a bit more restraint!

  3. JW   16 years ago

I think we’ve stumbled upon the secret to successful Friday Funnies: having a brain-dead troll that makes the comic seem funny by comparison.

  4. Lurker   16 years ago

A troll whose shift button is broken too.

  5. John JOnes   16 years ago

LOL, dude that is pretty funny!

  6. nobody u no and a big fan of j   16 years ago

yea, forget about free minds here.

  7. Nigel Watt   16 years ago

Well, Reason, at least the anonymity spammer likes the cartoons.

  8. Episiarch   16 years ago

Brain dead trolls and Anonymity Guy! JACKPOT!

And, for the record, this is one of Bok’s better efforts, though that isn’t saying much.

  9. Elemenope   16 years ago

    …this is one of Bok’s better efforts…

So there I was, not laughing. And then this occurred to me, all the while I was there, not laughing.

  10. Episiarch   16 years ago

I’m stumped. Is that a reference? Or just your own creation?

  11. Libertymike   16 years ago

    Happy New Year everybody.

No, I am not the creator of nobody u no.

  12. Nigel Watt   16 years ago

No, I am not the creator of nobody u no.

    Good, that would be embarrassing.

  13. tired of complaints   16 years ago

    What’s brown and sticky?

    A stick.

This was voted the World’s Funniest Joke on a www survey.

    Happy?

  14. Untermensch   16 years ago

This is one of the better Friday Funnies out there. Sad thing is that far too many of our fellow citizuns would not get it and we have a lot of congrus peeple who are willfully blind to the problem knowing that they won’t have to deal with it in their lifetimes…

  15. Lurker   16 years ago

    “forget about free minds here.”

Capital letters at beginning of sentences too.

  16. Chip Bok   16 years ago

How do you guys like my latest effort? I create my cartoons by thinking of mediocre analogies (Soc.Sec. = Ponzi Scheme) and then making a mediocre drawing about it. Even though any smart high-schooler can put out equivalent work, they don’t get paid the big bucks like I do…!! 🙂

  17. Libertymike   16 years ago

    Nigel Watt-

Notwithstanding the fact that I have slammed him and vice-versa, I like Joe.

  18. Episiarch   16 years ago

I am Chip Bok’s inflamed sense of rejection.

  19. Nigel Watt   16 years ago

Something tells me Chip Bok doesn’t exactly get paid big bucks.

Not that I do, but still.

  20. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

It seems to me that Hit & Run should just post nothing, label it “Friday Funnies”, then invite all of the commenters to hurl insults at the nonexistent cartoon and cartoonist.

Only Baked Penguin has offered an alternative, as far as I know. Unfortunately, I can’t link to his cartoons for some reason.

  21. nobody u no and a big fan of j   16 years ago

libertymike, don’t worry, i will spank you by quoting myself later.

  22. joe   16 years ago

It’s alan, the Ekonomiks genius who doesn’t know what Keynsiansism is.

You all need to take Econ 101; then you’d think he’s funny.

  23. :P Brooks   16 years ago

    I miss Jeff MacNelly.

  24. EJM   16 years ago

Only Baked Penguin has offered an alternative, as far as I know.

Here’s my idea: Drop “Friday Funnies” and use the resulting savings and/or space to secure the services of a certain columnist who just lost one of his jobs.

  25. joe   16 years ago

For my New Year’s resolution, I’m going to profread my comments.

  26. Lurker   16 years ago

If you take Econ 101 and it is taught by anyone worth a damn you learn what a massive failure Keynsianism is.

  27. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

I took four semesters of economics, and I remember only a few things: guns, butter, Dutch tulips, and Keynes was an ass. Oh, and I remember the Laffer.

  28. Episiarch   16 years ago

Here’s my idea: Drop “Friday Funnies” and use the resulting savings and/or space to secure the services of a certain columnist who just lost one of his jobs.

I love the Village Voice. It’s free, it has hilarious personal ads, and it has (had?) Savage Love. Also, insanely pretentious independent film reviews.

  29. joe   16 years ago

Is the Village Voice one of those free papers that pays the bills by running a section dedicated to pr0n ads?

A friend of mine used to do layout work for the Providence Phoenix. Part of his job was to draw the black stars on the pr0n ads.

  30. dhex   16 years ago

getting hentoff a column in reason would be awesome.

  31. Episiarch   16 years ago

Is the Village Voice one of those free papers that pays the bills by running a section dedicated to pr0n ads?

Yes it is, joe. What’s fun is going down to their loading dock on Wednesday (it used to be Wednesday, at least) nights, where they give out advance copies of the paper which normally gets put on the street Thursday morning. The place is a circus because all the people who are trying to rent an apartment are there to get a half-day jump on everyone else. Also, actors and models will go too for a little advance knowledge of casting calls.

  32. BakedPenguin   16 years ago

Pro Lib – I had to let the site go for monetary reasons. I was going to get in touch with dhex or Jake Boone, both of whom offered me hosting space at point in the past.

  33. edward   16 years ago

guys, i had to cut back on posting for monetary reasons. thanks free market!

  34. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

    Save the BakedPenguins!*

    * BP, position yourself as yet another victim of global warming, and the money will flow.

  35. BakedPenguin   16 years ago

I was going to call my website a financial institution and ask for a $4.8 billion bailout.

It had over 10 pages at one point, after all.

  36. Nick   16 years ago

Well, Social Security is like a Ponzi scheme without the need to convince new investors. We need to come up with a name for this brilliant business model – how about a “Roosevelt Scheme”?

  37. Isaac Bartram   16 years ago

When I took Econ 101, Keynes’ reputation was still intact.

Shows how old I am, doesn’t it?

  38. BakedPenguin   16 years ago

The global warming thing may be the way to go, though. It evokes more sympathy. Either way, I’ll have to sober up my avatar before he testifies in front of Congress.

  39. R C Dean   16 years ago

What’s fun is going down to their loading dock on Wednesday

Damn, E, that does sound like fun.

  40. R C Dean   16 years ago

When I took Econ 101, Keynes’ reputation was still intact.

Shows how old I am, doesn’t it?

The way people have been acting the last few months, I would say this places you somewhere short of graduation, say, 18 – 22.

  41. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

    BP,

What about free space like over at Blogger?

    Isaac,

I was in college during the Reagan years. There were still some holdouts, but the rejection of Keynesianism was in full motion by the time I was taking my economics classes.

  42. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

    R C,

Ah, you refer to the Zombie Keynes, to be followed by Zombie Marx.

  43. New Mexican\'t   16 years ago

Keynes is highly regarded, please don’t be ignorant. I’m going to tell you how things work, after all I’m in my mid 20’s and have all the answers. Obama relying on his team of experts will straighten this mess out, and if he can’t do it…well, no one can.

  44. Fresno Bob   16 years ago

There were still some holdouts, but the rejection of Keynesianism was in full motion by the time I was taking my economics classes.

Too bad it didn’t last. Keynesianism appears to be king these days.

  45. Pro Libertate   16 years ago

Like I said, Zombie Keynes walks among us.

  46. BakedPenguin   16 years ago

Pro L – I intent to get the site back up some time in the near future, it’s just right now I can’t be spending any cash I don’t absolutely need to. (Also, Blogger annoys me with its limitations. I find HTML a lot easier to deal with.)

Also, I bought a used copy of an Econ textbook (that the store wouldn’t buy back) from some sorority girl for $2, then CLEP’d both those classes.

  47. Isaac Bartram   16 years ago

PL, when I took Econ 101, LBJ was president.

But RC Dean’s little joke was funny anyway.

  48. R C Dean   16 years ago

Ah, you refer to the Zombie Keynes, to be followed by Zombie Marx.

And where the Zombie Marx goes, can the Zombie Lenin be far behind?

  49. P Brooks   16 years ago

Judging by the number of zombie financial enterprises stalking the earth, it looks like somebody definitely managed to kill Zombie Schumpeter.

  50. Isaac Bartram   16 years ago

Actually, re Madoff. If the allegations are correct, it appears he went a few steps further that Ponzi. Ponzi, at least, paid of his early investors but was caught fairly early when he couldn’t keep paying them.

As I understand it, Madoff was issuing totally bogus investment statements showing huge gains and wasn’t caught until a significant number wanted to cash in. If it hadn’t been for the bank crunch he might have gotten away for a lot longer.

Ponzi at least had that foreign stamp thing that blew up on him. Apparently Madoff was just outright stealing his investor’s money.

  51. P Brooks   16 years ago

Would somebody care to explain to me why Madoff isn’t in the Tombs, instead of lounging around his fucking giant luxury apartment? If he was a guy who stole twenty bucks from a liquor store, he wouldn’t get released on his own recognizance.

I just hope there are people on the sidewalk beneath his window twenty-four hours a day, yelling, “JUMP, BERNIE! JUMP, YOU FUCKER!”

  52. joe   16 years ago

I take back all the mean things I wrote about John McCain when he called for Christopher Cox’s resignation.

  53. nobody u no and a big fan of j   16 years ago

Keynes is just too advanced for the people trolling here.

  54. joe   16 years ago

Yup, except “people” is a plural term, troll.

  55. .   16 years ago

Troll is also both a noun and a verb, like dick.

  56. Long Dong Silver   16 years ago

Part of his job was to draw the black stars on the pr0n ads.

Wouldn’t have been easier to just use the publicity stills?

  57. Brandybuck   16 years ago

What puzzles me about Madoff is how anyone thinks they can get away with a Ponzi scheme. Eventually the house of cards has to collapse, and the more “successful” you are at the swindling, the more numerous the folks who will be hunting you down.

I guess I would never make a good criminal. After my fifth million I would cash out and disappear.

  58. nobody u no and a big fan of j   16 years ago

sorry joe, i learned all of my econ from you. replace my earlier comment with “although keynes was ahead of his time, he was no joe p boyle”. better?

  59. joe   16 years ago

    *kiss kiss*

    Love ya, fan club.

Yes, I did kick your ass in that discussion about economics.

Please keep bringing it up. Happy memories.

  60. Francesco Sinibaldi   16 years ago

    An intense light.

    With fine
    manners the
    mask of a child
    invites me to
    cry, when the
    moonlight
    appears; I hear
    a blackbird
    near the sound
    of a small lamp,
    and everything
    shines like
    a terse sensibility.

    Francesco Sinibaldi

  61. Lefiti   16 years ago

Just like the old Soviet Union–cartoons in the service of the ideology. Fucking disgusting.

  62. Graphite   16 years ago

Lefiti, Paul Sameulson, an avid New Dealer, happily called Social Security “a Ponzi scheme that works” in Newsweek, back in the 50s I believe.

This has nothing to do with ideology, it is simply a fact that SS *is* a Ponzi scheme. Whether that means we should reform or abolish it is all that’s legitimately up for debate.

  63. Shem   16 years ago

It seems to me that Hit & Run should just post nothing, label it “Friday Funnies”, then invite all of the commenters to hurl insults at the nonexistent cartoon and cartoonist.

This is because political cartoons suck ass. Not one of them has ever been funny. Maybe if they could get Peter Bagge to do a weekly comic, the feature would be worthwhile, otherwise, they need to take it off life support.
