I would add, Mr. President, that there is a difference between responsible criticism that aims for success, and triumphalism that refuses to acknowledge anything but success. Good intentions alone are not wisdom. And deflecting criticism in the name of patriotism is the traditional excuse for bad policy.

I'm not engaging in hindsight when I criticize the war. I knew it was a dreadful mistake from the get-go. Told everyone I knew. Bitched about it constantly. Nobody gave a shit what I thought. In fact, the government made it very clear it didn't give a shit what I thought. How do you figure I am remotely responsible for cleaning up the mess?

They didn't want my opinion or my help in 2003 and they sneered that they didn't need my fucking support. So they don't get it now, Lou.

In case you're interested, I don't know whether we should pull out--personally, I'm inclined to stay for the time being.

However, regardless of whether the President wants us to stay or leave in the near future, I think we should be skeptical of his proposals. ...and that's because I think the President's incompetent.

I believe his behavior in office demonstrates this incompetence, and I think his bogus justifications for the occupation of Iraq are an excellent example of that incompetence. ...and even if the President called me "unpatriotic", all day long, I woldn't stop pointing out his leadership failures, to every American I could get to listen.

I consider it my patriotic duty. Tell me, what should a patriotic American do if he or she thinks that Presidential incompetence is at the heart of our problems? I consider it un-American to ask Americans--even the skeptics--to call it like they see it. ...That's right, "un-American"! I'm so grateful that our founders, in their great wisdom, sought to protect us from Presidents like this. ...Presidents like this and their supporters.
