It's Official: Ashcroft is a Better AG than Songwriter
Good Lord! In the words of Frank Zappa, the torture never stops with this crew, does it? It is wonder the Capitol is still standing after that rendition of Ashcroft's Let the Eagles Soar from the steps of the building.
I'll give GWB a third term if he promises never to let that song loose on the American public ever again. Wow!

So are like people actually watching the bread and circuses routine?
Has Lee Greenwood made an appearance? Republicans can't take a dump without him playing in the background.
Brian,
What is it with Republicans and B-list musicians? 🙂

Jeff, you are way too generous. GWB should be impeached now for allowing Asshat to even open his mouth!

Maybe it's the Republican version of a Maya Angelou poem.
Yeah, although it was better than anything that vile Angelou creates, it was just a wee bit twee. I didn't cringe much as it was sung. I think the first one co-written by Orrin Hatch was a bit less lame.
somebody up there is "Asleep At The Wheel"
Why is Angelou "vile?" You got something against I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings?
Yo, Andrew Ian, how many Pulitzers have you been nominated for? How many American Book Awards have you won?
It's sort of pathetic that you'd deny yourself the appreciation of quality art for political reasons.
How many awards did Moby Dick win? Awards are no great measure of art.
Name a winner of the American Book Award that was "vile."
I'm not a big fan of Angelou's poetry, but I would hardly call her vile.
I've always thought the main difference between Angelou and, say, Langston Hughes is that Hughes would have had a writing career even if he HADN'T been victimized all his life.
Jennifer,
for that comment alone, I vow to worship you the rest of my days, my goddess of cynicism.
Acolyte-
If only more men had your wisdom.
Preach it, Sister Jennifer!
Please, people, I was not try ing to level any artistic criticism.
I was merely making the observation that Democrats like May Angelou's poetry and Republicans like cheezy flagwaving ersatz country songs. Nowhere did I state my opinion of either genre.
Whoa, what's with all the hatin' on Maya Angelou? Wasn't anybody moved by her Butterfinger endorsement?
And I forgot. Her Pennzoil spot is even better.
Tim Cavanaugh,
As I recall, Angelou loved that skit.
There has always been speculation that Angelou's "memoirs" are fiction. After my many years with gender feminist, lesbians and therapy junkies, I'm inclined to believe that it is a crock of crap. As to Ashcroft's anthem, "As the Eagles Weep" imbues me with a sense of pathos. Ashcroft is just too pathetic to mock. As for Angelou, well, "A tree, a rock, a clown" is just one of those prank poems punkers submit to Poetry Slam.
"What is it with Republicans and B-list musicians?"
You'd think they could at least get Ted Nugent to play at their rallies. Or better yet - Nugent to play "Let The Eagle Soar."
Josephus,
Surely you're smart enough to know the winning the "American Book Award" means nothing - Arafat can win a Nobel and Duranty a Pulitzer. Surely you wouldn't stoop to using such a silly arguments. Oh, wait, you did.
"The American Book Awards were established in 1978 by the Before Columbus Foundation to recognize outstanding literary achievement by contemporary American authors, without restriction to race, sex, ethnic background, or genre. The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge the excellence and multicultural diversity of American writing."
You can find a list of winners of this 'prestigious award' (they're always prestigious, aren't they) at

An analogy: Angelou is to black poets as Christina Crawford is to white novelists.
