Has anyone else noticed that Jon Tester and Jim Webb, the golden boys of the Libertarian Democrats, are running against Burns & Allen? I'm glad to see George Allen proving himself every bit as ditzy as his namesake, but I'm disappointed in Conrad Burns, who seems intent on playing an airhead too. I thought Republicans knew the value of a good straight man.

When it comes to the comic stylings of Montana senators, give me Burton "Bert" Wheeler. When he wasn't fighting FDR's court-packing plans, he was doing a double act with Robert Woolsey.

I thought Conrad Burns was the persona assumed by John Robie (played by Cary Grant) in "To Catch a Thief." Except that Conrad Burns was purportedly a lumber magnate from Oregon, not a senator from Montana.
