The DEA's war on hemp, reported last week by Valerie Vande Panne right here, has sputtered to an end. The Agency has allowed the appeal deadline to pass in HIA vs. DEA. Go out there and get your hemp pretzels, waffles, and beer.

Thank God you folks at Reason talk about the futile war on drugs in a logical sensible way. Unfortunately a lot of folks have the idea that libertarians are all about legalizing pot and placing little or no limits on using or posessing other drugs as well. Not that I am well versed in this topic, but have read enough due to your public to realize that this topic can be discussed in away that we don't have to get totally bent out of shape. Beside the DEA and other law enforcement who are approaching the issue from the point that if we have stiffer jail sentences and arrest more folks the public will think we're winning the war on drugs (they don't even believe it, but as long as they think you believe them all is fine). I feel most of the emotional response comes from people who either formerly had an addiction or lost a family member through drug use or a crime involving drug use. These are the folks that need to be educated. Not that I personally want to smoke reefer, but I feel that this issue is connected with alot of other issues involving the overinvolvement of gov't in our personal lives.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that alot of folks out there think the main focus of Libertarians is the issue of legalizing drugs and nothing else....seeing libertarians as a bunch of hepped up one note Charlies. I personally think the whole drug policy of this country has to be revamped....how much or how little I haven't really thought out (tend to lean toward greatly revamped...starting with the decriminalizing and mandatory jail sentencing of buyers or possessors of drugs) I'd have to think more carefully about the availability of drugs to the general public..like a 10 year old being able to buy a gram of coke at the supermarket.....Yeah sonny, it's right next to the exlax.
