Leonard W. Levy, RIP

Leonard Levy, author of several seminal studies of the history of American civil liberties, has died at age 83. R.B. Bernstein reviews his life and work.

This is sad news. Back in the 1990's I saw Leonard Levy speak at a conference put on the by American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, of which he was a board member. Despite his own affiliation, he made sure to mention issues where he thought the ACLU took the wrong stand.

He is author of an outstanding series of books that examined the individual amendments that make up the Bill of Rights. We can hope other scholars carry on his work for constitutional liberty.
