Sorry to stomp on your thread, Kerry...an American Hero has passed
    Wally Schirra Dead at 84

  3. Naval Aviation in Art   18 years ago

    he's been dead all day
and is likely to stay that way
kinda thin gruel on the hero front, too
    he didn't even kill anyone

  4. Dave   18 years ago

I'm going to sound about 50 years older than I actually am, but it's sad to realize that everyone can identify Paris Hilton, and almost nobody could have told you who was Schirra. Think about how many times in the past year you've seen achievment celebrated, other than pro sports.

On the topic of this thread, Kerry's got brains AND beauty. Sorry if I'm a little behind the curve with that info.

  5. NP   18 years ago

Kerry, I hate to be so hard on you again, but sharing the same pulpit with Rachel Marsden and Laurie Dhue? I'm sorry, honey. This gig was bound to fail.

  6. Bradylama   18 years ago

I tuned in around 1:31 just to see Kerry make a comment about speedwalking. That was it? Easy money, man.

  7. wayne   18 years ago

    Kerry,

You get my vote over those canines Marsden and Dhue any day.

  8. Guy Montag   18 years ago

G_d must hate me. The only time I have not been awake watching that show at 0200ish in the past several weeks was when Kerry was on 🙁

  9. Munchkin   18 years ago

If Marsden broke a leg, they'd have to put her down.

  10. ed   18 years ago

Talk is cheap. I want pictures.

  11. ron   18 years ago

all the cool people were in the theater getting disappointed by spider-man 3 at 2am

  12. Dan T.   18 years ago

You guys do realize that one of these days Kerry is going to have children and thus drop the libertarian act?

This will drop the percentage of libertarians who are female down to about .5%

  13. tarran   18 years ago

Are you saying that because she's a woman, Kerry thinks with her uterus?

Impressive. Not only ignorant, but sexist too.

  14. Dan T.   18 years ago

I'm suggesting that there's a reason that there are virtually no libertarians who are mothers.

  15. SugarFree   18 years ago

I think he's saying that people with kids are retarded.

  16. Urkobold?   18 years ago

Dan T. IS NOT EVEN A PIMPLE ON Urkobold's ASS.

THERE ARE A LOT OF PIMPLES ON Urkobold's ASS.
IS THERE A DERMATOLOGIST IN THE HOUSE?

  17. Lamar   18 years ago

I thought Kerry's performance was better than last time, and will probably get better in the future. I will say, however, that she really took a cheap shot at the unicorn lobby.

  18. William R   18 years ago

    She's a good looking woman

  19. thoreau   18 years ago

Yeah, I don't get why there might be a deficit of libertarian women. I mean, on the one side they've got people drooling over their looks rather than their ideas, and on the other side they've got people saying "Oh, she's going to get pregnant one of these days and then leave all this stuff behind. I know it."

Gee, I have no idea why women might not want to run with this crowd.

  20. Dan T.   18 years ago

thoreau, don't forget the open hostility towards any public policy idea that might be done "for the children".

  21. Doktor PokenLance   18 years ago

Kom hier... oh Ukroboldie. kom hier...

DrT: true, but even (especially?) the core group is guilty of that... sigh.

  22. Rimfax   18 years ago

    thoreau,

Don't mistake the crypto-paternalism of Dan T. for libertarian opinion. He's posting from under the bridge.

  23. thoreau   18 years ago

True, Rimfax, but the point is that she's stuck between droolers and trolls.

Let me guess, Dan, you'd be upset if somebody said of a career woman "Oh, you know she's going to get pregnant and leave all this behind!"

  24. SugarFree   18 years ago

Aside from thoreau's accurate observation, I think it also has to do with how most of us are exposed to libertarianism in a society that will never mention it except as an example of lunatics and fringe ideas. The right and the left both hate us, when they think about us at all. Liberals consider us stealth-conservatives and vice versa. It's never taught in schools, it's bizarrely connected to LaRouche and Rand turns off more people than she attracts (anecdotal to me). When you are exposed to it in mainstream society it's often someone soundbited into a rant about the gold standard or stoplights.

And then think about how a lot of people become libertarians in the first place. Everyone has their own experience, but I will baldly claim that I'm a SF libertarian, Heinlein specifically. A very awesome elementary school library gave me a battered hardback of Red Planet in the 4th grade and I went from there. What are other common paths? Tax-hatred? Disillusionment with mainstream parties? A tempering of youthful anarchism?

I am not trying to be insulting at all. I self-identify as a libertarian and vote that way. I wish there were more female libertarians, but the fact there are so few should not comes as much of a surprise to anyone.

  25. thoreau   18 years ago

BTW, in regard to my comment to Dan, I realize that a career is a bit different from a political philosophy. However, for people who make their living by writing about social, political, economic, and cultural matters, and who do most of their writing for particular publications, the career is directly tied to the viewpoint.

So saying "Oh, she's going to get pregnant and give up this silly idea!" is not so different from saying "Oh, she's going to get pregnant and leave this company!"

Dan, what would you say about a boss who didn't take a female employee seriously on the grounds that "Oh, we all know she's going to get pregnant and leave us!"?

  26. Dan T.   18 years ago

Let me guess, Dan, you'd be upset if somebody said of a career woman "Oh, you know she's going to get pregnant and leave all this behind!"

I don't know about being upset, but I'd wager that more women are both mothers and careerists than mothers and self-identified libertarians.

  27. Dan T.   18 years ago

I'm saying she's a token. Clear enough for ya?

  28. thoreau   18 years ago

I don't know about being upset, but I'd wager that more women are both mothers and careerists than mothers and self-identified libertarians.

Yes, but the same could be said of female membership in any small group. I'll bet that there are more women who are both mothers and careerists than mothers and Zoroastrians. I mean, look how few Zoroastrians there are in this world!

  29. thoreau   18 years ago

I'm saying she's a token. Clear enough for ya?

Saying that somebody is part of a small group is different from saying:
You guys do realize that one of these days Kerry is going to have children and thus drop the libertarian act?

The former is a statistical fact that nobody contests. The later carries all sorts of other connotations about it being "an act" or at least a delusion of some sort.

And even "token" carries all sorts of connotations that go way beyond statistics. It often implies a lack of talent that is tolerated for the purpose of demographic balance.

But let me guess, Dan, you think that you're far less sexist than us libertarians.

  30. Dan T.   18 years ago

I'm not saying at all that libertarians are any more sexist than anybody else.

But I do think that libertarian philosophy appeals mostly to well-off, white men for a reason.

  31. Dan T.   18 years ago

Kerry, assuming you read these comments I do apologize for bringing elements of your personal life into the discussion.

thoreau is correct, I was out of line on that one.

  32. Brian   18 years ago

I've seen Kerry's past Red Eye appearances on youtube and that has got to be one of the worst shows on TV. However I don't get FoxNews. Cable at all for that matter. What a bunch of garbage.

  33. ed   18 years ago

Women are too emotional to grasp abstract political concepts.
And their boobs get in the way of their backswing.
    Present company exempted.
    All one of you.

  34. SugarFree   18 years ago

Come on thoreau, libertarianism is popular with well-off white men. Surely you can't defend something those evil fuckers like. That's like siding with the DEVIL!

  35. Sandy   18 years ago

Hey, Kerry, go and tell Veronique de Rugy she doesn't exist, OK? I think she'll be surprised, but it sounds like the sort of thing she should know.

  36. Chucklehead   18 years ago

I will baldly claim that I'm a SF libertarian, Heinlein specifically.

Hehe... that's pretty much how I got here too. Cheers.

  37. Dave W.   18 years ago

I hadn't been reading Dan T.'s comments as much, but the thing about mothers not being libertarians is a zinger.

He seems to assume that mothers tend to have a different relationship with their children than fathers do, but, sexist as that may sound, I think there is a lot of truth in it.

    How many mothers shoot?

  38. Mike Laursen   18 years ago

I'm having trouble with the whole premise of this thread. I personally know both libertarian and Zoroastrian mothers.

  39. Prenatal vitamin user   18 years ago

I fail to understand why a woman would leave the Libertarian movement once she's a mother.

I fear my own behavior the first time a teacher, principal, school board member, etc dares to tell me how to raise my child.

I've been a pretty protective anti-establishment big sister, and I can only imagine the maternal kill instinct that will kick in when little Princess and Prince come home and tell me what their democrat/nanny teachers brainwashed them with.

And I'm sure by the time I have experimental teenagers, the laws will be insanely more restrictive than they are now, and I'd rather decide how to handle the drugs, pregnancies, and drama at home than let some idiot throw my kid in jail for life because he was on the wrong side of the age boundary by a few months.

    Bah!

  40. Jennifer   18 years ago

I'd wager that more women are both mothers and careerists than mothers and self-identified libertarians.

I'll wager that more men are both fathers and careerists than fathers and self-identified libertarians.

And maybe one of these days Dan will find a woman willing to have sex with him, and drop his troll act.

  41. Dave W.   18 years ago

And maybe one of these days Dan will find a woman willing to have sex with him, and drop his troll act.

You can have lots of sex and still troll just fine. Also, it seems like you are assuming something about Dan T. here.

  42. Jennifer   18 years ago

it seems like you are assuming something about Dan T. here.

Not as big as the assumption he made about Kerry. Also, I daresay my assumption can be backed up by more evidence than his, as demonstrated by the following chart:

REASONS TO BELIEVE KERRY REALLY WANTS TO HAVE A BABY: None, unless you assume possession of a uterus automatically connotes a desire for mommyhood.

REASONS TO BELIEVE DAN CAN'T GET LAID: For starters, how he behaves here.

  43. Jennifer   18 years ago

Actually, I suppose it's possible he gets a lot of sex of the "yes mistress I'm a miserable worm" variety. And when Mistress Dita isn't around to whip him, he gets his masochistic rocks off here.

  44. Dave W.   18 years ago

I was talking more about his proclivities. i seem to recall that this came up before.

Besides, I have no predictions to make about Kerry Howley in particular. I just think there is a noticeable trend at places like here and grylliade's where you don't see very many mothers. And the ones you do see seem kind of wishy-washy on hardcore libertarianism.

I thought it was interesting when that guy did those "nerdy couple" links, but they no longer actually come out and say who is dating who. Already Will seems to me like a hardercore lib than Kerry.

  45. David   18 years ago

    Dan,

Are you saying that once women give birth, they become consumed with a pathological need to control every aspect of everyone else's life in order to protect their children?

I'm sure you can come up with some anecdotal evidence of that, but most of the new mothers that I know sarcastically "wonder" how we ever survived to adulthood without the things they're told are necessities now.

  46. Timothy   18 years ago

    In my mind Dan is
    Lit ablaze like balsa wood
    Fire can kill a troll
