Not sure who Tom Torlakson is, but if Don Perata has publicly withdrawn his support, that's a big deal. For readers outside California, Perata is the president of the California Senate and often described as "the second most powerful politician in the state".

If Reiner should be punished for his role in the First 5 financing scandal, then Bush should be impeached for paying off media hacks to spread the word on his programs. Anyone who says otherwise is a steaming pile of dung.

My point is that incumbants' usage of taxpayer monies runs far deeper than the president.

Rob Reiner is the appointed head of a state commission. The fact that he as a private citizen effectively invented the position does not absolve himself of his public responsibilities now that he has it.

Imagine the outrage if some Right-to Life group siphoned off $800 million in tobacco funds to support public sevice ads touting the benefits of adoption over abortion. Boy Howdy, the LA Times woulda jumped on that. Like a year ago, when the Reiner misappropriation allegations first surfaced.
