Attn, DC Reasonoids: Flag-Desecration Amendment Forum, June 6
The Freedom Forum's First Amendment Center is hosting a forum on the moronic flag-desecration amendment that has already passed the House of Representatives and is only a few votes shy of passing in the Senate (then, if my Schoolhouse Rock memory serves, it's on to the states for ratification).
Details of the coming forum, which will be held 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the National Press Club's First Amendment Room (13th floor, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, D.C.):
Given the importance of such an amendment--it would be the first time in history that the Bill of Rights would be amended -- the First Amendment Center, a non-profit educational organization, has convened the program at the press club. In addition to the presentations and panel discussion, a special report on the flag amendment will be released. The First Amendment Center commissioned First Amendment lawyer Robert Corn-Revere to write the report, "Implementing a Flag-Desecration Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: An end to the controversy … or a new beginning?"
Appearing in the press club event:
Adrian Cronauer, a national director of the Citizen's Flag Alliance and co-author of the original story for the major motion picture "Good Morning, Vietnam!," who will present the argument on behalf of a flag protection amendment.
James H. Warner, former Vietnam prisoner of war and a former domestic policy adviser to President Reagan, who will argue against the amendment.
Robert Corn-Revere, of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP of Washington, D.C., who will discuss the legal and practical implications if such an amendment were approved.
Paul McMasters, First Amendment Ombudsman at the First Amendment Center, will moderate the presentations and a question and answer session afterward.

I have visions of protesters burning flags while singing "God Bless America". Cool.
Let's just make this clear. I'm an American. I'm proud of that, and I do have some respect for our symbols. But my nationalistic fervor ends where my freedom begins. Honoring symbols means nothing if what they stand for is lost in the process. Sure, desecrating the flag is offensive speech. So is a whole lot of other types of speech and speech/conduct. Why not ban anything that offends anyone? Personally, I'd like to ban talk about banning offensive speech 🙂
We needs the amendmint to protect the flags. Otherwise we are not free. Millions have died in wars fighting to protect the flag and we are not free enougth to have it protected. It dishonours the men what died to distroy the flag, we need to be and to have amendmint to protect the fag. Let freedom ring!
Will the burning happen before or after the Pro Acid Rain March?
PL: dontcha know that burning flags takes away from our freedom? like marriages involving teh gay. or people who only eat vegetables (!!!). if we believe it's going on, and it's icky, it should be banned.
such says the Book of Bork.
🙂
I meaned "protect the flag." not "protect the fag."
Well, there "Juanita", you can frankly write whatever the hell you want (whatever you meaned to say.) - typeos and all. I really doubt if anybody reads what you write for anything other than comic relief. Geraldine Ferraro is taken more seriously than thou.
this is what happens when the Peace Studies major is late for her job at the group home.....
sigh.
VM,
I wonder if secondhand smoke from burning flags is dangerous? I bet it is.
Prediction: if this atrocity passes, there will be a huge upsurge in flag burining.
After the amendment is ratified, what if I wear a t-shirt with a picture of someone burning a flag? Crime?
Discuss amongst yourselves.
I wonder if these right-wing morons understand that if they actually pass this piece of shit, many, many more flags are going to burn. The neo-hippies, who desperately crave attention, are going to get a national platform, ala the Cathy Sheehans of the world. And all people with more than half a brain are going to be forced to side with them.
It's really embarassing that we have a large population that cannot/will not grasp the nuance of symbolism, and what freedom truly means. Embarassing.
re: "we need to be and to have amendmint to protect the fag"
That is exactly the Godless liberal agenda I'm fighting against!
If this passes, I will be holding an 'all-flag-fueled' barbecue in Brooklyn shortly thereafter. BYOB. or BYOF.
MMMMmmm. Now that's patriotic burgeer...

Reason's first cover if and when an anti-desecration amendment is ratified should be of a burning flag. And of a burning Constitution, while you're at it.
Can I burn the ammendment in protest?
Can I burn the ammendment in protest?
Can I burn the ammendment in protest?
Can I burn the ammendment in protest?
No way did I post this 4 times. What's up with these friggin' servers???
Billy Ray, no matter how many times you and the server ask that question, the answer is still no. The anti-desecration amendment has a built-in self-anti-desecration feature defending its sacredness.

Re: Your treatment of Juanita
If you can't say something nice about someone, shut your pus dripping mouth. Okay, bitch?
- The Widow White
Good call, there, Widow.
Actually it should be "open sored, oozing, pus-dripping mouth", btw. But close enough.
Apart from that, thank you for your concern. And I thought people in contemporary American society today were cold, uncaring people.
Yea! That sentiment is untrue. It is an empty sentiment rendered impotent by you shining the bright light of truth onto pure human compassion and caring. Sooth! Your contribution has opened mine Eyes to the Truth of saying nice things.
I call for all Reasonoids to rise up in song, praising the Widow for the ukase of saying NICE! This shall henceforth be known as the Platnium Rule that Constantly Replenishes Our Depleted Pudding!
Hail Hail Ost Deutschland
Land of Vine and Grape!
I call for all Reasonoids to rise up in song, praising the Widow for the ukase of saying
Hear! Hear! A song for Widow White!
You are a moron
I'm glad to be here
Seeing the sight of you
Smelling the smell of you
You most deplorable glaring example
Of a degenerate narcotic influence
My seething hate is driving me nuts
What can I do to obliterate you
I snub you
I really hope you're one of a kind
You don't care who you brutalize
You are a bully plain and simple
You are a beast you are a pig
You've been a pig for long enough now
I'm making my move
I'm making an end to you
I snub you
And when I snub
I really snub
I snub you finally, forever
Is she really going out with him?
Now is the time
I'm playing my ate
I'll give you a mouthful you can't swallow
Unquestionably I've been lacking in taste
You're being cheerful but not for long
Your Mum and Dad they sure made a mess
You're going to look like watercress
When I snub you
He snubs you
We snub you
Dogs snub you
I snub you

If you dont have the right to burn that flag then the flag doesnt stand for anything.
Pro Libertate, that was brilliant!
Thanks, thoreau, but proper credit must go to the Blues Brothers, the creators of the Rawhide theme song, and most importantly, to our local trolls, who were an inspiration, every step of the way.
PL -
Don't forget to thank God.
If there's only one thing I know - it's that God cares about entertainment and sporting events.
SixSigma, okay then, I thank God, too. Though I hope he doesn't get pissed at me if he didn't have anything to do with it. Honestly, God wouldn't have cheated on the rhyming scheme just to sneak in the word "tirade".
If you support this amendment you are too stupid to be allowed to vote. or live.
