Let Me Repeat It One More Time
Describing the reaction at CBS to Louis Boccardi and Dick Thornburgh's report on the discredited 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bush's National Guard Service, The New York Times says: "Seeking to cling to a thin reed, several CBS employees said they they took heart that the panel had found that no political bias existed within the ranks of '60 Minutes'--a charge that had been widely repeated on the Internet." This reed is even thinner than the Times makes it seem, since Boccardi and Thornburgh did not exonerate producer Mary Mapes or the other staffers who had a hand in the report of political bias. Insisting on a higher standard of proof than CBS News demands, they simply said "the panel cannot conclude that a political agenda at '60 Minutes' Wednesday drove either the timing of the airing of the segment or its content." But it strains credulity to suggest that anything like this level of carelessness and deception--including a lack of "even the most rudimentary fact-checking" (as the Times puts it) and repeated assertions that the memos supplied by Bill Burkett had been authenticated by experts when they hadn't been--would have been reached if the target had been John Kerry.

*AHEM*
It would have been worse if it was Kerry.
Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week.
The New York Times says: "Seeking to cling to a thin reed, several CBS employees said they they took heart that the panel had found that no political bias existed within the ranks of '60 Minutes'--a charge that had been widely repeated on the Internet."
and so the self-deception continues. i wonder if the times thinks that they're "unbiased".
The Times that called for Clinton's resignation and put Judith Miller on the front page?
Yeah, they probably do think they're unbiased.
Has this story gotten boring or what?
joe, uh, he's talking about CBS? Hello?
No offense Todd, but it seems to me that Joe is responding to Gaius Marius, who was indeed talking about The Times.
Or maybe he was asking, "I wonder if the Times thinks (CBS is) unbiased."
Ah, nevermind.
This story was primarily intended as a Kerry campaign lifeline.
It was a planned diversion by CBS in the days/weeks when the swiftvets were doing major damage to Kerry. It was rushed to air to aid Kerry's damage control by focusing media attention elsewhere and give Shrum & co. 4-5 news cycles to figure out how the fuck to respond to John O'Neill.
It was really getting bad for Kerry at this time, recall that approx. 10 days before Rathergate, the Kerry campaign had officially recanted "Xmas in Cambodia." Fox, Drudge and the blogosphere smelled blood and were looking for "the big lie" to pile on the swiftvets and derail the campaign.
How plausible is the hypothesis that Mapes coordinated this whole story with Lockhart to relieve some pressure? Very.
Will anyone ever be able to tell the truth about Dubya's Texas National Guard service... the skimpiness and Vietnam-dodging thereof?
And I still say Dan Rather is as fair as they come. The real ethical dilemmas are balancing "news" and "entertainment." Dan has endured well in that department for a long time.
Speaking of entertainment that used to be news: 60 Minutes is sinking fast because of the chilling effect of this investigation plus Michael Powell's various chill winds.
Yes entertainment, thanks to Evolution Control Committee we have can hear Dan rap Rocked By Rape.
I think this will encourage the news media to finally get out of the king-making business, and simply inform us of events instead of INSTRUCTING us. Yeah, and I'm a Chinese jet pilot.
