I thought the Sofia Coppola joint Lost In Translation had sucked the last bits of life out of the gag about Japanese misappropriations of western popular culture (which even at its best was only partially funny in the first place). But this filmlet almost made me laugh.

    what the f..?

The gold standard for that gag is still the (not at all work safe, not remotely PC) "Tokyo Breakfast" short:

  3. Terry Yakki   21 years ago

That tokyo breakfeast thing went on way too long, you get the joke after the first 12 times the people shout...!!SPOILER!!

    Neeeeguhhhh

  4. mike   21 years ago

I quote lemuel, "what the f..?"

Is that real? If so, wow.

  5. Todd Fletcher   21 years ago

Toky Breakfast is the gold standard, but The Simpsons did a great job at faux jap strangeness with Mr. Sparkle.

  6. Tim Cavanaugh   21 years ago

    It's a joke, Kevrob.

  7. Eric II   21 years ago

Not to mention the episode where they vacation in Tokyo. The game show sequence was great. "Sting those Canucks!"

  8. kevrob   21 years ago

    Got it, Tim.

`Course, my reply was a bit snarky, too.

Gotta love the craic on this board, though.

Does referring to a film or CD track as a "joint" make one somehow hipper-than-thou? I know Spike Lee has been using it forever, but if a white Irish-American guy like me tried to, it would sound affected.

Thats a commercial for a Sega Saturn game based on Mr. Sega Sanjiro. He was the spokesman for Sega for a long time. And of course its been edited.

Thanks for "Tokyo Breakfast," Julian. It's new to me -- and very funny (even if it does drive the joke a little too far).

  12. Douglas Fletcher   21 years ago

Spike Lee is a great filmmaker. If he wants to smoke joints, I don't see how it's anybody's business at all.

  13. Colby Cosh   21 years ago

Don't forget the noodle ad from the Andy Dick Show on MTV. That was pretty good--I think it's online if someone wants to hunt it up.

  14. Big Bob   21 years ago

It's not real. It was made for some film festival around 2001.
