Have people been following the actions of Obrador and other leftists in Mexico of late, for example, the seizure of government offices and radio stations by mobs in Oaxaca? Have these events led David Weigel to reconsider his "Don't Worry" hypothesis, or are they just flashes in the pan that will go no place?
Stay mellow.
Either Latin America will adopt freer markets (without crony capitalism) and thereby become mature economies with 'first world' societies or they will go leftish and never develop, staying miserable but impotent.
Either way, they will be no threat to the US, unless the US decides to meddle.
The larger story in Mexico - assuming, as I assume, nothing comes of the protests - is that Calderon won an election he was expected to lose by 10 points or more, and that polls say Obrador has utterly throttled his political future by constantly protesting.
its interesting to note that the mid....late eighties? (damn this Old Timers)Mexican election in which C. Cardenas (what you would call a "leftist") ran, HAS been shown to have been stolen from him & his party by the PRI, (you know, the "conservatives") - a election for the President of Mexico, overtly stolen by a corrupt political system- in this case, a oligarchy/police state.
Yet its not referenced in relation to the current fracasa?
Why is that, I wonder. Couldnt be because it lends wieght to Obrador's supporters, could it?
My talkin w/ political, educated Mexicans here suggest it was just a damn close race, and that Obrador is no Cardenas, who was the genuine article.
Sad stuff all around. We can be sure "interests" in the US will make sure thier "interests" in Mexico continue business as usual, which will continue to mean an honest man wont be able to feed his (too large) family, and will continue to be useful tools to collapse wages in the US.
If only it was Mexican CEO's sneaking thru the wire.....hell, Id give THEM $20/hr to run Ford.
