God this site sucks since V.P. left 🙂

In two months Dubya has lost the Christian-right and the hill-bignorants.

Castles made of sand melt into the sea, eventually.

"The Dixie Chicks' new album debuts at #1 in Billboard's pop and country charts."

Proving once again that when it comes to music, most people don't know rat shit from Rice Krispies.

  4. Clean Hands   19 years ago

Heh. So now a bunch of haters are going to have to listen to their politically-motivated purchase, and will realize, Hey, this really.... sucks.

  5. Andrew Ian Dodge   19 years ago

And how fast is the album going to plummet down the charts next week?

  6. jf   19 years ago

Every week's Billboard pop and country album charts simply prove that crap floats.

  7. zach   19 years ago

    Melts.

  8. me   19 years ago

    "hill-bignorants?"

Seriously, was "hill-billy" not derisive enough?

  9. Big Dark Willy   19 years ago

    I LOVE the Dixie Slits!

  10. rhywun   19 years ago

I heard them on Howard Stern, and while it's not my cup of tea, they honestly sound better than most of the other crap that lights up the charts these days.

    Well-put, mg.

    I like Rice Krispies.

  12. NoStar   19 years ago

I did a search for them on the internets and got a site called Chicks with Dicks (definately not work safe.) Damn this lysdexia.

  13. smacky   19 years ago

    NoStar,

ROTFL! Stop. It hurts. It hurts.

The Dixie Chicks' new album debuts at #1 in Billboard's pop and country charts.>/i>

That's cool. And if I may take this opportunity; another distaff band is doing an anniversary tour this summer...! It's the Go Go's !
And they still have the New Wave beat!

    Then:

    More recently:

This is the 25th anniversary of Beauty And The Beat- #1 US; 4x Platinum. The tour winds up at the Greek Theater in LA, where they started. Love em!

  15. Jim Walsh   19 years ago

The Dixie Chunks, eh? Well, at least it's not Shit-nia Twain...

  16. Charles Oliver   19 years ago

    Jesse,

Earlier this year, you pointed out that the Chicks didn't say they were ashamed that they're from Texas. (It still surprises me how many people I've met who think that's what they said.)

But it seems to be that "Lubbock or Leave It" comes pretty close to saying that they are ashamed to be from Texas, or at least one part of it, assuming that the lyrics actually represent their feelings. And that is, I think, a safe assumption.

Maybe Natalie just wasn't clear enough three years ago?

  17. Douglas Fletcher   19 years ago

All the great country music pioneers are probably snoring in their graves about this.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  18. coarsetad   19 years ago

Its hard to either love or hate Texas. It's really a crap-cookie with a core of gold. Meaning: If Houston became part of Louisana, Dallas part of Oklahoma, and San Antonio part of Mexico... the rest of the state would kick-ass.

  19. Rick Barton   19 years ago

Doesn't anyone wanna talk about the Go Go's?

(Jesse's gonna kill me if I don't cool it)

  20. rm2muv   19 years ago

I think it's great that the Dixie Chicks, having weathered the storm brought on by earlier comments, passed on the opportunity to pretend that they had been changed by the mindless flap in order to further their career. What a bitch-slap for all the chicken-hawks who supported the idiotic adventure in Iraq. I've got much more respect for the Dixie Chicks standing up for their own right to speak out than for the coward in office that made sure he avoided Vietnam but continues to send real men to die in a war our country should never have been in.

  21. jb   19 years ago

Folk is left-wing country, and country is right-wing folk. The Dixie Chicks will live on in some form.

  22. SmokingPenguin   19 years ago

Rick Barton: The GoGo's are much better than the Dixie Chicks. The only depressing thing will be going to the concert and seeing a bunch of 30-40 year old women wearing leg warmers.

  23. Rick Barton   19 years ago

    SmokingPenguin,

I think that they've gotta be, at least, in thier early-mid 40's. But they look pretty nice. So are you really gonna catch em? They did a show here in Demver about a year ago, but I don't thisk that they're gonna be here for this tour. LA and the Greek Theater might be calling me...LA has lotsa other charms anyway.

  24. The Wine Commonsewer   19 years ago

Thanks No Star. Bad enough to spit good cab out my nose all over the monitor, but I woke both kids up as well. 🙂

I gotta say that I like a lot of the kind of country that Jesse doesn't (and vice versa). Never cared much for the Dixie Chicks and Natalie Manes is a NOTTIE. The other two ain't bad though.

Smoke: Agreed the Go-Go's are much better than the Dicksey Chicks.

You know who was hot was that Susanna Hoffs chick from the Bangles. Matter of fact, the Bangles were better than the Dicksey Chicks and the Go-Go's.

BTW, the Go-Go's will be at Pachanga Casino for those of you ensconced in So Cal.....Saw the billboard today.

Rick B, you should hook up with my old buddy Rick H who is a recent transplant to Denver and actually writes libertarian leaning op-eds for the local rag. Good guy. Just got a note from him about something called Looney Tunes wine dinner at a place called Opus in Littleton. Sounded like a great time.

  25. Rick Barton   19 years ago

    The Wine Commonsewer,

Yeah, she wae quite cute for sure.

Cool. Just have Rick H email me. Which local rag? I'll check out Opus. I live in the Littleton Area.

  26. Mr. Nice Guy   19 years ago

For quite some time I heard the name "Dixie Chicks" and thought, wow, these girls must be really hot, because
    1) they're country singers (let's ignore the fugly Judd) and
    2) they have a sassy name

Jeeze, when I finally saw what they look like, I'm like "what the fuck?!"

And that stunt they pulled in London was totally obnoxious. Yes, our country has a lot of problems, and people have plenty to bitch about, but for Christ's sake, keep it in the family. You don't go to another country and take a cheap-shot, especially if it's nothing more than pandering (what, did they expect that they would be getting boos from Euro-trash?!). If they had any balls they would've came out in Nashville. No, they were only going for some cheap applause, and they paid dearly for it.

So now they're California folk singers, ripping off Fleetwood Mac. Odds are they'll live in the Castro district, and spend the rest of their career dissing the white trash that gave them their big break. Thanks for nothing.

  27. rdkraus   19 years ago

If you like "pop" type music, the DC's are pretty good, better than alot of the rest of what's out there.

Kudos to them for not backing down, and re-marketing themselves. They basically told country to stick it, and re-marketed themselves to a pop "liberal" audience (who loved their political views), and opened at #1, with lots of help from IMUS, who can sell just about any kind of book or CD.

  28. FatDrunkAndStupid   19 years ago

I think the jury is still out on how much of a price they'll pay for what Maines said. Debuting at #1 isn't all that hard when you consider the competition and the fact they were given a cover on Time, a 60 Minutes Feature, and countless free publicity on various shows like Imus and others. The question is how well the total sales match up to their previous records. Watching Larry King last night, I also don't think you can dismis the effect the the other two girls have on the perception of the group as a whole. Yeah Maines comes off as an obnoxious bitch, but the other two, in addition to being quite hot, come off as sweet as can be. They're everything Maines is not. So do fans punish Robison and Maguire just because they hate Maines? I've never been a fan (all I know of their work is that dreadful Fleetwood Mac cover), but if I were, it would be something to think about, especially since Robison and Maguire where the ones who started the band in the first place.

  29. Charles Oliver   19 years ago

I don't know about that. Maguire, who is IMHO the hottest of the Chicks, has also done her share lately of bashing country music, country radio and country fans. IIRC, she was the one who made the remarks about appearing on "The View" and quickly apologized for them.

Can't recall if her sister, who for some reason always gets singled out as the hot one, has said anything that might rile people. Though I could be misremembering some things she said as things her sister said.

  30. anna   19 years ago

Emily is the hot one. She always has been. She was drop dead gorgeous in high school, even though that's when the Chicks (sans that chunky bitch Natalie) were in their fringe and denim phase.

  31. The Wine Commonsewer   19 years ago

    chunky bitch LOL

  32. SmokingPenguin   19 years ago

Rick Barton -(if you're still reading) I might, if they come down to Central Florida and the prices are reasonable. (e.g., $25 or less). If they have another super 80's band opening for them, that'd be a bonus.

Speaking of blasts from the past, I saw a Berlin / General Public show a couple years ago. Very nice, but GP could have done "Save it for Later" in addition to "Mirror in the Bathroom" from their English Beat days.

  33. Jon H   19 years ago

Mr. Nice Guy writes: "If they had any balls they would've came out in Nashville. No, they were only going for some cheap applause, and they paid dearly for it."

It was said in England because that's where the tour started, and the Idiot War was about to start (or had just started).

    It was about timing.

And Americans are free to speak at all times, in all places. Fuck your "keep it in the family" face-saving pussy bullshit.

  34. Jon H   19 years ago

Fat Drunk Stupid wrote: "s. The question is how well the total sales match up to their previous records. "

Apparently the first week was about 1/3 less than the prior CD. 500,000 compared to 700,000.

Which is really quite good considering the corporate country thought police kept them from getting any airplay.
