    Clinton sorta-kinda officially admitted to the existence of the Carnivore program, which was a joint project between the NSA and one of the MI branches in Britain.

    Luckily for those orgs, though, they changed the name to Echelon and it is more comprehensive than ever, including capability to monitor cell phone and more modern info traffic, with recording and tracing automatically responding to keywords or phrases (including the words "bomb" and "president" in the same sentence, for instance).

    But since it's a "covert" program, they can't use it in real trials, because of that pesky 4th Amendment. Yet, at least...

    Carnivore (recently renamed DCS-2000) has nothing to do with Eschelon -- at least, not in the way you're thinking. It's basically a bigass packet sniffer at the ISP or backbone level.

    It's a saving grace for us that the government has no marketing sense. Remember when they named that monstrosity that would read everyone's email, "Carnivore"?

    Marketing sense had nothing to do with it. They weren't calling it Carnivore to sell it to you, but to intimidate you. Your tax dollars already bought Carnivore, and you didn't have a choice in the matter.
