The weird case of disgraced cloning superstar Hwang Woo-Suk gets a bit weirder:

An Internet fan cafe for professor Hwang Tuesday conveyed the willingness of over 1,000 women to donate their ova for the research, expressing their support of the South Korean cloning pioneer.

The online community, named "I love Hwang Woo-suk," has said that the number of women who promised to donate their eggs through the cafe and other organizations surpassed the 1,000 mark.

I'd assumed that outlawing payment for eggs would guarantee a shortage, but I guess any scientist who attains rock star status among fertile Koreans can count on a steady supply.

On the subject of cloning, most Koreans know that Hwang Woo-Suk kicked ass, and generally are in support of Korean clone ass-kicking. Whatever the state of the Korean anti-cloning crowd is, they are totally overwhelmed by the Korean clone cheerleaders.

If they hear something is good, they all go wild for it... without doing much research or raising much question...
In this case Prof. Hwang's achievement wasn't praised so much for his accomplishment, but more so because he gave the credits to the country.
So, many of the Koreans now criticize the opposed for ruining Prof. Hwang and Korea's reputation.
The 1000 willing women are giving the eggs out of pride... They don't know how much pain or complications that it can lead to...
Kinda sad really, being a Korean myself... to watch them moved by a government conspiracy.

Each egg donated decreases a woman's chances of conceiving her own offspring with the eggs nature gave her. What are you not getting about that?

Oh, and in case you aren't aware (and you probably aren't) donating eggs is a procedure that lasts for months, during which a woman is hormonally stimulated to bring additional eggs to maturity from the store she has. It's not like they harvest them one at a time, guys.

I'm not against egg donation/IVF/etc, of course. I'm very suspicious of it being done for national pride, where the women involved may not understand what they're actually volunteering for.

Korea's fertility rate is something like the lowest in the world -- 1.17, if not lower. It's probably not like they have much intention of using those eggs. http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200505/200505080019.html

Sort of on the Korean side, though -- does anyone know if Dr. Hwang really is disgraced at home in Korea? The article linked above only referenced what looks like some sort of international organisation, rather than, say, his labs and his stunning domestic popularity. (Though those may have been taken too.)

Dr. Hwang is not nearly disgraced here. In fact, the major backlash has been against the network that went after him, MBC. Even though I support the networks report, they didn't exactly do this on the up-and-up. The public has taken to boycotting them, calling for sanctions, etc... Most of the things you'd expect to be against Dr. Hwang, instead of the messenger. The Korean's really, really love the Dr. His research has caused a great sense of pride here and he is an icon more or less.

I've seem more sentiment against his colleague from Pennsylvania, I can't recall his name, than against Dr. Hwang. The newspapers are even kind of playing this in a way to suggest he used Dr. Hwang to get a Nobel prize and then when he was associated with him enough, he disassociated himself from him.

Korean scandals are always most interesting things to watch....
