Toons go smokeless; Tom to be covered in bandages, nicotine patches
Turner Broadcasting will go through its library of Hanna-Barbera cartoons to remove any scenes that might have the potential to glamorize smoking. The move comes after the British Office of Communications received a single viewer complaint, and will leave Tom the cat's Now, Voyager moment with a female pussy on the cutting room floor:
In the first, "Texas Tom," the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking it with one hand. In the second, "Tennis Chumps," Tom's opponent in a match smokes a large cigar.
"The licensee has … proposed editing any scenes or references in the series where smoking appeared to be condoned, acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation," Ofcom said, adding that "Texas Tom" was one such example.
[Turner Europe flack Yinka] Akindele said cartoons would only be modified "where smoking could be deemed to be cool or glamorized," and that scenes where a villain was featured with a cigarette or cigar would not necessarily be cut.
So that easily hoodwinked infielder for the Gashouse Gorillas appears to be safe…for now.
Thanks to Spike TV's Ryan Posly for the tip.

As opposed to Squidbilly Earl galmorizing gashuffing on Turner owned cartoon network's adult swim.
I have no idea what 12 oz mouse glamorizes nor do i even know what the fuck that show is about.
Wasn't Tom the villian in Tom & Jerry?
Smoking ban activists rewriting history.....what's new?
It should also come as no surprise that their funding comes from the nicotine patch company and their private foundation....the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

And you guys think that your vote doesn't count.
Turner Broadcasting...
CAAAAPTAIN PLAAAAANET!
"Protect the environment, or I'll fucking kill you!"
But Mommy, that's stupid! Cartoons can't get cancer.
Dropping anvils, pianos and other large objects on passerby, however, remains acceptable behavior.
In general, scrubbing cigarettes out of kid's cartoons seems like a good move to me if it results in even one less person taking up that tragic addiction-as long as it's not a government forced move.
(There; I got the right thread.)
Hey Math Guy,
Whatdya into? Wouldya lay some interesting math stuff on us, please? And/or perhaps recommend a book or article...
And I would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for those meddling kids!

I might be wrong, but this bit of reasoning seems to me to have critically failed to understand the way that children assimilate pop culture images. What makes them think that children wouldn't try to emulate the villain? Oftentimes, these characters end up with substantial cults and are quite a bit more popular than the heroes. That is, assuming Hanna-Barbara's villains aren't uniformly complete gimps. It's been too long; I don't actually recall.
Hail Hale. Which is it - kids will become dope smokin, bitch hatin, ho baggin pimps from watching gangsta rap bad-asses do it or they'll realize that smoking cigarettes is icky and gross (and way uncool) because only cartoon villain bad-asses do it?
Ted Turner can go straight to hell - and he can take his library of "colorized" monstrosities with him.
What's next? Replace Popeye's pipe with a sprig of asparagus?
Fuck Turner. Twice.
Smoking just got a bit cooler - keep at it, boys! Bang-up job.

Pardon me, but I must stop this thread to ask a related Warner Brothers-based question. Does anyone here view the Road Runner as the hero/protagonist of the Road Runner-Coyote shows? I mean, I don't know about the rest of y'all, but Wile E. Coyote, Ph.D. (Super Genius), friggin' rules in my book. And his perseverance and sheer brilliance makes him a great role model for kids. He's clearly a tragic hero, with really only one major flaw. No, not hubris. His flaw is, of course, his unshakable faith in the Acme Company.

Samuel Beckett.
Ted Turner has nothing to do with this. He merged/sold Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner about 10 years ago. So, don't be hatin' on Ted. Especially since Turner Classic Movies is the only channel I know of where you can watch uncut, uninterrupted movies in the proper aspect ratio.
Taking the smoking out of cartoons, the new bowdlerizing. Feh!
Armed and Hammered:
"What's next? Replace Popeye's pipe with a sprig of asparagus?"
There was a saturday morning Popeye cartoon series in the 80's in which Popeye tells his nephews that smoking is bad and explains he only keeps his pipe for "tooting".
Ted Turner has nothing to do with this.
I read somewhere else today (CNN?) that this only applies to cartoons shown on the Boomerang channel in Britain.

Hell no. I always wanted Wile E. to take that damn bird down, but it never happened.
I'd pay good money to watch a full-length feature film of Wile E. Coyote capturing, torturing, freeing, recapturing, retorturing, rinsing, and repeating the Road Runner as many times as necessary to get to two hours, then, finally, with great relish, consuming the Road Runner.

Oh, and I meant to add, cynically, that since great ideas like this always spread like wildfire, it's only a matter of time before American broadcasters see the light and demand smoke-free toons of their own.
PL, I'd buy a ticket to see that.
Not to go all Cathy Young here, but on the one hand I agree with Rick Barton.
But on the other, as a fan of classic animation, good design, and fun storytelling, I still think the uncut cartoons should still be available, if for no other reason than that they are a fantastic way to gauge the culture of a particular era.
Hopefully the un-cut, un-retouched ones will be available on You Tube by about 3pm this afternoon.
As part of the marketing campaign for Apocalypse Fowl, theaters will serve up fried roadrunner for their patrons. Thus, in some small way, each moviegoer can share the experience of killing and consuming the Road Runner.
...a full-length feature film of Wile E. Coyote capturing, torturing, freeing, recapturing, retorturing, rinsing, and repeating the Road Runner...
I love it. But if I had money to throw around financing show biz projects I'd have a hard time choosing between this and Cavanaugh's Jihadis in the Castro District from the 24 post.
Come on, Isaac, my idea transcends the generational divide and brings together all mankind in perfect harmony. And it promotes family values as well as roadrunner--the other, other white meat.
Plus we offer justifiable and righteously executed homicide (well, avicide)--always popular with American audiences.
Back when I was in college the just-off-campus- theater would show matinees of two hours of Roadrunner cartoons starting about halfway through finals week. Excellent way to clean the brain.
My sister-in-law in Guam requested photos of real roadrunners, as her friends there don't believe in them. "No way, man. It's just a cartoon."
For all you public health types with your approval of the motivation here: the real motivation is to exercise bigotry: demonizing smoking and, by extension, smokers, is the contemporary expression of that ancient human need: to dump on others. The claims to protecting health are the excuses for this mania, not the reasons.
Brett,
Smoking is really bad for you, but I'll defend to the point of substantial inconvenience your right to do it.
I think the Road Runner smokes--the jerk.
