Who cares what color the guy representing New Orleans is? That’s irrelevant. The butt of the joke is taxpayers, who come in all colors. It won’t be funny once inflation is finally unmasked, and the con game is slowly collapsing at the moment.

What isn’t shown in the cartoon of course is the entire length of the waiting line, which includes such lovable characters as Sally So’Security, Mabel Medicare, Pauline Prescription Plan and Franky Farmer. It needn’t be mentioned but I will anyway: at the very end of the line is the twin brother of Mr. Taxpayer himself, fully expecting services for payments extorted.

You could add Lehman brothers. I don’t like how it conflates the poor, struggling people of New Orleans with rich, connected ones of Bear Stearns who no doubt got golden parachutes as they took tax payer money.

Re: Lehman brothers, nice how Federal government is backing that private company – for the justifiable reason of preventing a panic and a collapse of the global economy – at taxpayers expenses. That investment bank should have been regulated if it’s “too big to fail.”

The New Orleans guy in line doesn’t represent “the poor, struggling people of New Orleans” who are still waiting to get permission to rebuild their homes from Katrina. It represents the government and elite of NOLA who want cash for more dikes, infrastructure, public works, and other largess they might one day allow to trickle down a bit.

I think it’s the true spirit of libertarianism to conflate federal aid for citizens with the shamelessly corporatist bailout of an investment firm. This cartoon has reminded me what most of you are actually concerned about.

But don’t think for a moment that us socialists are happy about this situation – at least, not when the welfare of citizens is put on the back burner compared to the fiscal integrity of foolhardy banking concerns.
