"Drag Me Through the Hell-Slime, Mama, Satan—"

|

Publishers and pregnant people prepare for 6/6/06:

One pregnant woman, Francesca Renouf, said she had been so worried that she had booked a doctor's appointment to ensure that she would avoid giving birth on the sixth.

Others appeared to take the dangers less seriously. One woman, Emma Parker, wrote that she intends to call her baby Damien, after the satanic boy in The Omen….

Crown Forum, a US publishing giant, has seized on 666 as the perfect date for the launch of Godless, a new anti-liberal political polemic by Ann Coulter, a prominent right-wing columnist.

On a related note, the BBC has published an interesting article about "tritones, a musical interval that spans three whole tones, like the diminished fifth or augmented fourth. This interval, the gap between two notes played in succession or simultaneously, was branded Diabolus in Musica or the Devil's Interval by medieval musicians." Today it's frequently used in—where else?—heavy metal.

  1. “Drag Me Through the Hell-Slime, Mama, Satan”

Isn’t that a line from a Billy & the Boingers song?

  2. SR-I was on the classic album “Lick my Love Pump.” Who can forget the timeless rock poetry:
Let me graze into your veldt
    Let me stomple your albino
Let me nibble on your buds,
    I’m your Love Rhino.

  3. “It”, not “I”

  4. It’s also the day our “brave” Senate is scheduled to vote on the Constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in the U.S.

Another sign it’s a SOP to those ultra right wingers looking for Jesus in tree bark patterns I guess.

  5. One of my good friends who’s a promoter is having a lot of difficulty finding heavy metal bands to play his 6/6/06 concert that he is planning. This is because some of the bands he’s interested in getting are getting 3 or 4 or more requests from different promoters to play their evil concerts.

  6. Has anybody ever explained why the Beast needs a
number? Is he/she on Social Security or something?

  7. I think that interval makes up the main guitar riff in Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People.

  8. Probably the most famous example of such an interval is the intro to Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”…

  9. ‘Billy and the Boingers’ is an abomination created by the stifling cultural mores of the religious right.

    It’s a Deathtongue song.

  10. The diminished fifth is a jazz standard.

  11. Ironically, Diabolus In Musica is the title of Slayer’s weakest album.

  12. “Has anybody ever explained why the Beast needs a
number? Is he/she on Social Security or something?”

    Because math is hard.

  13. Has anybody ever explained why the Beast needs a
number? Is he/she on Social Security or something?

Because he’s actually a dead Roman emperor.

  14. The Truly Evil number is “Bob’s” number “13013”, divided by 666 = 19.5390390390390… because it never ends.

  15. The BBC article was great. I understand them mentioning Black Sabbath & Slayer in that context, but where were Merciful Fate & Venom? Is there no love for them just because they suck?

  16. Has anybody ever explained why the Beast needs a number? Is he/she on Social Security or something?

    It’s the other way around.

  17. “The diminished fifth is a jazz standard.

Comment by: Curmudgeon at May 3, 2006 01:13 PM”

    just wing that mother!

  18. Everyone remember to observe the national day of Slayer! (If you’re at work, make sure your speakers are turned down.)

  19. I am very proud of the fact that 666 is in my Soc number.

Please remember to vote for me this November. I can’t initiate the Apocalypse without YOU!

  20. Tim,

    What’s your opinion of libertarianchristians.org?

I wonder if there are libertarian satanists, or discordianists.

    Ah well, in excelsis diablo

  21. The perfect fifth is the key interval in the “power chord”, which HAS to be more prevalent than the diminished fifth. Especially the farther back you go.

Two interlocking diminished fifths make up a Dominant Seventh with a flat fifth- a jazz staple. Also, check out Bartok’s piano etuds, there’s one built around the diminished fifth . ..

  22. An article about tritones with no mention of Slint? Or the mighty Flipper?

    Philistines.

  23. Others appeared to take the dangers less seriously. One woman, Emma Parker, wrote that she intends to call her baby Damien, after the satanic boy in The Omen….

I worked with a guy named Damien. His mother went in labor while seeing The Omen. So she named him Damien because she thought “it was a hell of a time to have a baby.”

  24. Sorry, Philistine, but Slint is much less cool than Voivod. Both are less cool than Alchemist.

    God, I’m such a nerd.

  25. I’m about to make an obvious observation, but it’s really 6/6/2006. So if dates could even have mystical power to begin with this whole business would be meaningless. This is bugging me.

    Doc:

“It’s also the day our “brave” Senate is scheduled to vote on the Constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in the U.S.

Another sign it’s a SOP to those ultra right wingers looking for Jesus in tree bark patterns I guess.”

If there ever is an apocalypse, it will be on our (human) heads and no one else’s!

  26. I wonder if there are libertarian satanists, or discordianists.

Yes, there are Libertarian Discordians. More Green/Progressive Discordians though, in my experience.

  27. Back in law school, a bunch of us cooked up the best prank never played. Five guys were going to dress up as the heavy metal band “Belial and the Black Mass.” I was going to get a suit with a tiny miniskirt and put white streaks in my red hair, to be the band manager. We would go to a Dallas megachurch and I’d ask to rent the place for a concert, guaranteeing $10,000 plus 5 percent of the gate and concessions. We would then wait and see the preacher sweat the offer. We decided against it when one of us concluded that they’d probably take the deal. Now, maybe we could get back together for that one day.

  28. Something that I find to be a disconcerting sign of these times is that the govt took some nutcases’ complaints seriously enough to change US 666 in New Mexico to US 491. I mean come on, people!

  29. “Fools! 616 is the real number of the beast.”

    Doh!!!!

  30. Well, first of all, the year is 2006 AD, not 6 AD, so they are basically scaring themselves to death over a date format.

  31. I’m no theologian, but don’t some historians believe that the so-called number of the beast as it’s currently known to be: 666 was based upon a possible transcription error?

Ishmael didn’t proofread his copy before running down to kinko’s?

  32. Hey: Libertarians invented Discordianism.

As for the 666/616 business, it’s mentioned in the article. Didn’t one of us blog about that when the story came out? (And wasn’t there some doubt about whether the story was accurate? Or am I mixing this with something else?)

  33. My mom tried to get me to play the discordian, but I never stuck to it. Too many keys and buttons. Plus, as I got older, discordianism seemed so… corny.

  34. …is this thing on?

  35. re: 666/616, the short articles linked above by Evan and Iron Lungfish are interesting for their blatantly contradictory readings of the same evidence. I find the account linked by Iron Lungfish more persuasive.

  36. “Plus, as I got older, discordianism seemed so… corny.”

I think that’s one of the main tenets of the religion. I wish Christians could be so self-knowing.

  37. Sorry, Philistine, but Slint is much less cool than Voivod. -the other Mark

I haven’t listened Voivod for years. I think that “The Outer Limiits” is the last album I bought. I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing or a good thing.

  38. I wonder if there are libertarian … discordianists.

    Yo.

  39. I wonder if there are libertarian … discordianists.

    Yo.

  40. I wonder if there are libertarian satanists

    There are some fascist satanists.

the govt took some nutcases’ complaints seriously enough to change US 666 in New Mexico to US 491…

Isn’t that the highway that runs through Death Valley? You’d think that would be the perfect evidence of what the Christians were trying to say. The fire and brimstone ones, anyway.

  41. I thought the Number of the Beast was 1-900-HOT-BEAST.

  42. Not Death Valley. Gallup. Formerly US 666 used to have some of the highest fatalities per mile in part due to it being illegal to have alcohol on the reservation. Want alcohol? Gotta drive (or walk) a bit to get it.

  43. Loved the Bloom County call-back.

“We accidentlly plugged Bill’s tongue into the amp.”

“I don’t think he was grounded.”

“He’s not dead again is he?!?”

“No, no, I’ll get the bactine…”

  44. That’s a Bloom County reference!

I used to get busted for reading the early Breathed anthologies in elementary school. I got about 2/3 of what I was reading.

  45. On a different note, I wonder if I may ask for some advice. I’m really worried about the guy who has moved in next door…

  46. OK, since no one else did…
