Is Reason Becoming the Susan Lucci of the Western Publications Association "Maggie" Awards?

I'm happy to report that Reason is yet again a finalist for a Western Publications Association "Maggie" Award in the Politics & Social Issues category. The other finalists are HIV Plus, Mother Jones, Sierra, The Advocate, and The Sacramento Union.

Congrats to the other finalists. Mother Jones took home top honors last year.

This marks the third or fourth straight year that we've been a finalist. Yet like soap queen Susan Lucci, we realize we may be years--even decades--away from taking home the prize.

HIV Plus, Mother Jones, Sierra, The Advocate, and The Sacramento Union

Not a lot of libertarian thought in that bunch. You might hope for them to split the trendy-lefty vote and you will come out on top ... although they probably have some wacky proportional representation scheme to nix that.

    Best of luck.

There appears to be a "be" missing in the post.

Yet like soap queen Susan Lucci, we realize we may [be]years--even decades--away from taking home the prize.

Don't want to nit pik, but it reads very awkward.

    Corrected.

I am a world-class cheapskate and year after year I continue to renew my subscription to Reason. My money is better than an award nobody has heard of before.

Reason and All My Children. Hmmmm.

"I'm happy to report that Reason is yet again a finalist for a Western Publications Association "Maggie" Award in the Politics & Social Issues category."

For the June issue. Which article?

  6. Warren   21 years ago

Well, after a ten-minute perusal of the nominees, it's plain to me that the 'maggies' exhibit a heavy LGBT influence. I find the number of nominations bestowed upon NAILS particularly amusing. I note that finalists are not nominated for the sum total of their annual output, but rather on the strength of individual issues. (Thus allowing three of the six finalist spots in the category of 'Best Single Editorial Photograph/Consumer' to go to Natural Health, for instance.) Reason earned a finalist spot for its June issue. That was the one with the much ballyhooed individualized 'We know where you live' covers. It's also worth noting, that the June issue featured an article on gay marriage, it was appended as follows:
Jonathan Rauch is a columnist for National Journal, a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, and a writer in residence at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. This article is adapted from his book Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America. Copyright ?2004 by Jonathan Rauch. Maybe you should change your publication's name to Martin Scorcese.

(I know I probably spelled his name wrong. I don't know why it's so difficult for me!)

A note on the Maggies: Magazines are represented in the Politics & Social Issues category on the basis of a single issue from the year's run. We're represented, as D Angelhone notes, by our June issue, which is online here.

Preliminary non-sore-loser rationalization: We prefer to stay in the game-who's heard anything from Susan Lucci since she finally won?

  10. Douglas Fletcher   21 years ago

    She's awful.

  11. Virginia Postrel   21 years ago

Reason became the Susan Lucci of the Maggies one year in the early 1990s, when we were finalists for awards in five or six different categories and didn't win a single one.

  12. asd   21 years ago

The awards may show "a left-wing bias", but please don't pooh-pooh Mother Jones because of their bias. Reason is also quite biased, and, like MJ, has excellent reporting and analysis. Unlike Reason, it has absolutely astounding photojournalism.
