    Huh. Unclever, unfunny.

And talk about the low-hanging fruit.

  2. Untermensch   17 years ago

    And badly drawn at that?

  3. Mojotron   17 years ago

this cartoon works on several levels.

those levels are "poorly drawn" and "unfunny".

  4. JLM   17 years ago

OH, I GET IT. THE KID LOOKS LIKE EDWARDS. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Michael   17 years ago

Anybody else notice how the guy watching looks like McCain?

  6. i don\'t get it   17 years ago

i thought the joke was that edwards isn't even running any longer, so how can it not look for him?

    i don't know...

but anyways, yeah... is reason required by law to have a political cartoonist or something? why does chip bok still have a job?

  7. Reinmoose   17 years ago

Who is the old guy in the chair, and why is his flat screen TV not a proper aspect ratio, and who gives a..

  8. Episiarch   17 years ago

Chip Bok makes the humor gods cry.

  9. Elemenope   17 years ago

Chip Bok makes *all* Gods cry.

But we need the rain, so...

  10. Reinmoose   17 years ago

At this point I have to believe that it's intentional that Reason continues to pick completely unfunny political cartoons. I know they have a sense of humor, so are they just doing it for fun?

  11. ed   17 years ago

Lamer than lame. This is Tiny Tim lame.

  12. John-David   17 years ago

    I agree with Reinmoose.

  13. Episiarch   17 years ago

I know they have a sense of humor, so are they just doing it for fun?

So unfunny it's funny? That would be some quality meta-humor.

  14. Jim Bob   17 years ago

    /facepalm

  15. creech   17 years ago

Hey, it's Friday. The heck with this. Let's see Lobstergirl again!

  16. Elemenope   17 years ago

That would be some quality meta-humor.

    Meta-humor isn't funny, cause it's postmodern and therefore lib'rel.

    Pass it on.

  17. Jonathan Hohensee   17 years ago

At this point I have to believe that it's intentional that Reason continues to pick completely unfunny political cartoons. I know they have a sense of humor, so are they just doing it for fun?

It's kinda of like how the print version of The Onion carries the spanish-speaking version of Ziggy.

  18. SugarFree   17 years ago

The weirdest part of the whole Edwards thing has been running sort of quiet, in my opinion. Jay McInerney dated Druck/Hunter in the 80s and wrote a novel with her as the main character, Story of My Life. The character also appeared in two Bret Easton Ellis novels.

I'm rereading it now. McInerney made her out to be a pretty vapid coke-whore.

  19. Warren   17 years ago

Hey look at that! This humor in this cartoon is just like The Family Circus. Doesn't look good for Chip Bok.

  20. anon   17 years ago

Not funny at all. Cheating on your cancer-stricken wife.

  21. Art-P.O.G.   17 years ago

This humor in this cartoon is just like The Family Circus.

Or Marmaduke. Like observation instead of observational humor.*

*I just came up with a cartoon. A guy pulls up at a gas station and says, "Damn these prices are high!"

  22. Ethan   17 years ago

    Friday Funnies

    I see the "Friday" part...

Perhaps if a little more thought had been put in, a behavioral link between Edwards and an infant could have been found and the whole thing might have conveyed, say, an actual insight.

I just thought of about five things that would make this cartoon significantly less unfunny; unfortunately all five of them still are deeply unfunny, so I won't pass them along.

  23. Ethan   17 years ago

Well, maybe just one: have the baby crawling after a toy ambulance.

    Now was that so hard?

  24. Art-P.O.G.   17 years ago

Actually, Ethan your idea's pretty good. Edwards has an R/C toy ambulance and the baby's chasing after it and Edwards says, "That's my boy!". That might be worth a smirk.

  25. Anonymous   17 years ago

"Whoops! I forgot to tell a joke!"

  26. Elemenope   17 years ago

Cheating on your cancer-stricken wife. Not funny at all.

Approximately as funny as making other people's marriage problems your business.

  27. untermensch   17 years ago

Maybe the funniest thing is that he gave Edwards a mullet. But I think that's just part of the "poorly drawn" bit. I wouldn't have known it was Edwards without the label. Even with it I don't recognize Edwards in the drawing...

  28. Elemenope   17 years ago

Actually, Ethan your idea's pretty good. Edwards has an R/C toy ambulance and the baby's chasing after it and Edwards says, "That's my boy!". That might be worth a smirk.

See, Chip? And we don't even do this for a living.

Say, how *do* you make a living? It can;t be from this...

  29. Reinmoose   17 years ago

*I just came up with a cartoon. A guy pulls up at a gas station and says, "Damn these prices are high!"

For real - that's about as funny as this cartoon, although maybe even a little too funny for Friday Funnies.

  30. brotherben   17 years ago

Edwards? I thought it looked more like "the Donald."

  31. SugarFree   17 years ago

Say, how *do* you make a living? It can;t be from this...

He has a unfathomably complex economic relationship with negative blog comments. He's a millionaire.

  32. ed   17 years ago

I have a feeling the real Chip Bok is tied up in a basement dungeon in Milwaukee
with a ball gag in his mouth.

  33. brotherben   17 years ago

    ed,
sort of a BrokeBok mountin kinda thingy?

  34. EcoDude   17 years ago

Where's Paul Coker when you need him?

  35. Elemenope   17 years ago

I have a feeling the real Chip Bok is tied up in a basement dungeon in Milwaukee
with a ball gag in his mouth.

That sort of reminds me of an actually funny cartoon.

  36. Nigel Watt   17 years ago

Actually, Ethan your idea's pretty good. Edwards has an R/C toy ambulance and the baby's chasing after it and Edwards says, "That's my boy!". That might be worth a smirk.

Hell, I laughed visualizing that. I can't imagine how Bok eats.

  37. libertymike   17 years ago

    Chip Bok-

Its not all bad, look on the bright side(you certainly have not looked at the far side). After you are let go by Reason, you can still collect unemployment benefits as being dismissed for incompetence does not make one ineligible for the same.

  38. R C Dean   17 years ago

OH, I GET IT. THE KID LOOKS LIKE EDWARDS.

Apparently, Rielle's sister gave an interview recently in which she said the kid is the spitting image of Edwards.

Show of hands - does anybody think Edwards is telling the truth?

  39. R C Dean   17 years ago

Approximately as funny as making other people's marriage problems your business.

Well, a couple of things about this are our business.

    (1) The abject failure and transparent double standards of the MSM.

    (2) The lying and the coverup, which is ongoing and has been massive.

  40. Episiarch   17 years ago

does anybody think Edwards is telling the truth?

    Rhetorical question.

  41. joe   17 years ago

OH, I GET IT. THE KID LOOKS LIKE EDWARDS. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still don't get it. Could you dumb that down a smidge? I've never been big on that subtle comedy of manners stuff.

(I'm starting to think the title "Friday Funnies" is meant to apply to the comment thread).

  42. Elemenope   17 years ago

    RCD --

A person loses no points lying about something people have no business asking in the first place.

It should not be *necessary* to have a massive cover-up of a marital infidelity which has already resolved itself inside the marriage, but that's the sort of fucked-up voyeuristic puritanical culture we have. I cannot fault people (politicians or otherwise) for protecting whatever shreds of dignity and privacy they may have left by dicking with the info stream.

And as far as double standards, McCain has gotten pretty much a free pass on his dalliances. Edwards did too. Clinton *did not* get a free pass.

So what the hell are you talking about?

  43. joe   17 years ago

Edwards has an R/C toy ambulance and the baby's chasing after it and Edwards says, "That's my boy!".

Edwards is watching the kid crawl after a tow ambulance on TV, and thinks "Uh-oh."

    RC bemoangs:

The abject failure and transparent double standards of the MSM. I don't know, Bill Clinton was actually the president when the media freaked out over his affair. Edwards is a has-been with no political future who hasn't been in the media for months.

The lying and the coverup, which is ongoing and has been massive. Why is it my business that a nobody tried to cover up his affair? I'm not even sure it's my business when important people try to cover up their affairs.

    1. OO=======D   14 years ago

      LICK MY BALLS!

  44. brotherben   17 years ago

Clinton's faux pax was in doin the fat chick. Unconscionable behaviour for a man of his social and political status.

  45. Episiarch   17 years ago

The media sure didn't do any lying or cover-up with Spitzer, RC. To my great amusement. They fucking steamrollered him.

  46. J sub D   17 years ago

Lamer than lame. This is Tiny Tim lame.

Terri Schiavo lame even. Possibly DOA.

  47. Jamie Kelly   17 years ago

Jesus, you people are fuckin' harsh.
I thought it was pretty funny.
Then again, I spend most of my day licking my own balls.

  48. J   17 years ago

Worse than the low low average.

  49. J sub D   17 years ago

Show of hands - does anybody think Edwards is telling the truth?

[pensively rubs chin] Hmmm, lawyer, politician, moving lips....Nope.

  50. ed   17 years ago

Clinton's faux pax was in doin the fat chick

Yeah, but before Monica there were the Big-Haired Ladies.
    Never underestimate the Big-Haired Ladies.

  51. Atabrat   17 years ago

    Make it stop.

  52. Amakudari   17 years ago

A person loses no points lying about something people have no business asking in the first place.

I'd say it depends entirely on how pro-family a politician claims to be. Edwards did claim that moral purity to win votes, which puts his family man credentials under the microscope. If McCain starts talking up the traditional American family, he deserves whatever happens.

Full disclosure: I roomed with two Edwards campaigners two summers ago in Chapel Hill. It's really, really endearing how upset they are.

  53. mk   17 years ago

    Elemenope is right
This is what a political cartoon should be like

  54. Les   17 years ago

Okay, so who at Reason is going to defend the decision not just to pay Bok, but to print his cartoons? I really want to understand.

  55. R C Dean   17 years ago

Why is it my business that a nobody tried to cover up his affair?

A nobody? He won Iowa, he was on the shortlists for VP and AG until the National Enquirer published, and he's a nobody?

If he's a nobody, its because he had an affair, go caught, lied about it, and orchestrated a coverup of it.

I'm not even sure it's my business when important people try to cover up their affairs.

Some guy running a business, I don't care. Some guy grasping (for) the levers of power, its my business. Not that he has an affair, necessarily (although that tells me things about his character that I think are highly inapt for someone in public office) but that he will lie to the public about anything. Anything at all.

I don't know, Bill Clinton was actually the president when the media freaked out over his affair.

The MSM killed the story. Drudge is the one who broke it. So, yeah, the double standard was in effect then, too.

The media sure didn't do any lying or cover-up with Spitzer, RC.

That one, nobody could try to ignore or coverup.

We're talking about tendencies here - the MSM tends to be more reluctant to pursue and publish scandals that hurt Dems. Its not to say they won't report on Dem scandals, its just human nature. They give to Dems, they vote for Dems, they don't want to report bad news about Dems, but will when it can no longer be ignored.

  56. joe   17 years ago

A nobody? He won Iowa, Six months ago, which is one month longer than when he dropped out of the race.

he was on the shortlists for VP and AG until the National Enquirer published No he wasn't. What wingnut site did you get that from?

If he's a nobody, its because he had an affair, go caught, lied about it, and orchestrated a coverup of it. Uh, yeah, he became a political nonentity because, five months later, a scandal broke.

Some guy grasping (for) the levers of power, its my business. If this was January, and John Edwards was still a significant figure in American politics, this would be a story. In August 2008, it is less meaningful than if a City Councilor in Wilkes-Barre had an affair.

You know, the term "double standard" is used to describe a situation in which similar events are treated differently.

  57. Amakudari   17 years ago

No he wasn't. What wingnut site did you get that from?

CNN and AP? All the veep stuff is speculation anyway, but he had his name bandied about. Not that he would be a likely choice.

I'd hesitate to say he became a political non-entity as soon as he aborted his presidential bid. Certainly, Edwards became much less relevant, but I doubt that would have stopped him from campaigning for and probably attaining senior public office.

  58. ed   17 years ago

    Only the cute die young.

  59. stephen the goldberger   17 years ago

At first I thought the point was that Edwards has a babyface.

  60. R C Dean   17 years ago

If this was January, and John Edwards was still a significant figure in American politics, this would be a story. In August 2008, it is less meaningful than if a City Councilor in Wilkes-Barre had an affair.

joe, you still don't get it. The reason he's a washed-up has-been (for now) is because he got busted:

    (a) screwing a woman not his wife, after campaigning on his fabulous home life and devotion to his sick wife;

    (b) a woman who he put on the campaign payroll, by the way, and paid over $100,000 to;

    (c) lying about all that, and (in all probability) about fathering her child;

    (d) inducing others to lie about it;

Before the Enquirer story broke, he was heavily courted as a superdelegate endorser back in the primaries. He was being heavily promoted by the trial lawyers (and I'm sure others) as the next AG. He was very much not a nobody in Dem circles.

And, I must say, whether someone would engage in (a) through (d) above is very relevant to me in evaluating whether they can be trusted in positions of power.

C'mon, joe. Edwards is a scumbag, who got caught scumbagging. Your sticking up for (D) scumbags is why you have a reputation as a partisan around here.

Political Cartoon Even More Boring And Confusing Than Issue

  62. Francesco Sinbaldi   17 years ago

    Collection of flowers.

    The right rose
    appears in my mind,
    and everywhere
    shines when the
    soft wind remains
    in the light of
    a flower; the cold
    leaf is dead
    and here there's
    a shadow, the
    delicate dark and
    a loving profile.
