The adbrite inline ads were unintentional. They lasted about 6 hours overnight and are gone.

Most people probably don't know that the Iraq Men's National Team won the Asian Cup last week.

The team captain cautioned the Iraqis not to celebrate too openly as earlier spontaneous celebrations turned out to be tempting targets for terrorists.
The captain of the team took the opportunity of the win to say that the Americans should leave the country.
Of course, there is no reason why anyone should listen to a jock over someone else, but it put the whole "hearts and minds" thing into perspective.

According to the Daily Show, seven people died in the celebration, and that is in itself cause for celebration since it's rare that any event takes place in Iraq where only seven people die.

Oh yeah, we get Mythbusters as well. Didn't they conclude that a bullet simply falling vertically at terminal velocity won't kill you, but bullets fired at an angle would come down in a parabolic curve with lethal horizontal speed?

I recall them wheeling out a doctor who had dealt with a fatality where this had occurred. Well, he wore a white coat, anyway.

At least with real football the scores aren't "1-0" or "1-1" with what seems like an eternity between scores.

Look, I love basketball, and I can tolerate baseball, but American sports fans seem to be like mice pushing a lever to watch a little pellet fall out. Here's a "score"! And another "score"! And another! Feed me, feed me, feed me...

In soccer, it isn't all about the "scoring." Soccer fans love goals -- duh, of course. But one doesn't watch soccer to hit the lever and get another pellet. Goals are a big, big deal BECAUSE there's not an onslaught of them. Watching a game is about watching the game; there's so much more to it than being fed continual goals.

It's a whole different mindset than watching, say, an NBA game. And it's kind of hard to describe. Watch enough soccer, and it just sort of finally clicks. And once you get it, you're in -- and you realize just why so many billions of people are so engrossed with the sport.
