John Peel, RIP

The legendary BBC radio host and rock-music tastemaster is dead at 65. His late-night show brought me joy in joyless places, proving that it's possible to be on the other side of 50 and still maintain good instincts and enthusiasm for quality new music. (Link via Crooked Timber)

I was acquainted with John Peel, and he was a good man. A man very passionate about his music, obviously, but also quite passionate about life. (Which most passionate music fans tend to be.)

Damned witty when he wanted to be, too.

Don't forget that Peel was a Radio London pirate jock before the offshore stations were shut down, and he was coopted by the statist BBC.
