A Plague on Both Their Houses
Reason comes in at #13 on the Chicago Tribune's second annual list of the 50 Best Magazines.
13. Reason. In an era of smash-mouth, left vs. right political discourse, the libertarian Reason is a fresh and nuanced antidote, with a frequent a-plague-on-both-their-houses approach. And it kicked butt with a head-turning cover story, meant to underscore the power of database marketing, in which the cover was personalized for each of the 40,000 subscribers with an aerial photograph of the mailing address.
(We moved up from #21 last year.)

VP forever!
Although, let's see what happens to Reason in the eyes of the Tribune next time a Democrat is in power...
I dunno--I think the Trib (along with the Daily Herald) actually endorsed a Libertarian candidate for the General Assembly two years ago.
crimethink: I imagine they're amused seeing Reason nestled snugly betwixt Time and People.

Why, that would reinforce the evil, anti-capitalist idea of intellectual property! Goodness me, I never!
[/sarcasm]
Seriously, though, why would I subscribe to a magazine that preaches against intellectual property? That would be like buying a copy of the Communist Manifesto. I always figured the best argument against any philosophy is allowing those who preach it to live by it.
Nick in his leather jacket versus Virginia in her magnificently tailored cobalt blue jacket?
No Contest!
VP all the way!
Well, congratulations to Reason, but I gotta say that any list of the "best magazines" that puts Wannabe - oops, I mean, Wired, at the top is pretty questionable. Adding Time to the list is just non-icing on the non-cake. The New Yorker is about the only magazine on the list I really read regularly, and I have to say that while they still have some really good writing, it's gone downhill in recent years. They used to run the occasional political article, but lately just about every single story is given a liberal Democratic political slant, and every single issue opens with a political story. If I wanted Mother Jones, I'd be reading Mother Jones. Even Consumer Reports, which is generally pretty good, has lately started to beat the drum for regulating every single facet of life.
Congratulations on being named but [insert snide comment undermining the honour here].

Anybody know of a generic trib login/password I can use?
#13? Bah!
Reason is the best magazine - and best website - around. I've subscribed for nearly ten years and find it indispensable.
The only thing you guys could do to improve would be to throw in the occasional scantily clad girl, a la FHM. What about a "Girls of Libertarianism" issue?
I thought that was already done...

🙂
As Reason winning awards is no longer unusual, these posts are starting to look like simple horn tooting.
Nonetheless, congrats.
Congrats! Reason really is an oasis from the "smash-mouth..." discourse, although I admit that I occasionally fall into that type of ranting.

Heh. They said "nuanced".
Kudos Reason! And we've got your smash-mouth right here at H&R. But we call it smash-brain.
I've been reading Reason for so long now and getting caught up in all the bickering here that I almost forgot that its "nuanced" anti-partisan stance was a major factor in attracting me here in the first place! But within any faction, there'll always be sub-factions....
Heh, where are the Postrelophiles now?
Nice Reason!
Czar,
Even without IP, some people would find the print version of a magazine more convenient, just to get the articles earlier and have a copy they could carry around and mark up.
