I read a book a year or two ago called Jukebox Queen of Malta. It was set during WWII, and one of the characters built jukeboxes out of parts of planes, jeeps, etc. I thought the book overall was fairly bad, but the descriptions of the jukeboxes were interesting. Not film jukeboxes though - just good old-fashioned records.

  2. Ken Shultz   21 years ago

They used to show these Scopitone videos on the Comedy Channel when it first came out back in the '80s; they were all hilarious...

...unless you're a Mod. Then you take them seriously and everyone who knows you thinks they're twice as funny as they would have been otherwise.

Does anyone else out there remember the Higgins Boys and Grouper?

  3. LarryJ   21 years ago

Egad! Scopitone. There's a memory that might have been best left hazy. One of the bars in Laramie had one of these things when I was at U Wyo in the mid 60s. The films were precursors of the music video and cheesy beyond belief.

  4. SR   21 years ago

Ken, I thought it was "Gruber" rather "Grouper", but yes I remember them. They used to host airings of the "Bob & Ray" television broadcasts from the '50s ("-lly Ballou here!").

So is that where Mike Myers and Jay Roach got the idea for Fembots? Hel-LO Nancy!

  7. Ken Shultz   21 years ago

I think there actually were "fembots" in an episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" back when I was a kid. It wasn't as big as the Sasquatch episode, but it was big.

    Now that's the term "fembot".

Myers lifted the fembot charachters from the classic 60's camp film "Dr. Goldfoot and His Bikini Machine"... which, if you haven't seen, is a real treat...for Cramps fans, maybe.

  8. Douglas Fletcher   21 years ago

What the hell brought this back?

  9. PapayaSF   21 years ago

Apparently the first film jukebox was the Panoram, invented in 1939:

This guy's got both a Scopitone and a Panoram for sale:

    Jesse,

I've seen a number of Scopitones, including one for Nancy's "Boots," even. But the one at the sight you linked to -- I don't think it was the same one I'd seen before -- was, um, well, uh, let's just say THANKS!!!
