Brad Spangler digs up a Douglas Adams quote worth repeating:
"On [that] world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy?"
"I did," said Ford, "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in."
Seems especially relevant at a time of transition from one lizard to another.

Now that you mention it. It occurs to me that a derth of Douglass Adams quotes has long plagued our public discourse on all manner of topics, particularly here at Hit and Run.
I see that Mr. Adams understands why I don't vote.
It's been years since I read the Hitchhiker series. Maybe I should do so again.
"This may be my last entry. I am almost exhausted. Unless I find the weapon the Metron mentioned, I have very little time left. Native sulfur, diamonds...this place is a mineralogist's dream! Yet...there is something about sulfur...something very old. Something...if only I could remember."
David Icke has a conspiracy theory along these lines. He contends that the ruling families in the various countries of Earth are the result of interbreeding between humans and alien reptiles from the "lower fourth dimension."
Personally, I keep hoping that, somewhere in the multiverse, that there is a universe of Twiki overlords. That would be so awesome in that it would make me eternally grateful, no matter how bad things get in this one.
Reading that article that Jessee links to, I count 17 votes for Obama to 16 votes for bar and about ten that are either none of the above or McCAin and one Ralph Nader. While not an absolute majority, more of the staff voted for Obama than voted for Barr. I guess some lizards are more equal than others.
Why any libertarian would have voted for Obama over Barr is beyond me. A vote for Barr was effective a vote against McCain so the "I hate Repbublicans" excuse doesn't really hunt. Reason loves to lecture Republicans on the need for protest votes and the need to act on principle. But a large number of the staff don't seem to interested in casting their votes that way. I guess it was just too cool to be for Obama this year.
John -- Among actual full-time staff of the magazine, that poll yielded 2 votes for Obama, 5 votes for Barr, and 4 no-votes (I'm counting the wavering Damon Root in that category). Since I actually ended up failing to register in time, that means 2 Obama, 4 Barr, 5 non-voters.
If you people really hate politicians, then start hating on them. How about a little guy from nowhere and a no one who stands up for themselves and gets elected office? That would be a good deal wouldn't it? Of course, the little guy wouldn't stand a chance because all of the technorati and pundits would talk about how they "didn't have enough experience", "hadn't been vetted enough" and so forth. If everyone hates politicians so much, why is being a politician considered such needed experience for elected office? If you really hate politicians, experience as a politician ought to be a negative not a positive. But, pundits and journalists don't hate politicians nearly as much as they would like you to think they do. Their lizards are somehow always ok.
"""How about a little guy from nowhere and a no one who stands up for themselves and gets elected office?"""
Funny how we scream up and down for the outsider to run, then beat them up for not being experienced in politics.
When McCain picked Palin, I was wonder if she was going to conform to, or change GOP politics. Once the GOP decided she needed a spitshine, I saw the answer.
Oddly enough, I left the following comment on 11/29. For those wondering, three weeks is about the average time period it takes Reason to appropriate one of my ideas:
Say, I was listening to CoastToCoastAM yesterday and I heard someone with an English accent speaking about how BHO is basically just a Zbig/Soros puppet. He even discussed the Center for American Progress. Only later did I realize it was DavidIcke, but he actually said a lot of things about BHO that you will never hear from Beltway hacks like Reason, and none of them were about lizards.
"""" If everyone hates politicians so much, why is being a politician considered such needed experience for elected office? If you really hate politicians, experience as a politician ought to be a negative not a positive."""
That's really a great quote, which I hope to see more of in libertarian outreach, at least to those who are or are overdue to become Adams fans. Maybe the LP can produce just that scene alone as a 30- or 60- second "awareness" video spot to keep the LP name before the public eyeballs and attract viewers to the website.
By the way, I'm assuming that those who agree with the sentiments of the Adams quote feel that Barr was also a member of the lizard class. Has there been any LP candidate -- ANY candidate of ANY party or no party -- that was non-lizardlike, or at least less so than the rest? What do people think?
"When McCain picked Palin, I was wonder if she was going to conform to, or change GOP politics. Once the GOP decided she needed a spitshine, I saw the answer."
Palin was a nobody from nowhere who managed to get herself elected governor. There is something profoundly subversive about that. The fact that so many conservative pundits couldn't see that and instead did their best to destroy her (Noonan, Kristof, Will and Kathleen Parker most notably) shows how decadent and in bed with the political establishment they really are. If you really want to tear down the system, lack of experience in the system is a feature not a bug.

How about also producing versions featuring lines from, say, "Yes, Minister"?

Since the only thing Lonewacko's comment has in common with my post is the word "lizard," I guess this means he thinks he coined the term. Three weeks ago. On this site.
The two Obama votes were Ron Bailey and David Weigel. Ron, who gave as his reason that the GOP had to be punished hard, lives in Virginia where the election was as you know very tight, and Obama winning VA and NC most certainly were punishments for the GOP. They had not lost those states for decades at the Prez level. So Bailey's choice seems reasonable. And Weigel plainly states that he would have voted for Barr but Barr was not on the ballot in DC where he lives.
Enough voting for Barr in NC or VA could well have meant McCain wins there.
But it suddenly occurs to me, are you the right wing nut John that frequents here or some other, saner person with the common appellation of John? If the former I guess I'm wasting my time...
The majority of Troofers I've met have high regard for David Ickes. When I ask them about the lizards, they either pretend they don't know what I'm talking about, or that his opinion on Bush's non-human ancestry has no bearings on the Troof of what he says about Bush. The cognitive dissonance is awesome.

Funny, but to be fair, and, hopefully, to state the obvious, it doesn't have any bearing. He may happen to make claims based on an insane chain of reasoning that are nevertheless true. Broken clocks and all that.
With many new announcement about the wizard of oz movies in the news, you might want to consider starting to obtain Wizard of Oz book series either as collectible or investment at RareOzBooks.com.
I have long thought that a more perfect description of humanity has never been written.
Now that you mention it. It occurs to me that a derth of Douglass Adams quotes has long plagued our public discourse on all manner of topics, particularly here at Hit and Run.
Actually don't vote for us. I really don't feel like getting off my hot rock just to regulate you fools.

I voted for Sleestaks.
Didn't Jesse and most of the reason staff vote for Obama?
I voted for Sleestaks.
Damn, I had completely forgotten about Land of the Lost. Nice one.
Episiarch: I crave a Gorn vs Sleestak cage match. Two ponderous slow-moving rubbery beings hurling telegraphed roundhouses at each other.
Damn, I had completely forgotten about Land of the Lost. Nice one
How can you forget Sleestaks? They were hilarious.
Didn't Jesse and most of the reason staff vote for Obama?
No, unless you interpret any failure to vote for McCain as a vote for Obama. Our ballots are here.
Jeff, throw in some of the aliens from V and Sarris from Galaxy Quest and that'd be a hell of a reptilia-match.
Dr. Curtis Conners in the graphic. Cool.
David Icke has a conspiracy theory along these lines. He contends that the ruling families in the various countries of Earth are the result of interbreeding between humans and alien reptiles from the "lower fourth dimension."
A kooky idea, but it gives him a living.
I, for one,....never mind.

Voting for Queeg hardly qualifies as "being part of the solution".

Not all of those people in that link are offically affiliated with Reason.
Also one of them is chapman. So TTFWIW.

Fair enough Matt. I forgot all those people were not associated with Reason. The two that did vote for Obama still deserve scorn.

Vote for Jerry!
No votes for Lady Sylvia Marsh, Matt?

Woof! (howls, stamps foot)
Hey, I'm just a simple creature eating the bugs in your house and selling you insurance. Don't lump me in with these other no-talent ass clowns.
My vote would have made Lucky Jack Aubrey happy: I voted for the lesser of the two weevils.

Beltway hacks like reason? That's funny coming from a guy that listens to Coast to coast.
I agree John. I don't know if we should call them conservative pundits though, they really represent team red, not the conservative ideology.
What are you going to do? Vote for a third party?
Go ahead. Throw your vote away!

I'm LOLing at the fact that so many people have heard of David Icke. Even Alex Jonez thinks he's insane.

Frederic Brown AND Ken Russell
Damn Episi your good taste is showing in this thread
Alex Jonez only says David Icke's nuts because he's one of the reptilians too.
Can I vote for Dr. Lizardo?

If nobody voted, nothing but Labrador Retriever puppies would get elected.
I'm just sayin'.
Ruthless non-voting peaceful anarchist

Okay, that's it - I'm gonna stop here and go drain the lizard.
One of Ron Paul's top advisors was named Tom Lizardo.... coincidence?????
