Damn. I thought Dennis Miller's show would have been cancelled by now. He was funny about 10 years ago, but now his whole act is forcing obscure references into his conversation/dialogue.

I turned on Dennis Millers show by accident the other day. I didn't even know it existed. It is on Channel #355 in Reno.

I thought it was sort of funny, and sort of entertaining. He had some gig where a black actor went interviewning people at a nudist colony. It was amusing.

Also on that channel is Tim Russert's "meet the press". He interviewed Christopher Hitchens and some gay catholic conservative dude. Chris Hitchens is awesome. Reason should carry his articles.

Miller's act is the same as it always was. I'd call myself pretty well-read and intelligent, and he always had a few references that went over my head. The mediocrity charge is a little ridiculous. Mediocre amongst whom? Comics, political talk-show hosts, or comics-turned political talk-show hosts?

Has popular culture always been a wasteland, or is it a wasteland because it's popular? Of course it was much better when culture belonged to the few and rich.

Of course you know good and well that funny is a judgement call. Also, humor isn't really the focus of his current show. At the very least I find him fairly engaging and most of the time a gracious host, even for those he doesn't agree with. The episode with Alterman - if you know of it - was bizarre, and I haven't seen it from him before or since. I've always liked him because he's always been something of a libertarian and an advocate for staying out of people's business.
